[RBW] Re: Your Favorite Handlebar Bag

2010-06-17 Thread Buck
I've been following this thread for a while and not responding because
I don't have/want a large handlebar bag. I'm more into day rides and
just need something smaller. After looking at a bazillion different
bags (Brand V, Carradice, Ortlieb, etc.) and trying to get the right
look/functionality to match my old-school Atlantis (hammered honjos,
shellacked bars, a Keven on the saddle), I went with the Acorn
handlebar bag and I love it. Here's why:

It more or less matches the Keven (in tan). So it looks right on the
bike. I wanted a separate secure pocket on the back or side for my
cell phone. Another for a point and shoot camera. The two pockets on
the back of the Acorn with fasteners are perfect.

I needed enough room for a sandwich, a wind-shirt and a few odds and
ends (tools, lock, etc., in Keven). That fits nicely in the zippered
main compartment.

I did not want to have to use a rack or decaleur because I wanted to
be able to ride the bike without the bag on it, and I just wanted a
nice clean look when the bag wasn't on there.

I wanted it to be small enough to not affect handling.

The Acorn is perfect because it is extremely well made. Tensioned
properly, it is quiet and secure. It is beautiful to look at when I am
riding and easy to access. It stays dry.

It only costs $100 (feels weird saying "only" $100).

And... I felt good that I was supporting a husband and wife business
that they are passionate about.

There you have it... Buck

[RBW] Cork Grips: affixing and removing

2010-06-17 Thread Jeffrey
A newbie question: Is it possible to use the cork grips on Albatross
bars without using glue (just to test them out)?

If one uses the thick glue that RBW recommends, how does one remove
the grips later -- cut them off?

Thanks,

I've found taking a couple layers of masking tape or one layer of
cloth bar tape will let you get the grips on and tight but still make
it POSSIBLE to remove them.

Rubber Cement works, but is reasonably easy to detach (a little water and a
good twist.) Or a light spritz of hairspray.

Or a light spritz of hairspray.

You coupled people can help on this. What brand works? I bought some
non-aesol hairspray and it did not help.

Answering the OP, while the standard cork grips Riv sells needed help
when I put them on the Albatross, now that I moved up to the
Portuguese grips, I find that they fit reasonably tight without any
thing between the grip and bar.

I really like the Portuguese grips. I brush on a very light coating
of amber shellac. Just enough to make them a little darker and bring
out the grain. They are comfortable and look great.

That said, I'd bet a Rivendale coin purse that Grant & Crue don't
really care either way as long as the person[s] mispronouncing the

Saying a word incorrectly, is still saying the word in the end... for

Well I think this whole thread is getting very high-on-the-horse,
maybe I'll just call Brant Paterson at Riverdale and axe him what he

Hi,
I have one. It's for 25.4 bars. The box says it is 110mm, but it is the same
length as a Nitto Pearl 100mm. It has been inserted one time and has a mark on
it as a result. If you think you may want to buy it let me know.

Cheers!

I blame Cannondale..seriously. I think people know or sorta know it is

streams cross, words mash, and out comes Rivendale.

do i ever get tired of it? nope.

[RBW] Re: do you ever get tired of....

2010-06-17 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Really, it could be worse. I drive a Delorean and you wouldn't believe
how many people ask if it came with a gram of coke in the glove box,
or if I have a flux capacitor, or try to tell me it has a Ford engine,
or if they all came "painted silver." On the other hand, people
constantly want to photograph it, sit in it, see how the doors work,
etc. So, like with riding a Rivendell, there are perks, too, to owning
and riding something unusual and sophisticated.

2010-06-17 Thread James Warren

This reminds me of a pastime that my brother and I accidentally stumbled upon:
registering the excellent erroneous bike names that appear from time to time in
print in classified "for sale" listings. Two of our favorites have been
"Diamond Bag" and "Ken&Dale".

(If we get off-topic allowances, I definitely just burned one of mine.)

There's Rivendale and its lower-brow cousin, Riverdale (Archie's High

get bills from $50,000- a year vendors addressed to Riverdale. You
tell them once or twice, but if nothing changes you just l let it go,
or compare it to BP's and Louisina's and Brown Pelican's problems.
Still, we're all happy to see it spelled right!

I dunno about nookyooler, but axe is prolly 17th century English Aristocrat
by way of tidewater VA and Carolinas, as is much dialect we consider
southern and uneducated; like "et" and "ain't" and dropping "ng"s and the
drawl and slurring -- simply toppin', ol' fella. As I understand it,
southern speech remains heavily infected by old English pattnerns that have
long since been lost in England, as well as black patterns.

So perhaps "Riven DALE" is simply southern and aristocratic and thus to be
imitated.

I personally think that "ain't" fills a huge gap in our language and ought
to be encouraged; as, too, "y'all". Seriously.

Just out of curiosity; what's the difference between the Dynamic and
the Techno Deluxe? I was looking at some pics of the Dynamic online
and it looks the same to me.

What are the gaps that they fill? I can see the utility of "ya'll",
though the apostrophe is a PITA, but "ain't" doesn't seem to fill a
need that I can tell.

As far as I know:

1. Dynamic is 26.0 only
2. The h-bar fixing bolt is tucked under on the Dynamic
3. The quill length is shorter on the Dymanic

-Scott [who very well could be wrong about all of this -and I am
certain will have it pointed out quickly-]

one thing I know.. the Pearl 10 is actually 107mm... don't ask me why.
The 110 Dynamic is 110mm. seems perfectly logical to me.

2010-06-17 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Instead of the awkward and grammatically inaccurate "aren't I", you say
"ain't I" -- Ain't I smart?

Note that the singular of y'all is "yew", as in "Ha yew?" Seriously, I think
a locution such as "y'all he'p me now" is old English of a certain class and
possibly region. A co worker from Balimer (Merlund) and her Virginia
boyfriend found, in London, that the Brits could easily understand him but
not her.

OK, Jim, no more.

I think it all comes down to 5 year-olds. My daughter had used the word
"amn't" pronounced em-ent for "I am not going to go". It seems reasonable
to someone not too anchored in rules.
