Re: Conflict between sending mail from mac and receiving on a PC

2022-01-16 Thread joseph hodge
Dave suggestion is really good and that could be the cause although I’m not
sure if you did that and sent that message just a bit ago. The other thought I
had was it could be a font issue. I have this issue come up once when using Mac
while at work while others were on windows. I had a font that some folks didn’t
have. Wondering if it could be that?

2022-01-16 Thread Brad Snyder
I've never experienced any issue with fonts, but I don't use any fancy fonts
either.
When using the Mail app on my Mac, I use Helvetica which is the standard font.
When using Outlook on my PC, I use Ariel, also a standard font.
I use the native mail app on my iPhone, and whatever is The default font is
what is used.

RE: Conflict between sending mail from mac and receiving on a PC

2022-01-16 Thread Brad Snyder
I have tested reading this message on both my Mac and my PC using Outlook
(latest Microsoft365), as well as my iPhone, with no issues reading the
message. I am writing this reply using Outlook on my PC. My Outlook is set to
compose in HTML, using Arial 12 pt. font. My Outlook is set to read both HTML
and Plain Text messages, using Arial 12 pt. font.

I'd like to say that the issue has to do with settings on the receiving
computer's mail client, but since you say this issue is being experienced by
all who receive your messages on Windows, I tend to doubt it is due to a
setting on the receiving end, and not the sending end.

I am interested in feedback on if this message is able to be read on a Windows
PC without issue.

Re: Conflict between sending mail from mac and receiving on a PC

2022-01-16 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Often, as VO users, the testing of reading vs visible to the sighted user is
awkward. The font size could be so small that a sighted user won’t be able to
read it, but VO doesn’t care as it is simply taking the text and voicing it.
Similarly, if the font colour was the same as the background, the sighted
person won’t be able to read the text where VO again reads just fine. One of
the few advantages to using VO :).

I also do not believe that HTML vs Plain Text should make any difference. Font
could be a factor, although so many fonts nowadays are standard in most OS’s.

Later…

Hi,

If Trackpad Commander is off, then doing the three finger double-tap will do
nothing. Prior to doing the three finger double-tap, hold down the VO keys and
twist two fingers clockwise on the trackpad to make sure Trackpad Commander is
actually enabled.

Tim brings up good points, however, even if the font size is very small and
cannot be seen by a sighted individual, a screen reader on windows should still
be able to read the message.

Hello,
if you use a braille display this can be toggled with the M chord. If not, the
only way I know to toggle without changing default voiceover settings is with
the trackpad commander and three finger double tap.

2022-01-16 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,
I used to experience something like this in reverse. My father used to send me
emails that I could read with voiceover but anybody else in thee family said
were completely blank. He wcomposed his messages with High Contrast mode on the
windows system. If one used vo-T to query information about the text
attributes it would tell me that it was white on white.
HTH!

Re: Voiceover On, Speech Off -- Yet Again

2022-01-16 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
Yes, in my experience, the “speech off” message means VoiceOver is muted and
you have to unmute it with one of the commands described in this thread. I do
this with M-chord from a braille display.

Subject: Re: Voiceover On, Speech Off -- Yet Again
Hello,
if you use a braille display this can be toggled with the M chord. If not, the
only way I know to toggle without changing default voiceover settings is with
the trackpad commander and three finger double tap.

Best wishes,

Using sudo with Touch ID on a Mac

2022-01-16 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
In case this helps anyone else, I’ve found out how to enable Touch ID with the
sudo command on Mac OS. When enabled, running sudo opens a dialogue prompting
you to use Touch ID or to activate a button to prompt for your password.

As root, go to /etc/pam.d and change the permissions of the sudo file
temporarily with
chmod 644 sudo
then run your preferred text editor, and insert the following below the first
line of the file:
auth sufficient pam_tid.so
Then, obviously, save the file and change the permissions back with “chmod 444
sudo”.
Finally, without exiting the root shell, open another terminal window with
Command-N and run sudo -i to test it. You can revert the change if it doesn’t
work as intended (without locking yourself out of root access).

Thanks, Jonathan. I do have an Orbit Reader available, though I don't
recall whether I ever associated it with my Mac Air. Nevertheless, this
gives me a path forward, even if I need to arrange for sighted
assistance. Right now the Orbit is charging, indicating how little I use
it I'm sorry to say.

 Hi Donna,

Yes, I found that horribly early this morning when I was supposed to be
sleeping. That’s what happens when you get old. Odd sleep patterns, and
remember things in the middle of the night. Anyway, you need to put the
watch on the charger to get it to download the new Siri voice. I also
think that if you’re using the Siri voice, then you probably don’t need
any extra languages in the rotor.

 Hi,

I think what you want to do is the two finger twist right or left to
get to the language setting. Once on languate single finger swipe up
or down to make your selection.

I found this out one day when my watch changed to a language I don't
 know.

RE: How to change Voiceover voice on Apple Watch

2022-01-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Donna and All,

Okay, first I understand that your solution to your original questions, Donna,
was to enable Siri on your watch.

However, I have another question because something doesn't seem right to me.

First, on my beloved 8 Plus, I have two languages in the VO rotor, US English,
Default, and US English.

I have my beloved Samantha set as the US English Default voice and Alex set as
the TTS for US English. This configuration allows me to quickly switch between
Samantha and Alex on my phone via the VO rotor.

So, when I read your original question to the group and a subsequent reply
suggesting that you add US English to the VO rotor on the watch, I assumed that
one would be able to switch between the two TTS engines , on the watch, just as
I do on the phone.

However, after adding the US English voice to the VO rotor on the watch, while
I can switch between the two languages on the watch, as expected, unlike on my
phone, doing so does not switch between the two TTS engines.

Does anyone know why this does not work?

Again, I am asking because switching between these two languages and their
respective TTS engines on my phone works so well.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

Hi Tim,

I finally got it to work. I had to power the watch off and back on, and then
the option to turn on the SIRI voice worked.

I feel your pain re sleep. When my watch self-destructed, it was four AM, and
of course I couldn’t go back to sleep because I was trying to figure out what
was going on. Have you tried Melatonin? I Take the 10MG tablets, and they
help a lot, (barring self-destructing watches). Just FYI, for me the gummies
are less helpful. I think it’s because they get into my system too fast, and
so don’t help me go back to sleep when I wake up at 3 AM. Just a suggestion.
:)
Cheers,
Donna

number of things that have changed since I first set up the watch two years

of the language I have selected. That makes absolutely no sense, since the
selected language is English US, so I’m assuming that it’s because the voice
hasn’t yet downloaded. Dumb error message, though. It really should say
something about needing to download the voice.

Thanks for the help.
