I use the 60mm steel Berthoud fenders. They work very well and have great
coverage. I got them from Wallingford Bikes.

[RBW] Re: Fenders for Big Apples?

2010-05-30 Thread Philip Williamson
I think they would not work. At least not easily and optimally.

My 45mm Smokes were smaller than 45mm, and I don't think they'd fit
under ANY fender. Right now, I'm running (rocking/rubbing)... ...I
have mounted on my Quickbeam 42mm IRC Mythos "slicks" with the knobs
cut off, under 52mm Zeppelins. They're really close. Popping off a
speed bump makes the front go "zzzp!" and anytime the rear fender gets
knocked, there's some fussing involved to get the clearance under
control.

I have never owned Big Apples, so your experience may differ happily.

2010-05-30 Thread David Sprunger
René,

You asked for the mixte story, so here’s one although maybe not the
one you had in mind. When my wife and I were engaged in the mid-80s,
she volunteered that instead of an engagement ring, she would prefer a
new bicycle. Being frugal self-sufficient graduate/medical students,
we ended up with a lower-end neon Specialized mountain bike that she
rode for some years before putting it aside for a used XO-2.

After two decades of marriage, our circumstances had changed, so for
our 20th anniversary, I bought an unbuilt Glorius frame on ebay and
built up the kind of bike I wish we could have afforded in 1987
(although such a bike was probably not available then). The
Specialized is still in the basement for nostalgia’s sake.

Some pictures are here:
http://www.cord.edu/faculty/sprunger/bikes/glorius/

The story doesn’t really have a moral except that the Glorius is a
great bike and I married wisely.

[RBW] Roadeo v. Soma ES?

2010-05-30 Thread ed k
Greetings non-lurkers -

I like the idea of a so-called club racer to go beside the Bombadil,
but the Roadeo comes in freakishly small sizes, not fit for a healthy
98cm PBH. Can't understand why

Can anybody contrast/compare to the Soma ES
(http://somafab.com/extrasmoothie.html)? Besides the fact that it is
welded and 1/4 the cost? It comes in a 66cm (C-T) which should be OK.

I know, I should be contemplating I.F., but if this is a
quick-and-dirty solution I'll take it for a few years while I save up
some cash.

Bonus Riv reference: Requires long-reach brakes like Riv's Silver Sidepulls!

[RBW] Re: Roadeo v. Soma ES?

2010-05-30 Thread Mike
Actually the Soma doesn't require the Silver sidepull brakes which are
extra-long. What you want for the Soma are brakes with a reach of
57mm. These used to referred to as "standard reach" brakes. Tektro and
Shimano both make brakes with a 57mm reach.

That Soma frame is nice and if a Roadeo or IF is out of reach
financially it's a great option.

[RBW] Re: Click in the left grip king

2010-05-30 Thread jlvota
It sounds like you may have a problem with the spindle bearings. I
would start with what newenglandbike said and check the spindle nut.
The bearings may be rough for a few reasons:

1. Whenever bearings are line manufactured, there is not as much
attention to detail when packing bearings. The bearings could just be
a little dry and squirting some grease in there may fix the problem.

2. A lot of times, the spindle bearings get over-tightened. This
happens when there is not enough play in the spindle between the two
retaining nuts on the spindle axle. This can cause the bearings to be
sort of crunchy, but can easily be fixed. You will first have to
loosen the outer nut that holds the retaining nut in place, and then
just slightly loosen the retaining nut (I would recommend 1/4 turn at
a time) until you get the spindle to the perfect spot. Your
adjustment reaches perfection when you have minimal play, but the
pedals spin smoothly. You can get your pedals way smoother making
this adjustment but it takes a little bit of patience.

I wish I would have seen this post a little earlier, I just got done
rebuilding an pair of Atom 700s and I could have taken pictures; they
are built the same way. Let me know if you have any questions.

[RBW] Re: Another post about compact doubles / drivetrain questions

2010-05-30 Thread Angus
Jason,

I don't know which model of Simplex you have, but use caution with old
French bike parts!
I have a number of Simplex derailleurs, I do not have a front Simplex
derailleur that will handle a triple. Many of the Simplex rear
derailleurs struggle with a 28, let alone a 30. There were also some
Simplex specific rear derailleur mountings a long time ago.

I love old French bike parts and I love riding my bikes, because the
were often in conflict I have given up trying to make old French bike
parts work (they usually don't)except for the Simplex
Retrofriction shifters recently given to me... :-)

One really cool thing about Simplex derailleursthe plastic ones
were often one badly missed shift away from scattering the road with
broken derailleur parts and one's lost dignity...they seemed to add a
small element of excitement to the ride :-)

I recently converted my Rambouillet from a triple (24-36-50) to a
double (34-50). I removed the inner chain-ring from a Ritchey Logic
triple and changed to a shorter bottom bracket spindle. I don't see
the point of going from a triple to a double and keeping the same BB/Q
factor.

Which reminds me, now that it is a double I can use that plastic
Simplex front derailleur!

[RBW] Quickbeam Sugino XD2 on old Centurion?

2010-05-30 Thread Crazy4Suki
Hi, I have an old Centurion Lemans in my garage with downtube
shifters. I can manage most rides with it as is, but I'd like to be
able to do long rides with hills so I started looking at other
options. I ordered the Quickbeam Sugino XD2 for the Centurion as it
has 40/32T which should help me with hills. With its current 49/39
setup, I never use the big chainring.

Does anybody know if I'll also need a new derailler for it? I wanted
to keep the changes (and related costs) to a minimum, so did not order
a derailer.

You might call them at Riv/SOMA and see if the San Marcos/AMOS is close to
shipping. They did say they would be making a 63 cm frame, which might work
for you given they are using the expanded frame design on that model.

That would certainly be closest to the Roadeo in terms of design and
handling.

I do recall seeing some threads on the ES on the iBob list, though not

[RBW] Re: Roadeo v. Soma ES?

2010-05-30 Thread Dave Craig
I'm also not in the size range of a Rodeo (94cm PBH).

It so happens that I do have a Bombadil and a Soma ES just as you are
considering. At the time I got the Smoothie ES, I got it instead of a
Rambouillet.

So, while I can't really compare the Rodeo and Soma, I can appreciate
the consideration of having the lighter road bike and the heavier
touring/mountain bike. I like my Smoothie. It's set up with compact
cranks and a 9 speed cluster, with clipless pedals and brifters. I run
32 mm tires on it. I have other bikes that I ride more often and I've
considered selling it many times, but every time I ride it I do enjoy
the feel. It is a fine bike and I've been very happy with it.

The story doesn’t really have a moral except that the Glorius is a
great bike and I married wisely.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam Sugino XD2 on old Centurion?

2010-05-30 Thread charlie
I had the same bike and converted it to a triple and no you won't need
a new rear or front derailleur. You will need to slide the front
derailleur down closer to the 40 tooth ring (about a chains width gap
or a little less) to account for the smaller 40 Tooth large ring. You
may however need a different bottom bracket and I would just get one
from Riv. You'll probably need either a 110mm or 113mm one. If the
old one works without rubbing and it shifts your are good to go but
the new sealed bearing units are nice and easy to install.

I remember there was a discussion on the list when the bike was on ebay,
and if I recall correctly the seller was an antique store in Beacon NY.
I'm from Beacon, and I remember visiting it and stopping in at that
antique store and having a discussion with the owner while the
discussion was going on. What I don't recall is whether I actually saw
the bike there, or whether I saw it only in photos.

[RBW] Riding to Rivendell

2010-05-30 Thread manueljohnacosta
Lazy day riding around with friends got to introduce them to some mix
trail riding. We decide then to Rivendell. Grant shows us earthquake
dips! Hard upper body exercise. Decided randomly to go to Bears creek
road, so Grant makes us a map. Shows us an igneous way to put the map
on our handlebars! Also got to check out Grants temporary new ride,
complete with aero bars! Believe it or not! Always a fun day at
Rivendell. I always learn something new or interesting, most of the
time it's non-bike related.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Mixtes

2010-05-30 Thread Rene Sterental
Indeed!

The story of the day and a very beautiful bike. I was at RBW on Friday
and test rode the Yves 58 and the 60. Also saw the Betty up close,
although it was the 52.

My story is I want to get a Mixte for my daughter to come and ride
with me, but I also want to be able to ride it with its upright
position, Albatross bars, etc.

With Albatross bars the 60 fit me best, but it would be too long if I
ever wanted a different handlebar. The 60 would likely be too big for
my daughter. She's 5'7" woth a PBH of 83.5.

The 58 will fit us both, and that's the one I'm going with. Between
the Betty and the Foy, I'll probably go with a Betty to avoid the
added delay of the Yves/custom paint. She'll be going back to school
by then.

The Betty in person looked much better than on the photos.

It will be interesting to see if one of the earlier ones popped up for
sale in the meantime.

Looking forward to a summer filled with S24Os with my children (well,
maybe two or three...)

Perhaps my youngest daughter will want to come as well... Perhaps even my wife!

All of those will be more driving/ biking/camping trips than hard-core
S24Os, but hey, anything is better than nothing!!! :-)

Need to change the family lifestyle!

René (the OT) ;-)

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Mixtes

2010-05-30 Thread CathyRN
I have a 56 cm Rivendell Glorius that I bought from Rivendell in 2008.
I have had MANY bikes and I currently have 4: a custom Bike Friday
Pocket Crusoe with drop bars, a Specialized Dolce WSD road bike, a
Breezer Greenway, and the Glorius. It IS Glorius, and I ride it ALL
THE TIME. My husband has a 58 cm Yves Gomez. I test rode a 52 cm Betty
Foy at RBW about a year ago when we visited the bay area and thought
that was a terrifc bike, too.

[RBW] Rodeo weight fully built

2010-05-30 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I know that we are not meant to think such dirty thoughts, but the hell with
that. The Rodeo has me wishing for a derailleur bike for the first time in
almost 8 years. So, for a 58/59 built with conventional 32 spoke wheels but
light rims; 2 X no more than 8; dt shifters; Flite saddle; 25 mm race tires;
no crabon or titanium; what could I expect such a build to come to?

What are y'all's weights for y'all's built up Rodeos, in mid-range sizes?

[RBW] Re: Rodeo weight fully built

2010-05-30 Thread dpco
patrick,
i have a 59cm roadeo built as follows: nitto pearl stem, 44 noodle
bars, record hub with velocity aerohead rims 32h.,
campy centaur ergo shifters and derailleurs, thomson seatpost, b-17ti,
116 phil bb (stainless spindle and cups), ta zephyr 50-34, look
pedals, and lastly, 700x28 grand bois tires. 21.6lbs. not superlight,
but who cares. sorry that the components are different, but it can
give you an idea. you can save some weight by going with a threadless
headset ( at least 1/2 lb.). by the way, its the best handling bike
that i have owned.

[RBW] scooter widda shock

Aero bars AND a suspension fork!

Signs of the pending apocalypse?

Cheers,
David

I scoot one-handed, and I tried resting on the grip, but I slip forward.
Mark rigged the rest for me; works great. Shocks came widda scoot. I'm
getting into this scooter thing. Don't be shocked if, a year and a half or
two (prolly not, but scooting is saving my sanity for now. I'm the old
guy with the blue cast scooting around town, in the neighborhoods.

kickbikeusa.com, I think. Not bad...mix it up (even if you don't have to)

It's ok, you can put disc brakes on it. XT hydros are highly recommended.

[RBW] Happy new AHH owner

2010-05-30 Thread maclarensf
After two years of wanting a Rivendell bicycle, I finally took the
plunge this April and spec'd out the options I wanted on my dream AAH.
This Memorial Day weekend I picked up my new 63 AHH and enjoyed my
first ride on the bike through Golden Gate Park in SF to the Pacific
Ocean. The bike rides so smooth and sturdy! Like a Mercedes Benz
sedan.

[RBW] Portland Riv Ride updated details

2010-05-30 Thread b hamon
Hi campers!
This is a reminder that Sunday, June 6, there will be an informal Riv lovers'
Ride in Portland (OR).We will use a route similar to the old Slug Velo Rose
Ride route (because it's Rose Festival time and the roses are in bloom all over
the city!).
We'll meet at noon at Peninsula Park Rose Gardens, corner of N Albina and
Ainsworth (we'll meet at the top of the stairs on Ainsworth between Albina and
Commercial sts, south end of the rose garden).
Please come gawk, admire, take photos of and RIDE your Riv'd out bikes
(Rivendell, B'Stone, and other classic steel bikes in a similar vein, shellac
optional). I had considered asking folks to bring a sack lunch but it's not
clear where'd we'd picnic. This is a ONE-WAY route ending at the Lucky Lab
Brewpub (SE 9th and Hawthorne). Please bring money for a bite to eat at the end
of the ride. Please also wear clothes, as this is in no affiliated with the
folks who bring you the World Naked Ride. Ride will take place rain or shine
(it's Portland), so make like the Girl and Boy Scouts and Be Prepared.
I am writing this the day before I perform at Folklife Festival, so if I
changed some details from the last time I mentioned this ride, I apologize. I'm
posting this from memory.
