[RBW] 2x7 AHH, no front derailer
This sounds like a good experiment. I'm virtually always on my middle chainring anyway. I think soon I'll just remove my derailer (it's a braze-on style that's bolted to a clamp) and see what happens. I've never noticed the chain hitting the front detailer's cage during rear shifts. But it might be happening sometimes. I too have an IRD FW/Phil-hub combination in back (LX RR derailer), Sugino XD2 24-36-46 up front (IRD alpina-d derailer). I'm using a 7-spd 13-28 freewheel, not the 13-32, though. So my experience may differ from yours. Of course, where and how one rides I'm sure has a big effect. I'll post any results. [RBW] 2x7 AHH, no front derailer
I've done fder-free doubles many times. One chainring that I use always, and one bailout ring. Never had issues with dropping the chain, but I suppose if you were doing cyclocross or other rough riding, it may be an issue. Usually I run a triple with the outer ring replaced by a Salsa Crossing Guard. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] 2x7 AHH, no front derailer
I wonder if your chances of a stable chain depend partly on the ring/cog combination -- ie, if you spend most of your time with a straight chain, perhaps the chain will jump less? My front derailleur-less setups have always had the chain on the cruising gears more or less centered and I've not dumped the chain except once when the shift lever slipped very suddenly. [RBW] Re: New to list, introduction
Hi Andrew, Your bike is exactly what I wanted but didn't think I could afford (or wait for...) in 1999! That was just before the Atlantis was announced, and at that time there were only the Joe and Curt builts. I first built up my Longlow-ish bike as a 6-speed, halfstep + granny, moustache-barred bike. I even had a similar bar tape wrap, except mine formed small diamonds along the top ridge. It would be interesting to meet up sometime to compare two bikes that were built to the same intentions - Rivendell and Mercian. Workmanship, clearances, style, and tubing stiffnesses (mine is 531C, standard diameters, I believe yours has OS diameters) would all be subtly different, I'd think. [RBW] Re: So Torn, Cannot Decide
+1 on John's assertion that the if there's ever pressure from Riv, it's more likely to tell you what you don't need. I like having a bunch of bikes with slightly different 'personalities', and don't mind at all having bikes that overlap a lot in what they are good at. When I was thinking about getting a Hunqapillar, kind of on a whim, Keven said "Dude, you don't need a Hunqapillar. Look at the bikes you have, you don't need it." Holding off on a Hunqa enabled me to get my Hilsen as a dedicated Rando bike, which might be my favorite bike in my life. I just sold my Hillborne frameset, because I really want an Atlantis. I went in to Riv HQ to ride the Atlantis, and Vince told me "Dude, you don't need an Atlantis. You have a Bombadil for touring and trails, and a Hilsen for road rides. You could S24O on either one." I probably will still get an Atlantis, but it'll be because I choose to do it, in spite of Riv's correct assertion that I don't really need it. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Here's an updated map, showing the planned route from Metrolink station: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/San-Clemente-mixed-surface Whole lotta' climbing, but it won't be hot, and we're never more than 1/4 mile from any sort of a bail-out option. The beauty of this ride being based in crazy-busy Orange County. It's a jewel of a route most people don't know about! [RBW] Re: BikeTinker diverts me potential business
That looks looks a really good stab at an issue I am contantly at odds with too. The GK pedals lasted me all of one 30 min ride before moving to my wife's bike. She on the other hand, as a mid foot over spindle pedaler thinks they are the business as is. My solution to the problem was/is to hoarde a favorite vintage pedal that is no loger made. Plan b was being hatched in the garage earlier today as I was filing the upward points off of a pair of MKS sylvans. The points poke me in the ring toe bone when wearing thin shoes. I am guessing this is primarily a problem for guys with size 10 and up. Good luck making a little $$$ with it - fun stuff Rob - http://oceanaircycles.com/ On Oct 10, 12:14 pm, William wrote: > I modified some gripking/lamda pedals and youtubed it: > > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo0YlOqqISs > > Then BikeTinker blogged it: > > http://www.biketinker.com/2010/projects/grip-king-pedal-mod/ > > and today somebody connected the dots and asked me on my etsy store whether > I would do the mod for him for a fee. On MKS Sylvans and all the others that look the same, I always would just grab the point with a crescent wrench and bend it down flat. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] BikeTinker diverts me potential business
I just love your creativity! Hope you make a lot of money doing this improvement, or perhaps just making a bunch of the extra parts and RBW offers them on their site for those who want to address the same problem on those pedals. I didn't like the GKs when I tried them and preferred the sneaker pedal over the GK. However, I developed some right hip problems that I attributed riding free and went back to riding clipless pedals as I had no issues before switching. The hips are fine now and I love riding clipless but on most of my bikes now have the A530 pedals just in case I want to hop on the bike for a short ride and don't want to change shoes/sandals.
