Re: SOS can't hear voiceover on my new macbook air

2021-06-15 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Tim,

Thank you for your patient response

I did get to recovery and tried to erase the hard drive and then reinstall from
scratch. I think I may have messed things up since I got a message the start
up disk couldn’t be verified. So I was stuck. I tried again to play around
with volumes and finally reinstalled the OS but now I’m stuck on setting up
home folder as the setup assistant insists my name is not acceptable and
prompts me to choose another but to no avail. So I think I shall have to call
apple support.

Thanks again, Tim

Lossless Apple Music

2021-06-15 Thread Ronald van Rhijn
Hi,

Is anyone using the lossless feature of Apple Music on Mac and/or iPhone
already?
I am curious if we can read which music is in lossless format with Voice Over.
And if so, where exactly is this info found. Perhaps its due to me still
running Catalina, but I never hear any info about lossless quality when
browsing the Apple Music library. Same goes for Dolby Atmos/Spatial Audio.

thanks,
Ronald

Re: Lossless Apple Music

2021-06-15 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

On the Mac, while the music is playing, look in the LCD panel. If the title is
Dolby Atmos, it will say so. Similarly, in the Now Playing screen on your
iPhone, it will be announced by VO somewhere on that screen. With respect to
Lossless, make sure that you’ve set your music app to play lossless audio in
Music Settings on iPhone, and Music Preferences, in the Playback tab on Mac.

Re: Lossless Apple Music

2021-06-15 Thread Patrick Ford
Hi, I have noticed that there are a number of playlists designed by Apple that
are marked with the words spatial audio. These lists cover a wide variety of
genres. I have also noticed that when you select lossless files in your
preferences all the music which has not been downloaded will play in this
format.
The bummer for me is that, unless I am misunderstanding, you cannot appreciate
the spatial audio unless you are wearing a headset and I think certain TV's. I
have a surround sound system but sadly it will not play the spatial audio.

Re: Lossless Apple Music

2021-06-15 Thread Ronald van Rhijn
Hi Tim,

Thanks for that. Isn't it noticeable when searching for music on Apple Music? I
mean not my own library, but looking for new music to add to my library. I
think I read somewhere you should be able to find it when searching. Not sure
though.
I cannot set the lossless format, cause it isn’t supported in Catalina.
Therefor I probably cannot see it in the lcd either.

thanks,
Ronald

Re: Lossless Apple Music

2021-06-15 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Yes, there certainly are limitations on what will play the Dolby Atmos and/or
Spacial Audio.

I have the AirPod Pro which will do spacial audio in supported movies and TV
shows when playing from iPhone. My surround sound system does support Dolby
Atmos, but I only have the Apple TV HD at the moment, not the 4K version, so
Dolby Atmos is not passed to the system. I’ll look at updating my Apple TV in
the Fall and then we’ll see how things sound :).

Hi Patrick,

Ok you came across some playlists marked with the word spatial audio, that’s
good to know. The word Spatial, was that in the name of the playlist or an
additional tag?

Re: Lossless Apple Music

2021-06-15 Thread Brad Snyder
you won't see a Lossless option unless you are running macOS Big Sur 11.4 on
your Mac, or iOS/iPadOS 14.6 on your iPhone or iPad.

Ronald,

In the Music app, in Apple Music, select the Browse tab. If your device

Re: Lossless Apple Music

2021-06-15 Thread Patrick Ford
It's in the anme of the playlist, i.e, classical music in spatial audio - jazz
in spatial audio - I don't know how long they will keep these playlists but
they had quite a few such as classic rock in spatial audio and so look around
and I'm sure you will come across these playlists - I had received an email
originally with a bunch of the playlists listed so apple could promote the new
sound -

Re: SOS can't hear voiceover on my new macbook air

2021-06-15 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Yes, I think so. I too thought about this when I got stuck having migrated my
data from the previous macbook air on which I used Alex whereas voiceover
always defaults to uK Daniel as per location. However it was taking so long, I
thought it couldn’t have been the case. But maybe…. Anyway, it’s too late now
as everything went pear-shaped. I was on the phone with 4 different Apple
support people and they couldn’t get the macbook to erase the volume in order
to reinstall macos Big Sur. In the end all was lost and volumes disappeared.
So I’m sending it back to Apple to be replaced. Once the replacement’s
arrived, I will set it up as new and won’t migrate any data. I will try and do
it manually. I’m exhausted. :)

Thanks, Donna, I’m sorry to say I’ve had to return the macbook air to be
replaced. Trying to erase the macintosh hd, and as you said, the OS couldn’t
be reinstalled. What a horrible journey. Sleepless night and I’m in turmoil.

Thanks again - glad not to be the only one. :)

Re: Lossless Apple Music

2021-06-15 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

As far as I can tell, if you’re listening to the Apple Music version of a
title, it will be lossless if you’ve set your device to play lossless. There
are other considerations as well. See this article:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212183

Also, for an interesting read on the whole lossless, spacial audio realm, check
out the article below:

Hi, I have noticed that there are a number of playlists designed by Apple
that are marked with the words spatial audio. These lists cover a wide
variety of genres. I have also noticed that when you select lossless files
in your preferences all the music which has not been downloaded will play
 in this format.
The bummer for me is that, unless I am misunderstanding, you cannot
appreciate the spatial audio unless you are wearing a headset and I think
certain TV's. I have a surround sound system but sadly it will not play
 the spatial audio.

Re: SOS can't hear voiceover on my new macbook air

2021-06-15 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Andrew,
I am sorry you have had to go through this experience. I have a couple of
suggestions when you get your replacement machine. By default, the function
keys control Media features. Function Key 11 and Function key 12 control
volume. So that’s a quick way to decrease or increase volume. I actually prefer
this method over using the VO keys, as I find I get louder volume using the
function keys. I recently learned about a Bluetooth/USB keyboard. It’s the
Logitech K860. It has command, control and option keys on both sides. I have
been using the Crossover move, and that’s gotten annoying in a hurry. The Caps
Lock Key can also be used for the VO keys. What separates this keyboard is that
to the right of the F12 key is a toggle key. This toggles the function keys
between Media and standard function keys. In my opinion, that’s a game changer,
as I can have the best of both worlds by using one key as the Function Key
toggle Hopefully, you will have a smoother transition when you get your
replacement unit. Best of luck.
Best Regards,

Les

Time machine on M1 Mac?

Hi all,

I’ve finally gotten to the point where I’m ready to back up my M1 Mac. But I
have discovered that time machine no longer appears in my Extras menu. I found
it in the Apps folder, but I only seem to have the option to Restore, not to
backup. What’s the deal? How are we supposed to back up the new Macs?
TIA,

Sure. First, they moved Time Machine. It’s no longer in the Extras Menu. The
tricky part is that you can access it in the Applications folder, but when I
did that, the only option I had was to restore. However, when I accessed it
from System Prefs, I was able to set up Time Machine, Configure the disk, and
Back up my Mac. So just be sure to access it from System Prefs, and you should
be good to go.

Hi,

There is no difference when using time machine to back up an M1 Mac versus any
other Mac. You need to go to System Preferences, Time Machine, then set it up
there.

Re: Time machine on M1 Mac?

2021-06-15 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Donna,

Actually, it’s just not in the Extras menu by default. You can add it to the
Extras menu either by checking the box in the Time Machine pane in System
Prefs, or in the Dock & Menus pane of System Prefs. BTW, the Time Machine app
in the Applications folder has always behaved in the manner you explained.
When going into Time Machine via the app, that is the alternate way of getting
there. That is, alternate to the Time Machine menu and selecting “Enter Time
Machine”.

HTH.

 Hi all,

I’ve finally gotten to the point where I’m ready to back up my M1 Mac.
But I have discovered that time machine no longer appears in my Extras

Restore, not to backup. What’s the deal? How are we supposed to back up
 the new Macs?
 TIA,
 Donna

Re: Time machine on M1 Mac?

2021-06-15 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Tim,

Interesting. I don’t remember ever having to set it up to show in the Extras
menu. But prior to this Mac, I’ve always migrated my data using Time Machine,
so it may be that I set it up on my first Mac and that option was just moved
forward in the migration process.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Time machine on M1 Mac?

2021-06-15 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Donna,

It probably was the default to be in the Extras Menu in the past. It is just
not the default anymore in Big Sur.

Later…
