I have only encountered this on occasion. I don’t use the VO+J command. I simply go to the message of interest and read it directly. And yes, I am running latest version of Catalina (system updated today in fact). Mail does sometimes hang whenever the server gets too busy. Also, if trying to load images or URL’s from online sources, mail can get a bit dicey. I turned off loading of images and outside URL’s to minimize this problem.
