[RBW] Re: pannier recommendations

2010-04-16 Thread emilyb
Greetings RBW group,

I've been reading through the pannier recommendations because I'm
investigating
buying my first set of panniers (for Bleriot) and I'm wanting a light
weight set. I like the
Arkel T28s but I'm thinking they may be a bit small for an 8-day trip
planned this summer.
Does anyone own the Lone Peak P-340? Size-wise they are a bit larger
than the Arkel's,
but with what looks like an extra storage area in the back so they
have more capacity. Weight
is the same as Arkel T28s, at 2.5 pounds.

Are Lone Peaks good for durability? Is the hooking on mechanism
reliable?

Thanks!

as long as we're armchairing, I'd agree with that. classic risk/
reward analysis - if he didn't think he was going to be on the podium,
why risk a broken fork and a possible injury? on the other hand,
cancellara, a favorite to win, admitted to taking a risk with his
carbon wheels, saying that you have to take risks to win. and like
Boonen said, if you give Cancellara a few meters, you'll never see him
again. think about that. it's nuts. apparently, Spartacus thinks
Zipps give him the best shot at those "few meters" - and who's going
to argue with his palmares?

[RBW] Re: Four by Four Array of bikes

2010-04-16 Thread William
I shoudl have just generically said "drop bars" for those that have
their particular flavor they like. The thing I was going for was that
almost all 16 of those bikes made sense. The Bombadil, Hunqapillar
and Atlantis all absolutely make sense with any of those handlebars.
Maybe the Hillborne with bullmoose would be the least likely combo,
but all 16 would be really useful rides. That's why I didn't include
a go-fast column, becuase 90% of us want a go-fast with drop bars. A
Roadeo with Alba bars would be goofy. But when you get right down to
it, if Mark can build up a Roadeo under 20lbs, then a 23lb Hillborne
shouldn't be hard at all.

It's a property of bicycles in general, and Rivendells in particular,
that I sometimes lose sight of. You can significantly change the
personality of a bike by changing the handlebars. Change bars and
tires and you've got a completely different bike. I've done it and
I'm sure most of you have too. The touring bike I put the most miles
on in my life was a Trek hybrid that I bought withour ever riding
becuase I looked at the frame numbers and knew that it would work for
me with the right drop bar and stem. The thing had a riser bar and
one of those pivoting adjustable stems on it stock. It was a
fantastic touring bike for me.

[RBW] Re: Commuting makes me angry...(might be a little ranty!)

2010-04-16 Thread GeorgeS
I certainly would not want to urge anyone to arm themselves unless
they are comfortable with a firearm, but if you sometimes or always
carry a gun in your car for protection, there is no reason why you
should not do so when riding a bike -unless you are going to have to
lock the bike and are not able to carry the gun with you in which case
you should not carry. I have used the small Wald basket on my
Atlantis for carrying a Glock when I know I have to go through a
particulary dangerous neighborhood. The gun can be concealed with a
bandana but still remains in easy reach.

[RBW] Re: New route for Amgen TOC-Possible Socal Ride

2010-04-16 Thread Michael_S
I think it's a fun ride. We could leave from Acton Metrolink station
and follow Angeles Forest Hiway over Mill Creek Summit down to Upper
Big Tujunga rd. Follow that to Angeles Crest Hiway and then take
Angeles Crest back to Angeles Forest. It's about 80 miles RT. With a
good amount of climbing

It's one of my favorite rides because it's in San Gabriel Mtns. There
is regular traffic on Angeles Crest but a decent shoulder and
beautiful views. ONE issue is that there are no places to get food so
you have to carry it.

I'd be happy to lead such an adventure. I live about 25 miles from the
start point.

Mike & Aaron:

I can't make the 21st but have ridden Angeles Crest, Angeles Forest,
Big Tujunga, etc. Great riding; nice steady climbs. Another
objective can be Mt Wilson and there's a loop that makes a century,
but requires a lot of time on Foothill, between Sunland and La
Canada. The Acton Metrolink as a start/end sounds interesting. Maybe
August? :).

[RBW] Re: New route for Amgen TOC-Possible Socal Ride

2010-04-16 Thread Michael_S
Thinking about it we could alternatively go south from Mill Creek
Summit and climb up Mt Gleason(~6500). There are some dirt Forest
Service roads on the back side of Gleason we could take that would
eventually take up back down to Acton. I've ridden them on a rigid MTB
and we should be fine on 35mm tires too.

Is that your Hammered Honjo'd Riv in the pickup bed? My 2003 custom is the

Wonderful photos! It struck me that this same set could cover "any
Riv ride, any year!" Add "timeless" to the description of the
Rivendell group. Looks like lux camping - chairs, grill, probably
some well stocked coolers somewhere.

[RBW] Re: New route for Amgen TOC-Possible Socal Ride

2010-04-16 Thread doug peterson
Joe:

I grew up in Glendale, just over the hill from the Rose Bowl. Earned
my first 10 speed delivering newpapers, pushing my old bike up the
hills. This was before smog controls on cars, leaded gas, and mommie
wagons had 300 hp V-8 engines. The answer is "yes", you can breathe
the air but you need to slice it first. Us LA natives like to see the
air we're breathing.

One of the plusses to the ride Mike describes is climbing above the
inversion layer, into clean(er) air.

Initially, I was in the camp that Terpstra used a steel fork because
he wanted more clearance. However, if you look at this pic, Team
Milram's CARBON fork, which apparently the rest of the team used, has
plenty of clearance for their 28mm tires:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/features/photos/roubaix-tech-cancellaras-race-winning-rig/115223

So, the speculation that Terpstra might have been concerned about the
carbon fork breaking and choose instead the steel one.

Btw, probably the reason carbon forks have "tight" clearance is
because of the whole aero thing and the need to look "*racy* - and the
belief that "racers" don't use tires fatter than 23mm wideGood
Luck!

Re: [RBW] Rivendell Weekend #1

2010-04-16 Thread James Valiensi
Hi,
That's mine. The color was selected by my wife from the Dupont Fleet Color
chart JB gave me. I didn't tell Grant & company that I changed the color, and
they freaked when the frame was delivered to RBW. They thought JB messed up.
But they were happy to charge me an extra $50 for custom color.
I got my bike in 6-months. When I ordered it they were at a slow time (after
9/11). So RBW was telling me 6-8 weeks for delivery. Then Joe Stark quit
building frames, and all his work load went to Curt, hence the increased time.
I got it Feb 03.
I've met and know several custom Rivendell owners in the LA area, each one of
them were disappointed about the wait time; I think this is why so many RBW
frames are mass produced now, and the push for customs is off.

I'm very happy with mine, and the 6-mo wait was not so bad. But I wish I got a
57cm rather than a 55cm.

Cheers!

2010-04-16 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Very nice indeed; so yours dates from between my second Joe-built (delivered
April, 1999) and my third, Curt built and delivered in March of '03.
Personally, I think my waits were worth the results, but given the nice
production frames Riv has developed over the last 10 years, were I to do it
again, I might well have opted for a couple of those instead.

[RBW] Re: New route for Amgen TOC-Possible Socal Ride

Who is talking August? Why not do it in May when the inland
temperatures are not suffocating?

I'm all for all-paved, but I'd still be up for it if it had an off-
road component as well.

2010-04-16 Thread Brad Gantt
I'm really interested in this ride. Earlier the better. Why not do two
versions? All-road in May and mixed in August. Unless we can figure a
way to add some dirt to the mix in May.

2010-04-16 Thread doug peterson
Whoaa! Guys, the "Acton in August" was a JOKE! See the little smiley
guy? Antelope Valley frame builders just set the bikes out in the sun
for 20 minutes & apply the brazing; no gas needed.  Carbon wilts;
aluminum melts.

In SoCal during July-August-September you want to make sure you can
see the ocean while riding your bike.

[RBW] Impromptu SoCal Ride for Tomorrow?

2010-04-16 Thread Joe Bartoe

Hi All,

I know this is late notice, but I've been wanting to get my 6yo son out for a
ride. I was pondering putting the Burley Piccolo on my AHH and dragging him
from our place in Capo Beach/Dana Point to the Oceanside or Carlsbad area. We
can either come back on bike or take the train back depending on the level of
whininess. I was thinking of leaving at a semi-civilized hour of 10am or so.
Anyone feel like an advenure (what my son will be calling it)?

Best,

Joe

Well, May 1 or 2 you all are invited to an epic So Cal Riv ride in
eastern San Diego

But why not schedule this ride for another weekend in May?

Sounds fun, but I'll have my feet on the ground with both kids all
weekend. I'm riding the Russian River 200K up north the next weekend,
so hopefully I'll sneak in some miles before then!

Ahh. The in terrorrem effect of what might be a shoulder holster. Of
course for this to work, you're depending on people being of a certain
age or at least old enough to have watched Hill Street Blues. My
sense is that armpit holsters have gone out of style in a favor of
plastic sheaths that slip inside the pants top or in the small of the
back. No one really cares about tradition any longer. Don't get me

Wow

That's some serious eyecandy

Highlights for me:

I love the Nobillete 650B rando
The MAP lineup
I'm feeling the Rebollado vibe

Two I don't get at all are:

That Gallus with full painted fenders and massive platform front rack
(thumbs up) withS&S couplers?(wtf?)
What's with the bloated head tube of that Rock Lobster Cross bike?
Does it have rubber bushings for suspension stuffed in there?

RE: [RBW] Re: Commuting makes me angry...(might be a little ranty!)

2010-04-16 Thread Joe Bartoe

Hmm...I can't believe this thread is still going. I only meant it as a rant.
Anyway, I was thinking about how the guy who buzzed me took off when he saw me
pull out my phone. My phone is in a holster on the strap of my backpack. When
viewed from a rearview mirror, it's hard to know just what I would be pulling
out so maybe it was a bit of deterrence. Maybe he thought I was pulling
something else out.

Joe, who has had relatively drama-free rides since that incident.

[RBW] Hilsen and tire clearance.

2010-04-16 Thread Mike
I love the tire clearance on my Hilsen. I had to take the fenders off
my Hilsen to deal with some hardware issues and decided to throw on
the Schwalbe 700x40s from my commuter bike. I was inspired by Grant's
recent post and this PDF he threw up:

http://www.rivbike.com/assets/payloads/290/original_My_bike.pdf

Something about this looks so right.

I met up with some friends doing a fleche and rode with them for the
first 15 miles or so. Climbing up to Skyline the tires felt a bit
sluggish. On the way home I dropped into Forest Park and did about 7
or 8 miles of fire roads. While they were sluggish on the road they
were perfect for the dirt. I'll be putting the Jack Browns on next
week for my last two brevets but once I'm done with those perhaps I'll
put the Marathons back on. It's nice to have a bike designed for tires
between 32 and 40. I sure wish Panaracer would do a 700x40 T-serve. A
700x40 Kojak would be nice too.

Here's a picture of my Hilsen with the Marathons:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335...@n00/4526693063/

Oh, and it was a glorious day here in Portland. It was actually warm.
I think this was probably the warmest day of the year so far.

[RBW] Re: The new panniers look beautiful.

2010-04-16 Thread doug peterson
The one piece with the carrying strap is perfect for carry on
luggage. I've taken to putting my separates in a duffel just because
they never stay together. And look at those D-rings! The tent &
sleeping pad go there. This is looking way-cool. Can't quite figure
out the attachments from the photos but I'll bet it's dirt simple &
reliable.

Yes, separates would be good for the front. There's a lot of us who
want our front weight down low.

[RBW] Re: New route for Amgen TOC-Possible Socal Ride

2010-04-16 Thread Michael_S
Sorry I dropped out for a while ... had to go to Rancho Bernardo today
to finalize daughters wedding site for next year.

Either route would be a fun ride. I can do it any weekend in May.
Early June could work too but by July the lower elevations would be
hotter than you know what. Most of the rest of the ride is above 4000
ft so it will be nice.

How about June 5th or 6th? The pavement route is very quiet except
Angeles Crest section. That section is maybe 15% of route.

[RBW] Re: Silver Hupe love

2010-04-16 Thread gregg griffith
After I gouged my Bleriot, I took a careful look at the Silver Hupe
while mounted on the bike and concluded the arms were designed too
close together around the mounting points, which makes it have a
tendency to pop off inwards when riding on bumpy roads. I took the
Hupe off, placed it in a vice, and carefully bent one of the arms
outward a small bit and voila! It fits perfectly now and never pops
off. If only I had noticed this prior to gouging my frame.

[RBW] Cantilever Brake issue on Hillborne

2010-04-16 Thread MikeC
I have a Sam Hill with Tektro CR720's. They have a brass bushing that
pivots on the canti post. There is a lot of play in the pivot due to
the bushing being larger in diameter and shorter in length than the
post, which means it can wobble back and forth and side ways. It does
not pose a problem when braking at moderate to high speed, but when
slowing to a stop at low speed, like coasting with the brakes on into
the driveway at a few MPH, the fork shutters almost uncontrollably.
This is a 60 cm SH so the cable stops is way above the brakes due to
the long headtube, but the issues is mostly slop in the pivots more so
than the issue that Leonard Zinn referred to due to th ecable stop
being way above the brakes.

Have any other SH owners run into this problem. I would imagine that
other Rivendell owners would also experience this assuming that the
same canti posts are likely used on all models. Any suggestions on how
to improve the situation, preferrably by reducing play at the pivots.
Otherwise, I really like the CR720 cantis with Kool Stop salmon pads.

Wow. That is a serious beast with those. I've been kind of toying with the
idea of "what to do next" when I finally wear out my non-JB's (forcing
myself to use them as the JB's have ruined me for most other tires.)

Kind of thought I might some bigger tires. Is the 40 about max?

I had a similar issue w/ the Sam Hillborne when I first installed the

in, I haven't noticed any vibrations and have had very minimal break
squeal.
