Backing up Boot Camp with Time Machine

2010-07-16 Thread Justin Kauflin
Hey, while changing the disc I use with Time Machine, I noticed that I
could add my Boot Camp partition to the list of partitions to back
up. Has anybody done this, and would this actually make it possible
to restore the Boot Camp if I needed to?
Just wondering. Thanks for any feedback.
Justin

Re: Iphone Text message question

2010-08-03 Thread Justin Kauflin
Gena,
I'm using an iPhone 3gs here, and I noticed that ever since the upgrade to
IOS 4, the text messages have been quite buggy. Especially when I get a text
and click to respond. I always find that going back to the main messages
screen and then going back into the text you want to respond to helps. For me,
every time I want to respond to a text, the keyboard never comes up until I do
my little work around. Hopefully this will get fixed with the next update...

Re: External HD

2010-08-06 Thread Justin Kauflin
The Mac can read NTFS partitions, but out of the box, it can't write to them.
With that said, it'd probably best if you were able to reformat the disc to the
Mac format.
In my opinion, go head and get another 1TB drive, as they just keep
getting cheaper and cheaper, and have that Mac formatted. Then, you can copy
the files over to the Mac formatted and have 2 copies of all your files. You
can never back that stuff up enough:)

Hope that helps

Re: Skype.

2010-08-11 Thread Justin Kauflin
Hi, I'll try to help.
1. When I want to know when someone is online, I noticed that if they are
online, their name is above the Skype Test Call. That seems to be pretty
consistent. If your not sure where the test call is, its in a table that
lists all of your contacts in the main window.
2. When you download an application, your downloading the disc image. With
most of these, you are able to run the program from the disc image, but if you
want to put it in applications, you have to locate the Application file in the
downloads folder and copy it to your applications folder. I feel like the way
the Mac treats applications is much different than the way Windows treats them.
Once I got used to how it works, I like the way Mac does it. Feels much
cleaner.

Hope this helps some

You might want to contact the folks you got Infovox from. If your code is for
the language pack, it will not unlock the program. You have to get a single

Can't Switch Through Applications Sometimes...

2010-08-24 Thread Justin Kauflin
Hey everyone,
Just recently, I've been running into a strange situation on my MacBook
Pro. Sometimes when I boot up, I can load applications like Mail and Safari,
with no problems but when I press Command Tab, it only brings me to the Finder
window. The only way I can get back into the app is by choosing it in the Doc.
I've tried restarting Voice Over, but that doesn't help. The only thing I
can do to fix it is by restarting the computer. Is any one else experiencing
anything like this? Its getting a little annoying.
Oh, yeah, I'm also running Boot Camp and am wondering if this could be
complicating things? Thanks for any suggestions.

Funny Issue with Mail

2010-09-03 Thread Justin Kauflin
Hey,
I've been experiencing a strange issue when using Apple Mail to send messages.
I've been sending them with no problems that I knew of until I sent some
messages to a new address I hadn't sent to before. According to Mail, the
message was sent, but was never received by the person I sent it to. I asked
him to check the spam folder as well, but he had no luck finding it there
either. When I sent him the same message from GMail.com, he got it. I'm a
little worried about this, cause I don't know how many other times this has
occurred.
Does anyone have any ideas on why this might be happening?

Thanks,
Justin

Re: Funny Issue with Mail

2010-09-04 Thread Justin Kauflin
Scott,
To be honest, a lot of what your asking is a little beyond me. I have my
Gmail account setup, and I'm assuming it was done right, as most of my messages
are getting sent out. So far, all I know is that the message is being
registered as being sent out, as the e-mail is moved to the sent folder. The
mail program also makes the nifty airplane noise to indicate that the message
is on its way out. I've tried sending messages from 2 different networks, one
in New York and one in Virginia, and have gotten the same result. After
reading some of the experiences that others have had, I'm going to go ahead and
send messages from the actual Gmail website as that doesn't cause any issues.

Thanks so much for the response and for the info.

Re: accessibility of MacBook Air

2010-11-12 Thread Justin Kauflin
I also have good memories of the Braille 'n Speak and the Braille Lite.
Besides them crashing and losing all of my data multiple times, I loved using
them in class. I was extremely disappointed when I tried out the Pac mate. It
seemed to me like FS took a step backwards.
Once I have the budget for it, I look forward to working with a MacBook
Air. The newer models definitely sound like a huge step up from the previous
iteration. One thing that I really liked about the Braille 'n Speak and
Braille Lite models were that instant on feature. It made it a breeze to keep
up with real live. I'm glad to see that the Air is taking Mac in this
direction. Another hooray for Apple and accessibility.

Re: logic

2009-10-20 Thread Justin Kauflin

I'd also like to express my interest in any developments concerning
Logic and any other music production software being made accessible.
It would certainly be nice to actually have a choice when looking at
all the software that is out there. I'm quite interested to see what
progress DigiDesign makes with Pro Tools. Maybe this can be used as a
catalyst in order to get other companies to follow suit. If more
blind musicians show that if work is done for accessibility, there
will be a response, maybe more companies will realize the benefits...
Just my thoughts.

Garage Band Mixing

2009-10-21 Thread Justin Kauflin

I'm writing to find out if there is anybody who has ventured into
GarageBand land with Voice Over. I have a question for you. I am
trying to change the value of a tracks pan position, and can't seem to
get anything to work. I tried interacting with it like I would with
any other slider, but get no response, it just makes that noise that
lets you know that you can't do anything. Its quite curious, as I am
able to change the value for the volume which is in the same area. If
anybody has any information with this rather specific request, I'd
really really appreciate it!

Trouble with Keyboard focus in Fusion 3

2009-11-04 Thread Justin Kauflin

Hey, I was wondering if anyone else is having some trouble with
getting keyboard focus in Fusion 3? I am doing all of the things that
were previously mentioned and am getting very inconsistent results.
I've tried the Command + G, and have turned of Voice Over, all to no
real effect. After a while of messing around, I eventually get some
feedback from Jaws in Fusion, but I can never figure out what to do.
If anyone else is having any similar issues or has figured out what to
do, I'd really love to hear about it.
Thanks

Re: Help with partitioning a external disc

2009-11-13 Thread Justin Kauflin

Bret,
What you'll want to do is this.
When you select 2 partitions in the pop up menu, you'll then want to
VO over to the section that simply saysScroll Area.
Next, you'll want to interact with that. You'll notice that there's
two unknown sections separated by a horizontal splitter.
These unknown areas represent the 2 new partitions. In order to
select one of the partitions, you'll want to move the mouse cursor to
the VO cursor by pressing the VO keys + shift and F5.
Once the mouse cursor is on top of it, you'll want to click it by
pressing VO + shift + the spacebar.
Once you do that, you'll be able to edit the information about that
particular partition. In order to do the other one, you'll just do
the same commands to get the mouse over the other partition.
Hope that helps.

cursor to the albums list. Very strange and a bit annoying, as the
way it worked in Leopard was just fine. Its also a bit annoying that
I have to interact with each list in order to move the cursor down the
list. I used to be able to tab to the list and scroll through it with
the arrow keys... Ah well, still think the update is quite nice.
There will always be bugs with new things. Just figured I'd chime in
as well.

And actually, I have found that if you are in the list you want to
navigate through, you can stop interacting and type the key you'd like
to get to and then re-interact with the list, it will take you to that
item. Annoying, but works.

Re: iTunes playlist browser and keyboard shortcuts

2009-09-01 Thread Justin Kauflin

Scott, I am also talking about the browser list. The sources list
works fine. I have found that I have to use VO commands to get
anything to be read aloud. The interesting thing is that when I stop
interacting with the browser list and type the letter of the desired
artist or album, it will go to it when I interact with the list
again. Its a very buggy way to do things I think, but I've found that
it works. Also, I don't know if this is a new thing, but I've noticed
that if I just press F8, it acts as a play/pause button for iTunes no
matter where I am on the computer. The F7 and F9 keys act as a
previous and next button respectively. Just something new for me I
guess.
Hope you have luck with the browser lists.

Looking for Garage Band users

Hello, I'm wondering if there are any folks on the list that are
familiar with using Garage Band. I've just started using it and have

Where to go to inform Apple about bugs with Voice Over?

2009-09-04 Thread Justin Kauflin

Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone has a good place to go to let Apple know
about bugs we are encountering with Voice Over and Snow Leopard. I
have encountered a few and would really like to go to a good place to
let Apple know of my experience.
One of the most annoying things I have found is that every time I
open a folder in the Finder, I have to re-interact with the icon/image
view. This was definitely not the case for the Leopard OS. Anyone
else experiencing this? Also, iTunes is definitely way more unstable
under SL. Anyways, just wondering where to go. Thanks for any help.

Clean Install of SL

2009-09-06 Thread Justin Kauflin

Hello, forgive me for being dense. I am relatively new at all this,
but I'd like to know how to do a clean install of Snow Leopard and
restore some applications and settings that I have backed up with Time

to install Snow Leopard on an external drive running on Firewire 800?
If anybody would be willing to help me with this, feel free to contact

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Info for a Newby

2009-09-07 Thread Justin Kauflin

Hey everyone, First, I'd like to thank folks for being so helpful with
my posts. Its nice to post a question, and receive a response! I was
just wondering if there was a good resource for finding out general
information on the different applications that come with the Mac. I'm
just realizing how little I understand about a lot of the programs on
the Mac. I'm also wondering if there's a good resource for finding
out Voice Over commands. I just read about the keyboard command for
going to the end of the e-mail list, and wouldn't have found that if I
didn't read that particular post. I'm just wondering if there's a
place I can go to get a list of VO commands like that. I guess I'm
just on a search for as much information as I can get from one
location! Thanks for any points in the right direction!

Migration Assistant not recognizing External Hard Drives

2009-09-07 Thread Justin Kauflin

Hey everyone, I am stumped. I have just did a clean install of Snow
Leopard. I tried running migration assistant, but the assistant
doesn't seem to recognize the external hard drives I have plugged in.
i was able to use them to make the back ups, and they show up in the
side bar in the finder, but when I try to have it restore apps from
the external drives, they don't show up. Anybody have any thoughts on
why this is. Thanks so much for any feedback.

Re: Migration Assistant not recognizing External Hard Drives

2009-09-09 Thread Justin Kauflin

Hey thanks for that. Good to know. One question, has anyone been
successful in partitioning a hard disc with the disc utility and Voice

having a hard time selecting a partition in order to name it and set a
size etc... If anyone is having luck with this and VO, I'm all ears!
Thanks.

Partitioning External hard Drives with Disc Utility

2009-09-10 Thread Justin Kauflin

Hello Everyone, first off, I'd like to say thanks to all those who are
so helpful in their replies. Its been great actually being able to
get help with the issues I encounter. I have a question regarding the
disc utility.
I am trying to partition an external hard drive, and I'm having
difficulty in selecting a particular partition when I select 2
partitions in the pop up menu. Does anyone know how to effectively
create, name, and designate size for specific partitions?
Just for your information, I can select 2 partitions, but then
all of the fields for naming and sizing the partition are dimmed.
Any help would be appreciated as usual.
Take Care

Re: iTunes playlist browser and keyboard shortcuts

2009-09-10 Thread Justin Kauflin

Just to update, it seems that the playlist broser bug with VO has not
been resolved with iTunes 9. What a bummer. I will definitely be
writing to Apple about this. It is extremely annoying not to be able
to do this... I have found that you can't tab into the playlist
browser like you used to either... I'd really like to get this back.

iTunes is Buggy?

2009-09-10 Thread Justin Kauflin

Hey, I'd like to hear about everyone's experience of iTunes 9. I've
been having some problems with some bugs, and am wondering if these
are actual bugs, or I'm just doing something wrong.
First off, I cannot arrow through the songs as I could in Leopard
with the older iTunes. When I am in list mode and have the browser
active, I am unable to get Voice Over to announce anything while I
arrow through the lists. It actually doesn't even move the cursor.
In addition to this, I am unable to type any letters to have the
cursor move to a particular artist or album title. I wrote to Apple,
and they said they weren't encountering this problem. I'd like to see
if anyone is experiencing this? I am a big fan of iTunes, and am a
bit frustrated with these bugs.
Thanks for any feedback.

Re: work-around for finding the artist you want

2009-09-12 Thread Justin Kauflin

Wow, I'm glad to hear other people are struggling with this. I'm not
crazy after all. I would like to thank Anna for the great advice. It
worked for me. I do have to say that I would also like to get the old
iTunes functionality back however. how did you figure that out?!
Wow. Anyways, I do think this was an iTunes bug, not a SL one.
I think it might be good for all those who are experiencing these
bugs with the playlist browser to compile a list of other bugs we are
encountering and we should collectively write to Apple with these. It
might help them try to get things back the way they used to.
The major problems I'm encountering include this one, as well as
the inaccessible tables in the iTunes store. If anyone else is having
these problems, please go ahead and let Apple know.
Ok, forgive me for the long post. Here's hoping things get
better for us.

Re: iTunes 9 column browser query

2009-09-13 Thread Justin Kauflin

First off, if you haven't already found it, there's a new submenu in
the view menu that allows you to choose what you want the playlist
browser to show. You can check mark genre, artist, album, etc...
This will get the playlist browser to at least appear as it used to.
Now, with regards to getting Voice Over to actual read the items in
the browser list without having to interact with everything is another
issue. Some folks have figured out different work arounds that I
would recommend checking out, but it really is quite buggy right now.
Good luck.

Migration Assistant Troubles

Re: Handbreak and backing up a Disney Movie

2010-12-09 Thread Justin Kauflin
I can't say how it is to burn the DVD, Up, but I've noticed that some Disney
movies have a sort of protection against burning them to the computer.
Disney has a funny way of dealing with burning dvd's to the computer.
When using handbreak, you can choose between a bunch of different titles to
have as the source. Disney basically makes a bunch of dummy files that look
like they might be the actual movie, but are just jumbled files. What you'll
want to do is find out the title by playing the dvd in the default DVD player.
When the movie is playing, go to the go menu and scroll down to the title sub
menu. the correct title to use in handbreak will be checked. If you select
the wrong title, the dvd will import out of order.

Hope that helps some,

2010-12-09 Thread Justin Kauflin
I can't say how it is to burn the DVD, Up, but I've noticed that some Disney
movies have a sort of protection against burning them to the computer.
Disney has a funny way of dealing with burning dvd's to the computer.
When using handbreak, you can choose between a bunch of different titles to
have as the source. Disney basically makes a bunch of dummy fiWhat you'll want
to do is find out the title by playing the dvd in the default DVD player. When
the movie is playing, go to the go menu and scroll down to the title sub menu.
the correct title to use in handbreak will be checked. If you select the
wrong title, the dvd will import out of order.

Re: apple tv and choppy speech

2010-12-28 Thread Justin Kauflin
It is possible to connect the HDMI to the television and have the optical audio
go to the receiver. I don't know if that would effect the quality of the
signal though...

I actually resolved my sound issue last night. I believe that the
digital to analog converters on my receiver are not very good, so no matter
what I ran through the optical, the audio would sound quite compressed. I
found that a work around for me was to use a y chord to take audio from the
line out of the tv and have it go into the auxiliary input of the receiver.
The sound is noticeably better this way.

Hope this makes sense to someone. I'm just glad to have good audio in the
living room.

I think this might be specific to your model of receiver. HDMI definitely

27 inch iMac Firewire chipset question

2011-02-22 Thread Justin Kauflin
I'm thinking about purchasing the 27 inch iMac but had one question before
making the leap. Does anyone have any idea whether the newest models have a
Texas Instruments chipset for the Firewire port?

I called Apple, and they wouldn't say. This was a real bummer, as the
chipset on this thing is going to be a deal breaker for me.

If anyone has one of these models and isn't sure how to find out what the
chipset is, as far as I know, you can find it out if you have boot camp
running. The device manager in Windows tells you the manufacturer of the
chipset..

Thanks to anyone who might be able to hook me up with this info.

Justin

Re: 27 inch iMac Firewire chipset question

2011-02-24 Thread Justin Kauflin
Very well put Esther, and thanks so much for the info. Very handy stuff.

In addition to the points you made, I use Boot Camp to run a number of audio
recording programs, and when running under Windows 7, I've encountered issues
with the non Texas Instruments Firewire port with a number of audio interfaces.
Texas Instruments chipsets just tend not to have any of these issues.

you can determine how big you want the files to be before you import the DVD.
