[PLUG] [Event Report] Fedora OpenStack, P.E.S. College of Engineering, Aurangabad, India, March 2, 2013

2013-03-04 Thread Shakthi Kannan
Hi,

I had organized a Fedora and OpenStack [1] workshop at P.E.S. College
of Engineering [2], Nagsen Vana, Aurangabad, Maharashtra on Saturday,
March 2, 2013.

After a formal inauguration at 1000 IST, I introduced the students to
communication guidelines, mailing list etiquette, and project
guidelines using the "i-want-2-do-project. tell-me-wat-2-do"
presentation [3]. The different Fedora sub-projects [4] to which they
can contribute to were mentioned. I showed the various free/open
source software tools available for them to learn and use. The career
options with free/open source software were also discussed. I had
asked them to write down any questions they had on the forenoon
session, so I could answer them in the afternoon session. Few of their
questions:

* If I do a project in Java, what are my career options?
* What is the difference between open source and Microsoft?
* Is Linux popular only because of security, or are there other reasons too?
* I am interested in mainframes. How should I learn?
* I am interested in a career in animation. What free/open source
software can I use?
* What are the steps to become a good software engineer?
* Can I patent a software product?

Post-lunch, I answered their queries in the Q&A session, to the best
of my knowledge. I also gave them an introduction on copyright,
trademark and patents, and mentioned that IANAL [5]. I then introduced
them to the architecture of OpenStack, explaining the individual
components, and their functionality. The OpenStack Lab Guide [6] was
provided to them to setup their own OpenStack cloud. Some of them had
brought their laptops to try it hands-on. I demonstrated the Horizon
web interface after starting the required services.

All their computer labs have been migrated to Fedora 17. Thanks to
Prof. Nitin Ujgare for working with me in organizing this workshop,
and for maintaining the Fedora labs at the Institute. Aurangabad is
around 230 km from Pune, and takes around 4 1/2 hours by road. There
are frequent bus services between Pune and Aurangabad. You can book
bus tickets at Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC)
[7] web site. There are a number of historic places to visit in and
around Aurangabad. Few photos taken during the trip are available in
my /gallery [8].

SK

[PLUG] [OT] You broadband in Pune

2013-03-04 Thread Mayuresh
Saw a big advertisements in newspapers today for 50MBPS/50GB connection
for around 2000/- pm by above ISP.

Their website doesn't seem to have this plan though.

I am actually looking for an ISP with reliable connection with no
downtime. Not so much interested in such a high speed.

Looking for feedback if someone has used this ISP.

This is one of the worst ISPs. Don't even think of going for it.(even
if they give you free of cost service)
They are technically useless. Do not understand very basics of
connectivity, ping responses, traceroutes etc.

I had a major issue with them about the connectivity on their
committed speeds and actual throughput. In daytime, ping to my website
was normal but in night time (my regular package), it was 4 times
slower. I had mail exchange with their support people that is easily
some 10-15 pages without any positive outcome from their side. This is
apart from many visits to their office.

Additionally, even after disconnection, they are not even bothered to
remove their cable and clean up the mess. And you get bonus harassment
of flooding your mobile with various SMS.

I had poor experience. I tried this for three months period (So called
hurricane pack) about 6 months back. My experiences:

1. There was supposed to be a free gift - usb drive/headphone set - for
online booking. It never came and my mails and calls remained unanswered.

2. The speed was supposed to be 12 MBPS. It never went beyond 5 MBPS.
Usually hovered around 3-3.5 MBPS. Measured on bandwidthplace.com and
speedtest.net. Complaint mails remained unanswered and calls did not provide
any help.

3. The connection stopped working two days before expiry date. I'm flooded
with reconnection mails and phones. However, There is no response to mails
and complaint calls do not yield any answers.

These are too trivial for Consumer forum :-(

The only thing in support, the connection did not fail any time during the
three month period. But, I've BSNL dataone connection for last 6/7 years and
it failed only two times during this period and the call centre directed me to
technical team and the connection was restored fairly quickly (about a day).

My experience with BSNL is good - though the speeds are limited. (My
connection is for 512 KBPS and I routinely get this speed.)

Is sure is a very tempting offer isn't it? They advertise in Mumbai
Mirror regularly. I wish they would spend the money in delighting the
customer.

Back in early 2005, the dawn of the 'broadband' era in India, YOU was
the only vendor in my neighborhood offering BB.
I seldom got the advertised speed of 256Kbps and on Sundays it was
worse than dial up speed.

I switched to MTNL @ 256Kbps when they were ready with ADSL infra for
my neighborhood.

'no downtime' (i.e. SLA with 100% up time) is a very high expectation.
You will not get that with a leased line and *definitely* *not* with
consumer grade ADSL service.

Plan for redundancy if you want 100% up time.

I have MTNL and Tata Indicom ADSL service for this reason. So far I
have been lucky that both of them have not been out of service @ same
time.

I have Tata Indicom and BSNL 3G as a backup for outage duration.

I am not sure about 100%, but Tata Indicom has been pretty smooth for me
for over a decade (from being erstwhile dishnet and then vsnl and so on).
(Some would say I was just lucky. So be it...)

Recently there have been issues of intermittent downtimes, sometimes
wiring level, sometimes at the backend level. So was thinking of
alternatives. Probably captioned one is not even worth a try.

Have been using Airtel broadband for more than 2 years now in Aundh, I
found their services reliable and speedtest.net matched advertised
speed. It's rare that their connection goes down (BSNL 3G is my backup
but it's hardly used) - they seem to be responsive and responsible
people in this business.
