I have an Onkyo surround system that I use for TV and movies, but I feel that surround sound is excellent for music, in my opinion. What application are you using? The application DVD Audio Extractor has several settings that will help with this. For example, you could break the movie up into chapters but then have it create a playlist of all of the chapters for you. You could also have it create one audio file for the whole movie instead of individual chapters. I tried to look for where the settings are, but since it's a wizard interface, and I'd need a DVD to get past the initial screen, I'd figured I'd wait to see if you needed this specific information or not first. doc wrote: > the program I currantly use will divide the disk into chapters which is great > for the tv series I get but it also does the same with the movies I get. RE: Itunes 8 now accessible
Alex and all, the new iPod Nanos are sort of accessible but do not use text to speech. They use the technique Rockbox has used for around 5 years, where they use your default system voice on your PC/Mac to create files that live on the nano to announce menus, albums and songs. In terms of iTunes in Windows, iTunes 8 has implemented extensive use of Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA). Because of this, JAWS will be able to work well out of the box with iTunes once we enable MSAA support for iTunes in the next public beta of JAWS 10. I have just been testing this today and am able to use the iTunes Music Store, the Radio feature and many others. Apple have done a good job here. Re: dvd audio extractor
I am using dvd audio extractor but though I have a vague rememberance of creating a single file, for some reason I haven't been able to find that checkbox. I have version 4.3. I just tried it with the "save each chapter as a separate file" unchecked and it only creates a file that is 500k in size. Which doesn't make any since because I have all the chapters checked on the first page. - Original Message - From: Christopher Chaltain To: PC Audio Discussion List Sent: Wednesday, September 10, 2008 1:58 AM Subject: Re: dvd audio extractor What application are you using? RE: Itunes 8 now accessible
Hi Stephen, I have not played with one so am going based on what I've read, but it appears that what happens is that when your nano is connected to your PC or Mac, a scan is made for all albums and songs on your nano. Using your default system voice, say RealSpeak Daniel in SAPI 5 as an example, files are generated for every artist, song and album. These are then copied to your Nano so that as you move through the menus, albums and tracks, you can hear what these tracks are. So this is quite different from having real text to speech on the device itself, and emulates what the guys at Rockbox gave us quite some time ago, but is still commendable nonetheless. RE: Itunes 8 now accessible
Jonathan, so, when you have the new Nano hooked up to your pc, it feeds off the TTS you are running and loads it on to the Nano, or am I way off. Does the Nano require you to install software to have speech? -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jonathan Mosen Sent: Wednesday, September 10, 2008 3:56 PM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: Itunes 8 now accessible Alex and all, the new iPod Nanos are sort of accessible but do not use text to speech. Re: Itunes 8 now accessible
Forgive me for my comment folks. Isn't it just easy enough to listen to music from your phone or preferred MP3 device. It's taken Apple so long to meet the VI sector half way with the accessibility issues. Their attitude was sod the blind and who ever can't access our devices or software. It's good that Apple are getting their head around the accessibility factor but this wasn't the case before. - Original Message - From: "Jonathan Mosen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "'PC Audio Discussion List'" Sent: Wednesday, September 10, 2008 9:37 PM Subject: RE: Itunes 8 now accessible > Hi Stephen, I have not played with one so am going based on what I've > read, > but it appears that what happens is that when your nano is connected to > your > PC or Mac, a scan is made for all albums and songs on your nano. Jonathan, Doesn't playing music on your phone rapidly run your batteries down? And what about quality? I have a phone capable of playing music but I haven't really ever tried it out. Re: Itunes 8 now accessible
I could be wrong here but there are systems out there which will load tracks onto an Ipod (though I grant you the speech functionality probably wouldn't work ) I'm sure I've read about a couple of Panasonic systems which are now available, they have some sort of arrangement whereby the user can copy a whole CD or tracks of same to an Ipod? Re: Itunes 8 now accessible
Yes that's indeed true but managing playlists for a couple of thousand songs can be a challenge for the best of us . Ipod Nanos are far cheaper than say mobile phones and getting Talks or Mobile Speak put on them, not to mention (in the case of the N95 phone at least), more practical as the sound quality is far better. Yes, its taken Apple a while to get things done but thankfully we've had a lot of patient people who have presented Apple with feedback about their products rather than just being content to sit back as blind people do on the whole and wine about how this isn't perfect, that isn't perfect or the other isn't accessible . So finally, I take my hat off to everyone who writes to Apple and other company's with feedback about the products their using, glad its not jut me . Sounds very nice. Thanks for the information. Rick - Original Message - From: "Jonathan Mosen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "'PC Audio Discussion List'" Sent: Wednesday, September 10, 2008 6:42 PM Subject: RE: Itunes 8 now accessible Hi Rick, it depends on what else you're doing. On my N82, I get about 10-12 hours of continuous music on a plane, that is to say when the phone functions aren't running. It's less when they are, and less again if you have WiFi active. Some of the new Nokia phones offer over 24 hours of music playback though. Another advantage of going with the Nokia phones is their built-in support for podcasting. I was in a meeting in another city a couple of days ago. On my way to the airport, I used a HSDPA connection to download a bunch of podcasts and catch up with the news in-flight. The podcast client remembers your place in each podcast. There is a DAISY player for Symbian as well, so you can read newspapers from Newsline etc on it. The N82 will also play Audible content. And even though I don't have one of the phones with longer music playback time because I use the KNFB Reader which only works on the N82 for now, I have a tiny device with me that is a 3400 MA battery, allowing me to charge the phone 3 times. The battery in turn then charges via a wall outlet or USB port. So for me, carrying an iPod, a Stream, or whatever it might be makes no sense. A smartphone does so much more and is in your pocket for a range of uses. In the US, obviously NLS may be a factor, but it isn't for me. Trotal recorder 7 and JFW
Hi guys, I installed TR7 as the FAQ sez I need it to record skype calls using the new kernal driver. after restarting it completely blew away all my sounds including windoes events and JFW. Is this a known bug or should I have installed it using the normal software driver then swithc in order to record. Maybe I am forging new ground here as I can't remember seeing this discussion here before. If this is the case, then the talking nano is seriously flawed, since you must connect a computer to it to get the speech recordings of your tracks and albums. In response to the question "Does the Nano require you to install software to have speech?"I also think you need to have iTunes 8 on your PC. I don't think you need to install any software on the Nano though. RE: Itunes 8 now accessible
Hi Rick, it depends on what else you're doing. Re: Itunes 8 now accessible
Well, I don't agree with the statement "rather than just being content to sit back as blind people do on the whole and wine about how this isn't perfect, that isn't perfect or the other isn't accessible," and yes I did notice the smiley at the end! IMHO, blind people are people too, and this means that we share the positive and not so positive characteristics of our sighted counterparts. I don't think the blind are any more likely to sit back and whine than the sighted. I'm on quite a few lists that have nothing to do with blindness, and I've never found that the blind have a corner on the "sit back and whine" market. Although I disagree with statements like this, that imply the blind are more defensive, lazier or whinier than our sighted counterparts, I do agree with the sentiment that we need to give companies balanced and constructive feedback on our accessibility needs. I don't think rants on the malevolence of Microsoft and Nokia are productive, just like I don't think sermons on how saintly Apple is are beneficial. That's just my $0.02, and it's probably not even worth that! Re: dvd audio extractor
DVD's often have multiple video's on them. DVD Audio Extractor does a good job of guessing which one is the main video, but you might want to check that you're selecting the right video, i.e. usually the largest. doc wrote: > I think my copy has a flaw. Jonathan, I probably won't be buying a new iPod Nano since I have an N82 with plenty of storage and several other players including my old iRiver H120 with Rockbox, but I'm glad that Apple finally produced an iPod we can use without any modification. It's also nice that the voice tagging of menus and songs is done automatically by iTunes once the feature is activated in the software. Rockbox is nice also, but there's no automated way of voice tagging songs, and we have to settle for the titles being spelled instead of spoken. Yes, if you read down through this thread far enough, I think you'll see that if you have an iPod Nano (4th generation) and iTunes version 8 on your Mac or PC then you can set it up so that the Nano will given you spoken menus as well as spoken file and track names. Furthermore, iTunes version 8 is also accessible with Winows-Eyes and JAWS, so you can use it to populate your Nano with music, pod casts and so on. RE: Itunes 8 now accessible
Hi Gary, There is software downloadable from the Rockbox site that does exactly what the software for the nano is doing. IE, it scans the MP3 player for files, uses your default speech synthesiser to make recordings of the albums, folders and file names, and puts those recordings with a special file extension onto the Rockbox-enabled player. I know, as I've used it regularly. The only time Rockbox will spell the files out is if you don't use this utility. That said, you can't play Audible or protected iTunes content on Rockbox. It's also nice that the voice tagging of menus and songs is done automatically by iTunes once the feature is activated in the software. Rockbox is nice also, but there's no automated way of voice tagging songs, and we have to settle for the titles being spelled instead of spoken.
