When my wife and I were engaged in the mid-80s, she volunteered that instead of an engagement ring, she would prefer a new bicycle. Being frugal self-sufficient graduate/medical students, we ended up with a lower-end neon Specialized mountain bike that she rode for some years before putting it aside for a used XO-2. After two decades of marriage, our circumstances had changed, so for our 20th anniversary, I bought an unbuilt Glorius frame on ebay and built up the kind of bike I wish we could have afforded in 1987 (although such a bike was probably not available then). The Specialized is still in the basement for nostalgia’s sake.
