CPAN wrong module install attempt

2003-11-09 Thread Domizio Demichelis
Hi, I have a problem with the installation of my modules (Text::MagicTemplate
and HTML::MagicTemplate) that I am not able to solve by myself even reading all
the doc I found until now.

It's a very simple installation with just 2 very simple Makefile.PL, that I
checked some hundred of times, but I probably ignore some simple rule or there
is a bug in the cpan system.

If you try to install by cpan the Text::MagicTemplate module, cpan tries to
install HTML::MagicTemplate instead, and since the HTML::MagicTemplate has the
Text::MagicTemplate module as a prerequisite, cpan detects a recursive
dependency.

Please try this to reproduce the problem :

install Bundle::Text::MagicTemplate

It should be reproducible even if you just try:

install Text::MagicTemplate

These are the important lines that you should obtain from the installation that
should explain the problem:

> Running install for module Text::MagicTemplate
> Running make for D/DO/DOMIZIO/HTML-MagicTemplate-3.14.tar.gz

Please let me know what is happening.

THANK YOU for your time

Domizio Demichelis

Well, I guess, although im unconvinced. It seems to me that Data::Stream by
itself conveys serialization, which is all that dumping is. The fact that it
suggests IO Streams is just a nice coincidental byproduct.

I suppose Im also a little adverse to names like this just because of the
wise guy factor "What, it takes a dump in a stream?" . Maybe that isnt a
particularly relevent but still. (I encountered this already with BFDump and
im a little keen to avoid it this time round. Names are important :-)

Here are my personal criteria for a name for the module:
1. it avoids wise guy names.
2. its short enough that its not a PITA for -M usage.
3. its in the Data:: name space.
4. Id like it to denote that it streams (as in writes to a stream)
5. Id like it to denote that it serializes
6. Id like it to leave room so that it allows for formats other than perl.

So I was thinking

Data::Stream
for the current release, with it being a wrapper into

  Data::Stream::Perl
  Data::Stream::XML
  Data::Stream::YAML
  Data::Stream::Binary

or whatever once I have other versions.

Anyway, i'm interested to see if you still stand by your view or if you
have alternate suggestions based on the above. Im not totally sold on
Data::Stream, but so far its the best of what ive seen and heard.

Cheers,
Yves

Module submission Net::UP::Notify

2003-11-09 Thread Perl Authors Upload Server

The following module was proposed for inclusion in the Module List:

  modid:   Net::UP::Notify
  DSLIP:   cdpOp
  description: Sends Net Alerts to Cell Phone Web Browsers
  userid:  PTIMMINS (Paul Timmins)
  chapterid:5 (Networking_Devices_IPC)
  communities:

  similar:
Net::SMS Net::SMPP Net::SNPP

  rationale:

The reason I chose Net::UP::Notify is that there are modules
(Net::SMS, NET::SMPP, and NET::SNPP) that do similar things to what
my module does under the Net namespace already. I chose UP because
the original browser in the cellular phone was made by a company
called "Unwired Planet", which has become "phone.com", and now
"Openwave" through acquisitions. I would rather not use phone.com or
Openwave because of trademark concerns and because Openwave still
calls their SDK (which is binary and requires Windows or Solaris)
the "UP SDK". Openwave already distributes a perl module via their
SDK that allows you to send Net Alerts, but the caveat in their
approach is that it runs in Windows only, and uses COM Automation of
a DLL from ActivePerl. Since this is incredibly not portable, I
reverse engineered the format and made a version that simply
requires LWP::UserAgent. I intend to eventually fully support a
portable version of the SDK under the Net::UP tree, but for now I
just have Net::UP::Notify. I wish I could retain interface
compatibility with their example code, but it's so broken and
convoluted because of the DLL automation that it would be
impossible.

Anyway, that's the story. :-)

  enteredby:   PTIMMINS (Paul Timmins)
  enteredon:   Sun Nov  9 16:37:46 2003 GMT

The resulting entry would be:

Net::UP::
::Notify cdpOp Sends Net Alerts to Cell Phone Web Browsers PTIMMINS
