There's no doubt that even the accessible site is somewhat clunky especially
on the account and library links. I would suggest using your screen readers
command to list the available links and see if that helps you find the
specific links you are looking for.

Hi clifford, i did what you suggested, and although it wasn't what i was
used to, i found what i wanted. i have lost the message from the other
member who did me the favour of answering me. i found the box for search
for a book, and put in spartan gold, it came up with the answer, not
found. this was rediculous, as i have already downloaded this book from
audible. anyway, i still can't find my library. i enquired from audible
yesterday. they told me that they were working on the site, and suggested
i tried later. for what it is worth, i am sending that suggestion on to

Re: re question about audible

2013-05-09 Thread Clifford Blackwell

Brian,

What happens when you click on the Library link? What happens for me is I
need to sign into my audible account with my password and hit continue.
That in turn opens the Library, although there is a lot of material before
the Library section of the web page. Using Jaws I generally navigate to the
Library section with the insert plus enter command. I have to hit that
several times.

Once there, I find a list of my books. Depending on how things are sorted
it might be books purchased in the last 6 months or all of my books by
author whichever I've selected.

If I want to download the first book or portion of a book in the list. I
call up my "lists" command with insert plus f7 and search using the letter d
to find the download link. After the title of the book, there are lots of
rating links before getting to the download link.

Hitting enter on the Donwload link starts the download and by alt tabing, I
can navigate to a page that shows me the process of my download. Once
downloaded, if I have my device plugged into the computer, Audible Manager
starts up and transfers the book to my device. If for some reason it does
do that automatically, I navigate to the book in Audible Manager and hit alt
plus t to commence the transfer process. Once completed, I can exit each of
the now open three pages and disconnect my device.

Where in the process described above do things go wrong for you?

There is a Blind Audible listserv I think it's at
blindaudible-subscr...@yahoogroups.com At least that's where it used to be.

I'm assuming that you have both the Audible Download Manager and Audible
Manger downloaded and installed.

Let me know at what point things go badly for you and I'll see if I can
help.

Hi clifford, thanks for your attempts to help me. i have tried that, but
got nowhere. the url you gave us, the audible access one, is great. i can
find books on it, and download the details of what the book is about. i
haven't tried to by a book from there, as i don't know if it is possible,
or if it would be put in to my library. yesterday i spoke on the phone
with someone at audible. the conversation was carried out with difficulty.
not only was his voice too quiet, but also his accent was difficult to
follow. he kept on asking me if i was using a screen reader. i told him i
was, and it had worked perfectly until a few days ago. up until then, when
i went on the audible opening page, there were 128 links. one of these was
my library. now every time i go there, the number of links changes.
audible would prefer to blame my screen reader than there own software.
six weeks ago, when i had a different problem, they wanted to blame my
internet explorer. i take it, you can still reach your own library. if you
have any more suggestions, i would gladly hear them. it is a pitty they
started their improvements. . brian.

Hi!

Subject line displays the grim reality, was working away here when there
was a crackle and the smell of smoke rising from the sub-woofer of my
Altec Lansing Expressionist Ultra speaker system so that looks to be the
end of those.

I looked around for another pair but can't find them anywhere which is a
shame as this system has been the best Computer speaker system I've owned.

I then decided to do a little research, "Google Is My Friend" so I typed
"Best Computer Speakers" in and found to my amazement a web page that lets
you compare all sorts of atributes for computer speakers, size, wattage,
controls, features and so on.

From the little time I had to look at this page I found that the nearest
competitor to the Altec Lansing Expressionist Ultra speaker system seemed
to be the Harman Kardon Sound Sticks, audio specs seem the same except
that the Sound Sticks only have a low end of 44HZ instead of 40HZ for the
Expressionist Ultra speaker system, nothing to worry about then in that
area, both speakers have a top frequency of 20KHZ.

The only other annoyance about the Sound sticks was that the controls were
on the speakers themselves - volume was on 1 speaker and volume for the
sub-woofer was on the woofer -, yes an annoyance but not a critical point,
something that wouldn't turn me off buy this speaker setup.

So has anyone had any experience with the Harman Kardon Sound Sticks and
what do you think or perhaps you have another recommendation or - even
better - perhaps you know of where I can get another Altec Lansing
Expressionist Plus speaker system .

Re: My Computer Speakers Died

2013-06-23 Thread Clifford Blackwell
The satellite units are about a foot tal and two inches in diameter. They
are round with the touch controls for volume on the right hand speaker.
They appear to be two columns or sticks on your desk. They are good and
heavy with about a 3 to 4 inch cylindrical base to them.

The woofer looks quite like a small bee hive and sits on 3 or 4 small feet
that allow sound to escape from under the unit. It really should be placed
under a desk.

The design is visually appealing and they are a part of the industrial
design display at the NYC Museum of Modern Art. I believe they were
originally intended to be used with one of the early Macs.

I just read an ad/review of some new bluetooth/air play speaker/sound units
from Cambridge Audio called MINX. The review made them sound interesting.

Re: buying music

2014-01-05 Thread Clifford Blackwell
You have to downoad and install a download manager that is pretty
inaccessible. However, once installed, it's operation is automatic and you
don't need to do anything with it. It is probably preferable to have
someone sighted help wet the manager in the first place.

There is no cloud storage. You download the music in 320 kbps mp3 and it's
then yours to do with as you will. Making a backup copy is advised because

You have to downoad and install a download manager that is pretty
inaccessible. However, once
installed, it's operation is automatic and you don't need to do anything
with it. It is probably
preferable to have someone sighted help wet the manager in the first
place.

There is no cloud storage. You download the music in 320 kbps mp3 and
it's then yours to do with as
you will. Making a backup copy is advised because if you want to download

The Verge did a review of the Fire TV from a general perspective. From what
I've read, the Voice Search feature works wonderfully, but there's no

The Boice Search, for now, is limited to Amazon products i.e. not with Net

I was able to get a link to a very nice page detailing all the various Sonos
speakers and Soundbars available and thought that the Play:1 might be nice
in my kitchen on the counter.

So I'm wondering, do you need the Sonos Bridge to transmit to your Sonos
equipment such as the Play:1 or is the Play:1 like an AirPlay device which
just connects to your Wi-Fi network.

I agree with pretty much everything that Walter has written below,
Soundbars

are a very convenient option, to illustrate the point let's take my
situation where I'm using a room with a small TV, I have a surround-sound
system in the lounge but don't want that in my Den, I just want something
I

can use with my Television.

Using a Soundbar would mean very little set-up on my part to enjoy the
experience of Surround-Sound in a movie or from Channels on my Set Top
Box
etc, no need to set-up individual speakers as I did in the lounge and so
on.

It should be noted that - whatever system you used with your Television
these days - would improve the sound quality of your TV, the speakers in
those TV sets now are even worse than 2 tins, 1 on each end of a piece of
string.

There are several reasons for the bad audio quality, the most obvious
being
that Television sets these days are getting to the point of being as
thick
as a piece of cardboard thus good sound would really be defying the laws
of

physics.

On 10 May 2014, at 8:22 am, Walter Ramage wrote:

Hi Tom. It is like most things in life, you get what you pay for. If
a soundbar at $150 improves the sound quality from your TV then I

If you have your hi-fi in your living room where you have the TV then
feeding the TV through the Hi-fi will greatly improve the sound quality.
I
think it should be noted here that Soundbars are designed to give a
particular cinematic sound and in my opinion if it is for listening to
music seriously then a good hi-fi is the better option. If though it
is to use with your TV or DVD then a soundbar is a good investment.
If you are going to spend a lot of money then you would be wise to
audition the soundbar first by visiting a reputable dealer. There are
soundbars to suit every pocket the sound quality will generally match
the price. Walter.

Freedom Scientific sent out a news release today stating that they will
be distributing the PlexTalk Pocket. Unfortunately, in this news release,
they claim the PlexTalk Pocket is the only one that has Wi-Fi, the only
one

that is a portable DAISY recorder and the only one that has an accessible
level meter. They seem to have conveniently forgotten about the Book Port
Plus from the American Printing House, which also has these features.
While
the Book Port Plus is built on the same hardware as the PlexTalk Pocket,
it

is using firmware written by APH and is sold under a different brand name.
FS should be able to recognize another company's brand name; they have
defended theirs often enough.

I don't know if APH will challenge these claims by FS, but hopefully,
potential customers will learn all of the facts before they make a
purchase.

Which program are you using to rip the CD's? I assume you're using the
same program on both computers, and ditto for the other settings? I
suppose the hardware, CD reader, device driver, ..., and even processor
might make a difference, so ripping at the slowest possible rate and
giving the CD ripping program the highest priority setting might help.
Also, what differences is the person saying they are noticing? I doubt I
know enough to answer your question, but I would think these would be

Which program are you using to rip the CD's? I assume you're using the
same program on both computers, and ditto for the other settings? I
suppose the hardware, CD reader, device driver, ..., and even processor
might make a difference, so ripping at the slowest possible rate and
giving the CD ripping program the highest priority setting might help.
Also, what differences is the person saying they are noticing? I doubt I
know enough to answer your question, but I would think these would be
important pieces of information.

I used the check for upgrade and it said that there is a newer version out

It is version 4.6.
So where do I go to get this version with out having to install of the

I guess my question is witch is the best site for me to go and get this

Who told you to hold both volume controls down? I've never heard of this

I'm not saying your wrong.

Up till now I've controlled my iPod from the unit itself.

Audio Mode, but nothing happened.

I then went to the web site and installed the JawBone Updater. This
program opens the update page, and I found that the free NVDA screen
reader seemed to work a little better than either JFW or Window-Eyes on
this page. After updating, Live Audio was impressive for its ability to
spread the stereo effect from such a small speaker. Of course, for Live
Audio to work properly, you must sit directly in front of the speaker at
the optimum distance.

Okay well a couple of points I'd like to comment on.

I know various people around the world who have them and who have tested

Yep, it would appear to be a challenge for a blind person to use it
would seem, the people I know have sight so they've used it and all
report that no updates are available at this time.

I take your point about bluetooth devices but you certainly do not need
a bluetooth device on hand to use one of these things, as I said they
have a line-in socket thus make a truly marvelous portable speaker
system, I plug a very nice Denon tuner into mine for example.

My guess is that it is saying "Key Lock" not delock. The key lock switch is
on the side with the volume. Slide it away from the volume to unlock the

it's the disk variety, I don't know how to unlock the key lock.

If we're talking the Plextalk Pocket and the Key lock isn't engaged. Slide
the lock into locked position and then hold down the "on" key for 10 seconds
until you hear it beep at you. Return th key lock to the unlocked position

I don't know Roxio since about version 6. As I recal, back then, when you
select the rip function, you have several controls that you can tab through
before starting the rip. One of those controls was for the format and
quality, i.e. .wma at various bit rates, .wav, or .mp3 at various bit
rates.See if you can find such a control. Also check in the menus for
option settings and see if there is such a menu.

To check and see what bit rate the track was ripped at, highlight the ripped
track, right click on it and up arrow once to Properties. Control tab to
the Summary tab and tab or arrow down through the various options until you
find the bit rate. In the Summary tab you'll wat to make sure that the
Advanced option is checked/activated.

If you can describe the process you go through as you rip a disk, it might
help us to figure out where in the process selection of the rip format and
quality is located.

Good luck.

I don't know Roxio since about version 6. As I recal,

back then, when

you select the rip function, you have several controls

that you can

tab through before starting the rip.
One of those controls was for the format and quality, i.e.
.wma at various bit rates, .wav, or .mp3 at various bit

rates.See if

you can find such a control. Also check in the menus for

option

settings and see if there is such a menu.

To check and see what bit rate the track was ripped at,

highlight the

ripped track, right click on it and up arrow once to

Properties.

Control tab to the Summary tab and tab or arrow down

through the

various options until you find the bit rate. In the

Summary tab

you'll wat to make sure that the Advanced option is

checked/activated.

If you can describe the process you go through as you rip

a disk, it

might help us to figure out where in the process selection

of the rip

format and quality is located.

Good luck.

Depends on where you purchase them from. I'd suggest checking out the
terms and conditions of the site where you're purchasing your books,
Audible in this case. Does Audible allow you to burn their books to a CD
or copy them to an MP3 player? I'm not sure about Audible's terms and
conditions or how they enforce their DRM strategy, but I would assume
you can still listen to your Audible books even after you leave Audible.
You'd still be bound by the terms and conditions that you agreed to when
you bought the books though. I'm not exactly sure what you're objecting
to though, since I don't see the message you're replying to below.

It's been a long time since I've used Audible, and I don't think I have
the books I bought from Audbile around any more. I guess I should
probably check that Windows system where I put them, but I'm sure those
books are up on BARD by now. I've used Overdrive.com though, but that's
a bit different. I never purchased a book from Overdrive.com, I was just
borrowing them, and I obviously had to agree to get rid of any copies
I'd made when the lending period was over.

Re: ripping my collection: advantages of eAC vs mainstream rippers

2012-02-21 Thread Clifford Blackwell
There is a bit of a learning curve with Eac and I've never been willing to
put the time into it. I rip to 320 kbps using Real player and Express Rip
from NCH and am very happy with the results. Express Rip is sometimes a bit
clunky especially in the looking up of track info.

I rip to MP3, and I use something less than a 320K bit rate, so I don't
think you're insane, but it depends on what you'll be doing with these
ripped files. For my part, I'm not an audiophile and I'm not going to be
playing these on a high fidelity system, so I make some allowances for
speed and convenience.

If I had the ears that I had when I was younger, and I had the time and
the space, then I'd be considering EAC and FLAC myself.

IMHO, you're not insane for going with what makes sense for your
situation.

Hi Brett,

I used exact audio copy to rip my cd collection, comprising around 1000
discs to flac. To date I haven't encountered any tracks with audible
artefacts, even those which eac reported as having possible errors.

Eac seems to be generally regarded as the most accurate ripping tool
around.
By utilising both secure mode, and the accurate rip facility, I reckon
you
can be pretty sure if eac reports no errors you have a perfect copy.

The process of ripping even a collection of a few hundred discs can be
time
consuming, so it pays to get it right first time.

With this in mind, I personally feel it's well worth taking the time to
learn and configure exact audio copy.

Cheers,

Tim.

Using text-to-speech technology, the updated box is easier to navigate for

The DTR-HD500 with the new text-to-speech software pre-installed can be

Subject: Itunes download?

Hi everyone,
I'd like to download the (Windows) version of Itunes on my computer.
However, when I go to the Apple site, there doesn't appear to be a link
to download the software anywhere. How do I download Itunes? and what
do the terms 64-bit Windows and 32-bit Windows mean? I've herd these
terms being tossed around on the GW Info mailing list from time to
time, and all I can gather, is that these terms have something to do
with Windows. I have absolutely no clue as to what this jargon means.
On the Apple site, there's a link called Itunes 64-bit installer, but
I'm not sure if this is the version I'm supposed to download, and I
don't want to run the risk of downloading something only to find out
later, that it doesn't work with my version of Windows. Any ideas?

Mike

Re: Evening out the loud and soft songs

2012-07-19 Thread Clifford Blackwell
I don't know anything about iTunes, but I think I remember someone saying
that there was a normalize setting though I don't know if it's just for
playback or for permanent level.

If the files are in .mp3, you might search out a program called mp3 gain.
There's a slight learning curve to the program, but it does an excellent job
of making a permanent file that is well equalized as to level.

Hi Folks, I have made a playlist in iTunes from many different CDS.
Naturally, some are much louder than others.

I am using the latest blindTunes and iTunes and Jaws, can anyone tell me
how to proseed after having made the list and then celected all the songs?
Do I look for an Equalizer or Levelor?

Once this is done, will I be able to hear all of them at the same volume,
or will this not happen until I burn them on to a blank CD?

Any help will be gratefully receved! Vicky

Thanks, Clifford, for your response.

I have a string of 30 mp3 files that I'm trying to burn onto a CD for the
car. I've done this acouple times before, so I know it can work. Most of
the files seem OK and are added to the burn list. Some, seemingly random,
get the error message. So I have replaced the files that are in error with
other copies of the same recording and it usually is OK. So I'm wondering
what is wrong with the bad files? They play (using winamp) just fine.
Still would like to know what error 15 meant. There's a contact link on the
burnaware website; so maybe that's my next step.

They won't work directly into your mixer. They're designed to plug either

Sorry about the delay in answering your question. You would use the f3
and f4 commands to mark where you want to make cuts. You mark the
beginning of where you want to cut, then use your navigation commands to
go forward to the end of where you want to cut, and press f4, then delete.
You can, btw, decide which commands you wish to use for navigating
through the video under the navigation tab in the prefferences under
tools. For instance, You can move one minute at a time with
control+right or left arrow, every ten seconds with shift+ctrl+right or
left arrow, and so forth.

I really enjoy using my small Jambox. Recently, I inadvertently let the

that reinstalling the software from the web site will resolve this

increasing volume with MP3 Direct Cut

2005-11-09 Thread Clifford Blackwell
I have an mp3 file twhose sound level is too low. I have mp3 Direct Cut
and it seems I should be able to use the gain control to increase the
volume of the file. However, I don't seem to be able to do it.

I've listened to Rob's excellent tutorial, but this control is not
covered. I suppose I could normalize the file and then normalize it
again to get the increase I want, but that doesn't seem correct.

Any suggestions on how to use this program to increase the file
volume?

open mp3 direct cut
open the sound file
press ctrl+A to select all
press ctrl+G for gain
press alt+L to lock scroll bars
shift+tab twice
press up arrow to let sound level up or down arrow to decrease
press alt+O for OK button.
now press spacebar to play file

accomplish much of what it does with Real 10.5 either the free or

If you should use the Real Player option for transferring files to your
minidisc recorder, the program will perform the conversion.

Do you have any ideas how will I use my Mini disk and transfer my MP3
to my

Re: Sonic Stage

2005-12-05 Thread Clifford Blackwell
Roden,

Sorry for the gap in responses. This is my work email and I was gone
for the weekend.

You can get the Real Player at:

www.real.com

either the free basic player or the one time cost premium player will
work.

I think that Open MG Jukebox is loaded with Sonic Stage, but if not,
you should be able to get a copy through the support pages at:

http://www.sonystyle.com/vaio

Once you get both of these installed, you need to attached and have
your player recognised. That's done throught the "Add device" item in
the Tools menu in Real Player.

After you have your device configured and recognised, you can load
music onto your minidisc player.

Let me know if you need additional help.

media center computers

2005-04-21 Thread Clifford Blackwell
How accessible are the systems described in the article below? I can
see lots of benefits, but have doubts about accessibility.

With a PC's Power, That's Entertainment
By TIM GNATEK

ersonal computers increasingly fill home entertainment needs. And why
not? They are already the repositories for digital photos, music and
video collections. With an attached TV or radio tuner and digital video
recorder and encoder, they can replace nearly every entertainment device
in the house.

But the demands placed on machines to store large video files and
process them quickly can be too much for standard home computers.

To fill the need, a new breed of multimedia systems is entering the
market. Not only can they record, store and manage music, movies and
television shows, but they can also showcase them on high-definition
screens and in surround-sound audio, all with a click of the remote.

Most multimedia machines come with powerful Pentium or Athlon
processors, the latest graphics cards, FM radio and television tuners
(sometimes more than one, so users can watch one channel while recording
another), DVD recorders and enough memory and hard-drive space to store
and play back hours of high-quality programming. Many also incorporate
the Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system, which
adds specialized multimedia features to Windows XP.

Because the entertainment PC's are designed for living rooms, they come
with wireless keyboards, mice and hand-held remotes for controlling
functions far from the computer. Nearly every major computer maker is
now producing entertainment PC's as laptops and desktops, and even as
horizontally designed machines that resemble stereo components.

For the Desktop

One line of desktops, the Vaio RA series of digital studio PC's from
Sony (starting at $1,799), presents bulked-up computers in tall, black
cases that enclose Intel Pentium 4 processors, one gigabyte of
random-access memory, and at least 320 gigabytes of storage. A 5.1
surround-sound speaker system comes with the packages, providing
cinematic audio entertainment. To keep unwanted noise to a minimum, the
computers use a liquid cooling system, rather than a standard fan, to
carry heat away from the processors.

Though the media computers can be priced higher than average machines,
shoppers do not have to wait for less expensive models to come to
market. This month, Gateway began selling a $1,000 media computer, the
832GM Media Center PC, which includes a Pentium 4 processor, a gigabyte
of memory, a 250-gigabyte hard drive, TV and FM tuners, a DVD+/- RW
drive, a speaker package, a wireless keyboard, two-button mouse and
remote.

Laptops

Multimedia machines also come as laptops, and their thin profile may be
preferable in small apartments or dorm rooms, or for users who prefer
the small footprint of a portable device.

One such computer, the Toshiba Qosmio, balances the portability of a
laptop with the features one might expect from its larger cousins. Its
premier model, the G15 ($2,599), has a 17-inch TruBrite liquid-crystal
display, which offers a clear picture from peripheral angles as well as
head-on. Built-in Harmon Kardon speakers mimic surround sound to lend a
richer tone than is usually found in laptops. To get to the
entertainment faster, CD's, DVD's and television programming can start
in a powered-down mode without booting the whole operating system.

>From Dell, the Inspiron XPS Gen 2 ($2,349 with promotional discount),
intended more as a portable gaming station, has a similar 17-inch
display and, like the Qosmio, provides quick access to media content
when the computer is shut down. It is also the first laptop to come with
the new, powerful NVIDIA 256MB GeForce Go 6800 Ultra graphics card,
capable of processing feats like playing one high-definition program on
the laptop screen while simultaneously showing another on an external
monitor. For the Living Room

Hewlett-Packard was an early purveyor of computers running Windows
Media Center when it was released in 2002. Today, in addition to desktop
and laptop models, it markets a system designed for the living room.

The HP z545 digital entertainment center ($1,799 with rebate at
hpshopping.com) features a horizontal brushed-black aluminum case that
more resembles a stereo component than a PC. The system comes with a
wireless keyboard and integrated trackball. For storage, the computer
houses a 200-gigabyte internal hard drive as well as a 160-gigabyte
removable drive, an ATI Radeon X300 graphics card, a built-in FM tuner,
dual television tuners and 512 megabytes of RAM, expandable to 2
gigabytes. Users can even take their entertainment with them by
transferring media files onto an HP iPAQ rx3115 Mobile Media Companion
($349 at hpshopping.com), a hand-held for carrying photos, music and
video.

A similar unit from Alienware, the DHS5 ($1,758), is also aimed at the
digital living room. The slim computer comes with an AMD Athlon 64 3000+
processor,

Re: Roxio5 and CD image files

2005-05-24 Thread Clifford Blackwell
Here's how to do it in version 4.2. Maybe this will work for your
friend. This is from the jfwlite.com site.

Preparation:
1. Close all files running in the "systems tray" that you do not need,
especially "virus checkers".
2. Create a new folder on your hard drive, if you don't know how see
below.
3. Start your "windows explorer" program.
4. You will be positioned on the line just below the "c" hard drive
line.
Hit "alt+f" and enter on the first item. Hit enter on "folder" which is
the
first item. You will be in a edit field enter the name of the folder
you
wish to create (I used "cdmusic") and hit enter.
5. Return to the desktop.

Begin create CD procedure.
1. Do not put a blank CD into your CD writer until instructed.
2. Hit "insert+f11" (system tray) and arrow down to "adaptec create cd"
and
hit enter.
3. The first item will be "audio sub menu" hit enter.
4. The first item on the next screen will be "audio cd" hit enter on
it.
5. This will bring up a screen "Untitled easy Cd creator" and you will
be
positioned on the "c" drive, in the tree view, right arrow to open.
6. Arrow down to "program files" (I type "pro" and it goes there)
right
arrow to open.
7. Arrow down to "napster" (I type "n" to get there) right arrow to
open.
8. Arrow down to "music" (I type "m" to get there) and hit tab to open
the
list.
9. Arrow down to the first title you wish to select and hit the space
bar to
select, now you may hold down the control key and arrow down to the
next
title you wish to select and hit space bar to select. I wanted all 21
titles in my "music" folder, so I hit "ctrl+a" to select all.
10. Hit "alt+e" (for edit) and arrow down to "add selected" (you may
hit "s"
to go directly).
11. Tab, this will bring up a edit field "cd title" (this is an
optional
entery).
12. Tab again this will bring up "Artist name" (this is optional).
13. Tab again this will put you in "cd layout", here titles will be
arranged
alphabetically by artist then by title, you can cut and paste your
titles so
as to arrange the order you want the songs on your CD.
14. Now that you have your music arranged in the order you would like
it to
appear on the CD, hit "alt+f" (for file), arrow down to "create CD
image"
and hit enter. This will bring up a edit box for "file name", put in
your
path and file name, (I used "c:\cdmusic\various").
15. Tab, this puts you in "file type", this is OK as is, proceed to the
next
step.
16. Tab, this places you on the "save" button, hit enter.
17. Now the "create CD image" has began, wait a couple minutes then
route
your "jaws to PC cursor", arrow up 3 lines, (I set my screen echo to
none),
here you can follow the progress of the image creation. When the
creation
phase is completed you will be positioned on the "OK", hit enter.
18. You are now returned to the "untitled Easy CD" menu screen.
19. You are now ready to burn the CD from the image, place a blank CD
in the
CD writer and close the drawer.
20. Hit "alt+F" (for file) arrow down to "Create CD from CD image" and
hit
enter, you will be in a edit box for "file name", type in the path and
file
name you created in the previous phase (I used "c:\cdmusic\various",
this
will open the file and begin creating the CD. With your "jaws" cursor
you
can follow the progress, this will not take as long as the previous
phase.
When this phase is completed you will have to locate the "OK" and left
click
on it to begin to close the process.

creating mp3/data files in Easy CD Creater 5

2005-05-24 Thread Clifford Blackwell
I want to transfer a number of albums that I have on my hard drive to
disk and maintain them in separate folders for each album. I am using
Easy CD Creater 5 though I could use 6. When I try to transfer the
folder, the files are listed without being retained in their folders. I

2005-05-31 Thread Clifford Blackwell
In Real player, if you click on the Burn/Transfer button, you'll get a pretty
good "How to..." opiton in the nemus.

In the File menu there is an option for Real Player to find all the music files
on your computer. It doesn't move them, but creates links to them from within
Real Player.

If you want to navigate to the files in your My Music folder in the burning
process, click on the Browse button when selecting from where you want the
files.

I see. Thanks. Still, I guess you have to read some instructions in Real
Player to learn how to direct the Library where to look on your hard drive
for its music files, so that you can then use the burn function, and so
forth. Under which topic in the Help documentation is this instruction
found? Is that how you learned to use the Library when instructed to (for
burning, for example)? By reading Help instructions?

thanks.

The My library option is simply a way of organizing the media files on your
pc in to groups. What I have done is to tell Realplayer where to search for
media files and every so often my library is updated. This would mean that
if I put more music files on the pc with whatever program I could find them
easily by using the my library function. It's a cataloging function for
media files.

Subject: Very basic Real Player/burning question (was Burning with
RealPlayer)

Pardon me for asking a really elementary question here. But I tried to
explore both Windows Media Player and Real Player to see if I could take
advantage of their capability to burn a music CD from .mp3 tracks stored in
the subfolders of my c:\my music folder. Which is where you select such
files from if you're using a stand-alone program such as CDRWIN, Premier CD
Creator and others.

Well, I couldn't understand how you're supposed to use the Library for this,
in Real Player, for instance. What's the Library? Is it a special storage
area for audio files that you have to set up specially in Real Player, and
which doesn't correlate at all to your audio files on your hard drive in
c:\My Music? Is it sort of inextricably connected with things like building
playlists and such, which I haven't learned to do in either one of these
players, nor in Winamp, which I think has similar capabilities?

thanks. As I said, I know this is a really basic questing, so I'm hoping
for a clear, end-user level of explanation, not trying to get into complex
technical details or anything like that.

In other words, if I wanted to use Real Player as the way to burn CDs, would
I have to learn all about the Library, and create special files there, and
so forth, in order to do this? it's all sort of self-continued, rather than
just getting music files off your hard drive?

thanks a lot,
Daniel

Yes. Just make sure your library is set up right before you do this. Hit
the alt-v key and choose burn-transfer. When you pick it you can choose
what you want from your library and tell it that you want to burn a cd(do
that first) and click burn cd. Oh, you need to tell it what kind of cd.

seconds between tracks, cross fade between tracks or leave
no blank space at all. Make the choice you want using the arrow keys.

15. Just tab threw the other controls making your selections as you wish and
then tab to and press Ok.

16. If you use a rewritable CD, "erase CD" will be within the burn window.
Otherwise, you may want to tab over to "driver options". Press enter on it.

17. Now, From this point you can make your driver use what is called "track at
once" (known as Tao) burning or "disk at Once" (Dao burning) Disk at Once,
which is the default in RealOnePlayer burns the disk in a single session and
then finalizes the disk and then, depending upon whether you've set it up,
ejects the disk after each burn. With in this window, you can also select the
burn speed you wish. Note that burn speeds are dependent upon drive burning
speed as well as the burn speed allowed by the disk in the burner. Selecting
"fastest available" will always choose the fastest burn speed with out your
having to select a burn speed manually. Make all the choices you want here and
press "ok".

18. Now, after pressing Ok, You may want to check using your JAWS cursor to
see your file list view. All your files should be selected, and, the phrase
"ready to burn" should appear by each one.

19. Now, at long last, tab to and press enter on "burn CD".

You will notice, to your delight, that a progress bar will show you the
percent of each file which has been burned on to disk and which files are still
pending. When done. Enjoy your disk.

Ok. Now for the process of how to burn CD's using a RealOnePlayer play
list. Don't worry, the steps are shorter for this one. That's because we're
working with a play list this time.

1. Open RealOnePlayer in the normal way.

2. Press alt V for "View".

3. Press L for "my library".

4. Now, arrow to the play list you wish to burn. Do not press enter here.

5. Now, tab to "copy to". Press enter on this.

6. This would be a good time to insert the blank disk.

7. Again, wait for about 30 seconds or so for detection.

8. Now, up arrow once only. Note that JAWS won't say anything when you do
this.

9. Now, Press enter.

10. When you here, "media window", press enter. You will notice that JAWS
does not lose focus when you do this.

11. You will again find yourself in a window where you can select files.
However, sense you all ready have chosen to burn a play list, just tab to and
press enter on "close this window".

12. Now, burn your CD by tabbing to "burn CD" as before and pressing enter on
it.

Note that the CD burning feature of RealOnePlayer is a premium feature
which comes with the paid for version and this feature is not available to
users of the free version of this program.

Hope that helps.

Hi all,

As promised, I have returned with instructions on burning CD's using
RealOnePlayer.

First, before you even open RealOnePlayer, there is a hot key conflict
which must be resolved between JAWS and RealOnePlayer. This hot key
conflict is in reference to two control plus keys; specifically, ctrl up
arrow and ctrl down arrow. Those of you us who use RealOnePlayer will
doubtless recognize these hot keys as the quick access keys for volume up
and volume down. The difficulty which arises from leaving these hot keys as
they are assigned is that they cause interference with the non contiguous
file selection process. In RealOnePlayer, when you wish to burn a disk from
files not part of a play list, the non contiguous file selection is the best
rule to apply rather than contiguous selection. This is because it is
possible to get feedback on whether or not a file has been selected for
burning while using the non contiguous selection method. To resolve this
hot key conflict between JAWS and RealOnePlayer, do this.

1. Open the default JFW key board manager.

2. Press R till you hear, "RealOnePlayer".

3. Now, arrow down till you get to the hot keys mentioned above.

4. Now, to change tthe first hot key, press ctrl H.

5. At this point, press the new hot key you wish to have assigned to the
function.

6. Now, tab to and press Ok.

7. You will be asked if you wish to confirm whether you wish to make this
change. Yes is the default so press enter here.

8. Now, press alt S to save this change and then press alt F 4 to exit.

At this point, you are ready to begin your burning session. Let's deal
first with burning CD's from files you select which are not part of a
RealOnePlayer play list.

1. Open RealOnePlayer in the normal manner.

2. Press alt T for Tools.

3. Press B for "burn CD.

4. At this point, you will notice that, for some reason, JAWS will tend to
lose focus from this window. Because of this, you will find that it is
necessary to use alt tab to get back t

Which steps are those, that you say I outlined.

Indeed, RealPlayer tries so hard to be an "all-in-one" media player that
it's user interfaces are more confusing than they need to be. And, many of
its functions are entirely video-related, and so not of much interest to
most blind folks. But I never found that to be a major drawback. Its major
drawback is how sluggishly JAWS responds in the Realplayer environment, and
how many of its functions require the use of the JAWS cursor, since a
keystroke alternative is not provided.

As I mentioned to Donna, I've been trying out various CD ripping and
burning programs to find the one that's most screen reader accessible
and
user friendly for me, and sells for the lowest possible price for what
it
offers.

I think I'm down to these two, at the moment. I wonder if people might
like
to chime in.

Do either of these two programs also enable data disc creation, say,
for
making backups of files? I have a demo copy of Easy CD Extractor, and
it
doesn't seem to. Does Easy CD/DVD creator do data disks? For the
five-buck
difference (Easy CDDVD Creator version 6, where still available, is
$20.95
compared to Easy CD Extractor's $24.95.)

Is one interface meaningfully more simple and navigable with Jaws?

Does either one have better written and better designed help
documentation
than the other? Easy CD Extractor's help files aren't bad at all,
though I
do wonder why they recommend ripping on the fly, contrary to what Kevin
says
convincingly is good practice).

Is either more reliable than the other in basic usage?

Does either have better or more preferences you can set?

Are upgrades free for the Roxio product, as they are for Easy CD
Extractor?

Thanks. Any other useful comments will be appreciated, too. I just
can't
think of what else to ask. And I can't demo a copy of the Roxio
product,so
this is the only way to find out anything about it without buying it
first.

thanks a lot.

2005-06-03 Thread Clifford Blackwell
Hello Dana,

Did you try "add Tracks" under the File Menu? There are also Preferences under
My Library in the View Menu.

In the Preferences under My Library you should be able to change the columns
for your library contents.

If all you want is for added tracks to go into the artist folders instead of
creating a new folder, does shutting down Real Player and turning it back on
have this effect?

How do I sort the tracks in RealPlayer's My Library? The tracks I initially
imported into My Library were sorted by Artist, and by track title within
each artist. But I've added a few tracks since then, and the newer tracks
have all gone to the bottom of the list.

I've looked in all the likely places for a sort command, but can't fine one.

Thanks.

Do you want to manually sort? I think the options may sort automatically. If
you want a manual sort, I think you're out of luck unless you creatively rename
tracks.

I'll have to take a closer look over the weekend. If you want/need to

I don't see any options in either of those places that will allow me to sort

not understanding what a particular option is supposed to do?

Re: stopping real player 10.5 from grabbing all audio types and lettingwinamp play mp3s and wav and real

2005-06-06 Thread Clifford Blackwell
Nick,

While in Real Player, go to Tools and then to Preferences. Once you
open the Tools menu, Preferences should be up one item with the arrow
key.

Arrow down to Media Types and then tab for the list of file types.
Make sure the one's you do not want Real Player to play are unchecked.
I think there is an item at the end of the list about what to do when
new types are encoutered.

tab back around to the folder list and arrow down to the Automatic
Service items. Make sure that check for new item on start up (or
something like that) is unchecked.

tab to OK and hit enter and that should set up things to play the way
you want them to.

The list of item folder in the Preference menu does not read well in
JFW so you may need to tab and back tab to refocus on each item.

Good luck.

Rick,

I don't know if the Real Player and the Music Store associated with it
use essentially the same interface as Rapsody or not. I've had good

Tracks bought through the Real Music Store are in the .rax format. You
should have no trouble playing.

Let me know if you find the interfaces to be similar. With a couple of
others on this list, I've done some experimenting and have a couple of
different approaches to suggest.

the Rhapsody client. Maybe Real Audio will recognize the format and

I think on the Roxio.com site in the support area, you can find a list
of supported cd recorders.

Hi Shannon,

I can only supply half the information for your Cliff's Notes review.
I can
tell you one vendor I've learned about that still sells the program,
even
though it's been supplanted by a new version that Roxio now calls
*Media*
Creator.

and that's at staples.com, the office supply company. They have a
search
function on their site, so you just type something like Roxio Easy
CD/DVD
into the edit box, press the Go or Search Now button, and you'll find
it.
It's only $29.95, which is a hole lot cheaper than the new version, and

you'll find as much familiarity with it and discussion of it online as
for
any of the similar programs you've seen mentioned. Plenty of people to
talk
to about how to use it.

I don't know how to find out whether your CD-ROM drive is appropriate
with
Easy CD/DVD Creator. Hopefully someone else here can fill you in. I
don't
think it's a big, esoteric challenge, but others can help you figure
this
out.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

I'm not Daniel, but here's what I understand. The interface for Easy
Media Creater changed from version 6. It makes the menus very difficult
if not impossible to read with JFW. I don't know how well or not it may

not enough to make it difficult.

2005-06-10 Thread Clifford Blackwell
Rick,

I don't have any particular tips or tricks to suggest. In the PC-Audio
archives, there is a good message summarizing how to burn with Real
Player. If you can't dig it out, I'd be happy to see if I can find my
copy and send it to you.

Are you starting from within Real Player or selecting tracks through
Windows Explorer or the Desktop and then right clicking on them? The
second way, I think reduces time spent in the admittedly ugly interface
by a step or two.

Thanks, I was finally able to burn the tracks through Real Player.
Any
tricks to making the interface a little nicer?

Tracks bought through the Real Music Store are in the .rax format.
You
should have no trouble playing.

Let me know if you find the interfaces to be similar. With a couple
of
others on this list, I've done some experimenting and have a couple of
different approaches to suggest.

Thanks, maybe I'll try Real Player. The song I purchased was
downloaded to
my computer with a .rax extension and nothing else seems to play it
except
the Rhapsody client. Maybe Real Audio will recognize the format and
allow
me to burn it to cd.

Rick,

I don't know if the Real Player and the Music Store associated with it
use
essentially the same interface as Rapsody or not. I've had good luck
in
downloading and buring music purchased through the Music Store at
Real.com

Also, Emusic.com is a breeze though the selection of music is a bit
odd.

Can anyone recommend an accessible music download service? I tried
Rhapsody, and although the radio stream is very useable as well as
purchasing and playing songs, the interface to burn or transfer your
purchased music to cd or a portable player is terrible. I couldn't
burn a
song I purchased to cd without sighted help, and I do consider myself
a
power user. Has anyone tried some of the other services like Itunes.
If
anyone has been successful at using Rhapsody to actually burn or
transfer
music, I'm all ears. Thanks.

Re: comparing Easy CD Extractor vs. Easy CD/DVD Creator v. 6

2005-06-13 Thread Clifford Blackwell
Could be. I'm an old dog and I use that with which I'm familiar. I had
trouble with earlier Nero versions so I stayed with Easy CD Creater.
Now the Roxio seems to care less and less about accessibility, I may
give Nero a try if my needs dictate.

Hi Clifford. Someone said that Nero 6.6 is the most accessible for the

blind of all the Nero versions.

Re: Blank CD/R recommendations, please

2005-06-13 Thread Clifford Blackwell
Daniel,

I think most main stream brands should work well. You don't
necessarily have to buy those formulated especially for music. Any old
data cd will work if you're creating from the computer..

I've used, TDK, Memorex, Fuji, Imation, Sony and many others.

You may want to decide if you want a spindle (without jewle cases) or a
stack with jewel cases, either thin or regular. If you get a spindle,
be aware that often the first and last disk are often a clear plastic
one for protection of the disks and does not record. It can freak one
out.

The next question will be, how to do cd covers or track listings? If
you get any good tips, let us all know. I haven't found a program with
which I am comfortable yet.

I've begun creating CDs for friends by both copying my own music CDS
and
also by creating compilations from music files on my hard drive. While

learning, I've used a few blank CD/Rs graciously donated by a friend.
Now
I'd like to get myself a modest supply to keep on hand, and I'd love to
hear
recommendations. I just did a search on Amazon and realize that there
are a
lot of brands to choose from, in different quantities, with or without
jewel
boxes. It's a bit overwhelming. I just want to find something like a

25-pack of good quality discs that I can depend on for quality and
durability.

Also, I'd like to know where to find those slim-line jewel boxes that
most
people I I know use for CDs they make themselves.

Here's the model of the CD-ROM drive/recorder in my Dell PC. I'm under
the
impression that the write speed is 52x, but if anyone knows
differently,
please say.

thanks a lot. Here's my recorder model, courtesy of Belarc Advisor:
