[python-uk] London Dojo next Thursday 7th

2018-05-31 Thread Tom Viner
Hi folks,

For June's London Code Dojo, we'll be at Potato .

We'll have pizza, drinks and some fun group coding. All abilities welcome.

There'll also be the prize draw for a random O'Reilly Python book as usual.

*6:30pm Thursday 7th June 2018*

Get your tickets while they're hot:
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-python-code-dojo-season-9-episode-10-tickets-46625047773

If you need any more information, contact the team via Twitter:
@ldnpydojo  or t...@ldnpydojo.org.uk

When I say team, there's only a small number of us who take turns to write
announcement emails like this, and "cat herd" a dojo. Maybe you'd like to
have a go, and help the Dojo to keep happening.

We're also always looking for venues to host the Dojo. Do get in touch.

Look forward to seeing you next Thursday!

[python-uk] Perhaps the London Python Dojo at your office?

2019-04-24 Thread Tom Viner
Hi folks,

The London Python Dojo often has a series of venues lined up a few months
ahead. But right now we don't have any venues arranged for May, June & July.

We rely on the generosity of companies across London to offer refreshments
and space for socialising with a dose of fun coding of an evening. In
return developers get to know who you are as a company and value your
contribution to this volunteer run meetup.

Perhaps the place you work would be interested?

If so, please get in touch with us at t...@ldnpydojo.org.uk

We generally run on the first Thursday of the month, so May's Dojo could
very well be on Thurs 2nd May.

(careful clicking reply to this email, it defaults to emailing the list!)

Many thanks,

Interesting idea Dave. I heard about this method in a FLOSS podcast
( http://twit.tv/floss27 ) where Ward explains how the system evolved
from the discussions they had at the initial design stage of new projects.
But I've never really tried it.

Could be a good way to add some thought to program structure while
learning a new methodology. Assuming people think this could help -
I wasn't at the first 3 sessions so I don't know what type of planning
took place
before the first pilot started banging some code out for the twitter graph &
tic-tac-toe tasks.

Re: [python-uk] pyweek. london python code dojo pyweek team?

2010-03-09 Thread Tom Viner
Hi all,

Just to add to what Rene has said, don't be put off if you don't have in
depth experience of pygame already. I only installed it recently and have
been going through some of the online
tutorials<http://www.pygame.org/wiki/tutorials>& previous
pyweek entries <http://pyweek.org/all_games/>. For me it's great to have a
fixed deadline where I have to make time & learn something quickly, before
the challenge begins. Then the actual week of coding, the
idea<http://pyweek.org/s/rules/> being
"Must be challenging and fun" and "Will let a lot of people actually finish
a game".

There's lots of areas to contribute to: coding, testing & reviewing but
also game ideas, story boarding, music & sound effects, art working,
3d modelling(?), scriptwriting etc.

There's no minimum commitment required btw, I mean obviously you'll have to
take most of the week off work, but 5 hours of sleep per night is scheduled
into the plan so don't worry. Seriously though, we don't have a set game
idea or even a game type yet, so if any of the above sounds like fun, let us
know and come create a game in a week!

[python-uk] Details about U-Dox Django job opportunity

2011-09-19 Thread Tom Viner

Hey all,

At the London python dojo (and also at the the annual London web boat
cruise)

there were a few people asking me for details of our job position at U-Dox.

We're looking for a mid level web developer to work on exciting Django
projects like http://www.vans.com/ and http://www.crookedtongues.com/

Requirements:

* A couple of years of development experience with a web framework such
as Django, Ruby on Rails etc.

* Comfortable with Model View Controller pattern.
* Have basic skills across the client-side: you'll need to know
javascript and your padding from your margin. We use jQuery.

* Experience with Linux and Apache very useful.
* Working knowledge of source control. We use git.
* Happy to learn new skills on the job and occasionally switch languages
to do a bit of PHP or Ruby as required.

Ideally you've got a github or similar for us to peruse (or some offline
code you can show us) or else a very lengthy and detailed technical blog.

If that sounds good, do drop me an email.

Meet us, I'll be at PyConUK this weekend!

[python-uk] Come work with us on world class django websites

2011-09-24 Thread Tom Viner

Hey all,

In short, we're looking for a new django developer, someone with a
couple of years of web development experience with a web framework such
as Django, Ruby on Rails etc. We build the bulk of our projects on the
Django platform so you need to be comfortable with how web-apps are
built within the MVC pattern.

We're a creative agency with a heavy focus on digital. We build software
to fit our clients needs - be it e-commerce, marketing or a hefty amount
of data migration onto new platforms.

You need to be ok with object orientated programming - much of our code
is written to be generic from the outset and this relies on inheritance
and code reuse throughout. We push some of our code to github so you’ll
be part of a team that is getting to release for others as well as
working on high profile flagship sites such as those for Vans and
Footlocker.

You'll be part of a small, growing team with backend and frontend
developers, and you'll be required to have basic skills across the
client-side stuff too. You'll need to know javascript and your padding
from your margin.

It’s essential that you are familiar with the use of source control - if
it's not in the repo it doesn't exist as far as the build is concerned.

Our servers are typically Linux based, experience with that is useful to
have but we’ll get you up to speed on what you’ll need. We are very much
a LAMP shop. With the P standing for Python.

It's also not unknown for us to have to work with an existing library of
code so you might be doing PHP or some AS3 based Flash at times -
switching languages shouldn't scare you. You should be familiar with at
least one form of source control and use it for your own projects.

You should be keen to go and learn new things on your own - if for
example a plugin you use breaks you should either be able to fix it
yourself, know how to get around the issue or be able to work with an
alternative without impacting the project negatively.

Ideally you've got a github or similar for us to peruse or else a very
lengthy and detailed technical blog.

If that sounds good, do drop me an email.

Thanks,
Tom

Re: [python-uk] Dojo / workshop on "TDD Django with Selenium" - any interest?

2011-10-13 Thread Tom Viner
Definitely interested in this. We're expanding the testing we do at U-Dox
and adding something like Selenium to the arsenal would be a major win.

I went to a BrightonPy talk by Jim Purbrick last year and was impressed by
the comprehensive setup he had. In particular, as I recall, he had Selenium
running in a virtual machine linux desktop so it could chug through his
tests without disturbing his coding on the real desktop.

http://lanyrd.com/2010/brightonpy-october/ (slide 11 has some selenium, but
you'll need the video to explain his vm setup, worth watching)

And to be honest, that's sum total of my knowledge on these matters! Hence I
really appreciate you taking the time and effort, happy to
provide compensation in terms of the beverage of your preference Harry (this
beer sponsored by python anywhere ... DOT COM :-D )

Re: [python-uk] saturday london python dojos?

2012-01-30 Thread Tom Viner
That sounds like a plan. I'm happy to gauge interest among the
(admittedly self selecting) audience of the weekday dojo when I host
it this Thursday. The tickets booked out within 3 hrs this month so
there's clearly unmet demand.

I personally would really enjoy having a longer session to create more
ambitious solutions on a weekend dojo. Although I wouldn't be able to
attend every time.

Re: [python-uk] Game of Life / TDD ideas

2012-02-07 Thread Tom Viner
René, that's called Rest Driven Development :-) (Although that can mean "no
sleep allowed until it's done!")

I've also attended an Emily Bache TDD formal dojo as well as Harry
Percival's code-along Test-Driven-Django-Tutorial. Both were really good to
help learn a discipline I personally find it hard to get into... but really
want to!

So there's definitely room for more "I really believe in this stuff and I
think you should too" on a per-dojo, per enthusiatic-practitioner basis,
IMHO.

Re: [python-uk] London Python dojo, January: Team 4 game of life

2012-02-11 Thread Tom Viner
Thanks for the code S. For obvious reasons there seems no way to add a git
submodule that's linked to a mercurial repo! So as suggested by Tim, I've
put up a readme here:
https://github.com/ldnpydojo/game-of-life/tree/master/team4

Theoretically speaking it should be possible to auto-push the code into
github whenever bitbucket was updated, but it would require an intermediate
service following these steps:
 - team4 do an hg push to bit bucket
 - bitbucket says "Repo administrators can add a POST service to a
repository" http://goo.gl/r3Ejy
 - the intermediate web service receives the POST, and does an hg pull from
bitbucket
 - it then uses either hg-git or actual git to push those changes into to
github

I'll leave the finer points of this as an exercise for the reader ;-) as of
course that's total overkill for this situation.

gigantic dictionary?

Have you uploaded your code (and dictionary?) somewhere? We could include
it in the dojo github repo or more likely if you have you're own hosting,
just fork our readme and add a link.

from 6:30pm. We'll be meeting back at our usual location: at the offices of

(thanks Fry-IT). Coding to follow with an opportunity to win a special prize...

For the winner of the “names in a hat” tombola: a copy of Python in a Nutshell,

Luckily I do find it all hilarious, especially:

Just to confirm, in terms of grammar, you can't *still* be looking for
work, if you weren't in the first place, similarly nor can you refuse to
talk to someone *again*.

Anyway, on balance I think the reply to list default makes sense as it is.
Mistaken reply to list doesn't seem common and today can serve as a
reminder to all list subscribers to check twice who they're emailing before
clicking send.

Look forward to seeing everyone on Monday: There are still 4 tickets left,
book your place now! Cheryl? :-p

[python-uk] Peer-to-peer dojo

2013-01-08 Thread Tom Viner
Hi again everyone (except recruiters),

Well the dojo was fun last night wasn't it! The "build a peer to peer chat
network" proved interesting if a little tricky to finish in the time. And
with that in mind, I think some of the teams/dojoers would enjoy seeing if
they can get their network working. I've added team1's code as a submodule
to this dojo repo:

https://github.com/ldnpydojo/p2p-chat-task

So if any teams would like to post their achievements, email me your code
or git repo details and I'll add it to the ldnpydojo repo.

See you again next month!

[python-uk] Fwd: more maze

2013-05-12 Thread Tom Viner
I mentioned some comments to Thomas about his elegant random spanning tree
maze script and he insisted that I
post here so everyone can see the correction and
extensions
.

First there was a minor bug where the initial location wasn't included in
the seen set, that meant you could sometimes get cycles in
the supposedly acyclic graph.

[image: Inline images 1](Note loop at bottom left)

In testing this I found I needed a way repeating a certain random maze, so
I added this to the start:

seed = sys.argv[1] if sys.argv[1:2] else random.randint(0, 999)
print "Replay with python maze.py", seed
random.seed(int(seed))

which picks a random seed unless you pass one in on the command line.

Then I wanted to see how the backtracking worked, so I tried slowing down
the turtle but there was still a bit of a pause before anything was drawn.
This was because the maze was being pre-computed, then drawn afterwards.
Turning the maze algorithm into a generator fixed this.

Finally I asked Thomas how he'd test if any given maze was solvable. He
said "The spanning tree connects all nodes. There are no unconnected
subgraphs. For that reason you can pick any two points as start and end and
have a solvable maze".

At this point I realised I'd been looking at the maze drawing backwards:
he'd intended the lines the turtle draws to be the *paths*, and *everything
else* was walls.

Rather than calculating exactly where all the walls would be, to contain a
given path, I just added a background and made the turtle carve out the
path of the maze.

I also added entrances when the path hits the edge. So now we have a
familiar looking maze:

Instructions: Pick 2 opposite entrances and try to get from one to the
other.

I wonder if we could let Mike's Physical Turtle loose on this...

Thanks, Thomas.

For those wondering, last Thursday's London Python Dojo was all about
generating mazes. Most teams didn't have time to fulfil their solution's
entire potential and evidently a few people went home buzzing with ideas or
alternatives. Hence the flow of messages to the list promoting maze
solutions.

Just so you knew...

The next Dojo should be on the first Thursday of June, venue to be
announced. Keep an eye on this list and/or follow @ldnpydojo.

[python-uk] The London Python Dojo is this Thursday

2013-07-07 Thread Tom Viner
Greeting from Florence and the EuroPython conference,

As the sprint pizza boxes get cleared away, it reminds me, there's a London
dojo to announce for this Thursday!

Pizza and social coding for the win. Everyone welcome.

We've got our O'Reilly give-away book ready, it's Think Complexity
including examples in Python.

Remember, we're back at the office of Fry-IT this month.

Get your tickets here:
https://ldnpydojo.eventwax.com/london-python-code-dojo-season-4-episode-11/

[python-uk] Trip to Bletchley Park

2013-09-25 Thread Tom Viner
Hi all,

A few of us had a discussion at PyconUK about doing a trip to
Bletchley Park and the The National Museum of Computing.

Saturday, 19 Oct seemed to be the best option. Londoners could meet at
Euston Station and others could make their own way.

In terms of timing:

- Bletchley Park is open from 9.30am to 5.00pm
- The Museum of Computing is "Fully open 1-5pm; Colossus and Tunny
Galleries open all day"

So we could meet at say 10am and get the train there, potentially
using this national rail 2 for 1 offer:
http://www.daysoutguide.co.uk/bletchley-park-(1)

More info:
http://www.bletchleypark.org.uk/
http://www.tnmoc.org/

So put it in your calendar and I'll email again a week before with
specific meeting times etc.

Cheers,
Tom

Re: [python-uk] Trip to Bletchley Park

2013-10-13 Thread Tom Viner
As promised, just less than a week away, here's the details for the
Bletchley Park / National Museum of Computing trip.

Date: Saturday 19th Oct

If, like me, you're London based, then join the Pythonista Express from
Euston:

Meeting time: 9:45am
Location: Euston Station - Top of the tube
escalators<http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/90/Euston_Station_escalators_geograph-3462516-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg/800px-Euston_Station_escalators_geograph-3462516-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg>
.

We're going to get the 10:13 (Platform 8) to Bletchley, arriving 10:49.
Return tickets £15 if you book online
now<http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/timesandfares/EUS/BLY/191013/1000/dep/191013/1730/dep>
.

Now if you're making your own way to Bletchley, then go for around 11am,
and I'm sure we can meet up with you.

Give me a ring at any point if you're having trouble noticing a roving band
of programmers in the station / park. I'm on 07828 013 277.

See ya on Saturday!

Cheers,
Tom

Re: [python-uk] Interesting libraries

2014-04-24 Thread Tom Viner
As Tim hints, last month's task was based on the game show
Pointless.
The challenge being to pick the least known Python module or library that
upon demo of a team's best imagined "interesting use", gets the most votes
of "can imagine using this in the next year". One final rule: team's were
banned from picking any module that they'd used before.

So +1 on lightening talks about these lesser known but none-the-less useful
modules. At the dojo next Thursday.

Re: [python-uk] Next London Python Code Dojo - 3rd June at Hogarth in Soho

2014-07-06 Thread Tom Viner
Thanks to all who came along to Hogarth for the London Dojo last week.
Here's some more details about what we got up to:

We started with a talk by Mark Needham and Nigel Small about Neo4j and it's
Python library py2neo. They showed us some advantages of graph databases,
some cypher queries for extracting data and in his example a graph of data
about the show 24. Mark asked me to remind people of the link to the
repository for the Neo4j Python 24 Hackathon:
https://github.com/nigelsmall/24

Our main event was group coding and the task voted in was "3 letter word
game" sort of like the mastermind game, but a 3 letter dictionary word is
selected, and the only feedback you get on your guesses is just "number of
characters correct and in the right place". It was a good choice of task,
as it's simplicity allowed time for people to start thinking about making
an AI to play the game. And since we've done a better-than-normal job of
corralling the teams' efforts into a git repository this time... for your
viewing pleasure: https://github.com/ldnpydojo/3-letter-word - do bare in
mind we only had an hour, although some of us couldn't resist a little post
dojo tinkering...

August is our month off at the Dojo, but I must remind you to sign up for
the UK's Python event of the year: http://pyconuk.org/ It's proper fun and
you'll learn loads too. It's over this long weekend: 19th - 22nd September.

Finally, since I was too shy to mention it on the night: we (Hogarth) are
hiring. If you fancy working with some of the most impressive Python devs
I've met, come join us. Drop me a line for details, although beware:
hitting reply to this email doesn't do what you think it does, a lesson
certain people won't forget... ;-)

[python-uk] Announcing: London Dojo Thursday 8th, in Shoreditch

2015-01-02 Thread Tom Viner
Hi and Happy New Year everyone!

It's a fresh new year, and as the holiday season resides we have a fresh
new London Dojo for you. Something tells me everyone's glad it wasn't held
yesterday, on our traditional first Thursday of the month!

We're with our regular hosts FryIT in Shoreditch again, who we truly thank
for their ongoing support.

As usual we'll have pizza, drinks and all the group coding you can manage.

There'll also be the prize draw for a random O'Reilly Python book.

Get your tickets while they're hot - especially if you've never come
before, we welcome everyone:
https://ldnpydojo.eventwax.com/london-python-code-dojo-season-6-episode-5

If you need any more information, contact the team via Twitter:
@ldnpydojo  or via email

Look forward to seeing you all on Thursday.

[python-uk] Question from uniq dojo about fileinput

2015-01-07 Thread Tom Viner
Hi all,

So before the London dojo meets again tomorrow night I wanted to resolve a
question from last month.

The task last month was to make our own GNU uniq commands. After the dojo I
got our team's code working with the fileinput module
. This allowed the
flexibility of seamlessly reading from either stdin or taking filenames as
arguments.

With fileinput the code

can just say:
for line in fileinput.input():

and that gives you all these usages:

python uniq.py my_filename.txt other_file.txt
echo -e "hello\nhello2" | python uniq.py
python uniq.py <(python print_sleep_print.py)

With the print_sleep_print.py script

I can even see about 8Kb at a time will be buffered into uniq.py, made
unique and printed, and then more data will be passed in.

The problem came when testing this feature. I found a way to connect to
both the input and output of a subprocess running the command:

master, slave = pty.openpty()
process = Popen("python uniq.py", shell=True, stdin=PIPE, stdout=slave)
stdin_handle = process.stdin
stdout_handle = os.fdopen(master)

I then write some data in, and read data out. It all works except for one
thing: even if I close the stdin_handle the stdout_handle will just block
once I've read all the output. Full test here

.

Appreciate any insight!

Re: [python-uk] Question from uniq dojo about fileinput

2015-01-08 Thread Tom Viner
Thanks Steve, just adding os.close(slave) does the jobs. Although I do have
to catch an OSError (errno=5 Input/Output Error) when reading the first
non-existent byte.

Hi Carles and everyone,

seeing as the first Thursday in April is right up against the Easter long

April.

Look out for the ticket details around a week before that.

Cheers,

Quite right Steve. Teams may like to tidy up their code and create an issue

Hey Andrea,

no worries, just make sure you get it all complete by the next dojo... only
kidding :-).

Just to add, if teams do want to share your code you can PR onto here:

and a simulator to test and rank them".

[python-uk] [London] EuroPython Talk practice

2015-07-03 Thread Tom Viner
Hi all,

As I mentioned at the London dojo last night it would be great to have an
informal meetup to practice our EuroPython talks sometime next 10 days.

I did a similar thing with my first talk, last year, which went from
"Python unittesting libraries: a comparative overview" (people actually
fell asleep) to "PyTest v Unittest: FIGHT!" (so exciting PyConUK projectors
were broke... twice)

Also an artificial deadline would really help!

Here's a doodle to register interest and availability:
http://doodle.com/5d7k2dndmw4fhufh

Not sure of location yet. We can probably do it at Hogarth (sans catering)
or Dan Pope's house was also mentioned if it's just 3 or 4 people (not sure
if he'll cook dinner though).

Cheers,
Tom

Hi David,

A random Google makes it look like argparse is involved:
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=error%3A+unrecognized+arguments

Are you using argparse? Maybe that's enough to solve it, but if not, if you
can show us the argparse parts of your code that would be useful.

Cheers,
Tom

[python-uk] Announcing: London Dojo Thursday 3rd December

2015-11-30 Thread Tom Viner
Hi all,

Slightly later email than usual, too much mulled wine already! For the
Christmas Dojo - this Thursday - we'll be with Forward Partners, in their
office just North of Old Street.

As usual we'll have pizza, drinks and all the group coding you can manage.
Maybe a lightning talk too.

Get your tickets while they're hot - especially if you've never come
before, we really welcome everyone:
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-python-code-dojo-season-7-episode-4-tickets-19777226216

Note, as we're using eventbrite these days, if you sign up and later find
you can't attend, you can click the link in the email you get, and just hit
the cancel order button.

If you need any more information (or want to volunteer as a "cat herder" of
a dojo), contact the team via Twitter: @ldnpydojo
 or via email t...@ldnpydojo.org.uk

Look forward to seeing you all this Thursday.

[python-uk] London Dojo postponed a week

2016-05-26 Thread Tom Viner
Morning all,

Just to let South-East Englander's know: to avoid clashing with PyCon,
June's Dojo is postponed a week, to the 9th of June.

And I can reveal that Bank of America will be our hosts!

Expect ticket availability in a week.

While I'm here, two extra messages:

If you've been to a dojo before and fancy having a go at cat herding,
please drop us a line at t...@ldnpydojo.org.uk or have a word in person. As
well as organising the task picking and teams on the night, there's just a
few emails like this one to be sent. It's both a public service in that it
keeps the dojo renewed with organisers, it tops up your public speaking
skills and doesn't look bad on your CV to boot. It's not hard, we'll
provide full guidance on what's required (which isn't much), and you get to
skip the queue for tickets :-)

Secondly, if your company fancies hosting the dojo at your office, drop us
a line at t...@ldnpydojo.org.uk

Cheers,
Tom

[python-uk] London Dojo Tickets Up

2016-06-02 Thread Tom Viner
Morning all,

As I mentioned last week, the dojo is on the 2nd Thursday of the month this
time, due to PyCon. We're back at Bank of America and as usual we'll have
our blend of food, drink, chatting and coding. As well as the give away
book from O'Reilly and pub afterwards.

That's the London Python Dojo, 6:30pm Thursday 9th June at Bank Of America.
Come along, especially if you've never been before, it'll be fun:

Re: [python-uk] job postings to this list

2016-09-02 Thread Tom Viner
Potential candidates as well as recruiters are reminded that hitting reply
will result in a mail aimed back to the list.

You must then manually edit the To: field.

Furthermore: Outlook's "recall this message" will not work, rather it will
send a further email to the list, each and every time you click it.
Although perhaps third time's a charm?

You have been warned!
