Periodic Beep Is Back After Upgrade

2022-05-28 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
I updated my Intel Mac Mini to the latest Monterey this morning. I am
getting that periodic beep-chime and I can't seem to get rid of it.

VO+N tells me no notifications; and on a second press tells me no
announcements.

I'm flummoxed (and annoyed) yet again. Seems like some settings aren't
honored on upgrades, as this was not the case pre upgrade.

All suggestions much appreciated!

Try pressing VO + F1 twice quickly to open the application windows menu,
and see if there are some system dialogs up.

Hi,

Have you tried using the window chooser? When this happens to me, usually I can
find the thing that’s causing the problem by going into the window chooser.
Hope this helps.

In my experience, that's generally the issue - typically a dialogue
prompting for a password.

Re: Periodic Beep Is Back After Upgrade

2022-05-28 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Yes, forgot about pressing that combination twice in quick order.

There was a legacy extension dialog. That reminds me that I've heard
messages previously following upgrades, about some Oracle support due to
be removed.

Wonder whether this might be leftover from my playing around with
Virtual Box? I can't think of anything else I've installed that was
using Oracle anything.

At least the annoyance is gone! That's paramount, so thanks for that.

Hi,
When I hear the beep which indicates that there is a system alert I need to
attend to I go to the application chooser by hitting option F. I made a
keyboard commander because it was quick and easy and these system alerts often
show up on my M1 MacBook Pro.

dimmed

2022-05-28 Thread Lorie McCloud
I've been looking at the privacy settings in Apple mail on my Mac. when
something is dimmed that appears to mean I can't interact with it. there's a
box I'd like to check that's dimmed. how do I deal with that?

thanks.

There is no lock in that section. When an item is dimmed, it usually

Re: Periodic Beep Is Back After Upgrade

2022-05-28 Thread 'Nichole Keck' via MacVisionaries
You have a system dialogue on your screen. You have to hold down VO and press
F1 twice to bring up the window chooser. If you haven’t changed your function
keys, you will need to add the FN key to that. Then down arrow to where it
says system dialogues and press enter or VO space and arrow to the actual
window and press VO space or enter again. You will then be able to dismiss the
dialogue. That beep is alerting you that there is a system dialogue on the
screen wanting your attention. Trust me I’ve had this happen several times,
and until I asked on a WhatsApp group I’m on, and someone told me, I didn’t
know either.

Re: Safari incredibly sluggish

2022-05-28 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Well, that command is listed in the development section. When systems are
working as designed, there should not be a need to empty caches.
A caches I a place where the computer stores information that it might need
quicker than can be obtained normally. For web sites, this is generally a the
last 1000 or so files downloaded for web site usage. The computer should be
pruning the cache regularly so that it stays efficient.
The reason this is in the developers area is that sometimes you are changing a
large script library that has a extended expiration date and you want to use
the new version. Consider if facebook was updated you might not get the feature
immediately after it is release, because you have a cache of the resources that
your browser needs to run facebook. So emptying the cache would require that
your browser download the latest from the network.
Web sites can also store local databases and cookies on your computer, and I
expect that emptying the trash will not fix any issues with large items in
there. For that you need to use the Safari preferences.
It could be good for security, privacy and performance to occasionally (once a
year?) clear web data on your computer. Note that doing this will probably mean
that every site that you are currently auto-logged into will need to be logged
into again.
To do this
open Safari preferences and switch to the Privacy tab and then click on "Manage
website data" button. This will give you a table with every website that is
storing items on your computer. You can clear out items that are selected in
the table, and there is also a button to clear everything out.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Hello,
If you clicked on the "help" button at the bottom of this settings file you
would get to help about this panel.
In this help there is a table telling you what the three checkboxes are.
The description for the first checkbox says:
Hide your IP address from senders and privately download remote content in the
background when a message is received (instead of when you view it). This
option prevents senders from collecting information when you view a message,
such as when and how many times you view it, whether you forward it, your IP
address, and other data. If you deselect this option, you can choose to
separately hide your IP address and prevent remote content in a message from
being downloaded until you choose to do so. column 2 of 2
Note the last item says you can only control the other checkboxes when this
checkbox is unchecked.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn
