[RBW] Re: 8-Speed Jtek Bar End Shifter

2009-12-06 Thread JoelMatthews
You may be out of luck for the time being. J-tek was a one person
shop. The designer maker has cancer and is undergoing intensive
treatment. As one might expect, he and his loved ones have a lot more
on their minds right now than making new shifters.

It does lead me to wonder at times with all the people unemployed
these days why unique and in demand products such as those made by
Jtek and Zugster bags cannot find a way to get additional people
making product for them. Seems maybe there are not enough people with
the skills out there. Or maybe most people with the skills would
rather take a job selling or supporting someone else's product so they
can have employer insurance.

Re: [RBW] Re: 8-Speed Jtek Bar End Shifter

2009-12-06 Thread David Hallerman
That was true until recently. But in fact, one of Jay Guthrie's loved
ones, his son Ryan, is now running the business.

http://www.jtekengineering.com/

At this point, they're only selling the ShiftMate. But the website says
"Other products will be added again in time."

So I'd give Ryan a call, to see the status of the bar-end shifter.
Perhaps they have one around to sell?

Dave, who relies on the ShiftMate to build up bikes that work best for
his needs and desires

That does make perfect sense to grease the heads. I'll have to check
both soon. Good thing I'll be putting new cables on the Hilsen soon.

[RBW] Re: Silver shifter problem

2009-12-06 Thread All Rounder 2000
I began using Silvers when they first came out, & have used several
sets different bikes. I love them, but there is a consistent problem:
cable heads are too large to fit in the shifters. (I reported this
problem to Riv from the start, btw.)
To get around this problem, I file the sides of the cable "head", to
make it slightly smaller. Then the cables install and uninstall with
ease.
I have not used grease.

Is it possible to use a Shimano or Silver bar end shifter in friction

2009-12-06 Thread Sarah Gibson

ok this is only my experience
but at acme
we tried every single possible 8 speed or friction shifter
(btw-the shimano bar ends all have friction mode)
for use with internally geared hubs
with little success of quality shifting
thats why jay created the jtek barend shifter
have installed numerous ones on shimano 8 speed internal hubs with excellent
results.
im sorry to hear he's no longer producing them
theres a huge market
in kansas city area anyways
for barend style shifting
or anything remotely "road" oriented for internal hubs
at the handmade bicycle show in indianapolis in feb
we discussed this at length with the shimano guys
and they indicated that shimano was indeed researching that as an option for
shifting
tho ive not heard anything else about it since...
nevertheless
anyone who makes an internally geared hub should
in my opinion
make a quality shifter that can be used on road style bars
be they drop or moustache etc

After a long internal debate, I went with the darkest green I could
find in Keven's color catalogs. Almost black, with the cream accents.
I can't wait to see how it turned out...

using an 8spd bar end shifter with a travel agent was in vogue for a
while - it actually works great. i know a fella who's been running

[RBW] Re: 8-Speed Jtek Bar End Shifter

2009-12-06 Thread R Gonet
Thanks for the info. Shimano already makes a trigger shifter for the
Nexus and perhaps they don't see a much larger market for the bar end
shifter. If you want to use the Nexus you'll probably do so with the
shifter they already provide, even if you'd rather use a bar end
shifter. Let's hope that Shimano doesn't think like this, however.

2009-12-06 Thread JoelMatthews
Yes. T'would be nice if Shimano and Sram and Rohloff for that matter
would get to work on producing levers for their IGHs. Strumey-Archer
will offer a down tube shifter for its forthcoming fixed 3 - speed
hub. Maybe that will start something.

Curtis Inglis is trying to modify a J-Tek for use as a down tube
shifter on my forth coming Alfine equipped Retrotec. Hope it works
out, as for now, it does not appear he will be able to get another.

[RBW] Re: New Bombadil group on flickr

I've finally created a flickr account. Posted a few Bombadil photos to
the new group. Thanks, your post was a good motivation. I'm new to
this photo posting bit. Let me know if I've posted too many on the
group and I'll remove some.

[RBW] Re: 8-Speed Jtek Bar End Shifter

2009-12-06 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
"using an 8spd bar end shifter with a travel agent was in vogue for a
while - it actually works great."

It does not, in fact, work great, but some may find it adequate. We
set one up awhile back, and it shifted, but the shifts were not exact.
It could be tweaked to shift better at one end or the other of the
gear range, but there was always some compromise. Friction-mode
"seemed" fine, but I have no idea how it would work in the long run.
At minimum, I suspect it voids the hub warranty. Jay at Jtek explained
to me that Alfine/Nexus shift stops are not uniformly spaced, while
standard indexed bar-end shifter have uniform cable pull from one gear
to the next (regardless of whether you use a travel agent). At best,
the travel agent set-up hits the gear more or less correctly "on
average". Anyway, I concluded that it was a fun experiment, but that
I would never sell this set-up/kludge to a customer.

(BTW, I'm cringing at the idea of installing one of these heavy/draggy/
hard-to-fix hubs on a fine bicycle like a Rambouillet, which will
require strange cable routing, a chain tensioner, etc. I have worked
on and ridden MANY of these, and still don't fully understand the
appeal for most bikes... What the heck is wrong with modern
derailleurs?)

I think using one in wet & mucky conditions would be a pretty good set up.
I wouldn't want one as I'm always changing flats due to thorns/debris and
don't want to mess w/ an IGH. Also, IGHs seem like a cool deal for kids who
are learning to shift and/or someone learning or re-learning to ride.
Simplicity is nice!

[RBW] Help with a Sachs P5 Pentasport IGH (super-dooper cross-posting alert!)

Great potential bike for my kid, but it needs some work.
Full story is here:
http://cyclotourist.blogspot.com/2009/12/help-davey-get-this-bike-fixed.html

Basically, I need to be pointed to someone who knows their way around one of
these hubs to see if the one I have can be made to work. Directions via the
internets might get it running, but I have a feeling I'll end up having to
send it to an expert... that would have been Sheldon, but I don't know who
is next in line for IGH knowlege. Complicating things is the fact it's a
SRAM which doesn't have a whole lot of support for the IGHs here in the
States (or so I've read).

Other than needing to keep pedalling while the shift completes, what's
any more difficult about derailleur shifting than IG hub shifting? I
find brifter action confusing - but then, I seem to be the only one who
does, and I find twist grip shifters confusing, too. Triggers, bar ends
and down tube shifters all make perfect sense.

And when it comes to "simplicity" the only thing "simple" about an
internal geared hub is that it's all hidden inside the hub shell. It's
far more complex mechanically than a derailleur drive train, it's just
that you can't see it.

And when it comes to removing a wheel, either to transport the bike or
to fix a flat, derailleur wins hands down. There are no complicated
linkages to remove, and you have quick releases to allow for tool-free
opening.

Maintenance? Removing the chain's no more difficult with one or the
other, although obviously tensioning the chain correctly is harder with
an internal geared hub than a derailleur, especially if you have
vertical dropouts. Can cleaning a derailleur be all that hard?

I'd say the bottom line is, IG hubs have one advantage: you can shift
without moving the cranks.

Simplicity as in one shifter to cover a wide-range of gear ratios. A 1X9

[RBW] Romulus for sale on Minneapolis Craigslist - a little suspicious?

2009-12-06 Thread Dan Abelson
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/bik/1497663434.html

I saw this Romulus for sale on Minneapolis craigslist. It seems a bit
suspicious considering the low price and the fact the seller does not even
seem to know the size or based on his post much about bikes at all. I am
wondering if this bike is stolen.

[RBW] Re: 8-Speed Jtek Bar End Shifter

2009-12-06 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Well put, Steve. I agree.

Another big drawback with IGHs, in my experience, is that folks treat
them as if they don't require maintenance, and believe that the hubs
are somehow "sealed". They are not so much sealed as shielded - the
nasty gunk gets in, and stays in, out of sight, out of mind.. This
fall we have replaced or should have replaced the rusted solid innards
of probably half a dozen fairly new IGHs. Right now manufacturers
treat this as a warranty issue, but as these things get more popular,
and the neglect-based issues become common, it's going to start
costing real money to fix these "low maintenance" drivetrains.

Incidentally, I now have been told, directly or indirectly, by tech
support people at two IGH manufacturers, that these hubs are designed
for "cruisers and other low torque applications".

The absence of the seat post and saddle makes me wonder, too. Were they
removed to prevent theft of the saddle while the bike was locked up
somewhere? How else do you get a fully equipped bike minus seat post
and saddle?

Make sure you point out that your LBS has no source of parts for
these, or any SRAM/Sachs IGH hubs, which is why you are calling them

I have written to the person offering the Romulus. I work in Maple Grove

I have checked on both of my Romulus bikes and they are both where they

I can see the point with a retrofit of a bike designed for derailers.
On a custom with an EBB and cable routing planned, an IGH allows for a
clean look. And if the rider ultimately sours on the IGH, the EBB
allows a relatively painless switch to single speed.

If you have more than one bike - I have three - it is interesting for
some people anyway to try different approaches. Others may prefer to
have multiple variations on a theme. More power to them. I prefer
variety.

No, I had not seen this one before. Thanks for the link. The color

[RBW] Re: My Bombadil frame is at RBW!!!

2009-12-06 Thread Rene Sterental
Ray,

If all goes well, I expect to take its maiden trip next Sunday,
probably at Ft. Ord where I've been invited to go mountain biking.

Ft. Ord's trails are sandy and therefore excellent in the rainy
season. I have an all day business meeting on Saturday, and hopefully
will be building the bike in the first couple of evenings, taking it
slowly and savoring every minute!

I'll be posting photos.

[RBW] So Cal Riv ride: Chino Hills SP

2009-12-06 Thread doug peterson
This ride was posted a few weeks back while in its formative stage.
Now we're on for next Sunday, December 13. Meet at the Starbucks at
the Brea Gateway Mall at S. Brea Blvd and Imperial Hwy (NOT the Brea
Mall, a bit east of there). Bike'n'bag ogle, outrageous lies and
coffee in the 9ish range, ride at 10 AM.

Andy worked out the route and it's posted in a link on the flickr
site:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/socal_rivendell_bicycle_appreciation_society/discuss/72157622685585543/

Originally about 30 miles, it got expanded due to popular interest.
Andy assures me that the expanded route will consume all available
daylight, energy and available resources. Very few useless (i.e.,
flat & boring) miles and mostly high quality stuff.

Riv content: 2 of 3 Atlantis' we know of on OC will be attending. No
RSVP; show'n'go.

I did see a interesting solution from an LBS for drop bar IGH combo.
They put an extention on the end of the right drop and attached the
twist shifter to the extenstion so the twist shift was where a barend

[RBW] Re: New Bombadil group on flickr

2009-12-06 Thread Dave Craig
Thanks, Matt.

The Bomb is currently built up with flat bars and barends. I'll try to
post some pictures of that set-up soon.

I took a look at your QB and Bomba pictures as well - really nice
bikes. Looks like you and I caught the same virus. I bought a QB
within a year of getting the Bombadil!

Re: [RBW] Re: Help with a Sachs P5 Pentasport IGH (super-dooper cross-posting alert!)

2009-12-06 Thread cyclotourist
Telephone... what's that? I'll give that a try and try to get hold of
someone there! :-) My LBS made it quite clear they wanted nothing to do
with this. Maybe I should have told them I was interested in a Madone in
order to get back into (serious) cycling...

So far, that's a real good lead. I have had James Black (local-ish in L.A.
and runs the IGH Yahoo group) mentioned as a contact. Also there's Aaron's
Bikes in Seattle which looks like they have a good handle on this and might
be a good help. But $175 flat fee plus shipping both ways... well, it was
free, but I don't know how much I want to get put into this. Hoping that
between James and Sram I'll get a heads up as to whether I get the missing
parts and if it's a DIY job. I don't want to take the hub apart and
re-build it, but hope I can just get it going again in "good enough" shape
to make it through three kids in route to 26" bikes

Will report back!

CycloT,

I think you just need a click box, a shifter and the little aluminum
thing that bends funny if you look at it and the little red thing that
goes on top of that. I may know a guy who has some of these in the
basement. He is currently surfing the internet with his knee up in
pain...

You should be able to get the manual off the internet that should be
pretty useful.:

Let me, ih, i mean him get back with you tomorrow.

Re: [RBW] Re: Help with a Sachs P5 Pentasport IGH (super-dooper cross-posting alert!)

2009-12-06 Thread cyclotourist
O, good linkety-link, that's got it all! I need all those little
shifter parts on figure #11, page 42 (maybe 41). My emails are getting
bounced from the yahoo group, so still relying on RBW/ibob expert
opinions...

FWIW, I jacked my knee up today moving an oak tree. Ouch.

THANKS!

[RBW] Cold weather commuting clothing?

2009-12-06 Thread kent
The standard cold weather equation is a warm, wicking base layer, an
insulating layer and then a wind/waterproof shell. Even hardcore
synthetics fans would agree that wool makes a good base or mid layer,
but most would swear by GoreTex and its descendants for the outer
layer. What do you wear on top in the cold and/or wet?

Re: [RBW] Cold weather commuting clothing?

2009-12-06 Thread Bruce
I was pretty happy yesterday with cloudy, windy, and damp temps in the 30s.
Smartwool thin longsleeve base, Joneswares thick wool longsleeve jersey over
that (covers your neck too) and a Showers Pass jacket on top (thanks to a
fellow list member). The only cold part after 2 1/2 hrs of ride was one foot
(not the other interestingly) so I deduced that one shoe was laced too tightly
while the other allowed enough airspace to insulate properly (wore Costco wool
socks)

Re: [RBW] Re: 8-Speed Jtek Bar End Shifter

2009-12-06 Thread Eric Norris
I totally agree with the need for variety. I have several geared bikes,
several fixies, and now an 8-speed IGH on the Quickbeam. Each has its place.
I was hoping initially that the IGH Quickbeam would be a great randonneuring
machine ... that may not come to pass, but it's a fun experiment and will
certainly have its uses. If not, I've still got a fixed gear wheel that can go
back on in short order (the beauty of the Sturmey Archer hub is that it fits
into 120mm dropouts).

Around here it's rarely wet in the winter*, so i generally wear a wind
resistant but highly breathable top layer over wool and/or fleece,
temperature depending. I'm usually working harder in the winter, so
the goal is to stay warm enough without sweating, and let any sweat
get away before the base layer gets wet.

* raining wet, that is. Fenders are usually enough protection for
slushy days, though i'll sometimes wear rain pants over tights and
waterproof shoes for longer melty snow rides.

In the cold I find that no waterproof or windproof layer breathes
well enough. Even a one-layer nylon jacket is enough for me to end
up drenched in sweat even with only a single wool layer. GoreTex is
worse. I had a showerproofed fine yarn cotton windbreaker that was
better than any nylon I have ever used although not being remotely
cycling-cut it was like riding with a parachute. So I generally just
layer up wool. Wool T, longsleeve wool layer, various wool jerseys
and sweaters. I carry a windbreaker in case I have to stop and start
getting chilly.

If it's cold and wet, I find some other pastime because I find riding
in the cold and wet miserable. I find riding in the wet miserable,
period. I hate riding in the rain. But there are strange people who
tolerate and even like it, which accounts for why there are
bicyclists on much of the West Coast of the US or anywhere on the
British Isles. I should live in a desert, I'd be much happier. If I
do have to ride in the rain, I find that if there's little wind I
prefer a Carradice rain cape (poncho). This almost makes riding in
the rain semi-pleasant. If it's breezier I have a Showers Pass Elite
jacket from a few years ago that has lots of ventilation options and
manages to keep me somewhat less parboiled (the best I have found,
anyway). I've used this on cold dry days, too.

For really cold dry days when I feel like riding, I have a windfront
jacket with no windblocking on the back. The arms are still too
sweaty but the torso is not too bad. I usually wear this with a
single layer of wool underneath. Mine is the REI house brand which
may be made by Sugoi.

"Admirably" is the word you're looking for, and all you really need is
tire-sets.
In my ideal world, that second Quickbeam would be orange...

[RBW] Swobo Jersey for sale

2009-12-06 Thread cyclotourist
Original San Francisco production Swobo Jersey. A little thicker and a
little coarser than their current wool. That's not a bad thing by the way.
Dark maroon with an off-white/cream panel. The panel is tinted redish from
washing over time. Size is large-ish. A tight large or a baggy medium. I
find it a touch short @ 6ft, and a touch tight on my expanded mid-section.
Shoulders/chest are perfect though. No pin holes except for one on the
collar. Maybe 2mm wide, but only if you kinda' pull it and look for it.
Only negative is that there is shellac that was splattered on the front.
Note to self: don't shellac your bars while wearing fine woolen-goods.
Shellac spots are not really big or bright, but they're there and aren't
going to disappear.

Pix: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/sets/72157622818019343/

$30 shipped in CONUS. Priority given to local pick up (including the SoCal
Riv ride on the 13th!) for $25. If you think that price is lame, drop me a
line and explain why in 1,000 words. Double spaced with one inch margins,
please.
