[RBW] Riv TOSRV Riders

2010-04-30 Thread Dick Denning
If you live at all close to Ohio, and have been riding for awhile,
you're probably familiar with the Tour Of the Scioto River Valley
(TOSRV), http://www.tosrv.org . TOSRV starts and finishes in
Columbus, Oh., and is always on Mothers Day weekend. This year is the
49th TOSRV and will be held next weekend, the weekend of May 8th &
9th.

I usually ride with a group of riding buddies, and we have a few
Rivendells in the mix. Usually a couple of Rambouillets, a Romulus,
sometimes a Rivendell or Bleriot, etc. This year I know of one Sam
Hillborne that'll be joining us as well. I often see a couple of
other Ramb's (John) and an AHH (Mark?) too.

Just wanted to let any other RBW owners/fans know they're more than
welcome to join us on our ride to and from Portsmouth, Oh. We leave
from the SW corner of the Statehouse on Saturday morning. We aim to
gather there about 7:15AM on Saturday and try to leave by 7:30, though
we're often running 15 minutes late. A quick recreational pace gets us
to Portsmouth before 5PM.

Feel free to join us. Look for a couple of blue Rambouillets and
you'll know you've found us.

[RBW] Re: Repairing a puncture in Schwalbe Marathons

2010-04-30 Thread Michael Shaljian

I should have stated more clearly that I actually put the tube patch
over the hole from the inside of the tire. At the time (and now) it
did seem like it would be just a temporary fix. I've briefly looked
into this zap-a-gap stuff, do you just put a few drops of it in from
the inside and outside and let it set and the problem is solved?

[RBW] homemade bag loops???

2010-04-30 Thread jpp
I want to get the sackville saddlesack size medium. I do not ride a
brooks saddle, so no bag loops. I have a kevens bag now and it works
fine without the loops (keven said it would work and was right). I
contacted riv about it and they said the saddlesack would move around
more than I would probably like without the loops.

Has anyone ever homemade bag loops for a saddle?? I know VO and
others sell the hardware, but it really does not look that special,
plus I think I can make it myself for less money. I figure I would
ask the group before heading out to the hardware store. If anyone has
done it, pictures would be helpful.

Thanks!!

Re: [RBW] Riv TOSRV Riders

2010-04-30 Thread John Geiger
Another interesting tie between Riv and TOSRV, in RR42 theres an
article about June and Greg Siple and their long distance touring.
Greg started TOSRV in 1962 with just himself and one other person. The
ride peaked at about 6000 riders about two decades later and now
regularly brings in about 3000 riders each year.

We'll see you there again this year Dick.

[RBW] Re: cranks: ramps and pins v. none

2010-04-30 Thread happyriding
Hi,

Thanks for responding.

I was thinking that as the chainstays got wider, the cassette moved
outboard more, but that isn't true is it? The cassette must be in the
same place no matter how wide the chainstays are? So that meas every
crank has an ideal distance from the BB shell that perfectly lines up
its chain rings with the cassette? So for bikes with wide chain
stays, you need a crank where the crank arms are further away from the
rings so that the crank arms clear the chainstays, but the rings still
line up with the cassette?

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Riv TOSRV Riders

2010-04-30 Thread MKahrl

Dick puts on a nice display of Rivendell bikes at TOSRV Friday night
registration and the next day on the road I often get questions about
my AHH. One woman in a pace line remarked that she didn't realize fat
tired bikes could go fast. (Little did she know that it is not the
tires that make it go fast, it's that a 50 year old man is trying to
keep up with an attractive woman that makes it go fast).

There is a 1971 photo in Eugene Sloane's Complete Book of Cycling that
shows a pack of TOSRV riders climbing a hill. Of 20 bikes,10 have
upright roadster style handlebars and most of them are wearing normal
clothing. When I'm contemplating buying a new bike bit for TOSRV I
think about the thousands of riders forty years ago who didn't need
fancy bikes, shorts, lightweight this or that, to complete the 210
mile tour. They just got on their bikes and did it; and they do it on
the same roads, over the same hills and in the same weather as we do
today.

As the bike boom hit North America Greg and June Siple took their
large tour organizing expertise to a lot of new bike clubs to help
them put on a tour. I think there are still rides called TOSRV East,
TOSRV West, and TOSRV South. The NYC Five Borough ride is another
offshoot of TOSRV.

Next year will be TOSRV's 50th.

Dick, I'll be working hard to get to Tracy Park before the beer truck
closes. Adding 8 extra miles to the 105 mile route is not helping.

I like that stoker stem one. Heavy and large, but super versatile.

I'm planning on using this Nitto mount as part of an optional setup
that will enable me to run a Saddlesack Large on the front of my
Bombadil.

http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=873

The R-12 rack will mount to the threaded fork crown, and the bag loops
will wrap to the handlebar piece of the Nitto mount.

[RBW] Re: cranks: ramps and pins v. none

2010-04-30 Thread Garth

It really depends on the terrain one rides weather a HSG would work
for an individual. A 24/44/48 and a 13-32 7sp FW or even a 12-32 8sp
cassette is very versatile. I believe Robert Beckman still prefers
this drivetrain on his Sakkit Touring bikes. . . which are designed
for on and off road.

Bombadil design aside . a frame could be/has been made to take big
tires and still use HSG and lower Q cranks, at least in 26" size.
I've always been fond of the original Stumpjumpers chainstay design.

Thanks for the link. Been a long time since I saw one of those. I
wonder if there was a functional issue that stopped others from
copying or if design stayed away for aesthetic or financial reasons.

Looking forward to it! This will be an epic fire road ride. Holy

Now, if I could only decide between Romulus with 35mms or Rawland with

We'll post photos for those of you who live in other parts of the
country and can't make it!

I've talked with Mark about just that, and he said the single clamp is
totally bomber, like a handlebar clamp. It's not moving anywhere.
The only reason I'd go with the 2 is if I wanted to make 2 separate
copies of the mount. $52 for 2 clamps vs $32 for one.

Re: [RBW] Re: Repairing a puncture in Schwalbe Marathons

2010-04-30 Thread andrew hill
i've dabbed in some "liquid nails" and had good results plugging holes with
that.. the benefit of LN is that it dries and stays somewhat flexible - but you
cannot use the tire for 3-4 days while it's fully curing or it'll just crack.

you can always use the ol' dollar bill trick - wrap the tube over the hole with
a dollar.. or double it up between the tube and tire. that will hold until you
get around to replacing the tire. i've left tires "patched" like that for
months with no ill effects, though only with small punctures, not slices - e.g.
no stress edges to make the hole grow.

Re: [RBW] Re: homemade bag loops???

2010-04-30 Thread tarik saleh
Patrick,

There are boat stores in albuquerque too.Where there are rivers there
are dams. Where there are dams there are lakes. Where there are lakes,
people have boats. I bet there at least 5 boat shops in metro
albuquerque. You are conveniently located to elephant butte lake.
Hell, people even have motorboats, pontoon boats and sailboats in Los
Alamos which they drag off the mesa and over hill and dale to get to
the lakes. It cracks me up, I have a flickr set for it:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/targetsalad/sets/72157605620386005/

I think most hardware stores have small cleats, and really good ones
have big ones like in the video. They are not useful only on boats you
know.

Good luck.

[RBW] Re: homemade bag loops???

2010-04-30 Thread JL
I was wondering about this myself. It seems that Brooks is the most
popular saddle with Rivendell, an most of those models have bag
loops. I don't ride a Brooks saddle either and I want to attach my to
side rails. I want to mount a Brand V seat bag, the non-leather
Keven's bag copy. It seems ironic that the Brand V seat bag is made to
fit leather saddles. I understand it is a copy of an existing bag,
but why not have the Velcro parts sewn on with a 90 degree rotation?
If I come up with a good alternative I'll post to the list.

Pretty much. Zap-A-Gap is a "krazy-type" glue that does not need a seamless
connection. The sidewall hole was visible after removal, but the tread
pretty much self-sealed. I could make it open up by pushing from the inside
of the tire. I think I opened it up as much as possible and dripped one
drop in the middle, then put a tiny amount more on the outside.

Yep. Pretty much.

The idea is to design a bike which allows you to place the chainrings and
rear sprockets in similar relationship to the centerline of the bicycle.

AASHTA -
http://sheldonbrown.com/chainline.html

It's not so much that the chainstays were widened - the rear spacing doesn't
really change as it's specific to the gearing.

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html

A few things have led to wider crank arm "splay" - shorter chainstays, which
move the wider part of the rear triangle closer to the bottom bracket;
larger diamter (i.e aluminum) and/or square tubing found on mtb designs;
suspension designs which favor oversized or square tubing.

[RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?

2010-04-30 Thread Michael_S
Thought I'd resurrect this posting. I just got my new 38mm Racers
yesterday. Put 'em on the Hillborne and did a loop with dirt and
pavement today . For the last 3 weeks I've been riding 35mm Pasela
TG's. I feel the Racers roll better on the Pavement. I felt much
faster of course I' don't have a speedo so it's all perception.
And more supple too. They seem the same traction wise in the dirt as
the Paselas. It was money well spent as they seem like a much better
tire.. they do cost more...have to see how they wear.

[RBW] Re: cranks: ramps and pins v. none

2010-04-30 Thread happyriding
I'm confused again. I was thinking that wide chainstays require high
Q cranks. But if the drop out width is standard, is it just the way
the chain stay splays out near the BB that determines Q? Can a frame
builder make a bike with low Q yet still accept 50mm tires? If so,
why does Rivendell make all their bikes with high Q?

Thanks.

[RBW] Willamette Valley

2010-04-30 Thread Anthony Koleszar
I am stuck in Iowa for awhile...pity me..I did live in Portland
for 8yrsdoing a 400km ride in the Willamette Valley, holy cow!
I sure did do a lot of riding down there, favorite part south of
Portland, north of Salem, where all the hops is grown.

Grant's ride tomorrow sounds right up my alley, got to give the man
credit, I have pitched my 23mm tires for 32mm, what a difference in
ride and handling. Of course now I think the bike can go anywhere and
spilled yesterday in some serious gravel but that was my fault, going
where no man should have gone, before or after...

My next big thing, Atlantis.

The Q factor or tread is the measurement between crank arms when mounted -

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_q.html#qfactor

(and do follow the link through to the old GP B'stone article)

I really don't think it's accurate to say that Rivendell bicycles have high
Q.

When you begin designing bikes to clear wide tires, you have to make the
tread/Q wider. There's no way around that (other than using ovalized
chainstays or crimping them). The Bombadil and Hunqapillare are designed to
handle larger tires.

Since RBW bicycles are built with steel chainstays, they would require less
room for cranks to clear, and could use narrower Q cranks thank ones made
with aluminum, for example.

Most "modern" mtbs I've ridden have way wider tread/Q than any Rivendell
I've ridden.

2010-04-30 Thread Anthony Koleszar
COOL BEANS!!! I am a 25yr veteran of TOSRV, regular poster on the
TOSRV website, couldn't agree with you guys more about all you wrote.
I am now a big fan of Rivendell bikes, wanting an ATLANTIS really
badI will be riding a 1984 Miyata 210 touring bike I bought
for my first TOSRV, only bike I have used on TOSRV since 84.

I am currently riding a 1999 Bianchi Eros touring bike, just swapped
out the 23mm tires to 32mm, actually fit! I do hit my foot on the
tires a lot more than I did but I can handle it.as a boy, I
hit a brick wall with my bike, hit my head, bad part was it pushed the
fork really close and it taught me then how to hold my feet when doing
sharp turns..all streams of information leads to the river of
knowledge.

I will be hanging in Tracey Park, near the Civil War monument,
drinking beer, good craft beer. You will see my bike, my friend
painted my bike last year, but of course the decals were
doomed.just found new ones so you will see my Miyata
210which by the way, are of the same tubing used by Toyo until
just recently.

Will be looking for the Rivendells !
