Lacing the saddle worked great to give it the right narrow shape. In
the end I sold this saddle because it was not firm enough. Still,
it's a nice saddle.

[RBW] Bismarck, North Dakota

2011-03-08 Thread cm
I recently moved from Tucson to Bismarck and was wondering if anyone
out there is in this area or has any experience riding in the area. I
know there are some bike paths around the city but was looking for
other suggested rides. Any advice or comments are greatly
appreciated.

Cheers!

[RBW] Re: Caprock Canyon State Park Trailway (Texas)

2011-03-08 Thread Jim Cloud
Clif,

I'd seen your photos on the "Tall Riders" Flickr group. That's a nice
looking Quickbeam! I don't really anticipate any possibility of going
to the Caprock Canyons trailway anytime sooner than late spring, and
maybe not until fall. At this point, my impression of the trail is
that it's pretty gnarly. I'm not sure that my bike(s) would be very
suitable for a ride on the trail, since they're more road oriented.
It appears to me that the Canyon trailway would probably be more
suitable for a mountain type bike, or maybe a 650B shod with really
wide (and tough!) tires.

If I go, I'd probably be most interested in hiking some of the Caprock
Canyon trails, with a secondary opportunity of riding portions of the
trailway.

[RBW] Re: Warning: non-scientific experiment under construction (650B vs 700C)

2011-03-08 Thread William
Update. I have three times in the log book now. The first one was on
700C wheels and I felt lousy, so I expect that I'll ignore that
2:09:45 time. The second ride confirmed that the first will probably
get tagged an outlier. I did the same ~26 mile hilly stretch through
the east bay hills in 1:51:52. Today I logged a third time, this time
on the 650B wheelset. With Hetres at 45psi, I did the route in
1:46:32.

There's still a lot of data to take. I'm trying to do each ride with
an honest hard effort, trying to beat my personal best each time,
regardless of what wheelset I am running. I wont even start to look
for trends or comparisons until I've gone back and forth at least a
few times between wheelsets. Clearly I could get significantly more
scientific with a power tap or similar, but I'm not that interested in
doing that.

The good news for me is that the bike feels great with both wheelsets,
and feels different. Different enough that I'll probably keep both
setups at the ready. Two bikes for the price of one! Yay me!

This might be old news, but Paul is making adapters for putting silver
shifters on their thumbies.

It's $21, but I probably would've done it this way instead of shimano had
they been out last fall when I built my hunqapillar. Good stuff, figured

Riv has 'em, too. Looks like that adapter would allow thumbies to
work with basically any downtube friction shifter now. That's pretty

[RBW] Re: Sigh. Busted compression washers on the Silvers. sigh.

2011-03-08 Thread charlie
No problem, I am going to make a vulcanized rubber mold and cast them
in mass. I am a jeweler by trade and it should be no problem making a
mold and casting a few...or more. I'll try to post the results
sometime soon. Maybe after this weekend.

[RBW] WTB: Thule fork mount long trays

2011-03-08 Thread cyclotourist
I have a new car with a shorter roof line, and can't use my existing short
tray racks. Wondering if someone has any long trays lying that around they
want to sell. I don't need the actual fork mount part, just the trays. One
would be okay, but two would be better.

Thanks,
David
