Emoji's on the Mac?

2021-02-09 Thread 'Stur It Up Productions' via MacVisionaries
Ok, so I am doing the control, command spacebar to bring up the emojis’, but
when I select a category it selects the 1st one, instead of letting me pick 1
from the table, what is the secret to this?

I actually noticed that as well, and was wondering if I was doing something
wrong, sense I couldn’t seem to figure out how to simply select one.

I don’t get exactly what you are doing? I just have to interact with the
category name and I see all the emojis there.

Mail often hangs in Bigsur 11.2

2021-02-09 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am using Apple Mail on Bigsur 11.2. Quite often Mail keeps saying “busy” when
I try to read a message.
I have 3 Email accounts and have set up All Inboxes so that I see all messages
in a single table. When I have located a message of interest I press VO+J to
read the message text. This usually works OK but quite often Apple Mail
distlays the message header and then keeps saying “busy” and refuses to display
the message text. It instead displays the message header and then keeps saying
“busy”. Force quitting Mail and restarting Mail does not usually fix the
problem and I have to go to my iPhone to read the message text. I think this
may be happening if a new message arrives at the same time as I am trying to
read the chosen message.
This hardly ever happened on Catalinabut it started happening on Bigsur 11.1.
Do others have this problem? If so is there a work around perhaps by changing
my Mail preferences?
Many thanks for any tips.
Best … Paul Hopewell

Re: Mail often hangs in Bigsur 11.2

2021-02-09 Thread Brad Snyder
This is not a new issue, and is not unique to Big Sur. I currently experience
this on Catalina, and other versions of macOS and iOS going back a while.
I believe this is a server-side issue, and not anything you can do about it.

Re: Mail often hangs in Bigsur 11.2

2021-02-09 Thread Eric Oyen
I have only encountered this on occasion. I don’t use the VO+J command. I
simply go to the message of interest and read it directly. And yes, I am
running latest version of Catalina (system updated today in fact). Mail does
sometimes hang whenever the server gets too busy. Also, if trying to load
images or URL’s from online sources, mail can get a bit dicey. I turned off
loading of images and outside URL’s to minimize this problem.

Btw, here is my system specs just for interest:

iPhone SE 2020 out of the box

2021-02-09 Thread Patrick Ford
Hi everyone,
I’ve never used an iPhone and was hoping out of the box I could use Serri to
turn on voice over and begin set up. But when I press the home key, I do not
get any reply.
How do I turn on voice over right out of the box to begin set up?
Thanks.

Terminal copy file command help needed

2021-02-09 Thread 'Robert Cole' via MacVisionaries
Dear List,
I need help with this terminal copy file command.
I need it to overwrite the existing file in the destination.

cp ~ % /Users/robert/Documents/Time\ Of\ Day.applescript
~/Library/Scripts/VoiceOver/

Every time Mac OS updates, it replaces this file that I customized.

Thank you,
Robert

Re: Terminal copy file command help needed

2021-02-09 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Well, I would be surprised if the version in your home directory is being
replaced, but I have no proof one way or the other. Th
First, the location of the script does not matter much if you are executing it
with VoiceOver commanders, when you open the commander preferences you should
be able to open a dialog to pick the location of the script to run.
Second, if you want, you can save the script as a "application" and then store
it in ~/Applications.
Third, I wasn't sure exactly what you were requesting. Do you want a rsync
type protocol to automatically push the script to your Library scripts
directory on login?

I'll be glad to help with any specifics.
Jonathan

Re: Terminal copy file command help needed

2021-02-09 Thread 'Robert Cole' via MacVisionaries
Hi,
I was looking for a way to copy the file from documents to
HD\Library\scripts\VoiceOver\
But maybe terminal is not the way to go, I like your suggestion of using a
apple script and save it as a app.
I modified the time of day script to speak the time followed by month day &
year, but after every OS software update, it reverts back to speaking the month
day followed by the time.
To fix it, I have to opened the documents folder and copied the modified
script then goto the script folder and pasted it to overwrite the file that was
there.
I hope I didn’t confuse you.
I just wanted a quick easy automated way to do this after updating the OS.

There isn't one, but the application you're using (e.g., text editor or

The proper syntax is cp source-file destination-file-or-directory

See the manual page or any good UNIX tutorial. There are numerous

they do happen on Intel-based systems.

Since I haven't yet made the upgrade, I can't comment based on experience.

Re: A VoiceOver Command?

2021-02-09 Thread Brad Snyder
Rather than posting a question to the list, you can use VO + K, to turn on
Keyboard Help, which will tell you what a keyboard command does.

Additionally, if you go to the Menu bar in any application, and go through the
pull down menus, you will find many keyboard commands for various actions
listed along with the menu item for the action.
For example, when using TextEdit, if you go to the Menu bar, and open the
Format menu, you will find keyboard commands for Text Alignment listed in the
Text submenu. The same is true when using Mail, however in the Format menu,
you will find Text Alignment in the Alignment submenu.

All it takes is a little investigating and using your problem solving skills,
and you will learn to find the answers to most of your questions on your own.

RE: A VoiceOver Command?

2021-02-09 Thread Fazil
Thanks much, actually, I tried to find the answer in Keyboard help but the
problem is that my Apple Magic does not reliably identify/recognize the
key-combination. It is very quick to announce the individual keys.

Having said all this, may I know what does command-shift-+ do?

Thanks!

Hi!
I don’t have this issue.
But have you tried the re-build function in the mail app.
I am not sure where in the menus it is but there should be a re-build feature
there.
This removes caches and such I think.

Re: A VoiceOver Command?

2021-02-09 Thread Brad Snyder
I don’t believe that the keyboard command CMD + Shift + Plus-sign does anything.

Your earlier email asked what the command VO + \ does.
When using Keyboard help, you are told VO + \, opens/closes a disclosure
triangle.

A disclosure triangle is used to show/hide additional information for a
dialogue box element, such as the Location item in a Save As dialogue.

OK, I found it.
When in both the TextEdit and Mail apps, and probably Pages as well, the
keyboard command CMD + PlusSign, will increase the Font size.
The keyboard command CMD + MinusSign, will do the opposite, and decrease Font
size.
Adding the Shift key to either command, doesn’t change what the command does.

I should have known this to begin with.

OK, I found it.

When in both the TextEdit and Mail apps, and probably Pages as well, the
keyboard command CMD + PlusSign, will increase the Font size.

The keyboard command CMD + MinusSign, will do the opposite, and decrease Font

Adding the Shift key to either command, doesn’t change what the command does.

Frustrating combo boxes

2021-02-09 Thread Kerryann Ifill
Hi all,

Whenever I try to schedule a zoom meeting on the zoom website, the date combo
and the time combo are sources of ongoing frustration!
Each time I try to edit either, it never registers.

Not sure how to change the outcome. Interacting doesn’t work. Directly entering
the appropriate entries neither.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Kerry

Re: A VoiceOver Command?

2021-02-09 Thread Brad Snyder
No. On Macs running macOS 10.12 Sierra, and newer versions of the OS, VO + the
Plus sign, will increase the system volume, and VO + minus will decrease
volume.

Isn’t it VO plus and Vo-Minus to increase and decrease font size?

Thanks!

Thanks much, actually, I tried to find the answer in Keyboard help but the
problem is that my Apple Magic does not reliably identify/recognize the
key-combination. It is very quick to announce the individual keys.
Having said all this, may I know what does command-shift-+ do?
Thanks!

Hi, Group!
What does this command do, please?
VO-shift-backslash.
Thanks!
