[RBW] Re: Roadeo vs AHH. Your thoughts?
I love the clearcoat. Need to post a couple new photos, as I have rotated (forward) and lowered the bars a bit, switched backnto my Brooks finesse saddle, and swapped pedals. I also had a good fitting done locally, and I we changed the saddle height a bit. Fits great. My height is a tad over 5' 8-1/2", and mt pbh is 84.55. My saddle height is in the 74.5-75 range depending on shoes/pedals. It's 74.5 on the Roadeo. oh, I almost forgot...I am running JB Greens now. Absolutely love them. Cushy and speedy! Will add new photos of the bike today, if I can grab some time. On Dec 9, 4:39 am, Kentileguy wrote: > Wow , that clearcoat is nice. [RBW] Re: Which Rivendell bike?
Every time I think I need a new Riv (and then acknowledge, yet again, that I can't afford one) I realize that I could get most of what I think I want in a new bike with a tire and/or cockpit swap on my Sam. Gotta love it. (Though maybe not so good for Riv's bottom line! Thanks Mike.. I am still going to hold out hope of selling the whole bike, but if no one pulls the trigger by the end of the year I may decide to part it out. RE: [RBW] Re: Which Rivendell bike?
Yes, color primarily :^) Luckily the Hillborne only comes in one standard color now. After seeing Velouria's Sam on her blog "Lovely Bicycles" I knew I wanted one. The Roadeo does seem to be different in that it is primarily made for speed and, who can resist a Homer? Gorgeous blue! I guess it's OK to own more than one Rivendell and I can see I am headed that way! best, Jim > Date: Wed, 8 Dec 2010 23:37:43 -0800 > Subject: [RBW] Re: Which Rivendell bike? > From: allan_f...@aracnet.com > To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com > > I know I said not to tell, but was the color what settled it for > you? :-) Price sure is nice. > > Enjoy! > -Allan > > On Dec 8, 2:08 pm, jim phillips wrote: > > Thanks guys! [RBW] WTB--130mm bolt circle chainguard to cover a 42T ring
I have a road triple that I want to set up as a compact double. It's a Sugino-made, Specialized branded crankset, from the last 5 years or so. The bolt circle is 130/74 and the rings are 52/42/28. I want to use it as a compact double, Keven-style, by replacing the 52T ring with a chainguard. The Spot-Brand one would be nearly perfect: http://spotbrand.com/bikes/product-page/guards/ My only three gripes would be that I'd prefer silver, would prefer no graphics, and would prefer something less than $44 plus tax plus shipping. [RBW] Re: Two Hillbornes in the wild
Some speculation here on my part, but I'll bet when Grant sits down to design a bike, he figures "I'll just give it plenty of room so no one has to worry about tire size." And here we are, filling up those spacious forks. After 7 years on 35s (Pasela, T-serve, Marathon, each "35" chubbier than the last), now they look kinda skinny on my Atlantis. This leads to the theorem: "Rubber expands to fill the available frame clearance". dougP On Dec 8, 9:32 pm, Earl Grey wrote: > Hi Peter, > > here is a pic of my Sam with true 42mm > semi-knobbies:http://www.flickr.com/photos/25150...@n08/4211601286/ > > Looks like there is room for a fender, at least a plastic one. [RBW] FS: Suntour XC Pro Canti Brakes, NOS
Hi, For sale: Suntour XC Pro cantilever brakes, front and rear. NOS, new-in-bag (not box), never mounted, perfect condition. These are the last-generation bronze color ones, and they work fine with road brake levers like Ergo or STI, as well as with old-style mountain bike brake levers. $75, with shipping via Priority Mail included to the CONUS PayPal best way to pay. Dave, who might regret selling these brakes someday but also has a huge group of Suntour parts mainly new which when he gets them all together will sell as a package deal -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: generator powered Christmas lights
Thanks for the info - now I REALLY want to figure this out :-) I guess I'm mostly worried about the fact that Chrismas lights run on 120v, and the generator is rated at 6v. [RBW] Drops or Moustache bars for Atlantis
If you have (or had) an Atlantis, do (did) you prefer it set up with Moustache bars or with drops such as the Noodles? My likely use would be mostly commuting, some gravel/dirt, non-paved rail trails, but no derring-do rough stuff. Maybe short, weekend tours where the daily mileage doesn't exceed 60 and usually stopping at least every 10-15 miles to gawk, stretch, snack, take photos. [RBW] Re: generator powered Christmas lights
> Chrismas lights run on > 120v, and the generator is rated at 6v" OK that statement tells me you're going to need a little bit more help than a Radio Shack URL. :-) You can't use lights that are designed for 120V line power. And I have no idea what power those draw, but it's probably more than 3W per strand. You want something like these: http://www.christmaslightsetc.com/p/Battery-Operated-10-Multicolored-Mini-Christmas-Lights-6-inch-Spacing-Green-Wire--19469.htm Since you only have about $4 spent on the lights, just cut off the battery case and connect the wires to your hub instead. The hub has it's own current limiting so it should be safe. As for the lights, if you over-drive them and they burn out, meh, you're only out $4. Or if it makes you nervous try two strands wired in series, (which would be connect positive of strand A to negative of strand B). I think the worst that would happen then is the lights be too dim. Good luck, -Allan PS> I'm ASSUMING the generator hub has an internal current limiter. I know the SON hubs do. I don't know your Shimano hub does. If you do something to let the magic white smoke out of your hub, please don't blame me. [RBW] Re: Drops or Moustache bars for Atlantis
Forrest: My Atlantis has always had Noodles and I like them a lot. The are about even with the seat. I like drops because I like to change position a lot and not sit the same way for long periods. This is my bike for at least 95% of my riding which includes day trips, long tours, knocking around town, some fire roads & hiking trails (but nothing epic / awesome / gnarly). I tried Moustache bars on another bike for a while but they just didn't work for me. Lots of people use them and like them. Some people like to change bars often enough they set up 2 complete bar / brake lever / shifter combos with cable splitters. I've never done it but have heard people say it's a quick job to change bars once you've got it set up to do so. By even thinking about the merits of two different bars, you're on the slippery slope to collecting bars, stems, brake & shift levers. It's loads of fun, you can't go wrong. dougP On Dec 9, 3:11 pm, Forrest wrote: > If you have (or had) an Atlantis, do (did) you prefer it set up with > Moustache bars or with drops such as the Noodles? Re: [RBW] Re: Drops or Moustache bars for Atlantis
I've had my Atlantis set-up with both 'stache bars and Noodles. I definitely prefer the Noodles. I like mustache bars a lot too. For short rides in traffic and trail riding I think I might even prefer them to the Noodles. But the Noodles aren't even close to being bad for those things; and they're better for everything else. At least in my opinion. Lots of comfortable hand positions with the Noodles. I've got the 48cm version and the wide flats make it almost like having a flat bar. And the flat section behind the brake hoods is wonderful. Shaun Meehan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I've had both on my Atlantis' I always thought Moustache Bars were the cat's meow but I have noodles on there now and I'm really content with them. I still have M bars on a couple of bikes and they will stay that way but the Atlantis is destined to die a slow painful death with noodles. I like them both. My first Atlantis had M bars and I once rode it 550 miles in a week and was quite comfortable the whole while. They both work for me. Not much help I know but my personal experience. About the only drawback I have with moustache bars is they limit my choice of handlebar bags and there is less space for mounting lights, computer, etc. Here is my bike on a camping trip this fall: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jhuber/5133996224/in/pool-rivendellatlantis On Dec 9, 7:56 pm, erik jensen wrote: > shaun summarizes my experience, as well. > > ~erik > > > > > > On Thu, Dec 9, 2010 at 4:55 PM, Shaun Meehan wrote: > > I've had my Atlantis set-up with both 'stache bars and Noodles. Thanks, everyone, for all the opinions and info. Sounds like I can't make a big mistake. I believe I will start out with moustache and see how it goes. I have Noodles on my Riv LongLow and love them for the type of riding I do with it (longer rides on pavement). -- Forrest On Dec 9, 7:17 pm, Jack wrote: > I have moustache bars on my Atlantis and I really love 'em. Re: [RBW] Re: Drops or Moustache bars for Atlantis
I'll see you and bid you an Albatross bar! I first tried the M-bars on my Bombadil and loved them for the rough trails. However, I couldn't get hand and neck pain free when riding on the streets on even short commutes. Since I had the 48 Noodles on my AHH I swapped the M-bars and put a set of 48 Noodles on the Bombadil, which I transferred to the Atlantis when I exchanged it for a better fit. With the Noodles I managed to ride mostly hand-pain free, but couldn't get rid of an accute pain I develop on the left side of my neck/left shoulder. This kind of pain doesn't always happen in the morning rides, but it invariably kills me during my evening commute after I've worked on the computer during the day. Always the left side, never the right side. In the meantime, I built the Betty Foy with Albatross bars and started becoming more "aware" of many Atlantis and other bikes built with Albatross bars. Realized that Grant says they are his favorite bars and remembered Jay's Hunqa video where he is riding it with Albatross bars and conversations I had both with him and Keven where they were gently suggesting them to me. I guess like all the other cycling fit paradigms that Rivendell has crushed in my mind, this one was a lost cause for me as well. Started re-reading older posts regarding Albatross bars and found Ray Shine's comment that once he put Albatross bars on his bikes he never looked back. So, even though I still have the M-bars and now the Noodles here, I have borrowed the Albatross bars from the Betty and put them on the Atlantis to see how they feel. I have to say it looks quite stunning once my previous paradigm got destroyed, and I expect to start commuting with it and see how everything feels. If I manage to get rid of all the pain, it would be absolutely unbelievable! Have you considered Albatross bars for your Atlantis? Based on what your riding type description is, that might be another option to consider. René -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Drops or Moustache bars for Atlantis
Hi Forrest - I've tried moustache bars on a bunch of my bikes. They usually last a couple rides and I'll go back to drops. I really want to like the m- bars - they look classic cool and old timey. Nice. My experience however tells me 1.) I don't like leaning that far forward to brake (reverse bar-end levers can fix that), and 2.) no matter what they say there's only one hand position that works. YMMV. Somewhere about 20 miles I wear them out. Maybe for a grocery getter. I don't know. I was lucky to purchase a couple randoneer bars from Jitensa before they ran out. They are enough of a drop bar for my liking, having a shallowish drop to slightly flaring out ends. The portion that the levers mount to are slightly angled though after the first two times on the hoods I don't notice. They are a more moderate version of the Grand Cru Randoneer, but nicer - made by Nitto. I don't know if they will do another run. Model 136AA. http://www.jitensha.com/eng/bars_e.html Unless you've got wicked narrow shoulders you'd probably want the wider ones. I've found I prefer a shallower bar because I don't have to go sky high with the stem to have comfortable use of the drops. I wouldn't mind trying a Mary bar or something close to it just for fun. Well I certainly had lot to say about nothing. The only cure for the moustache bar dilemma is to try one. Amen. The only reluctance I had on the Quickbeam was that it wouldn't fit wider tires, but then I found I could ride 28s on dirt roads, and 32s on singletrack, and 35s on gravel, and 40s just 'cause... and now I have to trim the knobs off 700c fatties, and still they bzzap! on my fender when torqued. I really like M-bars for all-round riding up to a couple hours. Longer rides, and I miss the drop position. Be sure to get a shorter stem with them though.
