accessible home library cataloging apps for the mac?

2012-03-14 Thread johns.kary
Hi guys,
Does anyone know of any accessible book cataloging apps for the mac?
I've got a huge amount of ebooks and audio books in various places I'd like to
catalog. I've tried bookster and book collector, but neither seam completely
accessible.
Preferably I'd like one that has a companion iPhone app, but it's not essential.

Thanks for any help.
Kari.

strange result when running a repair disk permissions, anyone no what it means?

2011-06-21 Thread johns.kary
Hi guys,
I did a repair disk permissions tonight, because I haven't done one for a
while, and my MBP has been running quite hot all day. In the list of repairs
 I got the message.

warning: SUID file system library
/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDA/Agent" has
been modified and will not be repaired.
The repair finished with no problems, and my mac doesn't seam to be running as
hot, the fan hasn't kicked in for a while now. But does anyone no what this
message means?
Thanks Kari.

2011-06-21 Thread johns.kary
Hi Zack,
Thanks, that makes sense when I think about it.
I figgured it couldn't be anything to major when it finished the repair with
no problem and my mac started to cool down strait after I ran the repair, and
has been perfectly fine ever since.
I wouldn't have even noticed that message if I hadn't checked the list of
repairs at just the rite time.

Thanks for the help.
Kari.

2011-06-23 Thread johns.kary
Hi Jonathan and all.
Thanks for all this help.
All my software and everything is up to date, so why this is showing up is
still a mystery.
I ran another permissions repair just before just out of curiosity,. The same
message showed up which I'm not to worried about now, but I got another one on
a java file, something about it being named or labelled incorrectly.
So now I'm getting rather confused.

Mac book pro running very hot

2011-06-28 Thread johns.kary
Hi guys,

I've got a strange problem hear, and I'm really hoping it's software not hard
ware.

A couple of days ago my Mac book pro started running hot, the fan would kick
in a short time after start up, and would pretty much run constantly from
there until I shut down again.
Now, it's the middle of winter hear in Australia, so the temperature hardly
get's above 20 Celsius, Even with the heater going my lounge-room is
definitely not hot enough to up set the MBP.
I checked all the usual culprits, Things I'd forgotten to remove from the
finder, apps running in the background, ect, no deal it still happened.

I ran a permissions repair, worked for about a day, then started all over again.

So I went deeper and had a look at the activity monitor.
Most things are running at 0.0 or or not much higher, except for one.
Something called "applespell.service" was varying between 84 and 99%.
I quit it, and it went back to 0.0 and my MBP immediately started cooling down.
A short while later it started heating up again and the fan cut in and
remained on again. I went back and checked, and sure enough
applespell.service" was running at 99%. Once again I quit, and things cooled
down again. It's been running at 0.0 for a bit over an hour now, the Mac is
a lot cooler, and the fan hasn't kicked in once. So I'm assuming I've found my
problem. The thing is it seams to be reoccurring frequently.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on hear? Do you guys think I've found
the problem, or am I completely off the mark?

I'd really like to fix this my self, not only for the satisfaction, but my
nearest apple store is an hour and a half away, and finding transport for that
long a trip can be tricky at best. :).

Thanks in advance for any thoughts-help.

A very! frustrated,
Kari.
Ps all software is up to date.

Update on mac running hot, from bad to worse!

2011-06-28 Thread johns.kary
Hi guys,
Well things seam to have gone from bad to worse!
My mac has been working fine all last night and most of to day, with
applespell.service consistently running at 0.0. So I thought my troubles were
over. No such luck!

I wasn't paying very close attention, so I'm not 100 % sure when it started
running hot again, but i'd say it's probably just the last hour it's been
heating up again. I've had my mac running since 9 this morning so it's been on
probably 4 and a half hours ruffly. Not always in use either.
As soon as I noticed I went and checked and sure enough, my old friend
applespell.service was running at 85.4

This is wear I ran in to real trouble, quitting or force quitting the process
is now having no affect! I can't get it to run at anything below80.

I've been monitoring it for a while now and I thought I'd post the details hear
on the off chance someone can see something in them I'm missing.

Parent process, launched 127, process group applespell.service 524, % CPU:
80.87, recent hangs: 0, threads:2, page ins: 0, ports: 44, mach messages in:
20410, CPU time: 29:15:29, mach messages out: 43623, context switches: 52211,
mach system calls: 32307, Faults: text, UNIX system calls: 2831336.

The only programs I've had running most of the time is safari, Mail and text
edit.

Thanks for any more thoughts, I guess my next move is to contact apple. *sigh*
Kari.

Vo not remembering my place in text edit, or scrolling to specific points in documents.

2011-07-21 Thread johns.kary
Hi guys,

I updated to lion last night, and now in text edit it won't move to a point in
a document or remember my place.
If I wanted to move to a specific point in a document I used to just be able to
do CMD F type in the word I was looking for and it would jump to that point.
Now if I do that or even scroll through using the aero keys, it says what the
cursorsmoving over, but as soon as I try to read from that point with VO A
or even just the up down aero keys, it jumps strait back to the top of the
document. Same thing if I move out of text edit with CMD tab and come back,
it's incredibly frustrating!

I've been through the VO utility, and everything that should be checked seams
to be, but it has been quite a while since I've had to have anything to do with
those settings so I could quite easily be forgetting something.

Can anyone shed some light on this? It's making life tricky to say the least.
:)
Thanks,
Kari.

searching for mail in lion with classic layout

2011-07-30 Thread johns.kary
Hi guys,
How do you search for an email in the new mail using the classic layout?

In SL all you had to do was type the search in the search box. That seams to
have been removed in lion, and cmd F brings up a search feature that doesn't
seam to do anything.

Can anyone help?

And I do apologise in advance if I don't reply or thank someone, I haven't
quite got the hang of the new mail yet, so I am missing some emails if my inbox
is over full. As it is at the moment! lol.
Thanks,
Kari.

adium not working under lion

2011-08-01 Thread johns.kary
Hopefully this will be the last question. lol

Ever since I've installed lion, adium has refused to work.
Wen I try to open adium I get the message, "adium has quit unexpectedly"
I've googled it, and haven't found a lot on the problem.
There was nothing that I've seen to say that adium was one of the apps that was
incompatible with OS lion.
Any one having this problem or no what's going on?

Thanks,
Kari.

Re: adium not working under lion

2011-08-01 Thread johns.kary
Hi tammy,
I've just got it working again.
I had tried reinstalling it a couple of times a few days ago with no success,
I deleted and reinstalled it again last night with the same result.
But I gave it one more shot this morning after reading that you had no problems
with it, and fore some strange reason in worked perfectly, and is still working
perfectly.
So absolutely no idea what happened there, but at least it's working again.
Thanks for your help,

Re: bookshare books

2010-08-26 Thread johns.kary
I just tryed it with a bookshare book, and yes it does read it.
Not so well as a full audio daisy book though.
I've only tried it once though, so it's more then possible I'm doing something
wrong. (smile)
Maybe someone else with the app can try it, and hopefully get a better result.
I'll keep playing and see what I get to.

voiceover saying programs have no focus

2010-09-02 Thread johns.kary
hope someone can help hear, because I'm completely stumped.
I've tried to installl a couple of programs lately on my mac, but once the
programs running all I can get voiceover to say is, "program has no windows"
or sometimes "program has no focus"
When a program does this, no matter what I do I cant get it to do or say
anything else.
Can anyone tell me what I need to do to fix this?
Thanks in advance,
Kari.

Try Macgormate,

The Mac app is a bit pricy, but the iPhone app is free and both are completely

I absolutely love it, so handy to just pull out my iPhone in the kitchen,
check an ingredient or step in a recipe with out having to go to my laptop all
the time.
Happy cooking. :)

Can't open bookshare XML files anymore

Hi guys,
I used to read and convert Bookshare books by, opening the XML file in safari

I tried this today and now when I open the XML file it gives me some page

the same thing.
Anyone no what's going on? and how to fix it?
The only thing I can think of is I've installed lion since I last did it, can't
see how that would have effected it though.

Thanks heaps for any help, I really need to get these books open.

Thanks,

Hovercam T5V does it work well on the mac?

Hi guys,

I'm in the market for a new scanner, it has to work with docuScan though.
Has anyone tried and liked the Hovercam T5V?
What quality of scan do you get compared to a flatbed scaner?

It's a little more pricy then I was looking to pay, but if it's worth it I'd
consider it.
I'd like some unbiased opinions first though.
Thanks for any thoughts

Is the blindmicemart site no longer mac accessible?

2011-09-30 Thread johns.kary
Hi guys,

Does anyone know what's going on with the blindmicemart movie volt site?
I can't access it at all on my mac.
I don't have access to a window's computer at the moment to try that.
Anyone know what's going on?

Thanks,
Kari.

Moveing over to iCloud, but can't get past mobileMe sign in page.

2011-10-14 Thread johns.kary
Hi guys,
possibly this has been asked, but to be honest I just don't have the time at
the moment to trawl through emails to see.
I'm trying to move over to iCloud, I get to the mobileMe sign in page, sign in
with my mobileMe details, get a page with all my contacts, and that's it.
How do I get to the next step? This thing is driving me mad!

Thanks for any help,
Kari.

Ok, what am I missing hear?
I go to the blndmicemart webpage and all I get is how to contact them and
nothing else.
I google the blind mice mart movie volt, and I get a page saying the movies
have been uploaded to sendspace, but no movies are listed on the page.
It says for our member's but there's no way to be come a member that I can see.
What's going on? am I missing something?
It's been an exceptionally long frustrating day, so it's entirely possible
the problem's all me, and I'm missing something very obvious. :)

I've had a quick play, and it looks excellent.
Now, like the iDevice app store, to work out which apps are going to be

I wonder if maybe there could be a section created on applevis for mac apps?

I have a suspicion that like the iDevice app store, the mac app store
will become somewhat of an addiction for me. :),

When I put one in and it opens, it comes up with a image list, and I can't get

Do I need another program or something to play them with voiceover?

Can't get airport express to join wireless network, help please?

2011-02-05 Thread johns.kary
Hi guys,
I'm having trouble setting up my airport express, hear's the steps I'm
following, if anyone has any suggestions what do do I'll be most grateful.

I'm trying to get the airport express to join my existing netgear wireless
network.
I've installed the CD that came with the airport express on my iMac,
connected the ethernet cable to the airport express, and launched airport
utility.

The initial setup of finding, naming and password protecting the express goes
flawlessly.
The next step it says "select what you wan't to do with airport express" I
select "I wan't airport express to join my currantnetwork"

The next step says, "select what you wan't airport express to do" I select
"I wan't airport express to wirelessly join my currant network"
The next step, choose the wireless network you would like airport express to
use" Netgear is selected, the next thing on this window is wireless security,
My wireless network is password protected so the options I have are "none, WEP
40 bit, WEP128 bit, WEP transitional security network, WPa WPA2 personal, and
wpa2 personal" I'm not Sure which to use so I've tried both WPa WPA2 personal,
and wpa2 personal" I get the same result in the end.
I then enter my netgear password, and hit continue.
It asks me if the settings are correct and I press update. It then says "this
device and it's network serviceswill be temporarily unavailable" I press
continue.

It updates and restarts, then I get a message, "problem 1 of 1, this wireless
airport express is setup to join a specific wireless net work that can't be
found, If you don't see the network in the network name popup menu enter the
network name and password if necessary to try again. The network name and
passwords are correct, so I press continue, I get the message, :do you wan't to
continue with out resolving this problem? Click ignore to prevent your airport
expresses status light from blinking amber for this problem"
I then have the options "skip, cancel or ignore" I haven't gotten any further
then this.

Can anyone tell me what's going on and how to get it to join my existing
network?

I can't use my wireless internet while the airport express is pluged in, I
have to unplug it for my netgear network to work again.

Can any one help?
 Thanks Kari.

Hi,
If by connecting by ethernet you mean connecting the ethernet cable to the
airport express and in airport utility selecting the option to setup with
ethernet connection, I've tried that.
It just sits there saying busy.

VO will only say safari busy, safari ready on mobile facebook site?

2011-02-18 Thread johns.kary
Hi lister's,
For the last week or so every time I try to read comments, event invites or
practically anything other then the home page on m.facebook.com, vo just keeps
saying safari busy, safari ready. It just keeps looping around and around
till I move away from that page. The main page of m.facebook.com works with
no problem, but nothing beyond it. I haven't noticed any other webpages
doing this.

Is anyone else having this problem? if not any idea what I can do to fix it?

It's incredibly frustrating not being able to read FB comments.
Thanks for any thoughts,
Kari.

Re: fried google

2011-02-22 Thread johns.kary
strangely it's apple mail doing this with my optus account .
My gmail's working fine. but When ever I go to check my optus inbox it's,
"please enter your password for this account"
It only started yesterday, and it's slowly getting worse. Along with safari
going in to an endless "safari busy safari ready" Loop on some pages.

All my mail accounts work fine on my iPhone and windows laptop, It just seams
to be apple mail having problems.

Re: Very annoying "Safari Busy" message

2011-03-04 Thread johns.kary
I've been having this problem for a couple of weeks now on the Facebook mobile
site.
It's become almost impossible to read comments let alonepost a comment
for me.
Most of the time I just give up and use my iPhone or iPad for Facebook at the
moment.

I wonder if it's worth contacting apple over?
Maybe Facebook to, although as far as I'm concerned facebook have never seamed
to concerned with accessibility problems before.

I was just on the Facebook mobile site and clicked the "delete" button
on a message in my inbox. After I clicked the button, Voiceover began
saying "Safari busy" whenever I tried to press a key. It did this for
at least a minute, sometimes saying "Safari ready" and then "Safari
busy" again a second or two later. I have had this problem once or
twice before, but this was the first time I have had it consistently.
I turned my Mac off, took it home, and tried to delete another message
only to encounter the same problem. Could anyone tell me why these
"Busy" messages are used? I've never encountered anything like this
on an iPhone, iPad or PC.

 Thanks in advance.

adium not working with facebook chat?

2011-03-10 Thread johns.kary
Hi list.
It's more then possible I've missed discussions on this, but I'm way! behind on
email.

Using adium with Facebook chat, I'm receiving friends initial
messages, but nothing after that.
There not getting any replies I send, and I don't get all there messages either.

One friend told me I kept going on and off line, although on my end it still
said I was online.

MSN still seams to work with adium although occasionally a message will go
astray.
Does anyone no what might be going on hear?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Kari.

Adium fb chat constantly asking for plaintext authentication?

2011-03-13 Thread johns.kary
Hi guys,

I sent an email to this list a couple of days ago asking for help on Facebook
and adium not working.
I got a really helpful email from Thomas.

I followed those instructions to set up Facebook with adium using jabber, but
now when ever I try to choose the available status for fb chat it gives me the
message.
requires plaintext authentication over an unencrypted connection. Allow this
and continue authentication?

If I choose yes, it just does the same thing over and over again. If I choose
no, it cancels .

Anyone no what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks again for any help.
Kari.
