do not create the file by yourself. /usr/lib/libXft.so.2
I am getting an error as of this morning from KDE or GNOME when starting X: relocation error: /usr/lib/libXft.so.2: undefined symbol: FT_Set_Hint_Flags I am not sure what I did to do this. I updated the Kerbos (sp?) packages yesterday and Kapital as well. Only my userid seems affected. I am able to log in as root. So, I deleted all .gnome*, .gtdk*, .kde, .metacity, .mcop*, and perhaps a few others thinking that it must have been a customization issue. It wasn't. Perhaps it is a file permissions error? Hardware change breaks RHN applet
I moved my disk from a P-III laptop to a P4 laptop. When I booted up, hardware detection went smoothly. Had to reconfigure X to set the display (which wasn't recognized) and the wireless card MAC address, but all-in-all, it was pretty easy. (Wonder how well Windows would have handled it..., nah, I don't really.) Also had to delete the old profile from RHN and register the new one. The only thing now is that the RHN applet crashes every time it attempts to check in with "SSL3_GET_SERVER_CERTIFICATE, certificate verify failed" error. Any idea how to fix that? Re: Broken gcc 3.2 in RH8.0 with glibc-2.3.2
On further investigation, it turns out that this problem is specific to C++ programs. When compiling with gcc 3.2, the linker can't find libstdc++, or has unresolved symbols for some other reason, without explicitly referring to -lstdc++ in the link step. When using gcc 2.95.3, the explicit reference to -lstdc++ isn't necessary. I will enter this in Bugzilla. Is this a bug or a "feature"? Recovering a Damaged RH 8.0 System
I am working with another person repairing a damaged RH 8.0 system. Now that we know what is wrong, how could this happen becomes an interesting question. Here is the exact scenario. This is a laptop loaded with RH 8.0 and a number of diagnostic tools. Up2date had just been run and the machine shut down. The machine was booted the next day and brought up to the login prompt, but no login was done. The machine was unplugged from external power and went to battery power and was taken to a lab. A priority situation arose and the laptop was left in this state till it's battery wore out several hours later. After recharging the battery, the machine would not boot. After digging around after booting with the CD, we found the problem was the soft links in /lib were corrupted. The link contents were corrupted differently on each link, but letters were changed. For example, on many links, the 'i' in lib was changed to a ')'. The 's' in .so was often changed to a '3'. Telling the CD to upgrade the system does no good because the check against the RPM files says nothing needs to be changed and nothing gets done. So we are going through the links and fixing them one at a time. Has anyone seen this before? Is there any automated way to recover this without wiping out the partitions? -- Robert E. Naum, So, the issue seems to be that if /lib:/usr/lib are in LD_LIBRARY_PATH then /lib/libc-2.2.4.so is used; and with them not /lib/i686/libc-2.2.4.so is used. The 686 lib is working, the other is not. Investigation is underway So since you have /lib and /usr/lib in /etc/ld.so.conf I suggest taking those out and rerunning ldconfig. And make sure /lib:/usr/lib are not part of LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Gateway 600YG2 laptop problems with video

I check the XFree86.0.log and there are no errors. Any suggestions, I am not sure if this is a Radeon problem or a problem with the LCD display. Many servers and workstations run until they can not be feasibly maintained, or there is a compelling reason to upgrade. Well, since we are discussing RH's Personal/Professional product, it goes without saying that we're not talking about systems that should be running any of their Enterprise offerings. RH 9 is for desktop usage and for development usage and for that standard web/file/app servers. These are the ones that are already used to and have been using the 4 to 6 month upgrade cycle. Systems like major database and critical production servers haven't been running RH personal/professional anyway (usually running Solaris or AIX or some such). Now that RH has an Enterprise line you will see Linux moving into this area of the data center. For small and medium size businesses there won't be much of a change with the new breakout of the OS offerings. That is why the company I work for has migrated all but two RH servers to FreeBSD. I am in the process of upgrading an application I wrote for those servers, to be more enhanced while updating it to compile on FreeBSD and RH without any errors. When finished those two machines will be migrated ino a single more robust machine running FreeBSD. My workstation will prbably be next if wine does not get fixed by RedHat Next Month. We have already replaced all our Sparc and Alpha boxes with Intel/AMD machines running FreeBSD. I was the only UNIX administrator left that is fluent in the other many flavors of *NIX/Linux platforms we once ran. Moving to FreeBSD has been an improvement over OSF/1,True64, Solaris, SCO, BSDI and all other Linux Platforms. I disagree that Solaris and AIX are better solutions, having used them and payed for them over and over again, with their often slow patch support, they were overly burdensome. We have been running FreeBSD for over 15 Months now and I am happy with the release rate of patches and easy to use software ports system. Proprietary UNIX systems often have many queer libraries and functions not reqiured for Programming with Linux or FreeBSD. I prefered programming on linux, due the more POSIXly correct libraries and functions, but FreeBSD is still better than Solaris and OSF/1 for programming. I do prefer the more 'standard' directory hiearchy of FreeBSD. It really pissed me off when RH dropped elm. My god is nothing safe, from the wrath of replacing usefull small utilities with new sophisticated {or was that siphilisticated} programs like mutt. Next thing you know pico or vi will be dropped leaving only emacs {bloat, bloat} editor. Most servers do not run on enterprise class machines and standard or proffesional Red Hat Linux was just fine. Well..not exactly. Or not really for writing scripts like I think you are talking about. Not sure what he's after either. For simple editin in the middle of a larger script, ed is a fine tool though. However, you will see similarities in some of the commands and tools like 'sed.' I think it has something to do with 'ed' commands, which vi is a frontend, or somethingSomeone with more history info can probably explain better. Why does vi keep comming up? He asked for help with ed. OK, OK, I know. vi is really a full screen verion of ex. ex and ed are line based editors (you work on one line at a time) but there are many differenceds, enough that they arent interchangable. ed only uses single letter commands, ex has long names as well. ex commands are more like vi (understandable since they are basicly the same program) than ed, so if you know vi, ex migh be better for you. ex also offers some enhancements that ed doesn't have. But if you are starting out today, and want to write some scripts, you will do yourself well to learn Perl. Learning perl is a very good idea. You can never know too many languages. Help pick the best one for a given task. can do, and you can learn Perl in about the same time as learning both sed and awk. PLUS, anything you cannot do with a Perl command, you can invoke a shell command and pull the results back into Perl to process. AND.Perl makes string parsing a piece of cake, whereas it's a NIGHTMARE doing much of it with just regular unix commands piped together. And Perl is VERY portable, and here to stay. It really depend on what he's wanting to do. The original question sounded like ed world be fine, or sed might be good to, depends on weather you need to jump aroung in the file. sed (and perl) are designed for sequential, start to finish work. ed for jumping around with random edits. -Thomas -- Psyche-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/psyche-list

RE: RH 9 - new glibc
Yeah, this baffles me too. It's not like they were close to a 9.0 release anyways, as if they were on like RH 8.7 or something and just took a small leap. They went from 8.0 to 9.0 with no intermediate steps. If this is such a huge jump and so much is going to break, then it seems mighty foolish to me... I know I won't be upgrading my RH 8.0 boxes until well into RH 9.x (assuming there is one and RH doesn't $hit on us again and jump to 10.0 after this release). RH is notorious for blundering their .0 releases, and for them to use a brang new glibc known to break things already, seems extremely dangerous to me. Am I not understanding something? Do any other distros use this new/broken glibc yet? Is there that much with this glibc that is s unbelievably awesome that we just *had* to have it in this RH version and it couldn't wait till after 8.1, 8.2, 8.5 or whatever...? > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > > On Thu, Mar 27, 2003 at 11:20:42PM -0600, Doug B wrote: > > If I understand correctly, it seems the reason to jump a > major version > > is because the new glibc breaks binary compatability. > > > > OK... that makes sense. > > > > Why then would RedHat introduce a new glibc into RH 8 that breaks > > compatabilty with some programs (wine comes to mind and apparently > > VMWare)? Glibc doesn't "break" things, just old things aren't compatible with the new glibc. It happens all the time. IT's not broken, just too new. Most the reason for the 8.0 -> 9 is the Linux threads, which are supposedly very cool, and very worth it. You just can't win, either you're too old for the people that want new stuff, or your too new for the people that want old stuff, or you don't include 8x alternatives for every app, or you include way too many alternatives for each app... *sigh* I guess it's like a judge, they know they're doing their job if _both_ sides are pissed off at the end. -- Jesse Keating RHCE MCSE http://geek.j2solutions.net Mondo DevTeam (http://www.microwerks.net/~hugo/) Was I helpful? I find that Blackstone works fine, but the Blackstone plugin does not work with either 1.4.1_01 or 1.4.1_02 from sun. I did not try to go back to 1.4.1 since you have it working. > The only difference I see is that I didn't rename the plugin. Should not make a difference if it shows up in the About Plugin? The name should not cause a hang. > Just to be sure, I tested a few applets in mozilla and they all > worked fine. I poked around here: http://javaboutique.internet.com/stats/archive.html The biggest difference is that you are using j2re1.4.1. I removed j2sdk1.4.1_02 and installed j2sdk1.4.1_01 from sun, copied the plugin over, and Mozilla still hangs (even though it is visible at About Plugins). I installed the Blackstone sdk1.4.1_01 and everything works as advertised. Evidently something happened after _00 to _01 that makes a difference. I was really surprised to find that the Blackstone plugin would not work with the Sun sdk when both were version 1.4.1_01. I expected them to be compatible. I am downloading the sun non-rpm version 1.4.1_01 sdk and will do a quick compare (when I get a chance) to see if I can find where the two builds differ. I would be so much easier if sun would just make a gcc 3.2 version available... I would like to have an rpm of the java sdk. I have been doing this on my test machine. Mozilla 1.3 is really much better than 1.3a in terms of speed. I guess I will need to do a rpm -e on the production machine and install the Blackstone version. I wish someone would provide a rpm or spec file so that the install could be recorded in the rpm database. -- Psyche-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/psyche-list

Preference Files In Use (2nd Try)
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello psyche-list, Since sharing my home directory using NFS / automount, I sometimes find the following message on the X Window screen before Gnome gets going. "Your preferences files are currently in use. (If you are logged in to this same account from another computer, the other login session is probably using your preferences files.) You can choose to continue, but be aware that other login sessions may become temporarily confused. If you are not logged in elsewhere, it should be harmless to continue." [Cancel] [Continue] So, who's holding what preferences files open, as opposed to opening the file only when needed for getting preference information or updating it with changes? How do I get them to cut it out? What "confusion" might I see in other login sessions? (So far, I've noticed none.) Since I *am* logged in elsewhere, am I doing some harm by continuing? I can copy small files (a couple dozen megabytes) onto Samba shares with either ext2 or fat32 filesystems underlying them. For a small company, meaning less than 150 people maybe. Most companies run servers on server class equipment. In mine for example is all Dell and Compaq servers costing about $1- $15000 each. Anything mission critical should run on server class hardware. We run the "Personal" version of RH though as the enterprise line is just not needed really.
