[MlMt] update - what to copy from the old Mac to the new one in order to preserve EVERYTHING in MailMate

2022-09-03 Thread Vlad Ghitulescu

Hey,

I'll switch Macs in a couple of days and I want to have MailMate just
like it is now šŸ˜‰ on the new Mac.

Last time I did something similar I installed MailMate on the new Mac
and before starting it I copied from the old Mac the following files &
folders:

~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/*.plist
~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Resources/
~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Bundles/
~/Library/Preferences/com.freron.MailMate.plist

Is this still the way to do this or did something changed?

Thanks!

Vlad

[MlMt] How to make a smart mailbox for a Mailing List?

2016-01-15 Thread Vlad Ghitulescu

Hello!

I would like to make a smart mailbox in MailMate that contains all of
the mails from the BBEdit-Talk Google Discussion-Group.

All of the mails in this group have in the To-field this email-address
ā€žbbe...@googlegroups.comā€œ, so I have made a smart mailbox with the
condition showed in the attachment.

However the mailbox doesnā€™t seem to work: I see only a single email in
this mailbox but I have a couple more in my Inbox.

What have I done wrong?

Emails from a mailing list usually have a "List-id" header that works
better for smart mailboxes or rules than the "To" header.

Try changing the condition of the smart mailbox to "List-id" being
equal to "bbedit.googlegroups.com" (which is the list id of the BBEdit
mailing list).

You can do this by clicking on the dropdown menu that currently says
"Recipient (To, Cc, Bcc)", scrolling all the way down to "Other..."
and filtering the list to find "List-id" and checking that to put it
in the menu.

Then you should be able to choose it as the condition and set its
value to bbedit.googlegroups.com

Hopefully that helps.

Another thing is to make sure you are choosing the right Mailboxes in
the Mailboxes tab.

Finally, you can find the List-id of emails from other mailing lists
by opening a message from that list, then clicking View > Show Raw
Message, and looking for the "List-id' header, for example:

List-Id: MailMate Users

Sherif

Hello, Sherif!

Thanks for the detailed reply!

I didnā€™t know about the List-id.
Following your advice I could easily change the condition.

How to see the raw message was also on my huge MailMate-question-list
:-).

Thanks again!

You already got some advice,

Yes, clear and helpful - thanks again! The mailing list is becoming a
strong argument for MailMate too :-)

but just to answer this question: You should not use `"<...>"` since
the less/greater than symbols are not necessarily part of the To
header.

Oh, I didnā€™t see this!
Iā€™ve just copied an email-address from the BBEdit-Talk-Googlegroup and
probably it was copied in this form.

Also, it is always better to use the ā€œisā€ comparison method
instead of ā€œcontainsā€ when possible (and it's most often
possible).

That was how I had first made the rule, but it listed only one email so
Iā€™ve begun to make the condition less strict.

In this case, the best condition would probably be:

To ā–ø Address [is] ā€œbbe...@googlegroups.comā€

Understood!

Let me know if that does not work.

It work well now, thanks!

Of course, you can change the junk state as well through the same

That means that commands like moveToMailbox, markAsJunk etc. will work

CMD-arrow up/down and **not** also with simply arrow up/down (as when
the focus is put on this email).

First question: How can I put the focus (with the keyboard, not using

Thanks, Padraic, the copy-trick it was very useful!

Regarding syntax errors while debugging: where can I see them?
Is there a console / log / whatever, where they are listed?

As a (frustrating!!! ;-) example: Iā€™m trying right now **only** this
keybinding

"t" = ( "goToMailbox:", "TRASH" );

where TRASH is the result of your copy-trick, so the name **is** right.

However pressing *t* only brings a dialog about adding/removing tags!
(that I'm not able to find in the menu-bar! :-()
(and this only while *not* having the focus on an email - *with* focus
it opens a field above the email, but for what?!ā€¦ as you see, even
more questions arise! ;-)

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Vlad

with one, comment out everything else, test that one, if it works then
comment out the next one and test and so on.

* Switch to the ā€œRulesā€ pane.

Note that the rule is only applied to new messages in the mailbox. If

It works only for the mailbox I was in in the moment I close MailMate.
Example: If I'm in Inbox and I'm closing MailMate, after restarting
MailMate it only works when I'm in or switching to Inbox, but not in
Sent, Drafts, Deleted or Junk. Correspondently, if I'm in Sent when I'm
closing MailMate, after restarting the focus works only in Sent but in
no other mailbox.

No, is grayed out.

Usually, you only need the INBOX of an account in the IDLE mode.
MailMate has a limit of 3 connections to the IMAP server. This is
mainly because many servers put a limit on the number of open
connections and with multiple devices that limit can easily be
reached.

Then why is it grayed out?

Oh, perhaps because I'm in trial mode?! I have only 4-5 days of using

If I remember correctly MailMate allows three IDLE connections per
account. Could this be the case for you?

Sorry, but I really don't know. *IDLE connection* = synch. schedule
CONNECTED in MailMate?
Right now I have 3 different IMAP accounts configured in MailMate and
none of them have *connected* as choosable alternative in the

Somewhere is an option to allow more connections. If I remember I'll
tell you.

I don't know how MailMate behaves, if the provider don't allow you to
use more IDLE connections.

One of the accounts is a GMail-account, so it should behave GMail-like.

I'm not shure, but this (provider) limit applies for the account over
all connected clients.

The closest would be to inject something in the HTML generation. This
might be easier when I've finished my (major) changes to message
display/generation, but it would still require some kind of script
which can retrieve/manage user images (I guess it should mainly be
able to retrieve an image from Contacts). That's probably the hard
part :-)

Look what I've found yesterday in John Voorhees' article *MailButler
Adds New Tools to Apple Mail* at MacStories
(https://www.macstories.net/reviews/mailbutler-adds-new-tools-to-apple-mail/)

*(ā€¦)
**Sender Avatars and Signatures**

The most noticeable change that MailButler makes to Mail when you first
open it is the addition of avatars for most senders. MailButler pulls
images from Contacts, Facebook, Flicker, Gravatar, Google+, and the web
to create the avatars. Each avatar includes a small icon indicating its
source. Most of the avatars in my inbox were pulled from the web and
many looked a little rough because they were not Retina graphics, but on
balance the feature worked well to help me identify senders at a glance.

(ā€¦)*

Would this be a solution / idea?

Vlad

[MlMt] Trigger words for attachment reminder

2016-01-23 Thread Vlad Ghitulescu

Hello!

One of MailMate's very useful features for me is the nice reminder of
forgotten attachments.

Writing emails also in other languages than English I wondered if
there's an editable list of *trigger words* for this very useful
feature.

And I'm not alone with this! ;-)

I found a similar approach in the previous cited article from MacStories
(*MailButler Adds New Tools to Apple Mail* -
https://www.macstories.net/reviews/mailbutler-adds-new-tools-to-apple-mail/):

*
(ā€¦)
Attachment Reminders

It's probably a safe bet that you have sent an email at some point and
forgotten to include an attachment. MailButler tries to anticipate your
intent to send a file based on keywords in your message. If it thinks
you forgot an attachment, MailButler pops up a reminder before sending
your message. In my tests, MailButler correctly identified 'attach' and
'attachment,' as keywords, but failed to prompt me for an attachment
when I typed "Here is the file we discussed." **Fortunately, you can add
your own keywords to MailButler's repertoire.**

(ā€¦)

[MlMt] Workaround for sending a link from Safari via MailMate

Hello!

After discovering that the default mail client vicious circle is
actually only an El Capitan - bug (see the thread *How to set MailMate
(once!) to be the default app for email* -
http://lists.freron.com/mailmate/2016-January/005526.html) I made a
Keyboard Maestro - macro as a sort of workaround in order to be able to
send the link of the current Safari-window / tab via MailMate.

I attach the macro - perhaps some of you could use it.

I'm using BBEdit as my text- and MailMate-editor, that's why I had to
consider this as well.

I triggered the KBM-macro via the same keyboard-shortcut as the default
Safari-keyboard-shortcut (muscle memory!).

What I would like to sync is basically smart mailboxes, key settings

There is (still) no way to do this. The best you can is to
ā€œmigrateā€ settings by copying `.plist` files from/to this folder:

~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/

Note that you must quit MailMate on both machines before doing this.
Only copy `Sources.plist`, `Submission.plist`, and `Identities.plist`
if you are starting over on the destination machine.

Other preferences are stored in this file (like all other OS X
applications):

~/Library/Preferences/com.freron.MailMate.plist

You should only copy that file if you are making a clean install.

Would it be possible to move the content of the folder
~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/ in - let's say -
~/Dropbox/Application Support/MailMate/ and then made a (symbolic) link

I have not tested if that works, but it definitely does ***not*** work

Does that mean that it would be possible to have *two installs of

Maybe. I haven't tested it and I don't officially support it. Even if
it works now it might not work in the future.

Also, it would be very slow and inefficient to synchronize the
database files via a cloud service.

Ok, I understand.
Then the current *official* answer is: There's no efficient and secure
way to access **one** database with more MailMate-clients,
simultaneously or not. One should let the local installed
MailMate-clients access the IMAP-server and not a central / cloud-based
copy of the Application Support - folder.

Why?

2. the number of the flagged messages from *all messages* and

Right now I get with the default settings

a) the number of unread messages from INBOX (hurray!) (red dot) and
b) the number of the flagged messages **from INBOX** (green dot)(see

Unfortunately I can only change the first (red dot) through the

Itā€™s a bit unusual, but you have to click the various radio buttons
at the left of the Counters preference pane to select which of the up

No, there's no way to do that. I'm assuming what you primarily want is
a more horizontally compact message list as seen in many other email
clients.

Something like that, yes. I would like to squeeze more of the
subject-line in the message-list by letting the other fields (From, To,

I don't oppose such a feature and it's on my list, but I cannot

It's good to know that's on your list.

Iā€™m also using the BBEdit command (but not automatically ā€” I use a

that you are taken to the same line in BBEdit as the cursor was on in

moving to it.

One way to stop this would be to edit the file:

Hmm.

ls -la | wc -l
 404
ls -la | bbedit +

puts the cursor on the last line of the file, a blank line in this
example.

Let's try a file which ends in a full line, but without at the
end:

bbedit +999 x.py # puts the cursor at the end of the last line.

FWIW, I've been using TextWrangler in a similar way for newsgroup
posts,
called by slrn. What I find there is that I want the cursor
positioned
at the beginning of the post body, so that I can start at the
beginning

text
plus my reply (possibly interleaved where answering more than one
point).

Yes TW does select the entire line, but that's not a problem when I'm
using the cursor keys to move down through the text before typing any

There's even a simpler solution!
Here directly from Bare Bones' technical support:

*(ā€¦)
When you pipe data via the 'bbedit' tool, BBEdit will by default place
the insertion point at the end of the piped data.
Alternatively, you can make BBEdit place the insertion point at the top
of file by including the '--view-top' parameter, or on any specific line
by using the + convention I mentioned before.

I can't speak for anyone else, only for myself.

That's also what I want to hear: I wanted to learn from people who think
different than myself regarding email. It must be a reson! ;-)

My archives go back to the mid-nineties. Since mail (generally)
compresses well and (server) disk space kept getting cheaper, I
decided a very long time ago that it's cheaper to keep everything than
to regularly evaluate what's relevant.

How often do you use / read those mid-nineties email messages now?
I still have the email messages from 2002, but live doesn't stop :-) so
I didn't take a glance of them since ages!

Not using my email app as a task manager (and delegating this to a

I also use a dedicated task manager now (OmniFocus).

Me too.

The problem with "somewhere else" is getting to it.

This is something that I also treasure and the email-archives are always
there where I intensively do email (not on the iPhone - but that's ok
for me, I can wait till I get home).

Even more: the archives are there even whitout an internet connection.

Simple connectivity is one thing, but also finding what I need.

See my previous message: MailSteward or HoudahSpot make that realy easy.

These days, it's usually pretty easy to find an internet connection
but MailMate's search features are a lot better than `find Maildir
-type f -mtime foo -exec grep -i mumble {} +`.

Oh, that sound fun too :-)

Surprisingly often!

I'm then a lot luckier: My archives grows bigger every year, but I
rarely (**very** rarely) search something older than three years.

Well, maybe not those from the nineties.

This is the chance to let them go! ;-)

(ā€¦)

Simple connectivity is one thing, but also finding what I need.

See my previous message: MailSteward or HoudahSpot make that realy
easy.

I hadn't heard of these until now.

MailSteward (http://www.mailsteward.com) worked just fine with Mail.app
for me - unfortunately not with MailMate, so I had to search for an
alternative. It makes a MySQL-database from the email messages and let
you search via an interface but also via *raw* sql-query if this strikes
your fancy. It can schedule archiving, support OS X tags etc.

HoudahSpot (https://www.houdah.com/houdahSpot/) uses Spotlight's
indexing for search, but it's a lot more powerful and convenient than
using Spotlight. I'm using this to search the archived email messages
from MailMate (they are eml-files in a Finder-folder). That's as quick
as MailSteward but let my email messages free from any proprietary
format (even if the eml-files - and their attributes - are generated by
MailMate while dragging them from MailMate into the Finder-folder). And
I'm using HoudahSpot already for searching & finding anything on my
iMac, so there is no supplementary effort involved :-)

I'm not terribly enthusiastic about spreading my email access across
different systems though.

That's a valid point!
But I think that Spotlight (w/o the confort of HoudahSpot) is secure
enough, don't you think?

Standardised IMAP "just works". Even if it means dragging a lot of
history around and stretching client data structures and indices to
their limits. :)

:-D
I can see the challenge, yes! Scaling is hard!

Thanks again for your thoughts!

[MlMt] Flagged-Mailbox shows unflagged message

2016-02-26 Thread Vlad Ghitulescu

Hello!

I have 10 flagged messages right now.

They appear all in the example mailbox "*Flagged*" and the counter of
the flagged messages shows 10 - everything is ok!

After unflagging one of the 10 messages the counter of the flagged
messages is updated immediately and shows 9 but the now un-flagged
message still appears in the "*Flagged*"-mailbox.

It's only after changing the view / showing another mailbox that this
un-flagged message don't appear anymore in the list of the flagged
messages.

Why doesn't the "*Flagged*"-mailbox update it's view immediately?

Thanks!

[MlMt] Workaround for moving the focus in the message-list to the message on the top / bottom / (even middle of the screen)

2016-02-29 Thread Vlad Ghitulescu

Hello!

Since I didn't get any suggestions on my original question ([How to move
the focus in the message-list to the message on the top / bottom / (even
middle of the screen)?][1]) I used KeyboardMaestro for this.

I didn't find any MailMate-commands to do this (similar to [Workaround
for sending a link from Safari via MailMate][2]) so I simply recorded
the clicks on the top / bottom / middle of the list of the messages (see
the attached KeyboardMaestro-MacroLibrary).

It's not elegant at all but it does what it should :-/
Perhaps some of you could also use something like this.

Now if I only could scroll the window with the messages-list to put this
now active message from the middle / bottom to the top of the window (or
from the top / middle to the bottom, or even from the top / bottom to
the middle! :-)ā€¦

Pressing CMD-R now makes a fast switch to another mailbox and back to

It's actually a sort of refresh, because it works only for the

That's tricky since there is no such thing as a default address book
application. Well, there is an `addressbook:` URL scheme, but that
seems to be for Contacts only (in theory, BusyContacts could
ā€œstealā€ it like MailMate does for `message:`, but I'm sure they
would have done that if it worked well).

Googling I found
[this](https://support.busymac.com/help/56235-busycontacts-url-handler#other).
BusyContacts supports a very similar URL scheme which should make it
relatively simple to do ā€œShow in Contactsā€. ā€œAdd to Contactsā€

LaunchBar use it too: Looking for a contact in LaunchBar now opens
