2014-12-28 Thread Johny Cassidy
I've seen a lot of these so called miracle devices over the years, and whilst
in no way do I want to dispel the hope that something like this might bring, it
seems to me that they're at a very early stage of development. I agree that it
does sound great, but the technical aspects of how the device works aren't
explained at all. I'd be keen to find out exactly how it does the things it
says it does.

Anyone can do a video, does not mean a thing, it may be just an idea

I have read the page and listened to the video -- mostly in other
languages -- but again, its doubtful that the device can do what it says
unless they have some new technology, so I would be extremely cautious
in case its somebody trying to just get money.

using tapin to record from other sites

2014-12-28 Thread Mike Bernard
Hello fellow pc-audio listers:

Does anyone know how to get Tapin Radio to record live streams that come
from other sites to which are not part of the Tapin Radio database?

For example, the local church in my area has a live stream of their cermon
that broadcasts on their site. I can not find the site in Tapin's database,
so if I go directly to the site itself and get the live stream playing, is
there a way to get Tapin to record that stream? Thanks.

2014-12-28 Thread Alexandra Grünauer
They can't expect any fonding from blind people, since the video is purely
visual. Having not read their site, I don't know what this Horus really
does. If they'd really care to improve the quality of life of blind people,
you'd think they'd at least take into consideration that blind people
without those super glasses aren't able to read subtitles.
To me the longlasting battery isn't as important as other features.
Saving information and clearly putting it to something the device picks up,
seems to me rather difficult.
How do we know, i.e. who or what exactly we're looking at?
It's also quite difficult, I find, with all the audio information we have to
pick up already. I don't think that I'd want another additional information
channel streaming into my brain.

I agree, I would be cautious about such claims. Personally, I would much
prefer to have information from a human rather than technology. Also, it
could result in over reliance on Horus, and it is something extra that has

The video is mostly meant for sighted people, but do read the web
sight it is much more detailed.
You can save things on it I'm guessing, sinse it mentions being able
to save the face of a loved one etc so I'm guessing that there are
presets somewhere in there.

The potential of this thing is enormous, you guys must realise that.
No more wondering what something in a shop is with this as one tiny
example.

it fits on a pair of glasses. People walk around with glasses on all
the time it's not like you're having to carry it about with you.

Yes, I'd rather have it from a human. I think we all would. But that's
not always going to happen is it?

This is the single most exciting blind related thing I've ever heard
about, seriously life-changing stuff.

Re: Podcatchers

2014-12-28 Thread Steve Pattison

Hi Ketan,

Two programs you might like to try are Accessible Podcatcher which is
free and available from

www.webbie.org.uk/accessiblepodcatcher/index.htm

And QCast which I use and is designed to work with screen readers and is
shareware available from

http://q-continuum.net/qcast

I hope this helps.

Regards Steve.

And I have not heard anything from actuall users about this product. So I think
both are just a lot of hype trying to get funding.

I agree, I would be cautious about such claims. Personally, I would much
prefer to have information from a human rather than technology. Also, it
could result in over reliance on Horus, and it is something extra that has
to be carried.

I've seen a lot of these so called miracle devices over the years, and
whilst in no way do I want to dispel the hope that something like this might
bring, it seems to me that they're at a very early stage of development. I
agree that it does sound great, but the technical aspects of how the device
works aren't explained at all. I'd be keen to find out exactly how it does
the things it says it does.

But if your loved one is close enough for it to recognise, then both of you can

The video is mostly meant for sighted people, but do read the web
sight it is much more detailed.
You can save things on it I'm guessing, sinse it mentions being able
to save the face of a loved one etc so I'm guessing that there are
presets somewhere in there.

The potential of this thing is enormous, you guys must realise that.
No more wondering what something in a shop is with this as one tiny
example.

Not if you're in a busy street and you do not know they are there.

It doesn't seem like hype to me. and let's face it, if it isn't hype
and is genuine wouldn't you say it's pretty amazing? it can read books
to you aparrently and personally I'd be willing to risk a bit of
funding for such a life-changing thing.
I've spent money on things I hardly use, cds I hardly play, etc, but
the point is if this doesn't get the funding it needs and is what they
say it is and can do what they say it can, the entire blind comunity
is seriously missing out.
Why don't those of us with specific questions ask the developers them?

I assume to a person who's been blind from birth looking at a certain thing
can only be achieved with a great amount of training, if at all.
If people don't even think when doing a promotion video they most certainly
don't have blind people in mind but only profit. I'd be very careful with
your hopes, if I were you. This can only lead to disappointment.

Re: horus: the invisible made audio, please please read and share

2014-12-28 Thread Robert Godridge
What's wrong with making a youtube video?
everything else is in text. the web page is text, the project sight is
text, etc. What is wrong with a video so that sighted people can
actually see the thing?
and if they're trying to get it premoted that is because they need
backing. I don't see anything wrong with that.
I really think people should be told about this.

Also, if it is supposed to give verbal feedback to you, how can we hear how
it actually sounds and what it says if the video does not have sound?

RE: using tapin to record from other sites

2014-12-28 Thread Humberto Rodriguez
Go to the File menu of Tapin Radio, to "Open URL" and type the URL of the
stream. It will start playing, then record it. You could
save the stream's URL in Favorities. Nake sure to use the stream's URL, the
one that has a semicolon and a port number.

Thanks.

Hi Folks,
Considering all of the attention pertaining to awareness and accessibility,
indeed, there should have been descriptive video, an (audio track) inserted.
I think that they honestly should have thought about that and included it.

2014-12-28 Thread Brent Harding
I heard something about Google trying to do this for grocery shopping, and
it came down to sort of a choice of not very portable devices with lots of
processing power, or something more portable that needed a lot of mobile
data that basically streamed video to process in the cloud to recognize. I
don't know, but this probably couldn't pick out paratransit vehicles as
opposed to other vehicles unless one actually got to ride on every one in
town and train it as being such.

No, it isn't.
There's a video about it on youtube, it just sounds almost too good to be
true. Just think of the difference it would make.
Here's the video
Horus - The invisible made audible - ENG: http://youtu.be/wpbOLRsBPM4

2014-12-28 Thread Brent Harding
I wonder how Youtube deals with video files you upload that contain a second
track that description would be in? Will it give the viewer an option to
switch, or do they end up stripping it out? I suppose you could upload a
second one that's described.

There is such a thing as audio description which would be appropriate, I
think.

What's wrong with making a youtube video?
everything else is in text. the web page is text, the project sight is

text, etc.

What is wrong with a video so that sighted people can actually see the
thing?
and if they're trying to get it premoted that is because they need

backing. I

don't see anything wrong with that.
I really think people should be told about this.

Re: Best Bluetooth speaker

2014-12-28 Thread Jeff Samco
I have recently purchased the Creative Roar bluetooth speaker from
Amazon for $150. Although I have only heard the small JamBox this
Creative speaker is far better, as it should be for being much
larger. Don't know how it compares with a Bose SoundLink 3 or large JamBox.

The Roar is about 10 inches wide, 7 inches deep and 2 inches high. It
has an extremely solid feel and lots of weight, likely due to the 6
amp battery in it. It has 2 different amplifiers: one to drive the
base speaker, and one to drive the 2 other speakers for mids and
highs. The sound is extremely balanced throughout the range. There's
a "roar" button that boosts the sound to more fully fill a room.
Volume goes quite loud with no distortion.

There are lots of reviews on Amazon. Admittedly, a significant number
of the reviews seem over the top in their praise. But, in my personal
listening I find the speaker extremely good for the price.

HTH,
Jeff

If you don't need a lot of boom people are liking the bose blue

better than the sound link Mini for about $200.

I would just include good description in the audio. Doesn’t have to be a
separate track for us.
