[RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?

2010-05-01 Thread Michael_S
By my crude measurements they came out at 39mm on the 22.5mm Salsa
Delgado cross rims. They are slightly wider than the Paselas. I ran
them at about 75 psi, about the same as how I ran the Paselas. They
seem to be lower in profile, I did not measure that dimension yet.

I'm going to buy some digital calipers today so I can report accurate
info in the future. The Paselas are going on my '85 Bridgestone T700
which has the same rims on it.

Post at 79-80 ish. The bars are level, and that is with a tech delux
stem. If you opt threaded stem it will be hard to get your bars the
extra inch higher without the expander being in the threaded portion
of the stem, not the best idea. A standard tech stem might give you
the length to pull this off, or go threadless.

things with the back tire. Let me tell you the sign does not lie. I
was lucky to catch it with the tread of the tire, and minimal rim
damage. Also lucky that I was less than a 1/4 mile from home and
walked back. I booted it up with a piece of cordura backpack material
and some shoe goop. It has held up for a long long time. Not my
favorite tires, but they work.

I did the same thing on a nail hole in a pasella, except I only used
duct tape; it worked fine. After all you are only trying to keep the
slit from spreading; not hold air like a tube.

[RBW] Re: cranks: ramps and pins v. none

2010-05-01 Thread Garth

Happyriding,

You can build a frame to take wider tires and have a smaller Q than
say a Bombadil, but it would likely be a full custom frame designed
with modifications to the stays. No one has made a copy of the
Stumpjumper design, but even they couldn't handle much less than 147mm
wide crank.. I doubt even a custom wide tire bike is going to take a
narrow crank like the Grand Cru without some major design
compromises.

The Riv design is not the only way to design the BB/stays, but if
you're going to make bikes you gotta decide one something, and the Riv
one works well for their intended parts. I think if we all had a frame
at home to play with made of play dough, you'd quickly realize
designing frames isn't as easy as it looks. Compromise probably rules.

[RBW] WTB: DirtDrop Bars (or equivalent) and 10 cm dirtdrop stem

Hello, folks.

Long time ibob and rbw o.b. list member here. Just happened upon a nice
1987 MB-1 that is bone stock except for missing the original bar, stem,
shifter combination.I would like to put drop bars back on the bike and
wondered if anyone had a 10 cm dirtdrop stem and/or a flared wide-ish drop
bar laying around they would like to sell or swap?

Thanks!

[RBW] WTT: Big Loafer for Little Loafer

2010-05-01 Thread Shaun Meehan
Hi all,

I'm reconfiguring my "stable" a little bit and the Atlantis is going
to become my main commuter/all-'rounder (in place of the Quickbeam,
which I sold). Oddly, for me that means I'm going to swap my Nitto Top
Rack for the Mark's Mini. Anyway, I've got a blue tweed Big Loafer
(very good condition) that I'd like to swap for a Little Loafer (any
color) that's in similar condition. Sort of a long-shot maybe but if
anyone has a Little Loafer they'd like to swap for a Big Loafer,
please contact me off-list at: meehan.sh...@gmail.com

Thanks,

I'm not quite clear on what, exactly, you are asking, but if you mean to
ask, "How does the crank determine Q more than the bb spindle length," the
answer is, "Dunno, but it certainly, most certainly do." I had Phil make me
a massively long 145 mm spindled bb assembly so that I could use a beloved
175 mm Cyclotourist crankset on a wide-stayed mountain bike. Q was 160.
That's a 145 mm spindle, folks.

OTOH, the 108 or 113 spindle and Sugino XD or whatever the hell it is stock
triple on the newly acquired Sam Hill triple has a Q of about 160; note
that: 145, 113, 160.

Difference? Not the spindles, obviously, but the "flare" of the arms. The
Cyclotourists don't flare at all; the XDs flare like any modern crank.

So: today's lesson: it's the crank arm flare, folks, that largely determines
Q, not the spindle length.

"Huge Q"? The Qs on my two remaining custom Rivs (130 and 126 spaced,
respectively ) are both 130 mm.

That on my Sugino XD'd tripled Sam Hill is 160.

Explain "huge".

My 65 mm (actual, measured with a digital caliper)-tire'd Monocog has a Q of
150. I could get 70 mm tire in that frame. Forget what cranks, but they take
that early design splined bb.

My two customs have Qs of 130; the Sam Hill has a 160 with a modern
splay-armed triple with at least 1 cm of clearance between arms and stays.

yes that is the one.

We rode within a 1/4 mile of it on the SoCal ride last month, but the

Philly or Boston, but more fun to bike around here in my opinion

[RBW] First ride

2010-05-01 Thread Anne Paulson
Today I picked up my little beauty, the green Roadeo my husband got me
for my birthday. Naturally I didn't want to coop up the new arrival
(or myself) in a car right away, so first we took a little jaunt up to
the top of Mount Diablo, its ancestral homeland. What a perfect day!
Not too hot, and plenty of orange poppies, purple lupine and yellow
mustard remain from a beautiful flower year.

The bike is splendid. Very, very comfortable; somehow, as with all
Rivendells, the body position is exactly right. Gorgeous, with tan
tape contrasting with the bright dark green paint. (I ordered a black
Barley for it from Peter Jon White, but now I think a tan bag, or the
green Barley, would look better. Oh well.) Wants to descend faster
than I want to descend. Feels perfect when I'm out of the saddle. My
friends that I ride with will be able to admire it from the rear.

I still have to do some tweaking. Riv put on Jack Browns, which are
fine tires but this bike, which is pretty much entirely for climbing
on pavement, will get narrower tires to save weight, and the Jack
Browns will go on some lesser bike. I rode today with toeclips because
I didn't want to get used to clip-in pedals on a new bike on a longish
ride, but Speedplay Frogs will go on it tonight or tomorrow. And the
elderly saddlebag currently on it will be replaced by a spanking new,
appropriately small Barley. But already it's great.

[RBW] Best Thumb Shifters

2010-05-01 Thread Johnny Alien
I need to get a set of thumb shifters. I don't want to go the route of
bar ends and thumbies as it's pretty pricey. Past that the only
option from Riv is the Sunrace kind. I actually have a new set of
Falcons lying around that are pretty much the same thing but was
wondering if there is anything great out there. Even vintage
suggestions are appreciated.

Re: [RBW] First ride

2010-05-01 Thread PATRICK MOORE
If I hadn't already spent far more than I or my riding deserve on my two 26"
wheel roads, I'd buy a Rodeo; that and a Quickbeam (now that I have the
beater/tourer 3X6 Sam Hill for groceries, touring and hill+headwind
combinations) are what I'd want. I'd want to have the Rodeo made into a
fixed gear, but, were it not for my customs that is what I'd buy and that is
what I'd do -- a gofast Rodeo fixie and a more plebian and doughty Quickbeam
fixie. Oh, and perhaps a Hunqa or Bombadil off road -- but if only they
could handle fat tires. (No, a 2" tire is not fat.)

My sentiments exactly: you ride nice bikes and you think, "I don't need a
Rivendell," but then you get on a Riv, custom or production, and there is
just a fit, feel and handling that you have to work hard at on (IME) the
best of other bikes to get close to. I've owned four, now, and despite my
natural skeptical nature, I am convinced. They are my standard.

Congratulations; please post photos. And if you want ot sell that Barley,
lmk.

[RBW] SoCal Riv May 1 Riv Ride; Photos

2010-05-01 Thread Dustin Sharp
Seven turned out for today's SoCal Riv ride, riding everything from a Roadeo
with Jack Browns, to a MTB singlespeed with 29x2.4 tires.

42 miles, 5600 feet of climbing, and about 80% of it on dirt. Temps in the
high 60s.

This was some of the best mixed-surface riding around. Paved road, dirt
road, rough fireroad, and a little single track. Some pretty steep pitches,
including one stretch of 21% grade dirt.

Re: [RBW] Re: Taking Bikes on Airplanes: A method I haven't seen before

2010-05-01 Thread cyclotourist
I've read of this technique. Basically just turn the bars sideways and roll
it in. The theory is the baggage handlers treat it much better than just
"some other box to move." Presume it's easier for TSA to check it quickly
as well. A Quickbeam would be a good idea for this.

Re: [RBW] Re: SoCal Riv May 1 Riv Ride; Photos

2010-05-01 Thread cyclotourist
This was an amazing ride. Probably the toughest I've ever been on. Lots
of climbing up front, then marvelous alpine singletrack. Lots of mud.
Terrible fires through there over the last decade, so all the big trees were
dead, but lots of new growth at the ground level.

If you notice Dustin's stats, there was about two hours of non-riding
time... I think 75% of that was his/their waiting for me. Thanks for that
by the way!!! I'm slow in general, but about 4/5 of the way into it my
knee quit working, which really sucked for me. Good Mexican food at the
end, too!

Anyway, a great time, even with the slow and the knee. Some more pics

Man, if we¹d a had a video camera, this would have been up with Jay¹s Hunq
video.

Straight out of a Riv promo ad.

[RBW] Re: SoCal Riv May 1 Riv Ride; Photos

2010-05-01 Thread Esteban
WOW! Dustin - thanks so much for planning this. This was likely the
most variety per mile I've see on on one ride - lovely empty
backroads, dirt paths, fire roads, rocky and rutted fire roads, single
track, and twisty road descents and massive climbing. We had a great
group of folks and a lot of variety in the bicycles.

I was going to bring my Neo-Moto clad Rawland until the last minute,
when I went with the Romulus with 35mm Paselas. I'm glad I did, as it
was pretty darn fun getting bounced around on some of the more intense
fire roads. That bike can take a licking.

My photos are here:

There was snow on these trails last weekend! About an hour from
downtown SD.

Re: [RBW] First ride

Congratulations Anne!

That sounds like a great ride. There's really something about those
Roadeos. Can't wait to see some images!
