writing on walls with the new facebook?

2009-03-14 Thread Jessi Rathwell

hey guys
how do you write on someone's wall using safari? now that facebook has
changed itself, again, there doesn't seem to be a "write on so and
so's wall" link like there used to be!! I can't figure out where it
is!! gah I'm so sick of facebook changing!!!

it sure does!! I haven't had to try it yet, thank goodness, but I feel
totally confident if the time came when I actually needed to
reinstall, I could do it. Kevin made a really great podcast about
installing leopard, it's on blind cool tech.

Re: ipod v3.0 software

2009-03-20 Thread Jessi Rathwell

yeah, before I got my Nokia E71, I used a 6620 and talks ran great on
that. that phone was solid as a rock, lol! the only reason I switched
to the e71 was cuz I got sick of number texting and I wanted to be
able to do more stuff like twitter and facebook, lol.
but yeah. if talks and mobile speak can run on nokia phones which
probably aren't as powerful as the IPhone, I don't see why some kind
of voiceover couldn't run on the IPhone. really, I think all they need
is a keyboard overlay that could fit over the touch screen somehow.
maybe it could be optional? like an IPhone accessory or something?

I'm not sure about the inner workings of the IPhone, how much
processing power it has to run voiceover, but I'm sure if anyone can
do it, apple can. they've been moving forward with accessibility in
such a huge way already, the IPhone seems like a natural next step. it
may not be in this next generation, but I'm sure it's probably coming.

yes, yes, it's coming!!!
I actually talked to thepeople from firefox, saw them at CSUN this

apple, and they assured me they were working hard at it and that
making firefox accessible with voiceover was a huge priority. I'm glad

Re: new mac

2009-03-23 Thread Jessi Rathwell
hey Wendy,
welcome to the wonderful world of voiceover like everyone else has
said, that's what this list is for, asking questions, so feel free to
jump in and I'm sure someone will have the answer!!
I've been using my mac for almost a year now, wow!! I came over to the
good side last year after participating in a hands on voiceover
session at CSUN. after that I knew this was amazing so I convinced my
dad to let me do accessibility testing with voiceover for the company
he works for, and let's just say the testing isn't exactly ending?
haha. I guess technicly it is, I finished my writeup for them months
ago but they haven't asked for my beloved mac back yet lol.

as for Bible software, I don't know of any software, but I have the
old and new testament in text files if you want me to send them over.
I'm not sure which version you like, N.I.V is what I like so that's
the one I have. but there's always Bible gateway.com. and there
probably is software somewhere that I just don't know about!!

Re: new mac

2009-03-24 Thread Jessi Rathwell
hey
you can find the users guide by pressing command VO f8. VO = control
and option held together. when the quickstart guide is on, voiceover
is turned off so to return to it press escape to stop quickstart guide
and then of course command f5.

Re: new mac

2009-03-24 Thread Jessi Rathwell
I remember that excitement!!! I remember I was at my parents' cabin
when I learned voiceover. we have dialup internet there so I was bored
and was like why not get started with voiceover! lol. so I sat there
for two days and listened and tried things and wrote rediculous
amounts of questions to this list and soaked it all in, lol.
the sites Ben mentioned are good, too. screenless switchers and
lioncourt.com. and then there's always apple's main accessibility
page, apple.com/accessibility/voiceover

extracting audio from .avi files?

2009-03-25 Thread Jessi Rathwell

hey guys
I was just looking through a random folder of stuff on my external
hard drive and I found a video of a live version of my favourite song
ever, "ready for love." by India.Arie. don't ask me how I forgot I had
a live version of my favourite song, lol. it was tucked away in a
folder called "random music!" haha. shows how organized I am.
but oh my gosh, this performance is amazing!!! I *need* it on my
IPod I was just wondering if there's a way to extract the audio
out of it and convert it to mp3? it's .avi right now. I know you can
do this in goldwave on the pc, but I don't wanna boot up my pc if I
don't have too.
thanks. I can see this moving its way up my top 25 most played in no
time!!! so good

Re: Just waht is "off topic" here

2009-03-25 Thread Jessi Rathwell

I agree. I don't think it's a huge deal to go through and delete
messages. I think we should be mindful of how many offtopic posts we
post and the huge majority should be mac stuff, but if there's the odd
offtopic post that someone thinks would be interesting to all,
especially if it could be related to mac OS10 somehow, I think it
should be okay to post it. the delete key is your friend if you don't
wanna read something. and in mail, they make it so easy since you can
just go to the subject column.

Re: Problem with IJournal

2009-03-30 Thread Jessi Rathwell

I'm sure you don't, there are very few viruses for mac. I don't have
anti virus software either and to be honest I'm not really that
concerned about it. maybe that's naive of me, but it seems viruses are
something windows users have to deal with more. your iJournal is
probably just acting up for whatever reason. have you tried
downloading a new DMG file? maybe the one you have is somehow corrupt?

strange iTunes problem

2009-03-31 Thread Jessi Rathwell

hey guys
just noticed a strange problem with iTunes 8.1.

I typed an artist into the search box and was looking through the
songs table, pressing return on what I wanted to hear like normal.
sometimes it doesn't switch songs though. like I'll be listening to
one and have another one selected, but when I press return on it it
doesn't switch. it doesn't happen all the time, just sometimes. it's
weird.

I also find it a bit slow when I'm just skipping quickly through my
library. it seems to be busy more frequently than past versions.
other than those two things, I'm liking it so far! currently listening
to some John Legend.

couldn't you just crank up your volume really loud and have it play
and be picked up by the internal mic? may not be the best sound

whole bunch, and I'm sure I'll never have time to go through and
listen to all these past episodes! I'm wondering if there's a way in
itunes to delete all the rest and just keep maybe the two most recent
episodes but then have it download future episodes? I saw it in
podcast settings, and I changed my default setting to keep only the
two most recent episodes of each, but all the other ones are still
there even though I've gone to the contextual menu on them and clicked
update podcast. what am I doing wrong?

Re: podcast question

2009-04-01 Thread Jessi Rathwell

oh really? dang, that's gonna take forever!!! it made it seem like it
could automaticly delete the old episodes. but mine doesn't. I really
hope I dont have to go through and delete them all manually!! and then
what about the future? I told it to only keep the most recent two
episodes of each, but like I said before, it's still keeping all of
them.

Re: Automatically managing podcast subscriptions [was Re: podcast question]

2009-04-01 Thread Jessi Rathwell

hey Ester,
wow, thanks!! this is so detailed! :)
I understand what I'm supposed to do with the contextual menu and all
that, and I've just tried it, but they're still there! when I VO space
on allow auto delete, voiceover kind of throws a mini fit and needs to
reset itself, and iTunes just dings whenever I try and move voiceover
around anywhere on it until I take focus away from it and bring it
back. when I expand the podcast folder, all the episodes are still
there, though most of them say undownloaded podcast. so I guess
they're not taking up space on my drive since they're still
undownloaded, but they're so annoying all being there, some of them
have over a hundred episodes that are undownloaded!!
so yeah, I get it, but I'm obviously still doing something wrong or my
computer just doesn't like me.

Re: Twitter client

2009-04-05 Thread Jessi Rathwell

there's a tweets table. if you interact with that, you'll see all the
incoming messages plus messages that you send. if you go into
settings, you can control exactly which messages you see. sometimes
it's a bit strange and you have to interact with the table several
times, but it usually only takes a couple times before you can arrow
through the messages. or maybe it's just me that's having the strange
multiple interaction problem. when you arrow through, after
interacting, just use the arrows not VO arrows.

hmm, yeah, maybe reinstall the client? that's really strange!! I've
never heard of that before. when I installed twitteriffic, I never saw
any unknowns when trying to read the table and I didn't have to change
any settings. I can't remember what's in the settings, but you might
wanna go through and look just to make sure something's not weird there?
I tweeted a lot tonight lol. went to a really exciting concert and I'm
just so addicted to twitter that I had to tweet when I was driving
there, when I got there, when I was standing right by the stage lol.
so don't be surprised if there's lots from me when you finally get to
read them!! haha.

Re: just got my mac today

2009-04-06 Thread Jessi Rathwell

hey Peninnah
welcome to the wonderful world of Mac!!! I grew up on windows too and
didn't find it too hard to adjust. when you're learning, try to throw
away a lot of what you learned about windows and pretend this is the
first computer you've ever used. some stuff is the same, but a lot of
it is different and it helps when you're not thinking well, I did this
on windows...
I'm not totally sure about your iPod nano, I've only used mine with my
mac. but I assume you'd have to start over cuz you'd be using a
different iTunes library? unless your library is on an external drive?
hmmm. I'm sure someone else can answer those questions better. but for
sure, when you sync it up, it will use whatever the system voice on
your mac is. mine uses Alex and I wouldn't have it any other way!!

Re: iTunes 8.1.1 available

2009-04-06 Thread Jessi Rathwell

yay!!! I hope this release is a bit more responsive, too! I found 8.1
a bit sluggish when quickly skipping through my library. it would
often become busy and would take a few seconds to become ready again.
I cant wait to hit up software update!!!

Re: just got my mac today

2009-04-06 Thread Jessi Rathwell

I found that too. they really do. and I like that you really only need
to know a few commands before you can pretty much use it. and it works
the same in every program. you don't have to worry about routing the
jaws cursor to the pc cursor in this or that place. even the voiceover
cursor seems to make more sense than the jaws cursor. I've been really
impressed over the past year!!! there are still a few things that
windows handles better, but apple is really rising to the challenge
and I can't even remember the last time I booted up my windows pc.

Re: introduction

2009-04-18 Thread Jessi Rathwell

ha! outspoken! that creepy voice saying :button" still haunts my
dreams lol!! way back in the early 90s, back in the day when I was
like eight, haha my school for some reason gave my family a mac? I
think it was supposed to be for me but I remember my family used it a
lot more than I did. I do remember using it though! I never
independently learned how to use outspoken, but I remember my parents
clicking on clarisworks for me and it saying "button," lol. I remember
I learned to type on a mac too, cuz that was all they had my school.
those old ones!! maybe that's why I can type so fast now? cuz I
learned on a mac with all the right type? lol. I didn't see a pc til I
was like 13 and then I learned windows, and swore to it! I was
seriously the most anti-mac person ever until last march at CSUN when
my eyes were opened and I returned to my mac roots lol! I can't
believe it's been almost a year! and I have no desire to go back! lol.
anyway, welcome Andrea!! you'll love it!! feel free to ask questions,
that's what this list is for!!

family got our first windows computer, it was november 11th 1997 I
believe? possibly 96? can't remember the exact year lol. and from that
day forward, the old mac went somewhere and I haven't seen it since!
lol. I'm sure we dont't have it anymore, though I really wish we
did...I'd love to play with it and actually learn outspoken just so I
can say I know how to use it lol. although, from what I remember it
didn't offer too much in the way of accessibility and the voice was
horrible. I remember typing up a science project on that old thing
lol. that was the only thing I remember doing with it, that and
writing letters to an old pen pal I used to have! wow! the nostalgia!
lol. now I'm wondering what happened to her? haha.
I'mma ask my parents tomorrow if they remember life with that old mac,
lol. I'mma remind them that their computer roots are based in apple!
now they're all windows people and they're constantly teasing me about
my love of all things apple so I think they need a reality check so
they can remember where they came from lol.
peace and positivity :)

Re: oldschool mac nostalgia

2009-04-18 Thread Jessi Rathwell

ahahaha Alex I know that's right lol!! if I took over my dad's job
everyone would be ditching windows. I think it's important to know
both OS's, I love that I can just sit down at any computer running
windows or mac OS and use it as long as it's got a screenreader. but
in my humble opinion, lol, mac is so much easier to learn than
windows...so much more intuitive. it just makes sense most of the time!!

hmmm, yeah, I've noticed that about VO crashing more lately too. but
the nice thing about VO is even if it has to crash, it fixes itself!
so it's kind of annoying but really not that big of a deal cuz it
knows it needs to be loyal to its user and it just comes back lol. but
yeah, I've noticed and it would be nice if it didn't do that!

hmmm. I could've sworn there was a car racing game too. but maybe not?
but my brain keeps telling me there was, it was called top speed or
speed racing or something to do with speed! it existed, I know it did
lol!
my mom's computer isn't really an antique. it's a three year old
toshiba laptop that just happened to have a bad life and hasn't quite
aged gracefully. lol.

Re: oldschool mac nostalgia

2009-04-19 Thread Jessi Rathwell

yeah, that would be interesting, a history lesson about accessibility.
although, it doesn't seem like there was too much accessibility before
VO. outspoken seemed like it only did so much. that's funny people
were protesting against GUI's though, although I can see how they
might think that. I'm sure going from a completely text based command
line to a completely graphical interface would've been scary back in
the day.

yeah, I get questions like that all the time. how easy it to do this?
you use the mac for everything? wow. like they don't believe it can
work or something. it's sad!! I know apple wasn't always known for its
accessibility in the past but they're really really doing a complete

I'm sure they will though, once more people see the mac in action.

Re: Flash and VO alternative

2009-04-19 Thread Jessi Rathwell

yeah, that's what I've heard, that they're really against the idea.
how did they get it working half decently with windows, then? were the
adobe people more willing to work with windows or did the windows
screenreader developers do it themselves? and if they did, why can't
apple developers do the same thing?

Re: introduction

2009-04-25 Thread Jessi Rathwell

Andrea,
you don't need to buy anything separate, well unless you want a
braille display and then you'd have to buy one of those. but as far as
using a mac with leopard, all you need is the computer. voiceover,
like it did in tiger, comes built into leopard.

 Hi, Andrea:

I was using a Mac back in the early 1990's with OutSpoken, which
 was
not built in to the OS. I would say that Voiceover in the latest
version of Leopard is similar to but far superior to that. I just
switched from my XP machine in January, and have not gone back. I
also have Vista running on this Macbook as well, so can do anything
 in
 Windows I need to.

I offer tutoring and support as well, so if you need me, give me a
shout. I know you'll have a lot of fun with it, especially if
 you're
the type that thinks like a musician--it's built in that intuitive,
 fuzzy logic sort o way.

Re: Accessibility of services at talkshoe.com

2009-04-28 Thread Jessi Rathwell

oh, wow, you got in there to listen? sweet. I tried, but couldn't
figure it out. I didn't try very hard though, I must admit lol...I
figured if I couldn't get in to listen to the live podcast I'd just
listen when the AAC stream came out on itunes and I guess that's what
I'll have to do. I'm curious about it, though!! I love the mac
observers podcast. those guys are so funny and they seem to know a
lot. I encouraged them to check out voiceover and they said they
would. sucks the quality was so low, though. hopefully when it hits
AAC someone will have fixed it so the quality is better!!

Hi all, Found this service because one of the podcasts that's
available form macobserver.com the mac Geek gab, is going to use it
 to
hold their 200th show on. Anybody tried this, and if so is it
accessible? In looking at the information on what it's about, it
 sounds pretty cool.

Re: introduction

2009-04-28 Thread Jessi Rathwell

Andrea,
if the new one isn't too much more, I'd probably go with that. I'm
sure the second hand one is okay, but there's just something about
buying new technology...you know it's all in working order and there
hasn't been any damage done that people may not have told you about.
if you wanted a bigger hard drive you could always think about getting
an external hard drive to back up too, I think they're coming down in
price.
