I've never experienced any issue with fonts, but I don't use any fancy fonts either. When using the Mail app on my Mac, I use Helvetica which is the standard font. When using Outlook on my PC, I use Ariel, also a standard font. I use the native mail app on my iPhone, and whatever is The default font is what is used.
