[PLUG] Need Help with Wireless configuration in Ubuntu

2007-12-18 Thread Anoop John
Hello,
I have a cousin of mine studying at Symbiosis Law School and she has
bought a new laptop on which I had installed Ubuntu 7.10. Would any of
you be kind enough to configure the wireless on the laptop for her.
What is important about this is that her's is the only Laptop on the
campus that has Linux installed and this can be the torchbearer for
many a PC with Linux on the campus. The network guys at the college do
not know how to configure wireless on Ubuntu and they know only how to
do it on windows.
I run a computer assembling store in trivandrum - www.zyxware.com and
we are actively promoting Linux in Trivandrum. She had bought the
laptop from my store and I had convinced her of the usability of Linux
and then installed Ubuntu. I had configured it for Wireless access and
the only setting remaining was to enter the ssid and password for the
campus network. However the network guys there had played with the
configuration and it is not working anymore. I had tried to
troubleshoot over the phone and could not after 2 hours of phone
calls. I would be obliged if any of you could please help her out in
this. Also if any of you know anybody in Trivandrum needing Linux
installation assistance please feel free to contact me.
Thanks
Anoop John

Hello,

Thanks for all your replies.

>if she participates on this forum (PLUG mailing list) people could

She needs to get the laptop configured to get the internet access :)

>And... just a sidenote... Maybe people who messed up the settings do
>know just how to *click click* even in windows.

I would think so too.

>'Network Manager' is very convenient for configuring and connecting to

Network manager is already installed.

>If she can come to upcoming PLUG meeting to be held on 5th Jan

Jan 5 seems to be a long way off :(

I am hoping somebody would be able to set it up for her. It is nice to
see so many people up to offer help right away and getting immediate
replies to mails.

Cheers
Anoop

Re: [PLUG] Need Help with Wireless configuration in Ubuntu

2007-12-19 Thread Anoop John
Hello,

Here is more information about the system.

Her's is a Compaq 702TU laptop. It comes with broadcom 4311 chipset.
The wireless was configured with NDISWrapper and firmware upgraded
using bcm43xx-fwcutter.

The installation process was documented here

The system was tested for both WPA and WEP access at our office.

But right now when I make her try

iwlist scanning

is giving

No Scan Results

The Network Manager applet was not showing the signal strength icon
until roaming mode was enabled for the wireless device. When roaming
mode is enabled the Network Manager applet shows "Connect to other
wireless Network" where you can enter the ssid of the network and the
encryption type and key but no IP address. There is no DHCP server in
the network. But you cannot enter static IP while in roaming mode.
Even with roaming mode enabled the scanning results are in the
negative. This is the current status.

Cheers

Re: [PLUG] Need Help with Wireless configuration in Ubuntu

2007-12-22 Thread Anoop John
Hello,
Thanks for all your help. I have - after a very long conversation over
the phone - managed to get the wireless configuration up and running.
I made her clear all existing settings from Network Manager and set
all the values once again. Then it was just a matter of restarting
Networking. However there is a small catch, she has to restart
networking everytime the system reboots. Finally I have advised her to
sign up in this list.
So once again thanks for all the responses and help

Everybody is invited. In fact we might need some help from active
luggers across different lugs to build the group initially. There are
not too many people in the group who can provide sound technical
support to the problems that are going to be posted. So, yes, if
anybody can volunteer please do help us out

Why did you say that C# is the most advanced language? What is it that
makes it better than C++? Aren't most of the differences because of
the .net framework?

Rule 0 - Never edit a configuration file before creating a back up

Now that you have made the mistake - you can (make a backup) go ahead
and empty .bashrc and add just the parameters that you require. I
don't think bashrc has any absolutely required parameters.

Good question. I am not sure if this is relevant per se in a GLUG :).
If loudness is directly proportional to passion which would be
proportional to effective discharge of responsibilities then it would
be louder the better. But at the same time it is easy to be loud
without having to take any actual effort at all and fake passion and
the efforts. So rather than judging by loudness we should look at
actual efforts. But loudness does not have to mean absence of efforts
:). I like to be loud and I like to act.

[PLUG] [X-Post] Open Mobile Workshop - invitation for speakers

2014-02-22 Thread Anoop John
Hello,

An open mobile workshop targeted at developers and students to
introduce them to open mobile platforms is planned to be held in
Trivandrum, Kerala in March.

I am interested in seeing if we can get some speakers to conduct
sessions on totally Free (Libre) mobile platforms (unencumbered by any
kind of restrictions and fully Free Software licensed) like Replicant,
or Firefox OS or any other similar platform.

If you know of developers who could take workshops on such fully open
platforms please pass on contact information to me and I can reach out
to these people. Please do note that I am not categorizing Android as
a fully open platform here (For example see -
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/02/new-android-oem-licensing-terms-leak-open-comes-with-restrictions/)

There are going to be Android workshops as part of this event and it
would be good if we can get some speakers to represent and introduce
fully open platforms.

Thanks in advance for your help in this regard.

Thanks
Anoop
