you don't need 32 bit M/C. you can install 32 bit OS on 64 bit OS.
that should
do the needful.

ps: you may go for dual OS installation to save space.

Is this a "hub" or is it a "router"? The kind, for example, Linksys sells.

If it is the later, it might not allow machines to talk to each other
till you fiddle with some configuration.

[PLUG] OT: How many of you are programmers?

Kapil,
I am sure there will be enough enthusiasts.
Even if there aren't enough on the PLUG mailing list, I'm sure that we can
find people interested in Javascript and other programming languages in
other places.

Possibly, PLUG is not necessarily the right forum for this - because there
will be PLUG people who are not interested in programming languages, and
there will be PL people who are not interested in linux. I have been talking
with a few other people about creating a Programming Languages special
interest group. We could meet monthly and talk about different programming
languages, language paradigms, OO vs functional vs prototype based
programming, etc.

What do you think?

Good idea - but we could take this further and make it a computer
science/technology interest group encompassing a multitude of topics from
programming languages, operating systems, artificial intelligence, etc...

I'm not sure how successful such a group would be; would it be a useful idea
to start out within another group(like PLUG) and then form a separate forum
if there seem to be enough attendees?

My only worry is a venue - we have started using SICSR for so many events
that I sometimes wonder whether they'll get irritated and throw us out :-)

So it would be nice if we could line up another venue.

PLUG is open to all sort of programming discussions which comes under FOSS.
It seems either you have not met many/any PLUG members, not following
mailing list discussions or have a clear idea what PLUG community does.

I think sticking with PLUG here may be a good idea here. They have the venue
and a following.

Besides, one group meet a month is quite enough! :) I don't want to have to
decide between multiple interest groups when I am equally interested in all
of them.

True, PLUG is at its core a FOSS advocacy group, but I see no reason why we
can't stretch that definition, if only until the majority of the group
members find us boring and ask us to desist. :)

Sorry if what I was misleading.
What I really meant was this:

1. There are definitely people in Pune who are not interested in GNU/Linux,
but would be interested in JavaScript, other programming languages, and
computer sciences in general. Hence, it would make sense to have a separate
programming languages and/or topics in computer sciences forum that would
attract such people.

2. I'm sorry to have implied that PLUG might have some non-programmers.
Maybe all PLUG members are programmers. But I would then ask the question,
why doesn't PLUG have non-programmers? Shouldn't PLUG be trying to get
non-programmers interested in PLUG? The stated goal of PLUG is to have an
GNU/Linux community, and to promote GNU/Linux. Why would you keep out
non-programmers? Shouldn't you actually be trying to encourage
non-programmers to join PLUG?

3. I don't have a very strong opinion either way - so I don't want to
convert this into a holy war. I just voiced my opinion, and I will now try
to shut up.

IT was never stated all plug members are programmer/programmers.  PLUG
members range from simple users, programmers in different areas

As I said in my earlier mail you need to be in touch for the
activities that go in around PLUG.
Recently a Linux Awareness Program (Batch) was conducted for around 20
members of Bhagini Nivedita Bank Bank Pune. Almost all participants
were non members.

Plug has been participating/coordinating  in events like Gnunify from
since the initiation of the same.

Hi All,

>From having attended both PLUG and Pune Tech meetings, I see hands-on
developers, administrators and students working on many platforms
(Linux being their favourite) who participate actively in the PLUG
meetings. And there are folks who are entrepreneurs, application
architects, students who attend Pune Tech meetings.

However in the discussion, the focus should be on the offer Mr.
Kalsare has made - to teach Javascript and other languages. This is an
excellent idea and the PLUG is an excellent platform for technology
education since it has a participation of hands-on geeks - developers
and administrators who dive into a variety of topics all the way from
web development to the operating system.

I would urge the technology community in Pune to work together and
focus on leveraging all platforms as applicable and not descend into
bickering about what could be - such as losing a venue or losing an
audience or losing the speaker.

So I would propose more joint activities by the two organizations
where excellence in technology learning is the focus.

The PLUG as well as the Pune Tech Group both fulfill important roles
in the local technology community - so it is important for both to
work together and not fragment the community.

My two cents

Hi,

The primary motives of both the groups are very different. Any joint
activity will necessarily have to be at a personal level. PLUG, for
example, cannot participate in a series involving VB .Net.
So while individuals may be common for some or all of the parts of
such an activity, the PLUG banner will have to stay away if
proprietary technology is involved.

Hi Aditya,

I understand what PLUG's goals are :-)

My suggestion still stands - to work together on technologies of
common interest such as web technologies (most of them are
multi-platform) and interoperable technologies (such as Mono which the
PLUG has had discussions on).

Javascript to begin with. I was hoping to follow up with others - perhaps
Python, Haskell, even Common Lisp maybe? ;)

The idea I have in mind is to make regular presentations of interesting
features in various languages available in tutorial form. Javascript for
instance is so much more than what most developers take it to be.

Also bear in mind that I'll be more or less learning as I teach. As
Einstein(I think) said, "You always teach best what you most need to learn."

This is something that I have to deal with in Bangalore. We have
separate communities for Java, Python, Ruby, OpenSolaris, .NET and
Linux. Some of these communities have common members (like myself).
There are very few people who are programmers as well as
sysadmins/interested in how Linux-like systems work (e.g. apt-get
issues, etc).

We recently experimented by hosting an Android presentation at the
ilug-bengaluru meet a few weekend ago. After the meet, we discovered
that there were a very few of us who were able to understand the
programmer level nuances of that presentation. Most did enjoy the
"system" bit of it. So one lesson that I have learned is to keep
language focussed discussions separate from non-language technology
discussions.

There is other communities in Pune who enjoy discussing programming
language related topics. Some of my colleagues at Thoughtworks Pune
host language specific meets. There was a recent Ruby meetup at
Thoughtworks Pune, and there are enthusiasts on other programming
languages and related matters (such as funcitonal programming, test
driven development, etc) who often meet there. You may want to link up
with them.

Sounds good. I presume the attendees need to be proficient programmers
in at least one language?

Probably letting a couple of the tutorials happen would self-select
the interested attendees :) Proof of the pudding etc..
