Uploaded new bootstrapping patch that handles the fully explicit import 
machinery.

I also tweaked a couple of things so it plays nicely in terms of building an 
initial version with the checked in importlib.h. Specifically: pythonrun still 
calls _frozen_importlib._install and can tolerate that function returning None. 
Longer term, we'd give the two hooks different names and returning None will 
become a fatal error, but for the moment, the current behaviour makes the patch 
much easier to work with.

Order is still wrong relative to the zipimport machinery and I haven't 
benchmarked the startup time overheads.

The test is a bit too optimistic: a thread is looping for 0.2s, and the test 
checks that the process time (user + system) increased of at least 0.1s. If the 
thread is preempted, there's a high chance you won't get even as low as 0.1s.
I see two options: either increase the total running time, to make it really 
likely you'll get a chance to run (or decrase the lower threshold), or use 
times(2), and check the result against that (does Windows have such a syscall?).

Support lines in zipfile looks contradictory and buggy. This complicates the 
code and makes the behavior of zipfile.ZipExtFile incompatible with the 
interface of other file-like objects. For example, the behavior of the read, 
read1 and peek differ from one described in io module.

If we are working with binary data, conversion of newlines is meaningless (and 
how about newlines in comments?). If we are working with text, the bytes must 
be decoded to str. This will help io.TextIOWrapper.

I suggest two alternatives:

1. Deprecate universal newline support in zipfile. zipfile.ZipExtFile should 
always work with non-modified bytes, and who need the text, let wraps 
zipfile.ZipExtFile with io.TextIOWrapper.

2. Automatically wrap a zipfile.ZipExtFile with io.TextIOWrapper if universal 
newlines mode is enabled. In this case, the data type will change from bytes to 
str. Add modes "t" and "b" to explicitly specify the data type. Add an encoding 
parameter (and other parameters if needed).

It seems like the parse_constant keyword parameter for registering a callback 
function is no longer called in Python 2.7.

I have created and attached a script that shows the problem.
Output in Python 2.6:
Met an int!
Met a constant!
{u'a': None, u'b': None}

Output in Python 2.7:
Met an int!

So parse_int callback still works btw.

parse_constant has been changed as of d95e5add3ca4 to be called only on 
"-Infinity, Infinity, NaN":

``parse_constant``, if specified, will be called with one of the
following strings: -Infinity, Infinity, NaN.
This can be used to raise an exception if invalid JSON numbers
are encountered.

And indeed, if you change your example to Infinity, it gets called.

That said, neither the 2.7 nor the dev docs reflect that. So it seems like a 
documentation bug to me.

as fallbacks when openssl is not available. However, if openssl *is* available 
at build time, then these fallbacks don't get built.

It would be nice if they would get built even if openssl *was* found at build 
time:

  (1) for (perceived?) licensing issues, one might choose to run without 
linking with openssl (see 
http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2011-March/109053.html; that 
message requests that a bug be opened about this, but I wasn't able to find it?)

  (2) for "portable" builds: build onto portable or shared storage, and run on 
multiple machines, even if openssl happens not to be available on some of the 
machines.

Probably because no-one opened an issue.

Suggestion: Add an option to bin/hex/oct functions to format binary output with 
a minimum fixed width, including leading zeros.  Also might be useful for hex 
and oct.

Currently, bin(18) produces '0b10010'

with this change, something like bin(18, foo=8) would produce '0b00010010'

Ok.  I'm not sure what backwards compatibility issues would exist, though.

The only difference is that mboxrd converts
"\nFrom "  → "\n>From "
"\n>From " → "\n>>From "

making the conversion reversible, while mboxo does

"\nFrom "  → "\n>From "
"\n>From " → "\n>From " (no change)

which is ambiguous, and both get converted back to "\nFrom " when converting 
back to text, corrupting the original message.

mboxrd is essentially a bugfix for mboxo rather than a fundamentally different 
format.

[issue14626] os module: use keyword-only arguments for dir_fd and nofollow to reduce function count

Well, it always boils down to the same problem: should we offer thin wrappers 
around underlying syscalls or offer higher-level functions?
I personally think that offering mere wrappers around syscalls doesn't make 
much sense: Python is a very-high level language, and so should its library be.

Now, I'm in favor of adding optional argument to tune the behavior with regard 
to symlinks, however I'm skeptical about merging regular syscalls and *at() 
syscalls, for the following reasons:
- *at() syscalls are not portable: if it's not supported, what's 
remove(path='toto', dir_fd=fd) supposed to do? Throw an exception?
- it's not clear how one's supposed to check that the functions are available: 
right now, one can do
if hasattr(os, 'unlinkat'):
# use unlinkat()
else:
# fallback to unlink()
How would that work with dir_fd argument?
- some functions have actually really different prototypes:
for example:
rename(, ) -> renameat(, , , )
  trying to coalesce them into a single function will lead to awkward and ugly 
API: some arguments will be exclusive (which is almost always a sign of a bad 
API), and the order sounds really wrong:

stat(path, *, followlinks=True, dirfd=None)
is backwards, it should be
stat(dirfd, path, *, followlinks=True)

since, `path` is relative to `dirfd`.

Actually, the proper way to do this would be to use overloading, but Python 
doesn't support it (and even if it did, I think overloading would probably be a 
bad idea anyway).
- taking for a second the point of view of a user that has never heard of the 
*at() family, if I come across such a function:
chmod(path, mode, *, followlinks=True, dir_fd=None)
I'll probably have to think some time to understand what the hell is the last 
dir_fd argument. Renaming, removing a file is simple and direct, so should the 
API be.
- finally, although useful, the *at() family is a really poor and confusing 
API, which will likely be used by less than 0.1% of the overall Python users. 
Complicating the whole posix module API just to shave off a few functions is 
IMHO a bad idea.

"The test is a bit too optimistic: a thread is looping for 0.2s, and the test 
checks that the process time (user + system) increased of at least 0.1s. If the 
thread is preempted, there's a high chance you won't get even as low as 0.1s."

Hum, the problem is maybe that the thread is preempted, but the first problem 
is that the test considers that time.process_time() uses seconds.

I rewrote the test to make it more reliable.

So here is the deal with PyImport_ExecCodeModuleObject(): bootstrapping and 
Barry has made this a little annoying. =)

First off, PyImport_ImportFrozenModuleObject() uses 
PyImport_ExecCodeModuleObject(), so that precludes just directly importing imp 
to handle this function entirely. OK, so that means just trying to chop out the 
path manipulation stuff since that is duplicating code found in imp/importlib.

The problem, though, is that PyImport_ExecCodeModuleWithPathnames() will take 
its pathname argument and try to get a source path from it if it points to some 
.pyc file (PEP 3147 or sourceless .pyc, and if that new path exists then it is 
used instead of the given path. Unfortunately that API was introduced in Python 
3.2, so there is a backwards-compatibility issue in that one can't just rip out 
the code w/o supporting it. But those semantics are the reason the equivalent 
of imp.source_from_cache() continues to exist in Python/import.c.

I see two options here. One is to simply leave the C code in, but that has the 
drawback of duplicated Python and C code. Two is to stick in a call to 
imp.source_from_cache() between PyImport_ExecCodeModuleWithPathnames() and 
PyImport_ExecCodeModuleObject() so the former retains the semantics and the 
latter doesn't pick up the bad habit before 3.3 is released.

Ah, sorry. I think it's a reasonable enhancement request, and
furthermore the patch simplifies the setup code. 
Also, it allows us to test the _md5 (etc.) modules in non-debug mode as
well. Perhaps Gregory can tell us what he thinks.

If it's an official feature that these modules are always built, the patch is 
insufficient: it then also needs to adjust the build environment for Windows, 
and the packaging. It potentially also affects packaging for OSX and Linux.

I still think that users with special needs such as (1) and (2) in the original 
message are better served by editig Modules/Setup, as that also allows e.g. to 
make the modules truly builtin.

I don't have a problem with always compiling them.

Distro packagers should see that the stand alone versions are not distributed 
with their package that has a dependency on openssl as they'll just be a waste 
of space.  But that is up to the distro package maintainers.

[issue7677] improve error message for setup.py upload --sign without --identity

We had a look at this bug during a sprint last week.  First, it is reasonable 
to use --sign without --identity, as gpg will fall back to a default identity 
(see the description of --local-user and --default-key in the gpg man page).  
Second, it looks like you run distutils commands from a script or makefile and 
you have a bug there (the “skipped "gn"” message looks suspicious, maybe -sign 
was used instead of --sign and interpreted as -s -i gn).  Finally, even though 
we thing this is not a bug, we agreed that it would be nicer to print a message 
to make clear that distutils2 is not broken but shows the error message from 
gpg on purpose; this may be done during the next sprint.

Yes, dt is not a number of seconds in the following example:

t1=time.process_time(); (...); t2=time.process_time(); dt=t2-t1

I wrote the test to check if time.process_time() measures the total CPU of the 
process, and not the CPU time of only the current thread.

I'm tired of this PEP, so I just removed the test. I don't think that it is 
really interesting and it looks difficult to write a reliable test.
