[RBW] Re: Reflective Tape on Gripsters

2012-11-10 Thread grant
That looks fine, and a test-at-night with a driving friend will tell the
tale. Also good to put a strip of the tape on lengthwise on the crank arm
(Sheldon believed "crank" covered it, no need for "arm," but he also lined
his lugs using white-out). We have, and you can get elsewhere, silver tape.
3M --or maybe it's Reflexite--also make BLACK reflective tape---for black
crankarms, but you won't find is stocking that anytime soon. I remember
reading that the manufacturer whoever that might be says is isn't as good
as the other colors. A duh moment, but still good to know it exists. If
you're stuck somewhere and all you can get is black, I'd go for it in a
millisecond.

In 1987 Bstone was the FIRST maker to offer Look pedals as original
equiment on a bike, and they didn't come with the required CPSC-approved
reflectors. The workaround was including some super-cheap compliant pedals
-- reflective and not rubbery--as the official pedal of the bike, and then
lo and behold the Looks were included in the box. But also as I recall, the
Japanese Bstoners figured a way to put the reflectors on looks, and on the
Grand Velo model bikes sold in Japan, that was the way they came.

Re: [RBW] Re: Wanted, cheap

2012-11-10 Thread PATRICK MOORE
That's what I want. Thanks. Interesting to see that 110 is surviving in
cyclocross. Will try the 38/24 out for a while first before sending, but
that's the one I want.

A listmember has generously offered 5 9-sp spacers; still nead 11 more
One defect (every gearing arrangement is a compromise) of what is basically
a 1X8 is that, in order to get the cruising cogs in the middle of the
cassette, I have to space them out from the end with more small cogs than I
really need for real world riding -- eg, to get the 15 and 16 in the #4 and
#5 places, I must use a 12, 13 and 14 in the first places, and I don't
really need the 12. Since I like close gaps between say 60" and 75" -- 80",
this means that everything smaller than the 65" has to be distributed over
just three cogs, this with the 8 speed cassette. One more would break this
25" gap down very nicely, instead of 18-21-26, say 18-20-24-30. (Wake up,
screed* is finished.)

64cm Atlantis f/f, earlier version, recently repaired and repainted.

I had 2 potential buyers drop out, so one last time for the list before
exploring other channels.Price dropped to $1,000. Research from last
potential sale indicated that it would cost abotu $75 to pack and ship
within CONUS.

[RBW] Re: Fenders and Rams

2012-11-10 Thread Rocky B
I think it depends which Ram you have.

The early Rams (the orange and blue ones) were designed to fit 700x28s with
fenders and 700x38s without fenders...while i've heard owners of the later
Rams (the green ones), were able to fit 700x33s with fenders.

Re: [RBW] Fenders and Rams

2012-11-10 Thread J L
Ryan

Some have installed longboards, or SKS fenders on their Ram but there are
also many who were successful in installing metal fenders.

There are a couple things one can do to improve the clearance for fenders.
What brakes do you have? The stock Shimano brakes are nice at stopping but
the Tektro 539s are a good upgrade because of how they are shaped. There
more clearance in both caliper width (wider tire can be installed without
deflating) and fender clearance. The second thing to try - if I understand
correctly what you meant by "mount the good way" is to shorten the daruma
bolt (a file used like a saw works well) then drill the mounting hole a
little wider in order to use a recessed brake bolt in place of the nut.

I worked with this same issue on my own Ram. I am very pleased with the
Tektro brakes and although I got fenders to fit on the bike I never ride
with them.

Cheers
JL

2012-11-10 Thread Dave
FYI, Walnut Creek is SO not "southern California", but that's a picky
point between us locals...

Re: [RBW] Re: RBW garage sale

2012-11-10 Thread Peter Morgano
Point taken, I have never been to CA but know about local geography
sticking points living in NYC and all. Take the ever expanding area called
"Park Slope" in brooklyn, it started out as about 15 blocks but once it
became trendy the real estate agents and newcomers claim that it now
encompasses almost 35 blocks, craziness.
