Retrieving images from KNFB Reader

2016-07-27 Thread Jenine Stanley
Does anyone know of a way to get the image files from the KNFB Reader app?

There is a command to view original image but I actually need to get copies of
those original images prior to OCR and conversion. I don’t see any way to do
this but maybe I’m missing something. Thanks.

Re: Help with Abby fine reader

2016-08-07 Thread Jenine Stanley
Hi,

To install the app, yes, copy the file to your applications folder and press
command-o to open it. the app should then install itself.

If you don’t have a scanning device plugged into your Mac, you will just see
the computer itself listed under devices.

First
You will see an area called New
Task. This will be at the far left. Your cursor and focus will land on the
Title area which should show your computer.

Use VO-Right arrow to move to the Convert to Word button.

Once you activate this button, you will be taken to a standard Open file dialog
where you can choose the file you want to convert. There are also several
options in this dialog for how you want that file to be processed.

Hope that helps get you started.

question about Google Docs and iOS 9.3.4

2016-08-07 Thread Jenine Stanley
I updated my work phone, a 5S to iOS 9.3.4.

I receved a document via email attachment and wanted to put it over in Google
docs. This option no longer appears on my share sheets, either from email,
DropBox or anywhere else. I can open google Docs and see the files I already
have but can’t seem to transfer anything.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, were you able to fix it?

I’m using iOS10 beta 3. Is there any way to change what VO reads as the app

Re: Using MS Word and Excel on the Mac

2016-08-10 Thread Jenine Stanley
Thanks for this analysis. I need to try Word again on my MBP. I have Office
360, or is that 365? I can never keep that one in my head. Anyway, I tried Word
initially and couldn’t get the VO cursor out of the header.

I wasn’t making any progress with Excel either an
d I use it daily for what I consider mini data bases, i.e., spreadsheets that
are laid out as tables and that can be sorted and parsed like a database.

I do like Outlook mail on the Mac but need to use it more often as it’s not
exactly intuitive.

The other thing I do is to access our network drive much like you would with
windows Explorer, which is what I use now to do so. I just exchange files on
that drive and draw from it current versions of my spreadsheets which are
updated each night. Jenine Stanley

awesome as well and the way the spaces between keys are covered makes it hard
to get stuff down in between keys. It also has a little stand area along the
back top for iPad/iPhone if not in an Otterbox case. It’s about 11.5 inches
wide, 8 inches long and about half an inch thick. It takes 2 Double A
batteries, which last a ridiculously long time.

Re: Travel bluetooth keyboard recommendations?

2016-08-13 Thread Jenine Stanley
The Logitech keyboard I mentioned has a mechanical, and very tactile, on-off
switch on the back. It also can pair with iOS or Windows devices by way of a
switch on the front.

I love my Apple keyboard but it’s hard to tell sometimes when it’s on or off.

I feel completely stupid here as I think I’ve asked this before but is there a
quick way to check the progress of a download from Safari?

I’ve gone to the tool bar and interacted with the Downloads button but nothing

Thanks.

Re: Here is the Text of the User Manual for the Nearby Explorer, for iOS, GPS Navigation App

2016-08-28 Thread Jenine Stanley
Thanks David, you beat me to this one.

Also, what we have to remember regarding GPS is that any app, yes even the
blindness specific ones, used in real time assumes you are in the middle of the
street, rather than on a sidewalk. This is how the maps are designed which are
at the heart of every GPS program.

There are apps, like Key Nav for the BrailleNote series of products, PC Maps
and I’m sure others, that allow you to explore in a virtual mode which does put
you on one side or other of a street to a point. again, these are only as
accurate as the maps.

Re: Here is the Text of the User Manual for the Nearby Explorer, for iOS, GPS Navigation App

2016-08-28 Thread Jenine Stanley
At the risk of also being condescending, I’ll chime in here.

Nearby Explorer does identify which side of the street the destination is on if
it can do so. There are some address schemes which do not make this possible.
Sometimes it’s also recorded incorrectly when the mappers put in geocodes for
things like points of interest.

I’d wager that your other GPS solution gets it wrong at least a couple times,
but maybe not in the immediate areas where you use it.

to answer your question/train of thought though, Nearby Explorer does provide
this information when possible.

Not to defend Mike, as he can do that himself, but he didn’t realize that the
app does indeed identify POIs when possible with the side of street information
included. He made a correction on the Nearby Explorer lists to his assumption.
I’m sure he’ll go back in and correct the podcast or have an adendum for it.

2014-02-11 Thread Jenine Stanley
Hello List,

I'm Jenine Stanley from Columbus, Ohio. I've been using adaptive computer
equipment since 1988 but got my first Mac, an MBP, about a month ago.

I'm doing some word processing and want to resume audio editing and production
with this machine. My husband is also getting an iMac this week. He is a
combination large print and speech user and I am totally blind.

Looking forward to tons of good info here. Thanks all.

MicroWave audio editor

2014-02-11 Thread Jenine Stanley
Anyone out there using the MicroWave audio editor? I have a couple
questions about selecting sound from a "document".

I'm a Sound forge user from the PC world so am very familiar with audio editing
but there seems to be no keyboard command for this task, or at least not one
readily apparent to me. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

id use the VO quick start guide at first but have been using VO on my iPhone
since 2011 so much of it was familiar.

I do find myself going back over sections of the VO help materials and each
time it makes more sense. Steep learning curve but repetition helps a lot.

2014-02-11 Thread Jenine Stanley
thanks Alex,

Unfortunately, I'm getting a lot of 404 errors on the AppleVis site. This goes
for podcasts, guides and the like. This is also with Safari and IE on my
Windows machines. Very disappointing.

the info I was able to access there though was incredibly helpful.

Does VO M twice not work on the iMac? that's what I use to get to it. The first

working with PDF files

2014-02-11 Thread Jenine Stanley
Not sure how many of you do a lot with PDF files but let me describe a
situation I deal with in the Windows environment and let's see if there's
anything comparable on the Mac side.

I have Acrobat Pro and with it I can render some PDF files with forms usable
with the accessibility settings.

Is there an equiviliant app for the Mac? I have PDF Reader Pro but I don't see
any accessibility options to put in form fields and such.

any wisdom on this would be greatly appreciated.

getting out of threads in Mail

2014-02-12 Thread Jenine Stanley
I changed Mail to Classic view but now have one question. When in a
conversation or thread of messages, how do you get out of it? I end up deleting
the entire thread before I can get back to the main list of messages. I know
I'm not doing something right here. I like the classic view but will switch
back if I can't figure this out as it's annoying. :)

iMac setup

2014-02-13 Thread Jenine Stanley
We are now the proud owners of a just unboxed iMac. It needs to come back up to
room temperature before I attempt to turn it on but is there anything I should
know about the initial setup?

I'm excited that it can be set up with VO. It will be my husband's machine so
it will also have Zoom installed and working, I hope. :)

speaking keystrokes in password edit boxes

2014-02-13 Thread Jenine Stanley
The iMac setup went fine, save for a few glitches when setting up the email
accounts. My dear spouse only has 5 of them. :)

He did ask me if there is any way to change the behavior of VO in the password
edit boxes. He wants it to read what he's typing there instead of the security
feature of just making sounds.

I could not think for the life of me where in either the VO utility or system
preferences I saw this option.

Also, where do I check so that VO comes on automatically at startup?

Thanks.

Oh and he loves, loves, loves the retina display.

Re: speaking keystrokes in password edit boxes

Thanks Chris. Now I just have to get the password that was set for this machine
to go in as Admin and life will be good.

I understand the reasoning behind having no speech with passwords and generally
I have my computers set this way but my dear spouse does not. His logic is that
his computers remain in the Man Cave and no one goes into said Man Cave but me
so why not be able to hear what one is typing? All righty then.

Type carefully I say. :)

Re: Accessible PDF Files & MACBook PRO

2014-02-16 Thread Jenine Stanley
Yes, it is.
I've even filled out PDF forms on line using an MBP and VoiceOver so much more
easily than using the Windows equivalent.

If the PDF is created using accessibility features then Preview, PDF Reader Pro
and I'm sure a few other apps, can read and interact with it quite well. The
tough part is getting people to create PDFs in accessible formats.

deleting an account

2014-02-18 Thread Jenine Stanley
how long does it usually take to delete an account from the MBP if using the
default option of saving an image of the user account?

I'm deleting two accounts and it's taking what seems like a very long time,
over 10 minutes now. I'll just let it sit there and do its thing but ...

Spoiled by speed? who, me? :)

USB keyboard issues

2014-02-19 Thread Jenine Stanley
Let me see if this message goes through this time around.

I'm installing a USB keyboard on the iMac for my spouse. When we plugged it in
the first time, the keyboard identification utility came up and I followed the
instructions.

It did recognize the keyboard but none of the function keys spoke when using
the VO K command to identify them. Only the F12 and VO F8 keys seemed to work.

On the Apple bluetooth keyboard all keys worked as usual.

The USB keyboard I was installing works on either Windows or Mac and the other
keys for Mac identified readily and work fine.

It seems as if any Usb keyboard I install now has this issue.

Any wisdom out there about this?

Zoom and mouse question

2014-02-19 Thread Jenine Stanley
A Zoom question for the spouse.

He was vexed by the mouse seeming to dock itself in the upper left corner of
the screen. He's a big mouse user. Anyone have experience using the mouse with
Zoom and VO? Where do we go to get it to track the screen cursor? I know I've
seen that option somewhere.

Thanks.

USB keyboard issues

2014-02-19 Thread Jenine Stanley
I'm trying to install a USB keyboard and when it is connected and I complete
the keyboard installation utility, the function keys no longer announce
themselves as they do with the Apple Bluetooth keyboard.

This seems then to carry over to any USB keyboard I attach. I then did the
really stupid thing of turning on the Apple Bluetooth keyboard and let's just
say that things went downhill from there.

All has been restored but I'm still curious about the function keys not working
or speaking as they do with the Apple keyboard. All other Apple keys work fine.
The USB keyboard I'm attaching works with either Windows or Mac.

I'd grabbed Amadeus Lite to see what it was like and I think I need the Pro

quite work on my version of Amadeus Lite.

Amadeus Pro question

2014-02-21 Thread Jenine Stanley
I have question about Amadeus Pro.

When I open the program I'm on a screen from which I can apparently record as
I've done so. When I try to edit though, I can do one edit but then my audio
doesn't seem to play. I also can't use the arrow keys to forward or rewind or
change pitch/speed during play. Am I on the wrong screen?

Also, is there a list specifically for Amadeus and blind users? Thanks!

This is true about the USB mouse. My husband just plugged in several of his to
see which he liked best as he didn't like the Magic Mouse that came with the
iMac. They just worked. I think one needed a driver but it was easily found
with the wizard that came up when the mouse was plugged in. husband

help with a few commands

2014-02-26 Thread Jenine Stanley
Hi All,

I am forgetting or just never really knew, the commands to do the following.

Go to top of a screen or web page.
Go to bottom of a screen or web page.
Go to top of a mail message and bottom of said message.

I'll take either the VO commands or the general Mac commands or both.

Thanks.

Quick way to get the time

When I do use Windows, I use Window-Eyes and there is a quick command, insert-t

Right now I use the dashboard to get this info plus the current local weather

Remote Desktop applications and Voice Over

2014-03-03 Thread Jenine Stanley
Anyone out there using a Mac and Remote Desktop to access applications?

I have two programs I need to access for work that run using Remote Desktop for
both windows and Mac. In Windows these programs are inaccessible due to server
restrictions on adding the screen reader needed. Anyone know how this works in
Mac OS world?

If Voice Over would work with Remote Desktop and these applications, it would
be pretty much ground breaking for my job and that of my blind coworker.

Thanks.

team viewer question

All,

more on remote desktop

2014-03-04 Thread Jenine Stanley
I'm thinking that maybe I'm beating a very dead horse here but I tried logging
into my work server using Remote Desktop Connect. this worked fine but of
course no speech on the remote screen.

I'm assuming that some type of screen reader must be installed on the server
side in order for any remote desktop access to work, be it windows or Mac?

If anyone is using Team Viewer to log into a work server, please let me know
how that works and what I need to get from my IT person in order to do this. I
get the whole computer to computer thing with Team viewer. We do that all the
time at work for things. It works well too. That said, logging into a server is
apparently a bit different.

Thanks to all who actually do this. Sadly these are some of the skills we need
today to be productive in the workplace and I'm not seeing much beyond basic
computer operation in so many vocational settings. then again, don't get me on
that soapbox. :)

access to remote computers with Remote Desktop

2014-03-05 Thread Jenine Stanley
The good people at Apple Accessibility have gotten back to my many questions
about Remote Desktop. Basically VO won't read the remote screens using this
program.

I did not ask about Team Viewer in a server environment.

I've used Team Viewer on Windows machines before and know it does work computer
to computer but don't know about server access with it. If anyone does, give me
a private shout but for those looking at Remote Desktop, sorry.

I did let the Apple folks know that this kind of access is very important to
many of us in the workplace so if they could make it happen, that would be
huge.

Re: access to remote computers with Remote Desktop

2014-03-06 Thread Jenine Stanley
Alex, I'm assuming this would work just fine, using Team Viewer between 2
computers and being able to hear what's going on with the remote machine using
VO. It works fine that way in Windows when I've used it.

I see there's also a way to connect to a server using team Viewer but I'm still
playing with that one.

Re: Still Some Pretty Severe Bugs in Mavericks

2014-03-06 Thread Jenine Stanley
I was setting up mail for my husband on the iMac today and had to hammer at it
for a while but that's honestly the first time I've seen anything close to a
bug or something not working as advertised.

Not that this isn't happening for others, granted, but given the fights I've
had with my Windows machine today over server access, email and transferring
files, give me a Mavericks bug. :)

Amadeus question

2014-03-09 Thread Jenine Stanley
I'm finishing up a project in amadeus Pro in which I have 3 separate
files/documents and I want to turn them into 1 document by adding them
together. I thought I could just go to the end of each file and append the next
document but this is proving more difficult than I thought. Maybe I should do
it in reverse, adding the earlier files to the beginning of each file as that
seems to be where they end up regardless of what I do.

Any thoughts?

moving to text on web pages

2014-03-12 Thread Jenine Stanley
OK, either I'm not doing something right or I don't know the correct term but
how can I move from one bit of text to another on a web site? Let's say I want
to skip the links and such and just read the text bits between, oh say,
headings. Text boxes doesn't seem to work from the rotor.

Thanks.

copying a url to the clipboard

2014-03-13 Thread Jenine Stanley
I know that in Windows you can fairly easily copy a url to the clipboard by
using alt-d to get to the address bar then control-c to copy.

Is there a way to do this in Safari? With Voice over?

I do this often to share web sites with people and was just wondering.

Prismo for Mac

2014-03-14 Thread Jenine Stanley
Is anyone using the Prismo app for the Mac? I got my scanner hooked up and
running but for some reason even after enabling some of the accessibility
features in the app, I'm not hearing the scanned text or able to see where it
puts the OCR version.

Thanks.

braille production on the Mac

2014-03-15 Thread Jenine Stanley
What software do folks use for braille production on the Mac? I'd like
something that interfaces with say, Pages, rather than a stand alone program
but I'll entertain anything.

I use an Embraille braille printer.

tagging people in Facebook

2014-03-16 Thread Jenine Stanley
OK so I've been told that if you put the # symbol before a name in an FB post,
that will tag the person. For some reason it only adds a "link" to the first
word.

Also, when I use the Tag people in your posts feature, it doesn't tag them but
says I'm with them.

What am I doing wrong? :)

Using Safari and Mavericks on the FB Mobile site. Otherwise I love the
interaction,

Thanks!

Re: stopping programs from launching at start

2014-03-22 Thread Jenine Stanley
Well, this just got a little more complicated but possibly I might have the
answer.

So bringing up the Mac today I had Amadeus open at start. I went first to the
dock to see if the checkbox Tim mentioned was checked. Nope.

Then I went to System Preferences and tried Alex's method but the only programs
listed there were iTunes helper and DropBox.

All righty then. I closed Amadeus and will now restart the machine to see what
happens if it's not left open when I shut down. that may be the answer.

Again, thanks all for your wisdom. It truly and sincerely doesn't cease to
amaze me how helpful this list can be.

database app for Mac

2014-03-26 Thread Jenine Stanley
I'm looking for a database app for Mac that will import CSV files. and that is
of course accessible with VO. Any suggestions?

Right now on the windows machine I use Excel's "table" feature which used to be
called "list". this allows a spreadsheet to be turned into a database with each
row being a record. If there is such a feature in Numbers, that would be even
better than a separate database program as I'm not doing major database type
things, just moving and editing records.

Re: spell check primer

2014-03-29 Thread Jenine Stanley
If you use Quick Nav, turn it off to use spell check features as outlined in
all the instructions you are about to receive.

Once Quick Nav is turned off, then down arrow once. If this does not yield the
suggestion list, left arrow until back into the misspelled word then down arrow
once. If there's more than one suggestion, right arrow, which is totally
counterintuitive to what you do in Windows spell check. When you find the
suggestion you want, hit enter.

Hope that helps.

Also, when using the listed keyboard commands, do you have to be interacting

IOS apps and TV access

2014-03-30 Thread Jenine Stanley
So we are going to buy a new, or at least new for us, TV. We're looking at a
Samsung 55=inch, don't know the exact model but it's last year's hot Samsung
TV.

The salesperson, in typical salesperson hype, said that it has Apple TV built
in. How does this work?

Can I control it through my phone or MBP?

He said there was an app, Samsung Smart Remorte, or something like that. anyone
used this?

Accessibility thoughts? the regular remote that comes with the TV scares me
enough. Is there a universal remote app I can use with Samsung TVs?

Help! :)

Re: Stability of the Mac

2014-04-01 Thread Jenine Stanley
This is an interesting question. From just an average user point of view, I
have been using my MacBook Pro since early February and use a Windows laptop
for work. They literally sit side by side on my desk.

I had used the iPhone since 2011 so was sort of familiar with how VoiceOver
works and love it on the IOS platform that said, it's very different on the Mac
or OS side.

Speaking first to stability, I managed to crash the MBP twice in the first week
but literally have not made the speech stop since then. Has my MBP slowed down
or acted strangely a few times without explanation? yes, but it's come back to
its original performance soon after these fits.

My Windows machine frequently hangs up both in the operating system in general
and because of screen reader/video issues. Outlook is really bad about this and
I usually have to reboot at least once a day. Yes, I maintain my Windows
machine well with weekly cleaning and such but ...

The one thing that you will find difficult at first but which, if you continue
to plug away at it will soon become second nature, is the whole concept of
interacting with things. I hated it at first and still am not fond of it.
Unlike the IOS realm, you have to take an extra step to access some things
using Voice Over. Once you get used to it though and combine Quick Nav with the
regular VO operation, and ask this list a ton of stupid questions, :) you'll be
fine.

I really like the variety of quality voices available with VO too. It's fast
and responsive. I'm sold. Be sure though to give yourself some time and be
patient. Beprepared to read over and over any and all instructions, podcasts
and other things about switching, commands and apps.

getting to someone's email address

2014-04-04 Thread Jenine Stanley
How would I find out the email address of someone in a message to copy it and
use it somewhere else?

Here's the situation. The "to" line of a mail message has the address from
which the person sent the email but all I see is a name.

When using Outlook for example, I could go up into the header and grab the
email address. I went into message header in Mail and didn't see this detail
but I think I'm missing it somehow.

Thanks.

Thanks buddy. I knew I wasn't getting some detail here.

By now I should know that VO-Shift-M is my friend when in doubt. :)

recommendations for a good USB mic

2014-04-04 Thread Jenine Stanley
I'd like some recommendations for a good USB mic for my MBP. I don't have a
mixer currently and don't plan to get one just yet but need a decent mic.

Thanks.

Prismo frustrations

2014-04-07 Thread Jenine Stanley
OK, I'm still struggling with Prismo for OCR and I honestly can't figure out
what I'm doing or not doing. My scanner is apparently hooked up correctly and
recognized but I can't seem to just put something on it and have Prismo just
scan and read it.

If anyone is using Prismo, please shoot me a private email so I can pick your
brain off list.

mostly fixed my Prismo issues

2014-04-08 Thread Jenine Stanley
It turns out that one of my issues with Prismo was that it wasn't recognizing
my scanner due to a bad installation.

I went in and cleaned out the scanners part of Printers and Scanners under
System Preferences, reinstalled the scanner and Voila!

Prismo is a bit clunky imho but it does work. I need to adjust the parameters
for dpi as 600 doesn't really give me enough to get good recognition from the
several items I've tried thus far.

Does this app automatically adjust page orientation? I heard somewhere it does
