Downloading Mavericks

2013-10-31 Thread The Smiths
Hi

I am currently downloading OSX Mavericks v 10.9. It keeps saying downloading
and tells me I am on a button that is dimmed. It has been nearly 2 hours. Is
this the usual time?

How do I found out how far I am through the downloading process, is there a
progress indicator I can find? I can't find any indication of progress.

Also, not related totally to mavericks, re downloading from the app store, I
was under the impression, from the documentation, that an icon of the app
that is downloaded, goes to the dock. This does not seem to be happening for
me. I can manually add to the dock from the application file. Any ideas
please would be appreciated.

Kind Regards
Janine

RE: Downloading Mavericks

2013-10-31 Thread The Smiths
Thanks Tim. Can view it now, all good. Not so good is the time it will take.
It reckons its only done 28%, 1.86GB and has a fluctuating time remaining,
maybe a couple of hours. I will be waiting a long time. Let's hope it works.

Hi,

Press cmd-4 while in the App Store to bring up your Purchase History. You
can then Interact with the Purchases Table and navigate to the Mavericks row
to check its progress. It all depends on your network connection and how
busy Apple's servers are for how fast it will download. Note, though, that
Mavericks is about 5.29 GB so it could take a while.

Later.

RE: Downloading Mavericks

2013-10-31 Thread The Smiths
Just to report back. It's finished downloading and probably took about 3
hours. Once it hit about 60% it showed a time of 20 minutes left but that
soon reduced to about 12 minutes. Many thanks for all the help.

Yes. I guess that I'm spoiled. I've downloaded it twice now, once at home
and once for work computers and in both cases it took about 45 to 50
minutes. Internet speed is a big factor.

Amadeus Pro

2013-11-01 Thread The Smiths
Hi

I have just purchased Amadeus Pro and wonder whether you can help me? When I
record with the internal microphone and built-in speakers, it picks up both
my speech and voiceover. If I try to plug in an external microphone, or even
headphones to monitor the recording, it doesn't include voiceover. How can I
make it include my speech and voiceover with an external microphone?

Humanware Brailliant display

2013-11-03 Thread The Smiths
Hi

Are any of you guys using the Brailliant display with your Mac? I have just
paired mine. I am trying to move by the element I have selected in the
rotor. I can select which element I want on the rotor, but I can't find the
command to move by that rotor element. On the iPhone it is space with dot 6
to move to the next occurrence and space with dot 3 to move to the previous
occurrence. These same commands don't seem to work on the Mac. I looked in
the voiceover commands for the braille display and there isn't anything
listed there. Am I wrong? I am yet to try the BrailleSense U2, so not sure
whether I will find the same thing. Update, just tried the BrailleSense and
it would appear that the same command is missing. Can anyone verify this for
me?

Apple website pop-up menu

2013-11-09 Thread The Smiths
Hi

I am trying to use the Mac to access my account settings on the Apple
website. I went to the store page and found the account option which
voiceover told me "link,pop-up menu". When I hit control option space, as
voiceover instructed, it activated the link for the first item of that menu,
which was something about check order status. Do you know how I can access
the rest of the items in the menu without it going and activating what I
don't want. I want to get down to the manage account settings which is about
the fourth/fifth item in the list, any ideas please? It works okay on a
windows computer with Jaws.

RE: Apple website pop-up menu

2013-11-09 Thread The Smiths
Thanks but no, not a group. I go to store, user tools, interact with that,
control option and right arrow until it says menu pop-up link, account.
Voiceover tells me to press control option space and after doing that it
activates the first link in the so-called pop-up menu, instead of showing me
what the other options in the menu are.

Installing apps on new macbook air

2013-12-08 Thread The Smiths
Hi

I have just started up my new macbook air and are in the process of
installing updates. Went into software updates and working down the list.
Installed the first one which was Garageband, Apple, 08 December 2013. I see
at the bottom of the list there is a Garageband 6.0.5 05 July 2013 which has
against it Install. Will I have to install this, having installed the
Garageband at the top of the list? Did I install the wrong one? Any help
would be appreciated.

Thanks

mail on macbook pro

2013-07-10 Thread The Smiths
Hi

I am new to this group. I have just bought a macbook pro and I am setting
things up on it. I have at this time 2 questions concerning the mail app, if
that is all right?

1. When I set up an account, on the last screen where it says also set up,
the only option I am presented with is the checkbox for notes. The
checkboxes for calendar, reminders and contacts are dimmed. I am with xtra
which using yahoo, pop3. Does anyone know why these options are dimmed? Has
it to do with my isp or type of email account? Any help would be
appreciated.

2. An issue when I try going from my inbox, in the list of mailboxes, over
to my list of messages. Using the tab key it seems to want to go to about 4
other buttons before it goes over to the list of messages. Is there any way
to set the tab, or a key command, to go straight over to my list of
messages. Listening to a demo from Applevis David was able to do one push of
the tab and went straight across to the list of messages.

Kind Regards

Reserve Battery Power warning

2013-07-10 Thread The Smiths
Hi again,

When the battery is down a dialogue box appears warning of running on
reserve battery power. Immediately after this the speech cuts out. I am told
that there is an ok button within the box but I am not able to get there
without the help of voiceover. Turning voiceover off and on does not bring
speech back. Any ideas? If it is a known issue I will make an effort to
monitor battery status before it gets to this point.

RE: mail on macbook pro

2013-07-11 Thread The Smiths
Thanks for that Nicholas. I figured it was because of POP3. Xtra here does
not support IMAP as far as I am aware. I will work through your answer, I
would assume to navigate to the right to the message list table is VO plus
right arrow?

I have noticed when I am in mail, e.g. writing an email, if a new message
comes in it reads it. Is there a command to allow the mail to come down but
not read it straight away?

1. This has probably got something to do with your email provider (Yahoo)
and/or the fact that you're using POP3. It can also be with the type of
account you've set up. I'd strongly recommend you look into using IMAP
rather than POP.

If you want to import your contacts from Yahoo you might be able to export
them from the Yahoo website and then import them into the Contacts app on
your MacBook. I'd recommend using your iCloud account for reminders and
calendars and the like.

2. When you've selected the mailbox you want, stop interacting with the
mailbox list, navigate to the right to the message list table and interact
with it.. You could also try VO-J. Another thing to be aware of is you can
put mailboxes in your favourites bar, and then use the short cut keys
Command with numbers 1 through 9 to move to the first nine mailboxes in your
favourites bar.

Initial voiceover at desktop

2013-07-15 Thread The Smiths
Hi

The initial voice at the desktop when I first turn my macbook pro on has
changed. I don't know what I have done. After start up the voiceover used to
say "Finder Desktop Macintosh HD selected volume" now it says "Finder
Desktop Desktop". When I check where the cursor is with VO F3, it says
"Macintosh HD is in the voiceover cursor". When I check my keyboard focus
with VO F4, it says "nothing has keyboard focus". Does this explain why it
is saying Finder Desktop Desktop? Does anyone know how do I get it back to
saying the original message Finder Desktop Macintosh HD selected volume?

RE: Initial voiceover at desktop

2013-07-15 Thread The Smiths
Hi Ricardo

Yes voiceover is doing a number of things differently since yesterday. I
don't know whether it is related or not, but I did download and install
dropbox and I, for the first time, did a backup to time capsule. The
different things I notice with voiceover, apart from what I mentioned: 1.
When I am in the dock after moving along the dock, when I try to go back to
desktop with control option shift D, voiceover just repeats the item it is
on in the dock. It does move the voiceover cursor and keyboard focus back to
desktop (I can verify that with voiceover plus F3 and F4 respectively); 2.
When I am in Safari on Pages (I had no problems with this before), sometimes
when I am going through the contents of the page, voiceover just makes a
clicking noise on the links instead of reading them. When I move off them
and back on, it then reads the link; 3. When I am arrowing through the menus
in various built-in applications sometimes (not consistent all the time but
only since yesterday) voiceover will start to read the menu item but cut off
after maybe one syllable. Arrowing down through the items will do the same,
partly read the item but again, not all the time; 4. Again not consistent,
occasionally it refuses to talk to me at the login screen despite the
setting being enabled for it to do so; and 5. The date and time reads in a
different voice and seems to take awhile (I am not sure if this is a recent
change or whether voiceover has always done this), as far as I can work out
it is using the default voice that the mac came with.

I was going very well I thought, until yesterday, having just had the mac
for about a week. Is this fixable, being that a number of stupid things are
happening, or is it a case of taking the mac back to default (no idea how to
do) and starting over? Appreciate any advice.

Kind Regards
Janine

Apple Time Capsule setup

2013-07-17 Thread The Smiths
Hi

I am wanting to setup my time capsule to act as a wireless hard drive only.
In the initial setup it lets me join an existing network but then the
MacBook pro wants to connect to the time capsule instead of the existing
router. This means that it does not allow me to see the other computer in
the network. I had read somewhere that during the initial setup I would be
given the option to setup manually and choose wireless hard drive option.
The only other button was options. I clicked on that which showed me the
time capsule where the options of joining existing network or creating a new
network were given. I joined existing network, which worked but now it does
not see the other computers. The mac is effectively talking to just the time
capsule. I have done resets to try again but end up with the same options.
Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Kind Regards

RE: Apple Time Capsule setup

2013-07-18 Thread The Smiths
Hi Tim

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Not seeing a new network, still able to
connect to the internet. It is showing up as another device on the network.
Not using the time capsule as a router, using our TP Link router. Since
hooking up the time capsule (plugged into power talking wirelessly to the
router, I would assume) when I try to see the other computers on the Mac, it
just shows the time capsule as the only device in my network. The other two
computers that showed up under Shared do not show when the time capsule is
plugged in. If the time capsule is unplugged, they show up again. I can't
seem to find any way to edit the settings on the time capsule to see what it
is doing. The best of what I can figure out, is that the Macbook must be
somehow talking only to the time capsule. Appreciate your help.

Janine

Subject: Re: Apple Time Capsule setup

Hi,

When you set up an Apple WiFi device like the Time Capsule up to Join an
Existing Network, it simply becomes another device on the network similar to
a laptop or iDevice. That is, it will simply be a part of your network but
not broadcasting any extra signal for connecting to. Therefore, as long as
it is connected to your primary WiFi router, the only way of accessing it is
through your existing WiFi network, it will not be broadcasting anything
that segregates you from your other devices. You should not see any new
networks available in your WiFi list of available networks.

. Are you joining a network hosted by a different Apple WiFi device like a
Airport Extreme or Express?

. Are you seeing a new WiFi network?

. Are you still able to connect to the Internet?

Later...

RE: can't erase disk on old MBA

2013-07-26 Thread The Smiths
Hi Donna and list

I am thinking with the various peculiarities I am having with voiceover, and
given I have only had the Macbook Pro for about 3 weeks, of taking it back to
default and starting again with a clean install. Have spoken to Apple
accessibility, even did a create a new user, and still the odd problems persist
so it was suggested that a clean install would be the way to go. Please report
back here to the list if you go ahead so I can see what issues I will have to
deal with if I can get my courage to win over my nervousness. Got the Command
plus r but have read things about moving some slider thing and possible
renaming of hard drive, so ... Donna you will be my example, give me the
courage I need. I will await your feedback, thanks.

Kind Regards

Time capsule as hard drive only

2013-07-27 Thread The Smiths
Hi

On my list for tomorrow is to do a clean install back to default on my mac
(yes putting it off). Before I do, I want to try one more time to get the
time capsule up and running. We have a router that works perfectly alright
so I intend the time capsule just as a hard drive. I have it connected to
our current router via Ethernet cable with wireless turned off on the
capsule. The windows computers see the time capsule as a hard drive. The
Macbook Pro will see the time capsule and the other windows computers on the
network the first time I plug the time capsule in (the Mac is already on at
this stage). However when I turn the Macbook Pro off and then back on again
later, it only sees the time capsule. To bring all the computers back again
I have to unplug the time capsule. Does anyone have any suggestions how I
can have the Mac see the time capsule and the other computers all the time
despite shutting it down and restarting? The other option perhaps is to let
the time capsule create its own network without being plugged into the
router. Since I don't need internet access through the time capsule I could
manually switch to that network to do a back-up and switch back again? What
do you all think?

Regards
