Re: [RBW] Re: More breathless excitement over the new Sackville

2012-10-27 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Well, perhaps not quite Nirvana, but at least a spot on the
penultimate antechamber to the gate of the Earthly Paradise. It is
indeed very nice, nicer than I expected.

It has what for my uses (and I emphasize that qualification) are still
pecadillos that would still have to be sifted through the uppermost
levels of the purgatorial mountain: I would make the outside pockets
pouch pockets instead of slit pockets to reduce incursion into the
main compartment; the length of adjustment of the otherwise very
convenient snap buckles is finicky -- I think I'd prefer a standard
buckle and strap of some sort; I'd change the removable pocket on the
flap to an attached pouch (I remember years ago opining on a list that
the Nelson Longflap then first offered by Rivendell would benefit from
the addition of a small-item pocket on the flap); I'd add rings to the
top of the flap to match those at the bottom (meant for a support
strap) so that you could lash bulky things to the flap.

I fully realize that, for others' standards and preferences, the
design may already be fully sanctified and happily harp playing in
Elysium.

Now that we've exhausted *that* metaphor, I will add that there is
still much work to be done to improve saddlebag supports. Perhaps the
ideal would be to combine braze-ons with bag design so that you could
have a minimalist rack -- something like the Mark's but perhaps even
more minimal -- whose sole purpose would be to support the bottom
against two points on the seatstays. I agree that the new Bagman seems
to combine much of the worst of both rack and saddlebag worlds. But a
near second best might be to adapt the Nitto Grip for use with saddles
other than the Brooks (and to reduce the price: my own crude first
attempt indicates that such a device could be made rather cheaply. I
spent a total of less than $12 and that was at hardware store retail
prices (I include $5 for a Nashbar front allen key release).

For saddlebag and bike combinations that require under-bag support, I
don't see that it would be hard to devise a rail-mounted grip that
incorporated an original-Bagman-like bottom support. The original
Bagman device had, IMO, an unecessarily complex and insufficiently
sturdy rail clamp.

I should think that you'd have ample gap between saddle and tire to
easily accomodate a Pendle without support?

[RBW] Re: FS: various wheels

2012-10-27 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Updated with the wheels I've sold. Feel free to make offers. Last time I'll
bump this. Thanks! Jim

I have lots of wheels that I'm not using anymore. All are handbuilt by me.
Please contact offlist if interested.

White Industries Eccentric ENO fix/free 135 mm 36h on Dyad rim, Wheelsmith
14g spokes, all silver. Used but good condition. $195 shipped. Includes
White Industries 15t fixed cog and lockring. I have other White Industries
fixed cogs for it, too, which I will sell separately. These cogs are
beautifully made and a proprietary design, which is, IMO, the most smartly
designed fixed-cog attachment system available.

SOLD: Schmidt SON28 ("classic" style) 36h on Dyad. All silver. The rim is
somewhat worn on the brake surface, but is perfectly true and has a fair
bit of life left in it. $195 shipped. Matching front to the ENO wheel above.

Shimano XT M775 32h Sun-Ringle 29" EQ23 disc-only rim. Rim and hub are
black, spokes are silver Wheelsmith double-butted. Includes 160 mm disc
rotor and Stan's rim tape. Lightly used. This is one of the lighter-weight
metal 29" rear wheels you'll find. $170 shipped

Shimano Alfine front dynamo 32h Sun-Ringle 29" EQ23 disc-only rim. Rim and
hub are black, spokes are silver Wheelsmith double-butted. Includes 160 mm
disc rotor and Stan's rim tape. Lightly used. $170 shipped. Matches the XT
wheel above. Discount of $30 if you buy the set.

Shimano Alfine front dynamo 32h on 26" Alex Adventurer. Hub is black. Rim
is black with machined sidewall. Silver Wheelsmith 14g spokes. Used, but
barely. $160 shipped.

Shimano Deore front hub 36h radially laced to Velocity Aerohead 700C 28h.
Unorthodox 36h/28h hub/rim pairing, but works fine. All silver. Like new. A
very lightweight front wheel. $100 shipped.

SOLD: Shimano XT M775 36h laced to Sun Ringle EQ31 26" disc-only rim. This
is a heavy-duty rear wheel suitable for loaded touring or other abusive
practices. Includes SRAM 990 11-32 cassette and disc rotor. Used, but good
condition. $185 shipped.

[RBW] Retrofitting a 2002 Road Custom - Tektro brakes and fat tires

2012-10-27 Thread reynoldslugs
I should have listened to Grant - when I ordered my Road Standard in 2002
(2003?), I figured I would always use Campagnolo sidepulls with "wide" 25mm
tires. Grant tried to get me to realize the folly of that notion, but I
eventually got what I asked for. The bike was built originally built
with Campi brakes and 25mm tires.

Now - ten years later - I of course prefer fatter tires, but my foolish
notion that my brakes "just had to be Campagnolo" left inadequate clearance
for anything bigger than a 28mm tire... so today, we pulled off the
Campagnolo s/p's and replaced them with Tektro 538's, and squeezed in a
pair of Schwalbe Kojaks. GP did a great job specing the bike, 'cuz the
Tektros fit fine, and the Kojaks (which measure out at 32 mm) just barely
fit - - albeit with only about 3mm clearance at the front caliper.

The bike was always nice, now it's just dreamy - nothing like fat tires to
make a sweet bike even better.

So thanks, Grant, I'm glad one of us had enough common sense to design a
smart frame.

Pics of the new brakes, with the Kojaks, here:

Re: [RBW] Retrofitting a 2002 Road Custom - Tektro brakes and fat tires

2012-10-27 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Aren't the Kojaks nice?

That is cutting it a bit close in front. I know tires expand in width
when inflated for a while; perhaps they'll not do so in height.

I just rode Kojaks today, but mine have what, 4" of clearance on the
Fargo. With the 32 actual/34 nominal on the 559 Riv, I can probably
get a fender under the front caliper (Superbe? RGC? Forget); no brake
in rear.

[RBW] Does bar bag weight effect handling?

2012-10-27 Thread lungimsam

I have a small siddle bag I put on my race bike for more storage in a
pinch. Looked great, worked great. I'm leavin' it on there!

Was thinking of getting a big barbag for the Bleriot sometime, after I get
it back from the shop (hopefully within a week, but don't know how the
coming hurricane will play into this).

Does the weight ever effect handling? Or is it fine no matter what the load
in a bar bag (within reason).

[RBW] FS: 650B tires & Tubus Tara

2012-10-27 Thread Nathan W
Hiya folks,

Two sets of tires on the lookout for new homes:

1 pair of Fatty Rumpkins, 650B x 41 folding, in very good condition
(including sidewalls). 50 miles on the wife's 48cm Sam Hillborne. $55
shipped CONUS.
1 pair of Schwalbe wire 'Middy', 650Bx35, in nearly new condition. Pulled
off wife's Betty Foy after 25 miles. $30 shipped CONUS.

No cuts or scrapes of any kind. Anyone interested in putting them to use?

Also have 1x Tubus Tara low-rider front rack, in black. Used for a season
before having a custom rack built. $75 shipped CONUS.

Cheers,

Nathan Wong
New York City

Re: [RBW] Re: A Simple Card

2012-10-27 Thread Robert Barr
The deluge of cards looks wonderful. I just posted a thank you on the
Rivendell Facebook site to let the Riv community know that the cards are
much appreciated. To make certain that the note is received by all, I want
to send a note to the Group as well. Nick is enjoying all the cards and
notes, but thankfully he can thank you himself. I want to thank you for all
the smiles your cards have brought to the rest of the nursing home. From
the perspective of the son of a nursing home resident, working in a nursing
home is demanding. You are asked to help people that others can't or aren't
able to help, and your patients often can't thank you. The cards streaming
in to Nick are being enjoyed by the staff and other patients as well. They
are evidence that people do care. For that I want to thank you. Bob

[RBW] Re: Does bar bag weight effect handling?

2012-10-27 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
I think this topic has been covered a few times, so a quick run through the
archives would be helpful.

To give the nickel tour:

- Yes, weight will affect handling. Whether this matters depends a great
deal on the rider.
- As one would think, more weight will affect handling more.
- Many people (myself included) adapt quickly to changes in front-loaded
setups and it is not a concern within a short bit of distance.
- Other folks notice the weight and feel it degrades performance.
- 5 pounds is a lot in a bar bag. More than that and you might want to
think about panniers.

Hope that gets you started!

- Jim
