[Mailinglist] issue - PCLinuxOS 2007 not logging into GUI / Xserver

2008-05-16 Thread Zaheer Kozhakkaniyil
Dear all,

On my friend's laptop, PCLinuxOS GNOME edition live CD booted perfectly
in to the GNOME desktop. And after logging in, successfully installed it
on the system. But after installing, it is not logging in to the Xserver
/ GUI. The installed system boots well and then the Xserver tries some 2
- 3 times to log in and then comes to the help screen stating that X
cannot log in. Some error messages that come are:

1. 'PCI bus id' not found
2. '/dev/agpgart' not found
3. 'Video RAM' set too low?

Some rounds of troubleshooting we had:

1. tried replacing the installed system's xorg.conf with the liveCD's
xorg.conf file.
2. tried specifying an option of video RAM, when it asked for a
probability of low video RAM.
3. tried with the 'vesa' driver; default detected was 'intel' driver.
4. tried removing the 'ACPI' kernel option at boot time.
5. tried putting in the 'PCI bus' option.
6. tried changing the default resolution to 16bit 800x600; default in
the other OS is 24bit 1280x1024.
7. tried disabling the 'translucency' option.
8. tried disabling the 'DPMS' option.

Well, none of the above worked. What puzzles me is that the hardware is
fully supported, since the liveCD is booting in to the Xserver / GUI
without any issues; still it doesn't log in to Xserver when it is
installed. So what I thought was there would be some script / command
running while the liveCD is booting, whereas it is not enabled in the
installed version.

Does anybody have any clue as to what could be the possible reason for
this?

The laptop configuration is Intel Core 2 Duo processor with integrated
graphics, 2GB RAM etc.

[Mailinglist] issue - PCLinuxOS 2007 not logging into GUI / Xserver

2008-05-16 Thread unni krishnan
Hi,

First of all am using ubuntu, never used PCLinux at all, so dont know what
is the file layout of that OS. What i am going to say is on the basis of
ubuntu linux .. Just try it.

In most cases X server error will be obtained from /var/log/messages. You
are saying that you are not able to loggin to X server, so i am hopping that
you can get the command prompt. Just switch to tty1 in ubutu Alt+Ctrl+F1
will do that. Hope you can login to that prompt.

In that prompt just try
#startx -- :2
That will start X server, if there any error that will be printed on the
screen. Also in /var/log/messages .

Just send that full error reprt, so that i can help you.

Thank you

[Mailinglist] issue - PCLinuxOS 2007 not logging into GUI / Xserver

Can you try disabling the framebuffer? Like "vga=none" option as the kernel
parameter.

It's Core2 Duo right? Has anyone checked i965 chipset with X? It could be
some trouble with not detecting the correct video chipset. I believe you can
access the CLI. What does 'lspci -vv' say?

BTW, is it the latest version of PCLinuxOS?

/dev/agpgart not found, means it is having trouble allocating video ram. One
possible trouble could be X was instructed to display using kernel framebuffer.
I'm sorry, I don't currently have an access to my Linux box, but you can read
xorg.conf(5) and disable display of X through kernel framebuffer.

I remember once installing IT at School GNU/Linux (forgot the version), and in
the
end it asked me (after detecting X and all), whether to enable display through
kernel framebuffer. I consented, and that caused me a 3-day of
trouble-shooting

Try and run memcheck86 -- just to see that your RAM is ok.

I guess that might be the problem.. not sure though.

No worries,

Mahesh Aravind

[Mailinglist] issue - PCLinuxOS 2007 not logging into GUI / Xserver

2008-05-16 Thread Priyadarsan Roy
Hi,

In addition to what Unni recommends you can also try this if it still does not
work.

After logging in to the console via Ctrl + Alt + F1 run the command

#Xorg -configure

Observer the last few lines that come as output to know if it
did everything properly. If everything went fine you will get a
file in /root/xorg.conf.new(expecting you run this command as root)

To test if this file will work with the X server you can issue the command
#X -config /root/xorg.conf.new

If X works fine you can copy this as /etc/X11/xorg.conf and use to start X.

Hope this helps,
PD

[Mailinglist] [OT] The Prize of Freedom... is...?

2008-05-16 Thread Mahesh Aravind
Dear fellow Linuxers,

This doesn't do anything with Linux, GNU, or "open source". But this is about
freedom -- personal freedom.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/may/15/computing.security

What would do if a similar law exists in India? Or if you're a traveler to US
(with laptop, of course)?

Would you surrender your private data, or would you stand up and protest? I'm
curious...

Gawd, who gives a green flag to "laws" like these?

/. have a lengthy discussion on this.

[Mailinglist] issue - PCLinuxOS 2007 not logging into GUI / Xserver

2008-05-16 Thread Jos Collin
Hi,

I don't know whether this reply will help you or not.

I use Debian/Lenny on my Thinkpad. I had the same issue when I specify
'intel' driver (My display card is Intel mobile GM965) in xorg.conf
As you told the live CD's were working perfectly, even with wrong driver
setting in xorg.conf.

The issue is resolved automatically when I get the latest
'xserver-xorg-video-intel' package.

Jos Collin

[Mailinglist] Microsoft plans to limit Linux on low-cost PCs

2008-05-16 Thread Jos Collin
Even if Microsoft plan to make Windows as a free operating system, I don't
think it is a good idea to use it in our PC's. They have to change the OS
design to standard ones (micro or monolithic), which is impossible at this
stage. Microsoft decided to follow this design for the sake of marketing.
