[RBW] Re: Indian bike names

2012-01-07 Thread newenglandbike
I went to college in a town called Amherst- as awful a name, due to its
history, as any word or name that has been appropriated from Native
American language. But it's just a name, and better that it be used and
not forgotten by the general public than otherwise.

[RBW] Re: cable hangers - keyed or unkeyed?

2012-01-07 Thread Marty
I've used all types, and aside from the extra effort to keep the hanger
straight on a steerer without a flat or slot, a non-keyed hanger/steerer
seems to work just fine. Typically you end up getting a feel for how
off-set to have the hanger positioned as you tighten down the the lock-nut
on the headset so it rotates into alignment just as the right amount of
torque is applied. You can also give it a nudge or two in either direction
once everything is set with a soft mallet, but I've found that a little
trial and error is sufficient in lining things up. In my experience, once
it's tight, a non-keyed hanger seems to stay put. BTW - I've also had keyed
hangers do some damage to threaded steerers if they do get loose and rotate
out of their assigned location. I've probably filed off more keys on
hangers that had them than I have used the keys.

[RBW] Re: Indian bike names

2012-01-07 Thread Bill Carter
Thanks for pointing that out, I'd missed it. I doubt he'd use the
name "Hiawatha" itself out of consideration for Jim Thill, but it
sounds like he may be playing with the idea of using one out of the
Longfellow work. It would certainly go along with the use of
"Rivendell" and various product names drawn from Tolkien's books. In
fact, I named one of my children using a Tolkien place name, and that
was several years before the founding of RBW, so I was not influenced
by Grant in doing so. But then everyone knows what they say about
great minds.

Well as hard as it was to believe St Louis had temperatures in the 70's today.
So a later afternoon 30 miler was in order. The early part of the ride was
24ish miles tail wind out and head wind home on gravel and single track along
the river. Had a thermos of coffee and sunshine. What a way to end the week.
Not to mention it's always good to spend some Bomba time.

[RBW] Signal to Noise Riv Ride... PDX

I love Jim M's post on the BSNYC thread about signal to noise on the list

[RBW] AHH vs Atlantis

Hey Group, I have a question for dual AHH and Atlantis owners. Do
you ride a slightly bigger AHH than an Atlantis or the same size? I
have both( in 61cm), and the AHH just seems smaller.I looked at
the geometry chart and all the #s seem to be pretty indentical. Now
on the Atlantis I ride 50mm tires and on the Hilsen I currently have
42mm tires( I like to run big cushy tires), So obviuosly the AHH is
going to sit a little lower, it just seems smaller though. Oh and i
have a PBH of just over 89.thanks in advance for any help -Mike

Re: [RBW] AHH vs Atlantis

2012-01-07 Thread James Warren

I use a 64 Atlantis and 65 Homer. The two bikes fit very similarly because the
Homer's top tube slopes up 1.5 degrees while the Atlantis's slopes up 2.5
degrees. That one degree of angle difference creates a stem height difference
of almost exactly 1 cm. So the handlebar/seatlug relationship of the two bikes
are almost identical. (Atlantis shows 1 cm more of seatpost.)

The toptubes are 62.5 cm on Homer and 62 cm on Atlantis.

My comparison might be unique because it uses a 2001 Atlantis (tenth birthday
repaint last year!) and on the Atlantis back then, the 64 cm frame came with a
62 cm toptube. The more recent 64's came with 60 cm toptubes. If I were
comparing a 2006 64 cm Atlantis to a 65 cm Homer, I'm not sure if things would
compare differently.

Does your 61 cm Atlantis have the dimensions of today's Rivendell geometry
charts?

[RBW] Re: Indian bike names

2012-01-07 Thread William
Leaving aside the political considerations and treating names of bikes as
just names of bikes, for some reason I find super long bicycle names
endearing. Kona named a cruiser after the tiny fish
"humuhumunukunukuapua'a". The Native American placename to fill that spot
is clear:

"Touch not a g!" No impious hand
Shall wrest one from that noble name
Fifteen in all their glory stand
And ever shall the same.
For never shall that number down,
Tho Gogg and Magogg shout and
thunder;
Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg's renown
Shall blaze, the beacon of the town,
While nations gaze and wonder."

Re: [RBW] Re: Indian bike names

2012-01-07 Thread hobie
Don't some native american tribes now own gambling casinos? They sure sell
alot of cigarettes. "If you can't lickem you might as well join em". I'd
stick to animal names. Saluki was a great name. Check out the great Youtube
videos of these dogs running. We all know how well GPs bikes ride. A word
that describes the ride on one of his bikes works for me. Animals are not
opinionated or judgemental. The "Washington Redskins" has never sat well
with native americans,or the malt liquor named after a Native American.

[RBW] Ride it Round?

2012-01-07 Thread Peter Pesce
I have a tire issue that I hope someone can help with. A year ago I hung a pair
of 1 yr old Pasela TG 35's on a hook in the garage. I recently went to
re-install them on my Sam and one of them will not seat evenly all the way
around the rim (Velocity Dyad) no matter what I do. I put several hundred miles
on these before mothballing them and they were fine.
Any idea what might have happened, or how to fix it? Can I just hope to "ride
it round" again over time.
Thanks in advance.

[RBW] Slingshots!

2012-01-07 Thread Eric Daume
In one of the last couple of Readers Grant had an article on making sling
shots. Mere months later, that has inspired me to get out and make my own.
I had saved a few promising Y-branches when I was cutting out some blown
down trees from a nearby trail earlier this summer. Surgical tubing from
the hardware store, some leather from work (I work in automotive seating,
so this is easy to come by), a warmish afternoon in January, and I was on
my way.

I don't have Grant's boylike glee at using a pocket knife to cut wood, and
I couldn't find mine anyway. I started using a utility knife, but that was
slow and daylight was waning, so out came the die grinder. I'm also lousy
at knots, so in the spirit of Rivendell I went with zip ties. I'm not sure
zip ties are the hot ticket for a long life of high powered rock throwing,
but it worked well enough for this trial.

I cut the tubing kind of short, so my little boy could use it. Still, I was
able to solidly thunk a fence post on the opposite side of our backyard. My
five year old (with me holding the Y and him pulling) was able to send a
rock in a gentle arc about 30 feet or so. Not bad! He only hit my thumb the
first time.

Good fun on a winter Saturday afternoon. A picture is here:

to top my masterpiece here, but don't let that stop you.

Re: [RBW] Slingshots!

2012-01-07 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I made slingshots for my daughter and two friends last summer after my
brother trimmed my mother's several, large mulberries. Memories of boyhood,
when (age nine to about 12) I was Deadeye Dick with the weapon, hunting
lizards in, around and on our houses in, seriatim, Bangalore and Delhi. (I
could hit 6" lizards 8/10 up to 30' away, usually high on walls.)

I started with the cheap, split bamboo models sold by the peripatetic toy
wallahs for a few cents, then graduated to my own manufactures. Innertube
strips in those days produced some force.

But bicycle innertube rubber must be different now, since today's used
tubes produce very poor power. Just as well, given my daughter's and
friends' gross inability to aim the things with any precision.

Don't get me started about my blowguns or firecracker matchlocks ...

Ask any living relatives--I wanted to BE an Indian when I was a kid.
Read all about them, was one for Halloween a lot. Know they got super
shafted. Don't feel personally responsible for that, but am no less
ashamed on behalf of us anybodys for it for being out of the loop.
Still like Rosco Bubbe, Bosco Rubbebut last night at about 11:10
as I was about to turn off, ZING came a good name over the ethernet,
and I can't say what it is, but the guy who suggested it has been
thanked and privately acknowledged, and usually I don't run names by
too many Rivemps, but this one I did--kinda because I couldn't contain
myself and wanted to share it---and so far, Keven and Elizabeth are
gung ho 'bout it.

The frame/bike itself is the real critical thing, and I've got three
things up in the air about that, but I think we have a good name. It
isIndianesque. Not recognizable as Indian at all, unless you
already know. I didn't, and I'd have gobbled it up even if were far
from Indiany. Long and interesting. Easy to pronounce, hard to
mispronounce. Fitting for a bicycle (that's never mattered before,
although Saluki was, too). I'm not trying to fan the flames, not
playing tricks of any sort. Just reporting that there's a name out
there that I betevery one of you (yes, pal Liesl, justifiably
famed Riv Chica Warrior (uh-oh!) included) will like. Seriously, a
real goody.

[RBW] Re: Ride it Round?

2012-01-07 Thread reynoldslugs
Coincidental to see this post. Just got back from a ride, and had the
same problem today, with Jack Browns on OCR Velocity rear rim.
Flatted in the midst of gale force winds (riding up Old Donner Pass Rd
in the Sierra). Threw a new tube in the JAck Brown, and the thing has
a serious assymetrical low spot opposite the valve stem. Stopped the
ride, deflated the tire, reinflated, same problem. Rode back over the
pass, about 15 miles, and the thing is still completely unbalanced.

have never had this problem previously. Hmmm. The wheel/rim/tire
appears to ride ok - - aside from the asymmetrical flat spot but I'm
worried about a sudden pinch flat, or the tire rolling off the rim
during a steep descent.

Max
Sonoma County (from Tahoe - no snow, but great riding weather if you
don't mind the cold)

Oooo. now you're starting to venture towards my childhood:

[RBW] Re: Ride it Round?

2012-01-07 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Oh how we all hate that...
I wish I knew a quick remedy... but the best way to attack this seems
to start with soapy water and lots of air...

When this has failed to fix the problem I have resorted to leaving the
soapiness on the tire, overinflating the tire and riding it around.
This has often worked for me... give it a try.

Peace,
BB

Wrist-Rocket, baby!!! THOSE were precision slingshots, and which
technically they were illegal in NJ (back in the 70s, don't know about
now), we had a way of...
"aquiring" them... They were awesome.

Re: [RBW] School-bus yellow, mustard

2012-01-07 Thread Joe Bernard
Thanks for all the replies/pics folks. I've decide to shelve the project
for a while after having a bit of an epiphany today. I got to thinking
about the beautiful yellow Saluki I remembered with the red
toe-straps...and those straps got my attention. It wasn't just the yellow I
liked, but the contrasting red bits (I think the bars were wrapped red,
also). So I grabbed a clear bottle with blue graphics and top, and put it
on my light green AHH. "Wow..that really sets it off!" I'm gonna put some
blue cloth tape on the bars and leave it at that for a while. I haven't
owned the bike very long, nor put much beausage into yet, so it seems kinda
silly to jump on a repaint right now.

Heyyy..ya know what would be cool? Dark root beer brown like an old Schwinn
Suburban! Yeah, thinking about new colors'll make ya crazy..

[RBW] Re: Anyone Regret Selling a Bike?

2012-01-07 Thread Joe Bernard
I have an opposite answer. I regret BUYING a recumbent trike brand new. Silly
me, I should've picked up a used one to see if I would dig it. I was just SURE
a trike would be the real humdinger. I sold it a year later in still brand new
condition at not a brand new price to a very nice and grateful guy. Turned
around and bought my AHH. Never looked back..no regrets.

I've done this with some old campy wheels after buying from a garage
sale in San Francisco. Rich from Rivendell does this with his orders
on his big dummy. I'm pretty sure theres a picture of that floating
around the internet somewhere.
