Beautiful Kelly! I especially like July 17-18, what a couple of days
riding those must have been. Then to continue with some days of off-
road riding - wow. Did someone really tote a floor pump?

A Walt wire basket and bear-proof food canister combo equals epic fun.

[RBW] Who wants to trade for a (Newish) Bombadil?

2012-08-03 Thread Peter M
So my plans to move upstate have fizzled and I am stuck in brooklyn
for yet another year with a too small apartment and too many bikes. I
have a new (2011) Beautiful single top tube Waterford built 52cm
Bombadil that doesnt get ridden enough for my wife to stop houding me
about it. So was wondering if anyone had an older 52cm (Taiwan?) Sam
or appropriate sized Bleriot or another 650b Rivendell frame for
someone with an 85pbh they wanted to trade plus cash to quiet down my
wife's rumblings for a while. Looking for something with no dents but
paint issure are irrelevant, or maybe preferred so I can bring myself
to lock it up outside of places. I know this is a longshot but thought
that maybe someone who was looking for an upgrade without spending the
extra on a whole new bike might be out there. Here is a link to some
pics in the old backyard. Thanks everyone.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Serial number decoding...what's it mean?

2012-08-03 Thread Leslie
"It depends..."

Different Rivendell frames have been made by different companies. For
example, the Rambouillet frames were made by Toyo, the Roadeo frames have
all been made by Waterford. Some, like the AHH, were made by Toyo, are are
now made by Waterford. Some, like the Hilborne, are made in Taiwan. The
customs have been made by various builders over the years (Joe Starck, Curt
Goodrich, Mark Nobilette, etc.

Some are just sequential numbering, but some, like the Waterford-built
frames, have a coding implemented in the numbering.

Any particular model you're asking in regards to?

[RBW] Re: Denali Tour Photos

2012-08-03 Thread Kelly
First I was camping in an real tent. Mark on another Bombadil single top
tube was under the tarp. I could never do that though it made a great
picture.
Camping was fine, I grabbed beds a few days when camping was on gravel rv
sites.. hate those things. Not to mention I brought low quality tent
steaks.

I pretty much used what I took. About the only change I would make would
be better tent steaks. My clothing two MUSA long pants and two MUSA
Knickers worked well.

We had an all day soak on the first day and I admit I was pleasantly
surprised at who well the splats worked.

I accidentally left my extra tire at home and that was the one thing I
needed. This also had a sidewall tear from the head of the nail that I
missed. The park tool boots worked well and this tire made another two
days before I bought an extra from another rider.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tksleeper/7647193132/

So actually packing came out about right for me.

[RBW] Re: splits in nifty swiftys. safe or not?

2012-08-03 Thread William
I'd answer no it's not normal. And, no mine don't do that. If I had just
bought them from Rivendell, I'd return them. If I had just acquired them
from somebody who claimed they were new, I'd try to give them back. If
that was not possible or convenient, I'd probably ride them. If I was
really scared of a blowout, I'd use in the rear only.

I've no more use for these.

$90 shipped CONUS, via Paypal.

I didn't buy the tires from them, but have emailed pics to retailer. My

I tried to contact Panaracer through their site, but couldn't find a

For some reason, the photobouquet pic codes aren't working.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Serial number decoding...what's it mean?

2012-08-03 Thread Leslie
Waterford numbering info can be found here:
http://waterfordbikes.com/w/support/serial-numbers
It addresses pre-1995 in the top portion of that page; at the bottom, the
key portion for post-94 bikes ( and should be applicable to Rivs built by
Waterford) is this part:

   - *Month Code: *This one letter code corresponds to the month with
A=January, B=February and so on. Because I is not used, September=J and
   December=M.
   - *Year Code:* This two digit code is the last two digits of the year –
   96 is 1996.
   - *Sequence Number:* This three digit number represents the nth frame
and/or fork scheduled during the month.

Though a gap may appear between the letter and the rest of the serial
number (a result of Waterford’s serial numbering machine, the serial number
is recorded in our records without spaces. A number that shows up as “D
08123″ is recorded as “D08123″.

Now, for a non-Waterford bike to use as an example, the Rambouillet, built
by Toyo for Riv, used an RB prefix followed by consecutive numbering (at
least through 1200... ) More can be found here:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/rambouillet/

[RBW] Apologies if you don't like them....

2012-08-03 Thread William
One day a few months back I went into RBW HQ. I can't remember exactly
what I was getting. I think it was just a couple small things. Grant was
over on his computer. A conversation started:

Grant: "Bill, if we were getting more wool underwear"
Me(interupting): "You mean like Devold?"
Grant: "Who said anything about Devold? If I meant Devold I'd say Devold"
Me: "Sorry. I'll try to stay focused"
Grant: "Good. OK, back to wool underwear, kind of boxerish. If we only
want to sell them in one color, should they be black, grey, or mossy?"
Me: "Um, I think mossy"
Grant: "Check! One less thing to worry about, now YOU have to worry about
it"

So, if you hate the mossy color on the Riv wool boxers, it is all my fault,
apparently.

[RBW] FS - Garage Finds - Blackburn, Eclipse Front Pannier Mounts, Specialized Pump

2012-08-03 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Haven't really dug into the actual pile of parts and bits, but these things
fell out of the rafters during a recent garage cleaning.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/sets/72157630888662560

The salient bits for this list are the two sets of front panniers - I
bought these after (I kid you not) reading an article in the Fat Tire Flyer
about how much fun it would be to go touring on a Mountain Bike. We never
used or mounted these - finding that the rear racks and pannier set up
carried enough gear for our needs. So, they are:

Blackburn Custom Lowrider pannier racks for use on a CL-1 braze-on fork
mount. As near as I recall, that was for a through fork mount setup, which
you can see if you look at the detail image. These were from the first
days of Blackburn - aluminum US made. Well crafted. Mounts through the
lower CL-1 braze on and the dropout tab.

Eclipse (not blackburn - i had just attached the image to the outside at
some point so I'd remember what they were) Front lowrider mount. These
were for a bike with no braze on, though they should work with a mid-fork
threaded attachment. There should be some p-clamps in there too. There's
a schematic in the image as well.

For these two - if someone wants 'em both - I can fit them into a Medium
USPS Priority box for $11 shipping, and then I'd want to get $30 for the
pair. If someone wants one or the other, I'd like $20 for one, and it
will probably cost $8 to ship (light but kinda odd-shaped).

The Specialized Floor Pump I bought a year ago to have at work, so that I
wouldn't have to use a mini/frame pump if I had found a flat before I left
for home. Used it once. It's nice, but one pump too many. I'd prefer not
to ship this and could connect with someone in the immediate SF Bay Area
for $20.

email me if you want these or if you have questions. That's cyclofiend
over at gmail dot com.

The other stuff is not list-centric, but is for sale. (Getting images
together for online venue posting). They are just what they seem to be, so
again, direct (NON-list) questions there too.

[RBW] FS: Schwinn Paramount

2012-08-03 Thread Daniel
Hey Rivs,
I'm selling my '85 Schwinn Paramount (Columbus tubing, made by Waterford).
It's most Riv-ish qualities are its lugged Nitto stem and the fact that
it's lugged and made by Waterford. It definitely falls in the gofast/skinny
tire camp, though.
I'm asking $1300 shipped for it complete as laid out below and I'm open to
offers on the frame and fork.
Please contact me offlist...

[RBW] BLUG for 8/1: Bosco bars!

2012-08-03 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Funny post. Bosco bars that I can relate to! And a 1,700 word
letter-in-criticism of Just Ride. Some people just have too much free
time. Back when I worked for a business ethics organization in WDC,
we'd collect the occasional screed, often hand written in a cramped
hand in an odd color of ink. 1/4" margins, 12 pages, two-sided, small
letters. I forget how we filed these; "Aberrants"? "Aberrationists"?
It was at the front of the "A"s. Sometimes I feel like that myself.
BSNYC could mile a letter like that for a month's worth of posts, at
least.

night with my daughter, very conveniently not realizing.

[RBW] do tires soften?

2012-08-03 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
I recently started using the Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tires which RBW sells on my
Hillbornes (brown on green, creme (non-RBW) on orange).

While I initially noticed a reduced cushy-ness compared to the $15 Kenda 40-622
tires I'd used before, I on the whole preferred the 37-622 Schwalbes because
they felt rounder, more controllable, and cushy enough.

Now, though, after a few hundred miles on each set, I feel that they are *more*
cushy than the Kendas were. Yet they retain the roundness and controlled-ness
(not "squirmy"). Now I like 'em even more. A lot, in fact. I'd go so far as to
say they are a "good value", even though they cost almost twice what the Kendas
did.

I generally maintain the pressure in my tires at 60-70 PSI. The increased cush
in the Schwalbes seems apparent even at 70 PSI.

Could they really be softer (more deformable) in a detectable way in hundreds
of miles? Yet somehow remain more reliable/predictable in leans? Am I simply
high on cycling? I feel I'm approaching the "laterally stiff yet vertically
compliant" territory of marketing-speak. Whatever... I really like these tires.

No flats or any other adverse tire experiences on 'em either. But that means
little; I almost never have those anyway. Presumably that's mostly a factor of
terrain. The Illinois Prairie Path and the Great Western Trail sucketh not.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean
who is mystified and happy

[RBW] Re: Who wants to trade for a (Newish) Bombadil?

2012-08-03 Thread ted
Cool. I concur about the second tts. There is only just enough room
for the second tube on the 52s and it's hard to see how it could be
strictly necessary. When I get asked about it I just shrugg and say I
think its sort of gratuitous and an excuse for more lug work. But on
the Bombadill I think it does fit in with the overall theme. The model
is sort of over the top all over. Along with the second top tube there
is the extension of the lower head tube lug on the bottom of the down
tube, and I think the drop outs are half again or twice as thick as
the ones on a Hillsen.

Re: [RBW] Re: Who wants to trade for a (Newish) Bombadil?

2012-08-03 Thread Peter Morgano
Agreed, having owned both the dropouts on the Bombadil are at least twice
as thick as the ones on my old Hilsen. I do love the extended lug on the
seat tube, so nice. It rides really nice but I think it would be happier
on some mixed trails than the streets of NYC. Then again if I dont get any
tempting offers it will just have to be confined to pavement for the time
being.

Yeup. I mostly ride mine in the area parks / open spaces. Works fine
