[RBW] Deore V-Brake issue on Hillborne

2010-07-04 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Hi!

Building up my Hillborne, I tried to put Deore V-brakes on it.
However, the Deores would not slide all the way down the brake post/
stud/boss/whatever. The pin which anchors the spring in one of the
holes on the brake post did not fully insert into any of the 3 holes.
Also, the front brake was protruding far enough that it interfered
with the mini front rack.

Anybody else have this experience? If so, do you feel the brake will
function reliably with the anchor not fully seated? Did you find a way
to fully seat the anchor?

(I also had some Tektro 857AL brakes; they fit fine. And they also
look stupendously ugly, especially with salmon-colored pads. They
work. But did I mention how ugly they are? Wow, are they ugly. But
this is the sort of sacrifice one makes, since the hideousness of
their ugliness and the shame of being associated with that horrible
sight in any way is far outweighed by the glory of being able to
actually ride one's Hillborne.)

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] Re: double-top-tube hillborne sighted in wild

2010-07-04 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
More quantity, probably no more quality. It is now ride-able (and is
really nice to ride!). But obviously many things are yet to be done.

Previously thought unthinkable, I have discovered that there are in
fact non-weird bikes with Handlebars That Are Too High. Which is truly
great! I'll lower them later. More build pics after fleshing out
stuff...

René and Jim,
Thank you! The camera is a Flip UltraHD, and the little tripod that

super easy to use and have a nice looking final product.

Re: [RBW] Re: Shorts--MUSA alternatives

2010-07-04 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Late to the discussion, but anyway: I use well chosen shorts from Goodwill,
where I, at any rate, can find top quality for $4.79. My best are a
Patagonia pair and another, longer one, both of good quality nylon and cut
loose and long enough that they don't dig in in front or slip down in back
when you are bent over the bar. Secured rear pockets, decently loose side
pockets, high enough waist, well made, dry quickly. I wear them over regular
boxers up to 30 miles.

And I've got a number of very tightly woven cotton shorts, cut similarly,
and, apart from getting caught in the rain, they perform as well as the
nylon shorts.

IME, the key is: long enough legs; high enough waist/low enough crotch; and
a cut that is not tight but still trim enough to stay put in the huge wind
of your travel. Oh, and decent bike fit, too.

[RBW] Bikes in Europe

2010-07-04 Thread kcwc10
Greeting,
We just returned from a trip to England, France, Italy, and Germany,
where, of course, I had my eye on all the bikes. Less eye candy, more
working bikes with lots of beausage. Germany had the greatest variety
of kinds of bikes on the road; saw double top tubes, tandems with
wedgie in back, bent in front, lots of internal gears and dynamo front
hubs, but most notably, large frames, fattish tires, fenders, and
high handlebars. :-)

[RBW] July 4th Weekend Webdeal

2010-07-04 Thread cyclofiend
Hey all -

Was enjoying a strong cup of coffee this morning and wandered over to
the RBW site to find a short note from GP. In addition to some cool
Renovelo pix, there was also notice of a quick-n-dirty deal if you
make a web order this weekend -

http://www.rivbike.com/blogs/knothole_post/253

Since I needed some brake pads and have been kicking myself for not
nabbing a grey/orange RBW cap when I visited a couple weeks ago, I
tapped out a quick +$20 order. Not pushing it for anyone else, but if
you had a couple of quick needs, it seemed like a good idea.

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled holiday...

[RBW] hello newbee here.

2010-07-04 Thread Tiny Dancer
Hi everyone!

What a busy list. I joined because I want to buy a new Rivendell when money
allows. I need one for grocery gettin' and taking the dog to the vet, some of
our local trailnet rides and some radonnuering rides. I picked the Sam as I
will do some light touring/camping and love my roadie's config. It's a Lemond
Versailles WSD '08. I don't know alot about components just alittle about
shimano and was recommended to get at least shimano 105 which now I'd like to
upgrade that.

I also love mbiking, have a Specialized FSR for that and a Bridgestone T700
touring bike that's 24 yrs old.

So most of what you guys are talking about is mumbo jumbo to me. I looked up
barcons but don't really know what lugs or braised stuff are..yet! Oh I want
the pretty orange with the hammered fenders. And I have to be in the drops.

I'm also getting a folder too, bike friday to commute to work as anything left
outside my job would get stolen. I'm petite so usually go with the wsd config
on bikes. Any suggestions, or tips would be greatly appreciated. I like in the
st louis area in IL, work in the city.

I think Rivendell bikes are beautiful.

xx,janine

[RBW] Re: Bleriot Build is Coming Along

2010-07-04 Thread S.Cutshall
Thanks.

Have a lot of lil' tweaks to start tweakin' today [we aren't a big 4th
of July family ~cept the fireworks, which the daughter goes beezerk
over]...

Twine the bars.
Level the saddle better.
Tighten the bars [as I found out yesterday, quite a few miles from
home: needing a 'special' tool for the stem has its downsides].
Install the new cyclometer [so I can get back to my OCD'esque mileage
keeping -had to memorize where I rode, and then spent nearly an hour
recreating it on Bikely once home last night]. :-)
Get the B&M IQ Fly headlight installed.
...and then ride a lot today.

Still trying to acclimate to these Nifty Swifty's. Really like the
soft'ish feel on bumpy stuff, but taking corners at higher speeds/and
climbing steepy's... not so sure I am in Like with them. I keep
thinking the rear is flat'ing and/or I am going to fishtail the rear
of the bike out from under me.

Might try the Grand Bois or Pari-Motos.

[RBW] Re: July 4th Weekend Webdeal

2010-07-04 Thread Steve
Nice link and time to support RBW during these recessionary cash
drought times.

RBW Intern Emil, shown sawing through the official Corporate Bike Rack
to extract his locked frame, needs to spend a day in Oakland or
Berkeley learning from the pros. A trip to Harbor Freight ("Habba
Flate") for a cheap Chinese angle grinder would have turned that
Kryptonite into shavings and had his bike free in a couple of minutes
with the loss of only the lock.

[RBW] Re: Paul Racer Brake Pads

2010-07-04 Thread benzzoy
The one flaw with the Paul Racer brakes (I have a few sets) is that
they require a bit of "extension" from the mounting points to clear
the "lobe" at the business end of each caliper arm. Thus, one cannot
slap on a nice set of Campagnolo brake holder/pads or an idle set of
Koolstop Eagle Claw IIs without running into clearance issues.

Nevertheless, the Yokozuna pads' mounting hardware (notably the
spacers) look identical to the Koolstop Thinline threaded pads' so you
should have no problem using those.

The Pari-Moto inflation range (as printed on the sidewall) is 55-75
psi. There is a picture of this on the Riv site in the Pari-Moto
product listing. I don't know about the Cypres, but the Hetre max is

[RBW] Re: Deore V-Brake issue on Hillborne

2010-07-04 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Ahh... well, it actually looks like you had the same "issue" I had.
That is, there's a small amount of space between the brake itself and
the place where the brake normally seats on the canti-stud. Maybe
there's less on yours; I can't tell that closely. Sounds like it's not
an issue for you. I may put the Deores back on and see if I can get it
a little closer.

Yes, I too had the spacer issue. I used part of the set of spacers
from a linear pull brake shoe threaded post. Same small amount of
space. I imagine that using that technique I might be able to put on
Paul Motolite brakes some time in the future. Still thinking about
that one.

The brakes I've got on it now didn't need the spacer. But I figured it
doesn't hurt either. But when I first put the spacer on I wasn't
comfortable with the length of the mini's fork-crown through-bolt that
the spacer left for the nut behind the fork crown to secure. So I used
a Sheldon's Fender Nut. I figure with a fender nut I could get another
centimeter of space (which I understand the Motolites may require).

Thanks for the photo!

Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] FYI: VO 107mm BB and Sugino XD2 crank incompatibility

2010-07-04 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Hi!

I tried to mount a Sugino XD2 crank from RBW on a 107mm VO bottom
bracket and couldn't make it work. Mounting the crank onto the
spindle, before I had slid it on far enough to get the appropriate
torque on the crank bolt, the inner portion of the crank arm
interfered with the bottom bracket itself! At first when I was having
trouble turning the cranks I thought... hmmm, did I ruin a bearing or
something? But no, it was just that the crank arm was literally jammed
up against the bottom bracket itself. Just plain weird.

Anyway, I suspect both the VO bottom bracket and the XD2 crank I have
are perfectly fine normal examples of their kind. And I suspect the VO
BB is a fine product in general, as is the XD2 crank. They just didn't
work together for me.

The only other bottom bracket I had lying around was a 113mm Truvativ,
which turns just fine for now. When it shows age, I may replace it
with a larger VO. I wasn't really very close to the required torque on
the crank when it came in contact with the bottom bracket. It isn't
obvious that a 110mm VO bottom bracket would work. I suspect a 113mm
would, though.

Perhaps I should just get the 107mm from RBW. This would give me the
intended chainline. However, I'm going to eyeball carefully my current
set up. I haven't concerned myself with Q-factor up to this point;
longer spindles on a bottom bracket don't bother me as long as the
chainline is reasonable for how I ride. I need to give that more
thought. I may even go with a 118mm BB if the chainline is okay. At
that point, the crank arms might just slip right past the two-legged
Pletscher kickstand when its deployed. That basically turns the
kickstand into a work stand. (That and a couple of ceiling-mounted $3
bicycle hooks were the only stand I used to the build the bike up with
in the first place.)

Anyway... just in case anybody else tries the 107mm VO BB with an XD2
crank. I wouldn't expect it to work right out of the box.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] Re: FYI: VO 107mm BB and Sugino XD2 crank incompatibility

2010-07-04 Thread charlie
That sounds kind of odd to me. I use a 107 BB with a Sugino and never
had crank arm interference. Actually I've used three different Sugino
triple cranks and one FSA square taper crank with the 107mm sized BB
and no problems at all. I'll bet that bottom bracket or the crank arm
is machined over sized slightly, making for a bad fit. A 107mm BB
spindle ought to be a 107mm regardless of brand.
