Hi Wayne,

When powering your machine back on, hold down command+r for a couple of minutes
to be certain you are going to boot into recovery mode. Then release the keys
and wait. You won’t have speech automatically here so what I usually do while
waiting is to try and activate voiceover with command+f5. If voiceover comes
on, it means I’m in the recovery mode. There you will find a table with
options. I think the last option in the table is disk utility. Position
voiceover cursor on it and continue. Once in disk utility you should be able
to find terminal in disk utility menu with the usual vo+m key combination.
Hope I can remember this right.

Good luck

Is this a video DVD or is it just files on a data DVD? If it's just
files then you can copy them like any other files. If it's video then
it's a little more work as the copy has to be formatted as a DVD with
everything just so.

Well, if it's just pictures and not video you can create a new folder on
your hard drive, open up the DVD, do a select-all (Command-A), copy
(command-c), navigate to your new folder, then paste (command-v). That
should copy everything from the DVD to your hard drive. Then you can
reverse the process for the new DVD.

I haven't seen any replies to this yet; doesn't anyone out there use
daisy books on either IOS or mac? Particularly on IOS devices? I don't
think Read to Go is viable enough. Can't use it with VO nor read with
Braille. If not, then is there a way we could get a daisy book to run
in iBook? That is probably a long shot for sure.

Any ideas here???

if your printer has a built in wireless interface then brilliant, you're up
and running. use the installer CD that comes with your printer to install
all the software. then from there it will help you connect to the printer
wirelessly, that's of course depending on the software CD. please could you
give me a model number of the printer?

as soon as your drivers are installed, etc. you will need to go to system
preferences, then go to printers and fax. in this window, add the printer.
if you're using just 1 or 2 machines, use the IP version of the printer, if
you're connecting from a long distance, etc then bonjour connection can be
used. either way just make sure it's the printer. ah you said 3 in one. fair
enough lol oops.

when the printer is added you should be fine and dandy.

please!

Hi to all, over the past couple of years I have been listening to a bbc
station called radio 4 extra. It is a station for "Comedy Drama and
entertainment." During this time when going to the main site.
www.bbc.co.uk/radio4extra
and finding the Schedule link which then takes you that current day's shows.

On that particular Schedule page, I was able to find the next and previous
day's so then what I would do if that if I miss a programme, I was then able
to access it with I Player. This would become in real handy for when I miss
a programme because I went to college or had to go somewhere etc.
Well to cut to the chase, during this week, at some point I am now unable to
find the previous or next day links which basically means I can't access an
earlier show or I want to see what's coming up next.
Basically could all you screen reader users comferm this and I don't care if
you use windows or mac because I tried it with NVDA and that still didn't
find me what I wanted on the windows side having 1st tried it with voiceover
on my Mac.

If this is the case, what do you advise to do because I'm stumpt as to how
to get this previous functionality back.

again the link is www.bbc.co.uk/radio4extra
once on the main page find the Schedule link and that's the place where I'm
stuck.

Hope to hear from you all soon!

Thanks

Daniel

I think that there's actually a podcast about this on applevis. I saw
something that had the title "What's new in Mountain lion, the new spotlight
menu with voiceover" or something for that effect. I thought i should look
at it, but forgot it and then i installed mountain lion and i haven't had a

It should already be set to alert you. Remember though, it isn't going to

To verify the settings though, go to system prefs, then software update.

Subject: Seaking Purchase advice on IPhone car kit

My grandmother has a Hyunda, but trust me, it doesn't have bluetooth
ability, nor does it have auxiliary input. All she's got is A M/FM/Sirius
XM, Plus a 6 disc dashboard loading CD changer. I can't remember what year
it is, but it's not exactly old old old, but it's not new by any stretch
either. I think it's like a 2005, or a 2006, somewhere in that
neighborhood.

Anyway, she does have a cigarette lighter charger port. So, I'm wonderring

if anyone may know of a good FM transmitter that I could use for my IPhone
4S 16GB black, through AT&T which would let me transmit to an FM frequency
which I then could tune her radio to, then listen to my IPhone in the car.
We go out practically 2 or 3 times a week for lunch, then of corse, there's
the times I have doctor appointments, etc. so I'd love! to be able to listen

to my music, or Pandora, etc. over something a little better than the
internal IPhone speaker. Don't get me wrong, the internal speaker is
incredible! I mean it blows the IPod Touch 3GS and 4G both totally! out of
the water, but it's still not the same as going through a full car stereo by

any means.

I had a little birdy butt transmitter I bought a while back for my old IPod
Nano 4th Gen, way back in the days, which costed about 50 bucks, or so, and
basically what you had was this little dinky dank thing that plugged into
the cigarette lighter charger... obviously, I don't literally mean the
cigarette lighter... I'm not stupid... LOL! I mean the charger port thing
that looks like a lighter port. You're probably lookin at me go yeah yeah
yeah, I gotcha, I know I know, don't worry. LOL! Anyway, so one end
plugged in there, then the other end basically was just a cord that plugged
into the 8th inch or as some would call it 3.5MM stereo jack on the
IPod/IPhone, or whatever had an earphone jack. I found that thing didn't
work really well, as for one, the IPhone never was stationary, as nothing
held it still. It just kind a sat there either on my lap, or whatever,
sometimes in the little glasses compartment. I found that the slightest
movement would make the thing fade out though and give a bit of static over
the transmition. It was really really annoying.

My dad had one that I think he paid about $100 to maybe $130 bucks for,
somewhere around there, and if my mom still has it, I may try it out, as
that sucker worked incredibly! The sound was so crystal clear, it was
unbelievable! The only issue with it is, I dont' think an IPod Touch nor an

IPhone would fit in the thing. I think it only held the 4th and 5th gen
Nanos. My dad actually got the thing back when the 4th gen Nanos were
really hot on the market, so it's pretty old. What I like about it though
is, you plugged it in, then it had this metal rod looking arm that protruded

out of the thing that you could swivvle around so that it would either face
more toward the driver, or the passenger, or it could just be straight dead
centered. The other end of it oppisit from the plug, literally was a
cradling docking station. So it had, from what I remember, 3 buttons. One
to go up in frequency, and one to move it down, plus it had an auto-scan
where you push that, and it would scan for the first available frequency
with no sound/static. Then you had the cradle where you basically literally

docked the IPod/whatever into. That pretty well obviously held it still,
plus, like i said, the sound was just out of this world amazing! I don't
think I remember even once that the thing staticked nor faded.

I need to look to see if my mom kept it. I doubt she did, as most of the
stuff in his car I think got sold, after he passed away. If it would hold
the IPhone, and we could find it, my issue will be solved, but does anyone
know any good cigarette lighter based car FM transmitters I could use? I'm
willing to spend say no less than $100 and maybe no more than $150. $150
would be on the high end for me though. I'll do it, but that would be
pushing it. For that cost, it darn well better be good. LOL! Would prefer

something which actually docks, not something that would use the earphone
jack, although if you can promise me it would have good results, I'll try
it. I have an open mind.

Chris.

Yes i did and if you had gone to amazon and done the search you will
find one that tunes in to a radio frequency and then the music from the
iphone or any apple device will come through the speakers and the device is
on amazon because i got one for my son so just look for the radio
transmitters and i think it was around 20 dollers but don't quote me on that
price but it was close to that price hope this helps

That's not what I need.

Did you actually read my e-mail? My grandmother doesn't have bluetooth
ability.

The only way we can interface this is via cigarette lighter based plug. She

doesn't have bluetooth, nor does she have an auxiliary input nor a USB
input.

This is why it needs to be an FM, not bluetooth transmitter, and needs to
interface through her cigarette lighter.

Chris.

Hi Neil.

Occasionally I use HSBC Internet Banking (However not tried it in ML) yet.
When doing it with Lion, when getting to the tables for interactions or if
to transfer money or to pay a payee, I'd do vo down arrow to go down rather
than across as at times that worked. I've not had too much luck with HSBC
internet banking but haven't tried it in ML yet. The website works better
under Jaws as they designed it with jaws in mind. Mind you I tried Fast
Balance (an application for the I phone) as it's separate to Business
Banking and when I spoke to the Internet Team about this they said they were
working on a fix as it was not accessible yet with Voice Over but they would
not give me a date to when it would be fixed.

Hi,

If you have your devices syncing through iCloud, as you fix them on the
iPhone, they will fix the related items within iCloud. Similarly, if you
fix these items on your Mac in AddressBook, they will automatically be fixed
on your iPhone. You can confirm this by going to the other device and
checking it. That is, if you did the corrections on the iPhone,, just go to
your Mac and take a look in AddressBook and the same items should also be
fixed there. Again, this only is relevant if you have the same iCloud
account on both devices and you have Contact syncing turned on.

HTH.

 Listers,

It seems as though blindcooltech.com is no longer accepting new
podcasts and sending them out. Over the last few years I've learned a
great deal from this resource and even posted a few podcasts. I first
learned about the Victor Reader stream on this podcast, and as a result
was reading audio books long before the US library service provided
machines. Thanks to this podcast I learned tricks on the National Library
Service machines that make them excellent for studying with audio books
and podcasts. The set up was great because it provided a single place for
multiple providers to donate demonstrations of technology for other
visually impaired persons. The diversity of content and providers was
 great.

So, Where can I now post a podcast for you folks that might be interested
in technology? What feeds are you folks using? I'm especially interested
in those podcasts provided by users who are sharing their knowledge.
It is nice to subscribe to one feed that provides content from many
people. It would be less productive to subscribe to multiple individual
feeds. Further, I am glad to create podcasts but don't have the knowledge
or desire to maintain my own site or podcast feed.

I hope there is a feed out there that provides this service now that
blindcooltech.com is not. Please share your suggestions.

Hi Eleanor,

This is the first chance I have had to open the app. I hope you have read the
help info that is documented in the app. There are so many settings that you
can select to make the experience of using Blind Square to your liking.

To answer yourquestion about using Google Maps, this needs to be install on the
phone first. When you open Blind Square, you can search for a location or open
your "My Places" to select a destination. Once this is done, at the bottom of
the screen in portrait mode you will hear VO annouce "route" or something like
that. Double tap on this and a new screen will open. This is where you can
choose the navigation apps for GPS. The native map will be listed, as well as
any GPS apps that you have installed. Just double tap on one of them and the
GPS app will open. You then need to use the GPS app as if you had opened it on
its own. There are lots to learn about the app. I know that at applevis.com
there have been podcasts produce on how to use the app. I would do a search for
"Blind Square" to pull them up. HTH.

RE: super duper

hello yes I do to and find it easy to use and it covers all I need

Subject: Re: super duper

I myself have not used carbon, but i do use SuperDuper.

Regarding your Partitions

You’re going to have a problem if you want to use Time Machine (TM) and
SuperDuper together.

Time Machine requires a partition of it’s own, or at least, 1 partition that
isn’t being used by anything else. The format of your TimeMachine partition is
fine, though you’ll have to either put your TM backup on another hard drive, or
not use Time Machine, period.

Booting from Super Duper is fine. It’s essentially considered another startup
disk, just as your Mac’s internal hard drive would be. Select your backup drive
in startup disk prefs, and click on restart. The Mac will boot off of your
SuperDuper disk like nothing happened.

hard Drive Space

SuperDuper images take up the size of your Mac’s Drive. So, if your Mac has a
1TB drive, it’s suggested you devote 1 partition of say a 2 partitioned drive
to Super Duper, that has at least 1TB. If you don’t, SuperDuper won’t back up
correctly.

There is a feature of Super Duper called Smart Update. Smart Update updates
what hasn’t been updated, and wastes no time trying to back up the entire
drive. It erases the partition you told it to copy to, and makes it like your
internal drive is. Meaning, whatever structure your internal mac HD has, that’s
what your external drive’s partition will look like, with the exception of,
SuperDuper is making that 1 partition bootable.

One Thing To Note

Warning! - Don’t Copy Files Manually To The Bootable Partition

If SuperDuper makes a backup, do not attempt copying files direct to the
partition. You’ll screw the partition up and make it not boot. Even if you went
into startup disk, once you copy files manually to the partition, you’ll mess
up the fact that the disk was ever bootable. For you to solve this problem, the
permanent fix would be for you to use SuperDuper’s smart update, which will
remake the disk bootable, based upon changed data on your Mac’s internal hD.

I hope my explaining helps you in a wise choice in what to buy.

I don’t have a direct answer for you but have a few things you could check.
The first thing I would try is to put your screen reader in key describe mode
to ensure you are hitting the alt key. The alt key would be the option key
unless you’ve mapped it to something else. There are other things to check
depending on how you have configured fusion.

Subject: Re: vm fusion

If you can configure your screen reader to use the insert key as its modifier
key, than there is an easy solution in Fusion settings. you can set a key, (I
and many others use the grave accent key), and have fusion send the VM an
insert key whenever you press your selected key.

JAWS and NVDA can be set to use the insert key instead of the caps lock key for
example.

In these cases, you don’t even need a key remap program like sharpkeys, you
just set fusion to send insert key instead of the selected key.

Again, this is the simplest way I know of. I currently use Sharpkeys to swap
the grave accent key with the caps lock key, but I’ve also used fusion settings
to send the insert key instead of the grave accent and set JAWS to use insert.
Works both ways.

What screen reader are you using, and why do you want to use the right alt key?
that would be a difficult if not impossible swap to make in the fusion settings
way.

Hi!
I think someone had this problem a while back but i can’t remember the
sollution.
All of a sudden audio has disappeared from the internal speakers.
I don’teven have the startup sound when starting my mac.
Connecting headphones gets audio through the headphones but evrytime i unplug
them audio stops working.
This is no big deal for me but its a bit annoying to have to use headphones
evrytime using my mac.
This is a mac mini mid 2011.
Ofcourse i have been trying plugging and unplugging headphones and also checked
whether my audio is set to 0 but its not.
I will dig through this really but if someone has ideas i’d appreaciate them.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Wayne, I don't know that much about vpn. But from what I've heardit
hides your ip address and you can tell it what country you live in.
Then you always look like you're surfing from whatervercountry you
picked. It doesn't have to be your actual location. So, with a vpn you
probably could watch UK tv.
Hope this helps! Jeff

hello thanks but I know nothing about vpn so all I would want is to be able to

don’t have a clue I would like something simple to use and not to pricey so

I use Golden Frog. They are expensive, but they’re very fast. They seem to be
affiliated with GigaNews, which goes some way to explaining their coverage and
speed. I also love their online control panels which really give you the edge.
The downside (there’s always a downside) is that their iOS app is absolutely
dreadful. Since I only need PPTP for geoblock avoidance and
anti-mobile-provider-DPI avoidance and since the server names are all very easy
to derive, this is fine with me, because every OS supports PPTP. The basic
account is perfectly adequate for my needs, and when I’ve got a server set up
at home, even that may no longer be necessary.

Hope it helps.

Hi, Just to revisit this topic… I’ve been reading about Cloak VPN. Its $2.99
per month and was written especially for the mac and IOS. It has been written
up as the best of the year by several mac magazines. And apparently after you
download their app you simply hit one button and sign in and tyhat’s it.They
also have a 30-day trial. I’m going to give a shot and I’ll let you knwo how I
make out.

Well, I guess Cloak is out! It was easy to sign up for the free trial and
install the software and from there it went downhill. I launched the app, it
came up and disappeared, and a little banner at the top of my apps list said
Cloak wanted to make changes and type my system password. I typed the first
letter of my password and OSX took me to the app that started with that letter.
I can’t figure out where to type my password, so I guess the search continues.

Hi there.

I think you’d better inform yourself how this stuff works. Happily, there just
_happens_ to be a book on the subject, by a person that just _happens_ to be on
this list, and that just _happens_ to be targeted at the blind/VI, from Mosen
Consulting. It is paid, but it’s a great listen. Details here:
http://mosen.org/index.php/audiobook-imagine-theres-no-countries/

As to the legality claim, I think it’s best to take a wild guess, take a risk,
or check with your council. Certainly you are going against the wishes of the
Copyright holder; for the UK, the content is only for consumption by
licence-fee payers. I don’t agree with the author that geoblock avoidance is
that different from piracy, but I also heartily agree that it’s a very good
idea. The Internet is meant to be global, and if you can reach the content, I
think you’re entitled to it. Most VPN services are specifically targeted to
solving your problem; they let you connect to a server in the target country,
and essentially route your traffic by way of that server, hence giving you
access to material that is supposedly restricted to that region.

Have fun!

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Hello,

I wanted to draw your attention to HideMyAss VPN which is easy to configure on
the PC, MaC, IOS, I haven't tried it on Android. There is one argument for ease
of configuration vs. manual: If you wish to quickly switch between countries,
say, to stream German television and then switch to a UK IP for a BBC stream,
this can easily be done.

Finally, I have a question: For those who have tried both HideMyAss and Golden
Frog, how do they compare?

Golden Frog VyprVPN are a bit on the expensive side, yes. You definitely get
what you pay for, though you will have to configure things manually if you want
to avoid the inaccessible iOS app. But it’s really quite easy to do that on iOS
and Mac; both support PPTP and L2TP+IPSec.

For anybody who wants to go for it, my affiliate link (free month service for
both of us) is:

It's well worth it! I along with about 5 of my other blind friends, both

Subject: Re: vpn service

Team,

There is a difference between VPN and hiding your IP address. Unblocks is a
service that you can use to hide your address. You point your DNs to their
server and this is all you have to do. It is about $5.00 per month USA. This is
how I gain access to information on the net that blocks my IP address due to
location.

VPN’s will encrypt your traffic from your PC to the VPN server. Then it will
route the traffic unencrypted to the destination site if it is not on the VPN.

So be careful on what you want to achieve. If you want to just gain access to
content from TV providers and the like. Unblocks is the way to go.

The easiest thing is probably a USB sound card. They can get quite small, and
should work well enough. Are you certain the jack has died, though, and not
just been muted? Remember that audio levels for speakers will be different from
headphones, so it's possible for the internal speakers to work but for the
headphones to not be making noise at all.

Hey Wayne. If you're not in a rush, I would hold off on installing Windows 10
especially with Fusion. According to this article from Cool Blind Tech, some
features of Windows 10 including Microsoft's new Edge browser aren't accessible
with most screen readers except for the current NVDA beta. So it's a question
of do you really need Windows 10 right now? Because if you don't, I'd suggest
waiting until all the bugs have been ironed out.

So I finally got to the payment screen on the VMware website and I didn't get a
discount but the order didn't go through as there was a server error on their
site. So I wish VMware would get their act together if they wanted people to
buy their products.

I'm not sure if anyone has ever heard of/used one of these, I never had
until someone recommended a site to me that I can't remember the name of now
and I found one there. I thought they would be a neat thing to have
especially sense there are times on occasion when I'm not finished listening
to my music on my computer, but everybody else is, and it's time for me to
take my shower, but the range on my regular auvio one goes out of range from
my room to the bathroom, which is right around the corner, which is
disturbing to me.
Over all though, I love the speaker compared to the big jambox speaker,
which I previewed at bestbuy, and wasn't that impressed with, but wish the
range on it were better, but I'm veering off topic here. Can anyone
recommend one of these shower speakers if you all use one, sense I've gone
on amazon, looked at them, and haven't even made it all the way through the
list, and found them to all of course have mixed reviews, and sense most of
them suction cup to the shower wall, which won't work here, sense my shower
wall isn't tiled, I don't know of a workaround to get one to stay up.

Hello Wayne,
Did you try interacting with the message before navigating to the link, as I
suggested? I'm guessing that you usually press enter to read mail messages
with your preview pane hidden. In that case your focus may not be exactly on
the link when you try your VO+Shift+M. Some people move off and on the link
again, then retry. However, if you want to reliably land on the link in a
message that contains links, interact first. Then VO+Space will open the
link, or you can also use VO+Shift+M if you want other options. You'll also
be able to use web rotor shortcuts like VO+Command+l to move to the next
hyperlink or Quck Nav single letter combinations. And you don't need to
interact if you only want to read messages, but it ensures that you will
land with your focus on the link you want. Interact, VO+Down arrow to link
and VO+Space to open the link in mail should work reliably on all systems,
even older versions of Mac OS X with limited memory, which was why I gave
those instructions in my earlier post,

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

However, I generally interact with the mail messages area and use VO+Space
to open a link when my VoiceOver cursor is focused on it. For example,
interact, then VO+Down arrow or Down Arrow with Quick Nav to the link, and
VO+Space to open it.  You can also use Quick Nav and web rotor shortcuts to
move to the next or previous hyperlink. I'm guessing that you just press
"Enter" to read your message.  Interacting when you want to open a link will
ensure your focus is on the link.

O to find and load it. The last time I did it, I just keep it on my
external USB drive, and run my vertial machine from there. Works
flawlessly! JMO

Then navigate inside the .vmwarevm file, anselect the .vmdk file as
the virtual disk to use. There are lots of subfiles with the .vmdk
extension, but you want the master .vmdk.d
For example, there will be "virtual a bunch of
"virtual disk 00x.vmdk subfiles. you want the one without the 00x's.
Once the .vmdk is selected as the virtual disk to use, continue and
fusion will create a virtual machine from that virtual disk.

As the KB articles say, the process is identical to taking a disk
drive out of one physical machine and putting it in another as the
boot drive.

After installing Fusion on my new MBA, how do I move the windows7 VM

it a simple matter of copying the VM file from the iMac into the
VMWare directory on the MBA? The latter doesn't sound right to me, but
I thought the import menu was for VM's created in other programs like
parallels etc.

If it's a matter of transferring the VM file, I imagine it would be
necessary to turn off any machine dependent hardware connections in
the VM like camera, bluetooth etc first?

Well, it's got to last me 5 or more years.

Then I'm putting windows 8 on it along with NDVA as I sold Jaws for the
third time. I think it's going to stay that way for good as far as Jaws is
concerned.

Thanks again.

Dear Listers.

I am cross posting to both of the lists just in case any of you are using
the following app on your I phone or I pad.

This app for the time being is being trialed in the US.

I will give you the background of the following app as I was told today by
an HSBC representitive.

Those of you in the UK know that at present there has been a campaign for
Talking Cash machines which are available in some branches of other banks
and as far as I know is available in the USA.

So, however, I happened to be talking to a representitive of HSBC Bank where
I bank. He told me that at the moment, rather than concentrating on making
these cash machines accessible for it's disabled visually impaired
customers, they are trialing anew app designed for the I phone and I pad and
it's being trialed in the US due to their customer base being low.

So am wondering if any one is trialing this app especially for Voice Over in
the US? I am asking this because their last application called Fast Balance
was not accessible with Voice Over and I hope their new application will not
suffer the same fate.

I would appreciate any information from anyone to tell me that this app is
being trialed and proving successful.

Thank you in advance.

Kawal.

Hi guys,

Does anyone know of a printer/fax/scanner all-in-one that is useable without
sight? I am particularly interested in being able to use the fax function,
but I know that many of them have touch screens these days. It would be
great if it wasn't an ink hog, but that seems harder and harder to come by.
Hooking up to WIFI would also be a big plus.

Thanks, guys.

Hi Wayne,

Looking on Amazon, one of the reviews said that you cannot print the moment
any of the cartridges run out of ink, even if you're only printing in black.
I do not understand why printer manufacturers do this except for profit. I
guess maybe that's enough. Does anyone know of a printer/fax/scanner
combination that doesn't have this restriction? Printers used to be much
simpler in the old days.

Thanks,

How is the Epson on ink? Do you know if the cartridges are the refillable
type? I have an HP5150 deskjet that is old, but great on ink and my local
print shop refills the cartridges which is a huge cost savings and
conveience.
