[RBW] Re: Downtube shifter diehards vs. downtube shifter experimenters

2011-08-03 Thread Michael Hechmer
I have found that every system has some advantage. Brifters for riding in
heavy traffic; BE friction for touring; DT friction for pure joy riding; but
my tandem has BE indexed because I'm too far away to hear it, although I
find shifting the tandem with Shimano indexed pretty slow compared to the
instantaneous reaction of my Ram. with DT friction.

[RBW] Re: Climbing and the consequences

2011-08-03 Thread Michael Hechmer
The great thing about climbing is that every mountain has a top! And you
get to go downhill.

We did a short charity ride on the tandem over the weekend and the first
half was all uphill, climbing 1300+ feet in fifteen miles of mostly dirt
roads. Tandems don't like going uphill and the 130 year old team isn't too
good at it so we struggled to stay in contact with the peleton. But we left
the feed station with the leaders. No one had a chance of staying with us
on the downhill as we sat upright and coasted back to the start at 40 mph.
My stoker was screaming all the way, only later did I realize it wasn't pure
joy!

Now, riding into the wind seems to go on for ever, and when I turn around
that dang wind seems to turn too.

[RBW] Re: re: 2 top tubes - Y2TT plus (at the end of it) divisive cultural reference

2011-08-03 Thread Garth
I'm at a point in my life where I'm caring less and less about aesthetics of
a bike. 2TT's seemed odd from afar . but after I got a Bombadil frame
and loved the ride so much I forgot about the second TT. . .
.though it does make for a higher clamp position in my Park work stand which
I really DO sing praises for every time it goes up there!! I'm still a bit
choosy when it comes to color though .. lol.

Really, once I ride a bike I forget all the aesthetics it's about
the feel of the ride . and this is where the Bombadil takes me away to
bliss! Yeah I get the traditional look of a bike(I'm about GP's age)
. but so what this is now... not 1975. The ride and fit of this
bike is so far and above say ... my now sold 1983 Stumpjumper it's not even
a comparison... the Riv beats it in every way ... well except the the
cool BB/chainstays that could take ANY chainring combo, road or mtb.

The sloping tubes just seem great to me ... as they allow for higher bars
without any aids or noodly high stems. The only reason people object is
because they're used to a flat TT ... but who decided a flat TT was so
perfect? It was just a choice someone made and many followed that
doesn't make it any more "right". Cyclists ... like all humans can be
so set in their ways! Just because it was means it always must be the
same hmm that feels like a boat anchor to me. I love the
creativity of the Riv designs I'm sure they have even more creative
ideas but they have to scale back because because of the conservative nature
of the customers. I relish the changes, and look forward to getting a
Hunqapillar and maybe even a Sam :)

Campy friction downtube shifters *did* have a mind of their own about shifting
and combined with the Nuovo/Super Record generation of derailleurs were rather
vague. It's really kind of astonishing they had the reputation they did and
the death grip on the pro peloton and peloton wannabees that they did. And for
as long as they did. The technology didn't change for about 25 years until Sun
Tour came along with the slant parallelogram.

There's no need to apologize. My generation of cyclists (50+) fetishized Campy
Nuovo and Super Record, but that stuff frankly didn't really work all that
well. That said, I've still got my NR and SR derailleurs in a box in the
basement and I ain't giving them up. Hmmm, I may need to go check and see if
they're OK before I go to work.

[RBW] Re: Was gonna buy a Riv but didnt...

2011-08-03 Thread stevep33
I sold my Rambouillet and AHH. I got a Boulder Brevet (700c) and
liked it so much that I just picked up a Boulder 650b frameset. The
main improvement, IMO, is the lighter tubing which makes for a
livelier ride and the low trail geometry. I am liking the plain-ness
of these TIG frames too. That said, the lugged (Waterford-built)
Boulder frame would be my first choice for another lugged frame, and
it's a nice Riv alternative for 2k.

Custom bikes are unnecessary for me. I have normal sizing, and there
are great off the shelf or semi-custom alternatives. Just not worth
the extra time and money. That said, if I did decide to go custom, a
Kirk fillet brazed frame or a Hampsten Strada Bianca would be at the
top of the list. From what I hear David Kirk and Steve Hampsten are
both good to work with, and they make great bikes.

I'm a DT shifter. They work, they are simple, I like the look. I've
gotten pretty good at shifting both levers at once with the right
hand, so DTs usually aren't a hassle.

That said, I have been thinking it would be nice to switch my rough
stuff bike to brifters, because DT shifting is a bit awkward when
riding tricky trails. I'm impressed by the current generation of SRAM
brifters - a mega improvement from brifters of years ago.

+1 on STI, and for that matter SPD also. I have always heard you'll
damage STI in a crash, but I've never had that happen although
crashes, thank my personal deity, have been rare. I have, however, a
box full of broken BE shifters, which now are used/given/lent as spare
parts, and are almost completely a result of 0 mph tip-overs or some
such. If your in Litchfield, NE and your bike tips over while you
were taking a quick comfort break, and you BE snaps off, who's going
to fix it? Yes eventually STI shifters do run the course of a useful
lifespan, but the journey is worth it. Same goes for SPD's. Once you
get a pair of shoes (SIDI's for example) dialed-in, there is nothing
better. The A520/530 are my own preference, but YMMV.

I've been using bar end shifters since 1974 or 1975, currently have them
on something like 6 or 7 bikes, and not only haven't had a BE snap off,
have neither seen it, nor ever have heard of it before. And believe me,
I take plenty of "naturals," you could even call me Mr. Natural, alias

It is, and it's a modest up-charge.
I shortened the top tube on my new 650b by a cm, but I think it was
actually unnecessary now that I have the bike. This just confirms
that I don't need custom sizing.

All this said, Riv sets the bar very high in terms of getting the
details right every time, and Riv paint is second to none in
appearance and durability. (Boulder paint is fine, nothing special).

I really dislike riding in chacos, they are always too wide for me and
strike the crank on the inside when I pedal.

Tried them with mks touring pedals and grip kings, they are a no go for me.
Super comfortable for walking around though.

Tevas + grip kings are my favorite for long rides.
Birks + grip kings are my favorite if I am going to be riding for a while
and then walking around somewhere, tevas sort of suck for that.

[RBW] 26 vs 29...thought I knew which side I was on.

2011-08-03 Thread jinxed
Just some curious observation on wheel size.

I spent the years from @ 1989-2004 almost exclusively on 26" wheeled
mountain bikes in the dirt. I dabbled a bit with road bikes, cruisers,
folders, bmx bikes in there too, but for all intent I was a mountain biker.

Then I picked up a 700c cross bike that I would use for...well, cyclocross,
but never much gave thought to doing "mountain biking" on mainly because I
had a mountain bike to do that with.

Then my daughter was born and my cycling changed drastically. Not only was I
riding mainly in town, but I had picked up my first Rivendell as well. My
MTB collected dust, while I kept buying fatter and fatter tires and taking
the Rivendell on more varied terrain. After riding the Hilsen shod with 45mm
IRC knobbies on singletrack I sold the MTB.

That led me to thinking, or more to the point, eased my disdain for the 29er
mountain bike craze, and I got another mountain specific cannondale 29er.
Which I was honestly very surprised with, and enjoyed riding when I was able
to make time for the trails. It really did feel smoother to me than the
26"ers I had previously, but still mentally considered 26 as my first
choice. Anyway, long story short, we were hurting for space and I acquired
the nice mint condition 84 Rock Hopper that I slotted into the MTB spot in
my mind and sold the Cannondale. How could I go wrong...26" wheels should
feel like an old pair of jeans right?

Now we get to the point. Recently I have been riding off road more, and I
came to a personal realization. After riding the fatty tired Hilsen back to
back with the fatty tired Rock Hopper, I am solidly in the camp of enjoying
the larger diameter wheels off road.

I think the Rock hopper may be leaving the nest, and re-replaced with a
rigid 29'er. Time to start looking for a Karate Monkey!!

2011-08-03 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
I had a similar experience coming form 26" MTBs... had a B'stone MB2
for the 90's, then sold it when I ended up riding my then RB-T and
then my All-Rounder exclusively on the trails. Decided I wanted to
get back into actual mountain biking and ended up with a Karate
Monkey. What, a great bike! Not a fan of the rear fork end/sliders
on it though... sucks hugely for field repair of a flat. I might have
to trade it in for a Hunqapillar if a used one ever comes up on the
market.

[RBW] Re: Downtube shifter diehards vs. downtube shifter experimenters

2011-08-03 Thread Michael Hechmer
This thread seems to have divided into two parts, but I want to respond to
both.

I have broken two pairs of Ultegra STI shifters in crashes, fortunately not
irreparably so. The first one went down hard on a dirt road and was so
filled with dirt it would not work. I needed to flush nearly a whole bottle
of wd 40 through them to clean them out. The second was an endo through an
old style parallel sewer grate, which cracked both of the little plastic
caps and Shimano charged an ungodly amount for replacements. I have crashed
with BE and never had any problem, in fact it's hard to think what could
break.

Unrelated, I used Campy NR DT shifters and then the first version of Chorus
DT 7 spd shifters and I never found them "vague". Both of those, mated to
Campy derailleurs had a very definite overshift, which requires a very
slight backing up with the shifter. Once mastered it was second nature.

I could take a little of that.

Here in sunny Austin Texas we've had about 50 days over 100 degrees so
far and may break the record of 69 days set two years ago. Last night
it didn't drop below 100 until after 8pm and it's generally 80 degrees
by about 7am. And, we're about 10 inches behind on rainfall for the
year with a total still below 10 inches.

Makes keeping your miles up something of a challenge...

Oh, and thanks to list admin Jim for getting it out of limbo.

(Yes, this is just a cheap attempt to see if it will show up in the
new groups.)

I just rode RAGBRAI with exactly that combination (GK + Tevas) and had no
ill effects. It really just shows how different we all are.

I do wish I'd had something with toe protection in our tent city though as I
tore a toenail on a stake during a late night kybo run.

[RBW] Fishy Betty

2011-08-03 Thread grant
The craigslist "antique" one.here's the latest, kind of
interesting-

One of our customers contacted the guy, had planned to buy the bike
for as little as possible. Expected to meet him on the street down by
the corner near the liquor store, but one surprise after another, and
all good:

-- the guy met him at his (the guy's, the seller's) place-o-bizness
-- guy seemed normal, nice, forthcoming, not shyster-like or the least
bit shady
-- seller took the bike with some other stuff as payment for work
performed...when the woman couldn't pay. He said she was crying when
she dropped off bike etc.

We have the serial number and some particulars. The bike was bought
from us (not from one of our five dealers), and we'll try to track it
down. I think we'll be able to.

The repurchase price was $600.

If we can track down the original buyer, the rebuyer---who is, like,
the nicest kindest guy you'll ever meet---has offfered to take the
loss and return the bike, but of course we won't let that happen. If
he's able to return the bike, we'll cover him for it and toss in a bit-
o-reward in the deal, and then the woman gets her B back.

If we can't make that happen---for whatever reason -- then he'll keep
the bike.

If after that, the original owner comes forth, we'll work out some
happy thing for her.

On a side note, I contacted WDC police. told them we might have a
thief (turns out we didn't...unless he's supercon guy)-- and they
said, "We don't do that. Contact the FBI." Whoa.

May have an update, not sure. later.

[RBW] Re: Getting used to "Silver" barend shifters

2011-08-03 Thread Rex Kerr
Thanks to everybody who gave input...

I finally got around to doing something about the poor shifting. After a
particularly frustrating commute this morning I pulled it apart during a
break at work and:

* removed one chain link + set of side plates to increase chain tension
* retracted the b-limit screw a few turns
* swapped the floating & non-floating pullies in the r-der

Not sure which of these helped the most, or if it truly is a combination of
those three, but it shifted MUCH better on the way home. That said, it
really looks (to me and a co-worker who's a former bike shop mechanic) like
the hanger might be slightly out of alignment, so I might drop in to a local
shop to see if they have an alignment gauge to check it out -- I just need
to find a shop that I trust. :-)

[RBW] Re: Decision Potential

2011-08-03 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Well, I decided.

First, I should address the "why" more clearly. Primarily, sheet redundancy.
Secondarily (a close second), the ability to keep one bike shod with studded
tires through the winter. Thirdly (distant third), have two different
"arrangements" available at any one time, for those unexpected riding
opportunities and quirky ad hoc preferences. That is, sometimes you just wanna
ride Bullmoose, no matter what you've got set up or what you'll need the next
day! This would at least enable that.

Now, honestly... either the Hunqapillar or the Hillborne would provide
sufficient redundancy. The fact that the Hillborne is a pure duplicate doesn't
really matter with respect to redundancy. And I could put studded tires and any
of my cockpits and racks and baskets and bags on either bike; so reasons two
and three were also satisfied by either Hill or Hunqapillar.

But... the Hunqapillar's sizing just would not work. The 58 would pose issues
for getting the bars as high ad I like them. The 62 would be a challenge to
straddle comfortably, which I do often as a commuter waiting for lights and
what-not and when riding with my family.

So another 60cm canti-studded double-top-tube Hillborne is on lay-away for
delivery early next year. Green, this time. The recent July e-mail update
picture is a very flattering depiction of that green. If it looks like that in
person, I'll be thrilled.

Thanks for the info and opinions and questions; they all helge me think this
through.

I already know exactly how I'll build it. I'll do some side-by-side photos when
it's all set.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] Riv Branding

2011-08-03 Thread Rex Kerr
While riding home today I had somebody catch up with me and comment on my
bike, asking if it was a Riv. Interestingly, he's been the first to not ask
what an AHH was.

Most bike companies put their brand on the downtube and the model on the
top-tube, but Riv seems to go against the grain (something they NEVER do in
any other aspect!!) and put the model name in big letters, but leave the
company name relatively obscure.

I'm curious... it seems that there'd be some value to Riv to have their name
quite prominently displayed, and I know I wouldn't object to it. Anybody
know why their bikes deviate from the normal practice?

I love the Z lines on my Chaco shod feet. :-)

I hear a lot of complaints about riding in Chacos due to the width. I've
noticed the same, but I tend to pedal heel out, so I assumed that it was the
same problem that I have in all shoes (I ride extra long spindles, special
ordered, on my Frog pedals). I was actually thinking of ordering some "knee
saver" spacers to make more room for this very reason so that I could give
flat pedals another go...

That said, I rode almost 10 miles on the touring pedals that Riv sells with
power grips in my Chaco sandals last weekend and they worked out quite well,
even without the spacers, so it might have just been a matter of
becoming accustomed to the difference...

I don't know the area, but that appears to be about a 5% grade for 10 miles?
Perhaps I have the wrong location of the campground? How far is it? How
much climbing?

I'm tempted, but my AHH isn't set up for carrying much -- I wasn't planning
to use it for camping, that's what my Trek is for. Perhaps I should just
break down and get that front rack. :-)

[RBW] Re: Downtube shifter diehards vs. downtube shifter experimenters

2011-08-03 Thread velomann
Over a period of 40+ years and tens of thousands of bike miles on all
kinds of rigs and several good hard crashes, I have had 2 irreparable
shifter failures. The first was my Shimano 600 downtube shifters
(right 6-speed) the notches for indexing simply wore out. Thought I
have to admit I was living in a cascade rainforest at the time and
driving to work, so a lot of my riding on this bike was on rollers and
the downtube shifters (and headset and stem bolt) ended up with salt
corrosion from my sweat, so I think that contributed. But I also hear
these particular shifters were prone to failure. The second failure
was last year when my front 105 brifter died in the middle of a cross
race.I tried flushing with copious amounts of Triflow and all kinds of
tricks, but the catch mechanism was simply broke. Again, I've heard
from others that this particular Shimano 105 "double/triple" left
brifter fails commonly. All in all, like many things bike related, I'm
mostly amazed at how well even inexpensive components continue to
perform.

[RBW] Re: Riv Branding

2011-08-03 Thread Joe Bernard
My assumption is that it is the result of "Rivendell" - the original
production models from Waterford - becoming the high-end customs, so they
needed a way to differentiate the production Atlantis from the customs, then
kept at the practice as they became more of a "production bike" company
again. I personally dislike this approach. I owned a Romulus, and never
liked the name much. I always wished that it was a "Rivendell", with the
model name in smaller letters on the toptube.

I can see the problem, though. In the early '90s Schwinn established a
road-and-MTB line called "Paramount", while still producing custom high-end
Paramount road bikes. That probably pissed a lot of "real Paramount" owners
off, and still causes a mess on Craigslist.

Sooo..I don't really like the practice, but can't think of a way around it.
Helpful, no?

[RBW] Spotted a beautiful custom paint Sam Hill at RBW today

2011-08-03 Thread danmc
Very happy new owner getting outfitted for trip from SF to Inverness
in Marin this weekend. The color was a deep blue with a touch of
green. The bike looked great! Should have snapped a picture but maybe
someone at RBW HQ did?

Always a great visit. Offers to share lunch and lots of great bikes.
Got the headset spacers I need to keep moving on the Heron Wayfarer
rebirth - thanks Mark!

The Hunqapillar definitely turned me on to the bigger wheels concept
for mtb-ing. I wasn't expecting to like it as much, but the big wheels
do roll nicely over rough ground. You get a pretty large contact patch
to stick to things with.

[RBW] Phil "Rivy" freewheel wheelset opinions?

2011-08-03 Thread Ryan J
I was wondering if any of the members here have had experiences with the
Phil Rivy freewheel hubs. I was thinking about getting a set for my 650b
Sam Hillborne instead of using shimano cassette wheels. Never had much of a
problem with freewheels in the past, but I don't have any experience with
Phil hubs. They have a good reputation, anything to look out for? Anybody
question my sanity of going with a freewheel instead of a cassette hub? I
really like the looks of the hubs. Thanks.
