Re: Sound editing and Marking Time Intervals
Hi, I use both gold wave and sound forge and absolutely they do. With sound forge, its very very easy. Press the up or down arrows to change the zoom, and right and left arrows to position yourself exactly where you want to be. You can mark a bit you'd like to cut out and preview what it would sound like if you pressed delete, before you actually ax anything, and if you make a mistake, there is always the undo feature! Sound forge is, in my world, the best there is out there for simple and complex editing! Re: Sound editing and Marking Time Intervals
I personally never could get the hang of Sound Forge (which is in no way knocking the program), but I have done some pretty complicated editing with Gold Wave, which also allows for editing to within a thousandth of a second. Its strength is the ability to move through a file like we used to do with a tape recorder, and then do fine-tuning by manipulating the start and finish markers in other ways. I record all of my radio shows using GW, and being the perfectionist I am, have gotten quite good at intricate editing. Re: mp3 bit rates
Hi Gary. Size of file doesn't determine which end of the spectrum is thrown away. It's based on psycho-acoustic algorithms that try and determine what it believes you can't hear so dropping the range at both ends of the spectrum is the most likely stuff to throw away as people commonly lose hearing in these areas as they age. The bit rate will determine the frequency response of the music which is the real measure of quality. So, a bit rate of 128kbps will yield a frequency range that is much more limited than 320 kbps which means less low end and high treble frequency. Less dynamic frequency range, less quality... Re: mp3 bit rates
Hi. That's not quite the information I was talking about. The frequency range table I was talking about gives details like: 128kbps frequency range of 50 hz to 16 khz 320 kbps frequency range of 20 hz to 20 khz These are fictitious examples to try and demonstrate only. So, you see, you can decide on bit rates based on how much high and low frequency you want to throw away. Regards. Kevin E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: "Doc" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. " Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2007 7:25 AM Subject: Re: mp3 bit rates Here is that information. Choosing the Best Bit Rate for Your MP3 Files Bit Rate Matters Quite A Bit Digital audio files are NOT all created equal. Technical characteristics like bit rate, sample size, and sampling frequency can have a big impact on sound quality. One of the most common - and easily controllable - settings in the CD-ripping process is the bit rate. When you convert CD's to MP3's using a bit rate that is too low, high frequency content - cymbals for example - can take on a distorted, shimmering sound. Midrange content (like vocals) can also sound "squashed" or artificial. But just a little knowledge about the MP3 conversion process can help you pick the right bit rate to deliver great sound quality. CD Quality and Bit Rate Let's start from the top down in terms of quality. "CD quality" is 16 bits of pure high-energy audio at a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz. We will use "CD quality" as the benchmark. CD files are called WAV files (.wav) These don't use any compression or conversion from the original source - which is why they are so large and have such great sound. Remember though, that any MP3 converter is "lossy", meaning it is eliminating some information that can't be recovered. You will never have actual CD quality music on your MP3 player, but your ear probably won't know the difference. Some other acronyms to be aware of are MP3 and MPEG. The term MP3 is a shortened word for MPEG audio layer 3. MPEG stands for Motion Picture Experts Group. This is the organization that created the encoding process that takes large CD files and converts them into smaller packages of music to enjoy on-the-go. The MP3 encoding process throws out all of the redundant information in your music that your ear (hopefully) won't miss. It then packages it in a smaller and more convenient file, enabling you to hear basically CD quality music for about 1/12 of the size. A benefit of using MP3 files is that it allows you to control the Bit Rate. Bit rate tells us how fast the data in an audio file is sent through the converter into your storage device. It's akin to taking a hundreds of thousands of nano pictures of the audio information in one second. The most common bit rate is 128kbps (or 128,000 nano pictures of audio in one second). The higher the bit rate, the better the "resolution" or sound quality is compared to the original CD quality file. While downloading music, consider the bandwidth of your connection (i.e. Cable connection, DSL, dial up modem). Attempting to download a larger file will slow your Internet connection and may result in a fragmented audio file. MP3 files were created to combat the lack of bandwidth on the Internet. If you're still using dial up to download your music, stay away from higher quality conversion files (above 128kbs). Variable Bit Rate Thus far, we have been discussing constant bit rates, meaning that the bit rate stays the same throughout the song. There is a fairly new process of converting MP3 files called Variable Bit Rate (VBR). A VBR converter analyzes the file before converting it and decides what rate to convert and at what point in the song that it should change. With VBR, a denser file (one with a lot of instruments or sounds occurring simultaneously) will convert at a lower overall bit rate but sound just as good if it was converted at a higher rate. The result is consistent quality no matter what type of file is being converted and is great if you have a wide-ranging collection of music. With Constant Bit Rate (CBR), you will have consistent file sizes but possibly inconsistent quality depending on your music selections. Most new players support VBR but you should read the specs on your player and the software you are using before you start converting your entire library. How to Set the Bit Rate In order to determine how to set your bit rate, you will need to balance your need for hard drive space and sound quality with the type of music you will be listening to - only you can decide what works best. 128kbps is a common default converter, but for some people, it is not acceptable quality. The higher the bit rate, the better your music will sound, but you will cramp the space on your hard drive. If half of your library happens to be audio books, converting or downloading the audio at a high bit rate as opposed to a low bit rate will have very little e

With my Corner Gas DVD's, the Described Video track simply appears as another audio track: you have 5.1 Surround, regular stereo, and DVS; if there's a commentary track, it follows the DVS in order. Problem subscribing to blind replay list
I have tried to subscribe to the blind replay list that was announced here several times with 2 different email addresses with no success. For some reason, this is always the case with my email addresses and any freelist.org subscription.. Every attempt to reply to the confirmation email with either address returns a result message stating "invalid number of parameters". I have also tried cutting and pasting the necessary lines from the confirmation message into a new message addressed to ecartis@freelists.org with the same results. Sorry to have to post here, but could the moderator of the blind replay list please contact me off list so that I can be somehow subscribed to the list? Are you including the original messages in the confirmation? And are you replying to the actual confirmation message as opposed to the message stating that a confirmation message has been sent? Re: Problem subscribing to blind replay list
Rick Bruce is absolutely correct here. Do you have your e-mail program, I'm guessing it's outlook express? set up so that the message you're replying to is included with your reply? if not, you need to enable that, i believe it's under tools/options, go to the send tab. press the tab key until you hear, include message in reply. If that box isn't checked, check it and then try subscribing again. After that, I believe all your problems will be over. well, we can hope. Re: GoldWave Question
You can do this to a limited degree with GW. I've used it several times to record vocals over prerecorded music tracks, for example. I did a five-voice jingle for my radio show, spreadi9ng the voices across the stereo spectrum. And I do all my own cross-fading manually on my show, so that requires Gold Wave's mixing ability. But you can't do multitrack recording. I assume everything I've mentioned is very doable in Sound Forge too. Bruce On Tue, 27 Feb 2007 14:44:21 -0600, "Jana Jackson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> said: > Hi! Re: mp3 bit rates
ok, here is a question for all of you what would you think of a mp3 at the following specks 128 kbps 192000 khz 24 bits per sample? just wondering? - Original Message - From: "Doc" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. " Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2007 12:04 PM Subject: Re: mp3 bit rates the article below gives information on choosing the right bit rate for your audio. If half of your library happens to be audio books, converting or downloading the audio at a high bit rate as opposed to a low bit rate will have very little effect on the quality, but will take up more space. The table below gives you some perspective on quality to size ratio. table with 4 columns and 6 rows Format Bit Rate Compression Ratio Compression Ratio Approx. File Size/Per Mi

First of all, I'm not disputing you. But the whole point of my asking you to be sure you include the original message in your reply is that, for every system I know besides Freelist, that's precisely how it *doesn't work. Most list servers don't require you to include the message in your reply, Freelist is the one exception I know of. That's why that's the first thing we tell anyone who's having trouble subscribing to a freelists list. I had the problem at the beginning, and was used to not including the original in a reply toa mailing list confirmation. It was precisely because I knew the drill with every other provider that I had trouble with Freelists. I did say "if you want to play a *shoutcast* stream." For XM streams, the easiest solution is to get sighted assistance to select each of your favorite streams, play them, and bookmark them. " Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2007 12:04 PM Subject: Re: mp3 bit rates the article below gives information on choosing the right bit rate for your audio. If half of your library happens to be audio books, converting or downloading the audio at a high bit rate as opposed to a low bit rate will have very little effect on the quality, b

Re: [SUSPECTED SPAM] Re: A bunch of live Live 365 Questions
Hi, I used winamp to broadcast with live365 because they supported that at least at the time. i used easy cd da extracer to rip songs for the autimation but ccdex will work just as nicly. I remember the really god old days when it was free, and before the lisencing crap came up. I gave up because it was costing me like 30 some bucks a month at the time to broadcast and I just couldn't justify it. Have you looked into going with a shoutcast provider? The big problem is with l365 that you have to be a member to listen now if memory serves me correctly. It used to be that anyone could tune in if they knew the url for your station. STRANGE PROBLEM WITH SAPI 5 VOICES
Hi all Something very strange is happening with my system. Using Windows xp with Jaws 8. All my sapi voices, including the despicable microsoft voices, used to work fine on my machine. For some or other reason, none of my sapi voices, including the realspeak ones, don't work anymore. When I go into control panel and go into speech, I am unable to play any of the voices. I am simply told that the voices cannot beplayed although they are definitely installed. Can anyone help?
