so because of stupid drm copy write crap the blind can't read the ebooks?
On 3/22/2012 6:30 PM, Esther wrote:

Hi Jeff,

There are a number of ebook apps that specifically disable VoiceOver's
ability to access the content in order to preserve digital rights
management. This is also true if you try to use the Barnes & Noble
Nook app, for example. You'll notice that usually you can access
everything except for the actual content of the text. That's being
blocked. You can verify this by taking a screen capture, and sending
the results to an OCR app like Prizmo or TextGrabber. The OCR app
will tell you what the contents are, but obviously you're not going to
read the book by screen capturing every page and sending it to an OCR app.

If you want to read another example of this viewpoint, that the
ability of screen readers to access text would promote copyright
violation, take a look at Greg Kearney's posted response from
Fictionwise in the archives, sent in reply to his inquiry about ebook
accessibility for their ebook reading app just a few months after the
iPhone 3GS was released with VoiceOver support:

looking at a screen, or having the screen read to you.

I went to the length of finding the Authors' Guild website and
constructing a polite, but furious, message to them, pointing out some
of the things already raised here and also that they would get a lot
of sales from blind people who might buy a book on the Kindle terms,
but probably wouldn't buy an audio book, mostly because of the cost. I
spent some time making sure I got the tone right.

Then I tried to send it Guess what? They had a ***ing image captcha on

Hi Ray,

You're correct that the policy of blocking VoiceOver access to eBook content in
the Kindle app arises from the Author's Guild suit, but the guild is mostly
worried about readers who are not visually impaired making use of these
text-to-speech capabilities to listen to ebooks instead of buying audiobooks.
It's the very fact that Apple has been building in VoiceOver capabilities into
every iOS device and computer that constitutes the danger, from their point of
view. That's why a Kindle app for the PC, that can be used with screen readers
like JAWS, has been released, but there is no similar application for the Mac.
If the only way that you could access the Kindle ebook content on your computer
was by investing in blindness-specific software that equals or exceeds the cost
of your computer, it's pretty hard to argue that you configured your machine
this way just to avoid buying the audiobook versions. But the fact that every
iPhone, iPod Touch, an iPad now support VoiceOver, and that the same is true
for every Mac, means that any user of an iPhone, Mac, etc. could enable
VoiceOver functionality in reading Kindle ebooks, if this capability were not
explicitly blocked.

And so, if you carry the argument of the Author's Guild to its natural conclusion,
non-visually impaired Kindle customers who find VoiceOver's reading "good
enough" to listen to, will turn on this feature instead of buying audiobook versions
that they would otherwise purchase.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Facetime is accessible, and I can confirm it because I use it so often. As soon
as another friend of ours gets an iphone, we no longer use the regular phones
anymore. Facetime sounds very good and it's a breeze to use.
By the way: if you have an iPhone, you use FaceTime and you don't want others
to see you, although facetime is a video plus audio service, you can still turn
off your local camera that sends your looks to the other party. Just press home
on your iPhone. Facetime will continue to go, but from then on, you're only
transmitting audio, and your receiving party will see a cross through his
remote camera, which is you. It saves battery. To return to facetime, if you
want to send video again, look in the status bar on the right. You'll see a
button called: return to facetime. This also means that you can go to other
apps, for example to look up an address for your friend if you like, and then
return to facetime so you can later disconnect your call.
On the mac, I find the interface a little more difficult, but because facetime
is on every mac and iphone, and on several other i devices, no configuration is
needed. If your contact list on the phone or on the mac contains the mobile
number and or the apple ID email address of your other party, then you're good
to go.

Happy wekend all!
Does anyone out there know how to work with Garage Band?
I am trying to throw a little jingle together and when I add
different sounds they all get placed at the same point in the
timeline so they all play at once. It's not even the beginning
either. There is like 15 seconds of silence then all the noise.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to write me off list.

when I go to hanks iphone

when I check some of the eppisodes under tv shows it syncs, it also
isn't syncing all of the shows that I check.

any ideas on what could be ghoing wrong?
I have never usually ran in to a problem doing this and so this is

Hi all.
I've found 2 things so far that haven't been fixed in Mountain Lion.
1. Tables in documents. These still appear to not work properly with VoiceOver.
VO still announces new line new line when I
tried this just now.
2. Web page selection. This still doesn't work. I know that the web page
scrolls when I move with the arrow keys, but
VoiceOver is still not reporting that the page is scrolling.
I think I'll be sending these findings to Apple Accessibility to see what they
have to say about these really old issues.
Sorry to spoil the good mood of the new OS launch, Matthew Campbell.

arrows. That should move you down in the same column and not push back to the
beginning of the row or any of that. Keep in mind that as you get to the
bottom of a column, pressing VO-down arrow will wrap you back to the top row
and I think, advances you to the next column. To get out of the table, Just
get to the upper left or lower right corner of the table and then use normal
VO-left or VO-right to move you on outside the table. For me, tables
automatically interact when you land on them. I can't remember if that is
always the case, default or if I set an option; sorry.

Hope this helps.

Hi everyone!
First, I thought I'd respond to the discussion on tables. The one I encounter

item. When I'm on the first column of a row, the VO-R command also reads the
whole row to me. I can't figure out how to bop straight down a column though.
But at least the information is all there.
And I so appreciate those of you who reported the apparent bug here. I was
beginning to think I was losing my mind. I just can't seem to quite figure out
where I land and when I need to interact and when I don't. I don't remember
having this issue in Lion but granted, I only used it a little bit because I
was waiting for Mountain Lion before really getting going on this Macbook.
The other thing I've apparently lost track of is how to quickly do a google
search. I have figured out that if I open Safari and just stay on the tool bar,
I can type a url or a search term. I then VO-right-arrow to the html content
area where I interact. But it sure seemed to me that there was a keystroke or
something that went easily into that google search. But I just can't find it
anywhere.
But boy I'd sure love a good tutorial and demo of really using Safari in ML. I
did create an activity which turns on Quick Nav when I go into Safari, and I
was afraid that this was what was messing up my browsing experience.
So I will await further news and see how far I get in the meantime. But thanks
so much to all of you who are so on top of all of this stuff. I look forward to
doing my part to pay forward. In the meantime, I'm open to all Safari
suggestions. Thanks.

takes longer to complain about the idea than it does to do it! I do
hope Apple does allow it to be built in, but even if they never do I
love this app and it is absolutely worth it. Besides, the copy part
takes less than 2 seconds because you bring up the menu and double tap
copy. It coppies the entire text. Then you go paste wherever. If you
are doing a text message or a new email then you don't even have to do
that much. You just double tap that choice from the menu and then
address your message and send.

It really is fast enough to coppy and paste, and still be faster than
trying to write out something on the normal keyboard.
I look at it as another option to dictation if you have it.
Just leave Fleksy open, and if you need to type something, use the app

I'm glad I gave it a chance.

Re: update for Vmware Fusion available - not looking like anything new in the accessibility department

Matthew,

One thing that was really interesting is that you can run Lion, SL, or even
Leopard. I don't know that this is entirely knew, but certainly new that it is
mentioned up front. The only bummer part of this is I have not found a way to
get VO to behave. I cannot turn VO on the host off and effectively control VO
in the VM. If I could do this, I would have some interesting options. So, if
anyone does figure this out let us know. SOmething tells me it won't be
particularly easy. Now I did notice that I could toggle VO in the VM on/off
without affecting the host machine, but where I encountered problems was if I
wanted to use VO navigation controls in the VM, VO on the host machine would be
affected. Complicated? Yeah, a little, but ah the potential.

I've updated and it doesn't look like theres anything new in the accessibility
department. I personally think that this is okay. I've always found Fusion easy
to use to get done the work that I need to do in windows.
There is however a new shortcut that can be used to put the VM in to full
screen mode. It is Control Command F. The older keystroke can still be used if
you wish as well. When you put the VM in to full screen, VO gets really chatty
about what space you are in so be prepared for that.
Anyway, I hope this helps someone.
Sorry if you are seeing this information twice.

as the VO key combination (Control+option) this using a mac so just apply that
principle when using the program. It still has a way to go but it works. I have
listened to a radio play and a part of a movie without any problem. I am not
able to access the Chrome menu using control+f2) so if anon knows how this
might be done without turning VO back on I would like to know.

I also like the interactive tutorial that has been developed for google chrome.

It has been fun playing around with it.

Hi,

If you have your devices syncing through iCloud, as you fix them on the
iPhone, they will fix the related items within iCloud. Similarly, if you
fix these items on your Mac in AddressBook, they will automatically be fixed
on your iPhone. You can confirm this by going to the other device and
checking it. That is, if you did the corrections on the iPhone,, just go to
your Mac and take a look in AddressBook and the same items should also be
fixed there. Again, this only is relevant if you have the same iCloud
account on both devices and you have Contact syncing turned on.

I have Navagon. It works ok with VO, but, as someone this list said you will
need to label three buttons on it.

However, I like the Sendero app for a couple of things because it is a simpler
program so I can get the info faster. It is limited and is not supposed to be
right now a full fledged GPS program. I use it for locating the bus stop while
I'm on the bus because when you call up the program you just have double or
split tap on the Nearest Cross Street button. It is also very fast for the
nearest points of interest.

I really basically don't like GPS programs for the sighted for us. It makes me
crazy to have to bypass information like maps that I could care less about.
Also, I haven't figured out if Navagon has a pedestrian mode or not. I really
hope that Sendero will someday be able to put their program in a full-fledged
mode for the iPhone. They told me that they wanted to but that they had to get
some funding for more develpment.

I don't believe there is a jailbreak currently available for the iPhone 4S, and
this video was uploaded before it was possible to run Siri on a non-4S device.
So no, it is not. You do need to implement certain solutions to make sure the
iPhone sends Siri requests through the proxy instead of straight to Apple's
servers, but a jailbreak is not required to accomplish this.

It's worth noting that getting this all up and running, and developing
plug-ins, is not a straight forward process. A lot of the documentation is
really only suited to people who are familiar with Linux, software such as
DNSMasq, etc., and if you do manage to get it working, you'll need to know how
to program in Ruby in order to develop your own plug-ins.

Hope that helps.

Hey Daniel,

I have found that Hand Break is an accessible program with Voiceover.
It is free, and it works quite well for ripping DVD protected content to
your computer.
The ripping process takes roughly about an hour or less (depending on
length
of DVD). The ripped image is placed on the desktop as an MP4 file,
which you

can copy into the "Automatically add to iTunes"
folder. Once loading iTunes, the file will successfully import into the
movies category.

its that or go with straightalk for 45.00 but there is a few extra steps

dollars to get it set up with i am trying to avoid at the present.
I am also wanting to find a vo friendly app that would allow me to track

Re: 3 iphone 3gs questions

2012-01-23 Thread Hank Smith

Hello let me know what you find.
I just don't want to have to sign a 2 year contract for a iphone that I
got used. I would rather go month to month on voice and data, or data
only and use voip or something. either way I want to go month to month.
if I went the straighttalk method for 45.95 for everything I would have
to spend another 50.00 to get a smart phone that supported the proper
config file eg the nokia e71
activate the phone on straighttalk, remove the sim and put it in iphone,
then email a config file for 3g its a bit more detailed on getting it
set up with straighttalk and a bit more costly onissially but is another
rout if I can't go month to month via atnt
btw here is the article that tells how to activate any atnt iphone on
straightalk

Re: 3 iphone 3gs questions

Hello where do I need to go to get the prepaid plan?

Hey Hank,

Unfortunately iOS cannot offer a level of flexibility such as one that can
permit the use of the kind of apps you are looking for.

Apple offers Find my iPhone and it might be enough for the type of scenarios you
describe. If your phone ever gets stolen, make sure you first track your iPhone,
then call AT&T to disable your account, as data is necessary to report the GPS
position of the phone.

In regards to AT&T, I use a prepaid unlimited talk and text for $50. I then add a
$25 data package for 500MB and use a configuration profile to get my iPhone 4S rocking
and rolling on the AT&T data network.
I use prepaid because I regularly commute between the US and Switzerland and
hate being stuck on contracts.

All the best,

its that or go with straightalk for 45.00 but there is a few extra steps in

I am also wanting to find a vo friendly app that would allow me to track my

you can go in to the sound menu and devide the file according to the markers.
This opens up a window where you can choose what format you want each segment

Hello Sarai ,

There are many different ways to do this on the mac. I'll outline for you how
I do it. First I have a regular tape deck on a stereo so I purchased the
Griffin iMike. this usb device lets you plug in the output from your stereo or
from a mike directly into your computer. So once you plug a cable with the
input into the Mike you will select the setting on the Mike for powered or
unpowered. for a stereo it is unpowered. I use a cable with two RCA plugs
attached to the tape output and on the other end a standard 35 millimeter jack
like the one on headphones for the iPhone.

Next I use Amadeus pro. With that program you can input the tape then edit
tracks and much more. I then save in the format of my choice and my tapes are
now digital.

I do the same thing for vinyl records.

There is a slightly outdated podcast on blindcooltech.com I think I called it
Amadeus Pro Vinyl to CD. It covers a lot of the Amadeus Pro basics.

If you have a USB tape player then you will not need the Griffin iMike.

Hope this helps.

I am using bootcamp windows 7 to send the email.
I am running latest version off the website a imac intel
it doesn't talk it says like a sillable.
it then sounds like a click or bomg or something I really can't discribe
it but it doesn't talk and does like a click click click or something
like that
it could possibly be blinking? I have a little bit of light preception
in my write eye and it looks like it is blinking as well.

not sure if this is making any sense.
I tried the hiphop voice if this is any help.
as far as it being activated before I switched the voice I went to the
manager and hit the space bar to view the sample and it said this is a
evaluation voice and then the name of the voice I installed.
I figured sense it said this it was a evaluation voice it was in in demo
mode.

Have you ever wanted to watch TV with audio description but can't get the track
on your tv? Well, now you can...sort of. Have a look at this.
http://www.blindy.tv
This project was created so that everyone could watch TV episodes with audio
description. Every show (except the brain channel) has described content. You
can switch channels just like with an actual TV. So far,
their are 5 channels. Comedy, Drama, Si-fi, Brain and ETC. More may be added if
needed. Each show is either 30 or 60 minutes long. After the show their are
commercials (better than on TV, I can promise you that), a news segment or
comedy skit, and some instrumental music at the top and bottom of each hour.
To access this place, you can do one of two things: You can either go to the
website linked above and used the web players, or, if you'd rather listen in
your media player of choice, place this link into it.
This will load all channels, and you can use the next and previous controls to
move through the different channels.

Please give any suggestions or criticisms you have. Feedback is always welcome.
If you like the service, let us know. If you do not, tell us what we could do
to fix it up. Please spread the word if you like it.

Actually if you google it's about the fourth or fifth one down and,
while the website you went to does a good job of hiding the

Re: Jailbreak iPhone 4S

On 1/30/2013 8:58 PM, Raul A. Gallegos wrote:
Hello Krysti, I may have some information for you. Also, Mauricio, the
question wasn't about what you lose if you jailbreak, but whether it
could be done.

Anyway, jailbreaking iOS 6.0 or 6.01 is not really possible right now
if you want untethered, and believe me when I say that untethered is
the way to go. Otherwise you will be depending on a tethered
jailbreak, and it means you have to connect your phone to the computer
and run software when it reboots. Additionally, there has been a very
difficult time of it from the hackers on getting it working right. So,
the good news is that if you wait for the long-awaited untethered
jailbreak for iOS 6.1, it's a good chance it will be made available
this Sunday. Now, to address some of the other things which came up in
this thread.

If you have a new iPhone and it came with iOS 6, you can't downgrade.
This is because of Apple signing each firmware installation for your
phone. I don't understand the specifics, but if you Google for shsh
blobs, it will give a better description for it. I have been able to
downgrade in the past before, but that was because I had saved my shsh
blobs from a prior iOS version.

The question I see come up often is if jailbreaking is worth it. I
mean, you lose Apple tech support, and supposedly void your warranty
if you have one. If you find that you need to have your device
serviced, then you can restore and go back to the current iOS and it
will be unjailbroken. Of course you will lose your settings and
jailbreak apps, but that's a risk you take when you go for the
jailbreak path. I just realized I didn't answer my own question on if
jailbreaking is right or not. Like with all things in life, it depends
on the user and whether said user wants to trade in the warranty for
certain conveniences. Or even more importantly, it highly depends on
whether jailbreaking will enhance the user experience for the specific
user.

I'll give an example, if you have been using the iPhone unjailbroken
and it's met your needs, or you are really concerned about tech
support from Apple and/or warranty service, then jailbreaking isn't
for you. If you aren't concerned about their tech support or warranty,
but you don't need the enhancements that jailbreaking provides, then
again, jailbreaking may not be for you. I teach new users how to use
the iPhone and even though I'm a huge jailbreak fan, I don't recommend
it to my clients unless they ask about it first, and only if they feel
they really need it.

I could go on and on about all the cool things you can do extra with a
jailbroken iPhone, but the list would be too long. Suffice it to say
that even though I'm using iOS 5.1.1 still on my 4S, I'm enjoying most
of the iOS 6 features due to some sort of jailbreak enhancement. The
one feature I will mention here is probably 80% of the reason why I
jailbreak in the first place. I'm a Google Voice user, and I have
totally integrated my Google Voice number so that even tapping on
phone numbers in text messages or web pages or apps, will use my GV
number to call the tapped number. Furthermore, sending and receiving
text messages using my Google Voice number is seamless and can be done
through the messages app. These are things you cannot do unless you
jailbreak.

So, bottom line, I truly hope that untethered iOS 6.1 jailbreak will
come out, but if it doesn't, I'll be sticking with iOS 5.1.1 for a bit
longer.

Thank you for letting me know that, Alex. I use a different pandora app on the

First, Piano Pub ver 1.5 is working ok in Mountain Lion. However, this is the

1. Does anyone know if there is a way to pause the music, I can't find
anything in the menus or by tabbing around. there doesn't seem to be a help
file or hotkeys either. I did figure out how to move from station to station,
but, it's a little strange. Apparently, you have to hit the left mouse button
twice to change the selected station, that's a little odd. I need to hit
VO-shift-spacebar twice which, as I understand it, is the same as a left mouse
click, I find it weird that you have to have 2 of them.

Also, there are several unlabeled buttons, I can probably figure it out by
trial and error, but, if someone knows the order of those buttons, I would
appreciate some help, thanks.

I know there is a GV widgit, and I also know there are some programs
you can get where you put the number to call, then it rings you back
on one of your forwarding lines, but I literally want like a soft
phone or something of the sort. You're supposed to be able to get GV
to work through Google Talk, which of corse does work in Adium, but I
never could get that to work. Even after enabling it, it wouldn't
send anything across that Adium saw. So, yeah, I'd like something I
could go both ways, inbound and outbound without having to use a
phone. I know there is Skype, but I specifically wanna do this with GV.

Thanks.

Chris.
