Is the connection in win xp firewalled? If it is, try removing the firewall.

or, rather than the firewall on the xp side, could it just be that
linux (firewall) by default is not replying to "pings" / icmp echo
requests from xp?

what if you put the fc2 ip as the default gateway for xp? but maybe xp
can already contact fc2 its just that fc2 (or its firewall) doesnt
respond to pings by default? can you ssh into fc (before adding the
gateway ip) from xp?

[PLUG] Microsoft ad in TOI

2004-12-26 Thread Devendra Laulkar

Has anybody read Microsoft ad in today's (27th Dec)
TOI?

It is asking children to go to Microsoft's homepage
and check if their 'papa' has got an 'licensed'
version of xp. Very very slick

I wished somebody put up an advt. in tomorrows paper,
same place saying something like, "My dad uses Linux,
he is afree man" or words to that effect. Companies
like IBM can afford this.

Re: [PLUG] Help setting up postfix

2004-12-26 Thread Swapnil Nagle
The Problem :
I 've configured postfix. I could send mails from one domain to
another "but only by telneting machine x on port 25"
I couldn't send a mail not even on the same machine x using the
command mail -s 'test' guest@.

Whats the error ? Does the mail bounce ? Also, try mail -s 'test' guest
on x.

It will be funnier if the kid visits the MS homepage with
Firefox/Konquerer etc on Linux... and tried to enter whatever
information they ask... even if the server logs shows the http agent
as FF/Konq on Linux that will be good read for MS admins... 8-P

Re: [PLUG] Microsoft ad in TOI

2004-12-26 Thread Viraj Paripatyadar
Hi all,

We don't get ToI at our place & so I didn't know about it. But if
that's what the ad says, then this is sick marketing. With all the
secrecy maintained about their patches & SPs, Microsoft can readily
insert a small code in any of these & simply observe whether the
licence is valid or not as that machine connects to the Net. The point
is, it's absolutely sick dragging children into things that the
company can themselves get its hands dirtied of. And if they really
can't do it without help from children, they should stop selling
products & wind up their business.

I have lost whatever little faith I had in Microsoft as a company &
people related to it.

Regards,
Viraj

P.S.:- I wonder whether it's legal to make & release an ad such as this.

I haven't read the ad either and the part about "asking children to
check if papa has a license" is said by the OP, so I'll wait till I
get home today and see for myself how really dirty/sneaky is the ad...

But like I said... if people on Linux go and visit the URL just to
fill up their server logs with "Firefox" etc (and maybe fill up the
forms telling them they use Linux) that will be really funny, more
funny to see the expression on the face of the webmaster/admin for
that URL...!
