True Stereo and Easy CD-Da Extractor

2007-05-30 Thread Bruce Toews
Every time I rip a CD using Easy CD-Da Extractor to MP3, the resulting
file is in joint stereo. Is there a way I can convince the program to use
true stereo? I just ripped 48 CD's to FLAC using Easy CD-DA Extractor. Did
I get joint stereo there, too?

A mystery, to me anyway!

2007-05-30 Thread Walter Ramage
Hello to everyone. I have a question that has been irritating me for some
time now. Some years ago I had some Vinyl LPs and then recorded them to mini
disc via analogue, naturally. I then recorded them to CD on a stand-alone
hi-fi audio CD recorder; I did this digitally via coaxial cable. I had
these CDs for some years and once I got a PC I then ripped them to the hard
drive using sometimes CDEX, Windows Media and Reel Player. More times than
not I would still get a full and accurate album title, artist list and track
listing. Now I can understand this happening when you rip a commercial CD
but does anyone know the criteria used for retrieving this information from
the database bearing in mind the original recording from Vinyl to Mini disc
was done via analogue and not digitally. This is even more of a mystery
when you consider that some of these LPs were from the early sixties and
never were found on CD. I hope someone can answer my query. With many
thanks. MR Baffled

Re: Wireless transmitter

2007-05-30 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Does anyone have a contact phone number for Veronica? I went to
the veronica web site and never did find a phone number.
What I am trying to ascertain is just how easily a totally blind
user can change the transmit frequency on one of these units. I
realize that the company will set the unit to a user specified
frequency. But, what if the user later needs to change
frequency?

Thanks.

Subject: Wireless transmitter

Hi
Can anyone suggest a good quality robust wireless transmitter?
I bought 2 small fairly inexpensive wireless transmitters
recently (now
legal in UK) to 1. tTake sound from my computer's soundcard and
broadcast
this into the fm band of my new Sony DVD player 5.1 system.
2. To broadcast Sky from the box throughout my house for each VHF
radio to
pick up.
(Both transmitters are at different buildings) I probably got
what I paid
for. Both transmitters do work but sometimes slightly distorted,
suggesting
not a strong enough range. There is also a fairly strong hum in
the
background, I hasten to add which is not in the original.

I'm looking for something which gives good quality, as good as
normal sound
on VHF. Any suggestions from your own experience?
Thanks.

Re: True Stereo and Easy CD-Da Extractor

2007-05-30 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Bruce.

I'd be shocked if joint stereo had been used for a lossless format like
FLAC. The whole point of joint stereo is to superficially mess with the
signals from both channels to exagerate them and make up for that horrible
compressed, boxed in sound you get from anything ripped under at least
192kbps. With lossless formats there's no need to mess with the sound, it's
a perfect representation of the original.

Regards.

Re: Revox cassette recorder

2007-05-30 Thread Bob Seed
I knew one guy that put his whole music collection on Beta, as the fidelity
was superb at the time and was the best system going, Unfortunately the
public bought into VHS, and the beta system never really caught on. We have
made tremendous strides with audio over the past 20 years or so. No more
cracking and popping, and the wow and flutter of audio tape is virtually a
thing of the past. With good audio equipment it is possible to produce
broadcast quality recording from a home environment using many of the
popular software programs now on the market. Many radio stations are now
using off the shelf CD players in their studios, and when they breakdown
they simply throw them away. .

The Revox cassette recorder that you are probably looking for is the
 model
 710.
Nakimichi made two professional cassette recorders in the 70's. The
 1000,
and the cheaper 700. I personally have the 700 model. It is a solenoid
machine with three motors with Dolby, echo, and a oscillator for tape
alignment. The thinking here is that there are no two cassettes alike
despite how stringent manufacturing might be. By using the tone for
alignment you could be assured of a perfect recording all of the time.
 .
 The
700 even comes with a wired remote control. This company also made a
portable 600 model which was very good for field recording.
You may also want to look at Tascam. Tascam is the professional line of
Teac. If I had my druthers and wanted to stick with the audio tape
format I would much rather use R-dat. The problem here is that R-dat is
 used
professionally, and unfortunately did not catch on with the public as
expected. It has been rumoured in the audio file community that CD's
 are
 now
on the way out in favour of audio being put on flash cards and hard
 drives.
It truly makes sense, as you can now get a 500 GB external hard drive
 for
about 150 bucks. One could virtually have their entire record
 collection
 on
one portable drive to take anywhere. Most commercial radio stations now
 have
their entire music library on hard drives.

Re: True Stereo and Easy CD-Da Extractor

2007-05-30 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Victoria.

Hope the following helps a little to explain the difference.

The followign is from the CDEX manual. Basically, don't use Joint Stereo
unless you're dealing with very low bit rates like 128kbps. For these files
joint stereo will do some messing with the file to try and enhance the
stereo image of the music.

With the LAME encoder, you can specify how the file is encoded. The default
stereo option is recommended, but at lower
bit-rates, the Joint-stereo or Forced stereo can yield better sound quality.
Stereo: In this mode, the encoder makes no use of potential similarity
between the two input channels. It can,
however, negotiate the bit demand between both channels, i.e. give one
channel more bits if the other contains
silence.
Joint stereo: In this mode, the encoder will make use of a correlation
between both channels. The signal will be
matrixed into a sum ("mid") and difference ("side") signal. For quasi-mono
signals, this will give a significant gain in
encoding quality. This mode does not destroy phase information like IS
stereo that may be used by other encoders.
This setting can be used to encode DOLBY ProLogic surround signals.
force joint stereo: This mode will force MS joint stereo on all frames.
It's faster and it uses some special mid and
side masking threshold.
Mono: This option will forcibly generate a mono file; if the input file is a
stereo file, the input stream will be read as a
mono by averaging the left and right channels.

OK guys, talking about swaping music is really off topic for

Joint Stereo Issue May be a Winamp Issue

2007-05-30 Thread Bruce Toews
I think the joint stereo issue may in fact be a Winamp issue. Winamp is
reporting everything being joint stereo, even stuff I know for a fact I
saved as true stereo using Gold Wave. Is there any way to find out
definitively whether or not a file is in joint stereo?

Yes check out the 100 milliwat unit if you're looking to transmit just
around your immediate living area. The only issue with this unit is you
will need to have someone help you set the frequency. Once that is done
however you should be set.

2007-05-30 Thread Dave McLean
The Ramsey units aren't bad either. I'm not up on what the legal power
limit is in the U K these days but you might be able to purchase one of
their assembled units.
If not you'd need to find someone to assemble the kit.
Also the Decade Ms100-s is a great sounding unit and is legal to operate in
the U S so I'd imagine also in the U K. It costs between 5 and 6 hundred
dollars though.

 Hi
Can anyone suggest a good quality robust wireless transmitter?
I bought 2 small fairly inexpensive wireless transmitters recently (now
legal in UK) to 1. tTake sound from my computer's soundcard and
 broadcast
this into the fm band of my new Sony DVD player 5.1 system.
 2. To broadcast Sky from the box throughout my house for each VHF radio
 to
 pick up.
(Both transmitters are at different buildings) I probably got what I
 paid
for. Both transmitters do work but sometimes slightly distorted,
 suggesting
not a strong enough range. There is also a fairly strong hum in the
background, I hasten to add which is not in the original.

I'm looking for something which gives good quality, as good as normal
 sound
on VHF. Any suggestions from your own experience?
 Thanks.

A SoundForge Question.

2007-05-30 Thread Jim Noseworthy
Hi Gang:

I have a large audio book as an MP3 file which I would like to split in to
chapters. Is it possible, using SoundForge, to automatically insert queue
points bassed on a given time of silence between chapters. Although this is
possible with Goldwave, GoldWave has other issues.

Thanks all over the place gang.

Re: Wireless transmitter

2007-05-30 Thread Chuck Adkins
Ccrane is very good, but for them to be useable there was an adjustment you
had to make but I understand the new ones have been modified so you can't
make the adjustment. The afore mentioned adjustment didn't make them
illegal, and if your not interfering with anyone, I don't think anyone would
even notice.

No, I was able to search it very well and could preview music too without
joining. We joined it and I loved it but my wife didn't because they didn't
have much she liked. Guess what we don't have anymore

Whoops, I replied to John's message before seeing this post. Sorry about
that. I should probably read all my email before replying to anything. I

Tom, have you thought of fixing it so the subject line has the list name?

Much to my chagrin, I just loked at some original wave files I'd created
with Easy CD-DA Extractor. This is, or at least should be, absolutely
uncompressed. I have found that everything I've created in Easy CD-DA
Extractor, no matter what the format, is in joint stereo. People should be
warned about this.

Wi Fi radios

Listers,

Has anyone found an accessible Wi Fi radio, that has a somewhat reasonable
price? I googled Wi Fi radios and got a bunch of stuff, but, I am aware
that the Acoustic Energy radio is not accessible; is there anything out
there, with buttons and such?

Thanks,

Mac, I touched one accessible Wi fi radio at the Sihgtcity in Frankfurt
Germany this month. Sightcity is the German equivalent to CSUN. The
Orion Webbox talks. It is made for blind people. Unfortunately, it
cannot play RealAudio, but it is nevertheless a very interesting
machine, the first talking LAN and Wi fi radio. The manufacturer is from
the Netherlands and they told me, that they already sold some in the
U.S. If I understood them correctly, they work with some radio reading
services: www.solutionsradio.com.

RE: Wireless transmitter

2007-05-30 Thread Jonathan Mosen
I guess people's mileage varies as they say, but for me, even after making
the mod to the CCrane, the performance was significantly worse in terms of
coverage than the two Veronica units I own.

Winamp Scripts

2007-05-30 Thread Jana Jackson
Hi! I just installed Winamp 5.35. I've been using the scripts from JFW
Lite with 5.33, but it looks like they don't work very well with 5.35. Not
in the library, anyway. Is there a way to get the original scripts back, or
has someone written some new ones? Thanks!

Thanks for this, Michael! Well, Real Audio is not my format of choice,
anyway, so, I won't, probably, miss anything! To each their own! I will
check it out!

Try Veronica transmitters or a Canadian site called FM amplifiers. C Craine
is also another good source for FM home transmitters Just google them and
you are off to the races. .

I think that flash could be the new standard. After all, with flash, I

>>>
The last thing that you want to do is to amerce your cassette in water.
Make sure that anything that comes in contact with the audio tape is
 clean
such as the tape transport, capstan, pinch roller, and record and
 playback
heads. Once that is done, and the tape still squeeks then you may want
 to
 try the following.
 Tape Baking
When magnetic recording tapes are being stored, moisture is slowly
absorbed by the binder that holds the components of the tape together.
Affected tapes will squeak when played back. The squeaking can be heard
directly from the tape passing over the playback head and other fixed
parts of the player, but is also transmitted electronically through the
playback head. Often the tape will also sound dull and distorted.

If you hear a tape that is squeaking, stop playing the tape
 immediately.
Continuing to play a squeaking tape can cause permanent damage to the
tape, and in some cases damage to the player.

This problem can happen to any tape, but is more common in tapes
manufactured after the mid 1970s in the USA.

The solution to the problem of sque
