audio input device or phono preamp with USB port

2016-03-29 Thread André van Deventer
Hi all I’m needing to record some vinyl records onto my computer mostly
for sentimental reasons.

I already have a rega turntable so that is not the problem. As this is a
high quality turntable, I would not like to decrease the sound quality in
any way.

So it seems there are two scenarios I can use regarding the hardware?

1.I can get a phono preamp with an analog sound output and then get
some kind of a USB audio input device with an analog input. Or

2. I can get a phono preamp with a USB connection.

Any advice from anyone on which route to go?

Regards

André

personally, I would go for the first option, as then, you will have the pick
of choice of equipment, so that you can maintain audio quality, where as
going for option 2 means that you are going to be limited to those preamps
with a USB connection only, and what ever bit and sample rates they choose
to use.

Thanx man for your advice.

I'm looking at a NAD phono preamp at the moment which has both a USB and a
line out as well as a line input should you want to transfer e.g. cassette
tapes. They have a reasonably good reputation regarding low end audiofile
equipment so I suppose you can not go far wrong. Rega also seems to have a
phono preamp which has only a line output. This would of course mean that
you have to purchase some kind of audio input device. And of course I would
have to get hold of some record cleaning stuff also. It's been years since
I worked with vinyl records.

SV: SV: sound blaster xfi

2016-03-29 Thread Brian Olesen
HI,
I'd recommend either the Asus Xonar or Creative Xfi in the latest eddition.
They're all both hifi and surround sound, and sounds way better then all the
build in crap.
Just be sure that the connection you choose fits your current pc as many newer
cards comes as pci express cards.

Best regards
Brian

2016-03-29 Thread Joe Paton
Hello André

The first option looks favourable.

You could use the analogue input and output for other devices if you so needed
to once you have finished with the transcription of your vinyl.

If any of the devices are maines powered, be sure to check for any hum loops or
other extraneous interfeerence.

The little Roland pre-amp I am using here, is beautifully quiet. Either that,
or i'm deaf and it doesn't matter anyway. But it has analogues in, with manual
gain on the audio channel.
Headphone socket for monitoring if you need it.

Good Luck, and enjoy those hours ahead of real-time transcription.

Joe

voice activated radio

2016-03-29 Thread Peter Russillo
Hello, is there such a device as a voice-activated radio that will go to
whatever frequency you tell it to go to? For instance if your favorite FM
station is at 89.9 on the dial, is there a radio to which you could say, "Go
to 89.9" and it would do so? This would be helpful especially if the power
goes out but you haven't put that station into a preset if the radio has
presets; otherwise one would have to spend time going up and down the
frequencies until the right one is reached. Thanks.
