I am not getting such a link on the ffn pages I seek. The only link
identifies them as the source for security, making this a terrific option
if it can be accessed.

Setting the accessibility cookie is rather easy. You just have to make sure
that your allow cookies setting is turned on in your browser of choice.

Firstly, if you can’t get past the captcha, there are links that show up that
will take you to a page where you fill in your email. Then, a link will be sent
to your email containing a login link. On that page, a control called “set
disability cookie” will be present. Best bookmark that page so if the same
thing crops up again in the future, you can go right to that page and hit the
set cookie thing again. Then just go to the page you were on before, reload it
and boom, back in business.

Re: Default location of TextEdit to save files?

2021-02-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Fazil,
The file menu changes depending on a system setting.
Please go into:
System Settings General.

About 2/3 down the window is a category called:
when opening documents
The first item in this category is:
Ask to keep changes when closing documents
If this button is not checked, then your Mac will save your document every few
minutes and you will have items under the file menu like:
Duplicate, Rename Move to… and Revert.

In this mode every ten minutes, your document is saved, and if you really mess
up you can go to the revert menu and put it back to what it had been.
The duplicate is just a modification of Save As. Though I can never remember
then if I am editing the new file name or the old one, note that since the Mac
is automatically saving, when you do a duplicate both copies of the file will
have your latest changes. So, if you want to change a file and keep the
original you should do the duplicate command before making any changes.

Now back to that checkbox in system settings…
If you check this box, then command-shift-S will do a traditional save as
instead of a duplicate.
You will probably have to logout or at least quit open applications if you make
this change.
To add a little to the confusion, some applications like Most of Microsoft
Office, do not use the Apple automatic save functionality, so in these
applications, there is no revert ability and even when that checkbox is
unchecked you will find a save as in the file menu.

Hopefully I explained this clearly,
Jonathan Cohn

Re: Reading Email Messages in Mac?

2021-02-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Fazil,
Assuming no changes in the standard views of Mac, the VO-J command should jump
you from the list of e-mail messages to the currently selected message or
thread. If you are in threaded mode, the message where the VO cursor should be
is the first unread message of the thread.
Attachments, are a bit interesting. There are several ways to get to them. I
think the easiest is to go to the file menu and then select "Save Attachments".
What I generally do though, is move to the end of the message if the attachment
is not "inline" (in the middle of the document and visible to the sighted),
then you will find icons in the message for each attachment. Pressing VO-space
while on one of these icons will bring up a short menu of choices including:
open, ope with and save.
Also, there is usually a button near the end of the headings that is just
labeled with a number. This is the number of attachments, and if you click on
that number you will get a list of attachments for the current message.

Jonathan

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

One simple way is to use the free tool provided by robobraille.
www.robobraille.org
You can send the file as an attachment to
epub2...@robobraille.org
request txt or rtf in the subject line, and the file comes back in well
sometimes less than a minute.

Hope that helps,
Karen

Appending selected text to the clipboard

2021-02-03 Thread William Windels
Hello
For my work , I use a win10 computer with jaws for windows and there is a
built-in script to appen d selected text to the clipboard.
So, you can put all different paces of text into the clipboard and paste it
together on another place.

On macOS, I found ‘Alfred for that task but The clipboard-extension is only
available in the power pack extension and this isn’t free.

Is there a free (built-in) tool on the Mac to do so or another external
programs that works fine with VoiceOver?

Kind regards,
William Windels

As I understand it, PRC is a Kindle file.
Did you download the Kindle for Mac app?
The best way to read a Kindle book is to download the app from Amazon directly
and then open and register the app with your account.
https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Digital-Services-LLC-Download/dp/B00UB769KC
Once you register and log in, you can select the sync items button and download
the books you have purchased.

Can't update new contact in Messages

2021-02-03 Thread Jason Judy
Hello everybody,

A button appeared in a conversation offering to update the person's new contact
info in Messages on my iPhone. It seems nothing happened when I repeatedly
pressed the update button.

I checked Contacts in the Settings and couldn't tell if I'm missing something
that may be preventing my iPhone from updating the new contact info. Any
suggestions?

Thaks!

Jace

this freaking touchbar is the worse gimmick I have come across

2021-02-03 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi everyone,

After a few months of my macbook 16 inch in heavy rotation, I have to be frank
with the touch bar. It's an utterly useless, cluttery, annoying piece of tech
which has no place where it sits. Everything else is world class, as expected
from Apple. I just don't know why they tried squeezing this useless
touchscreen, with my 2 cents on why below:

1-It's not reactive at all. Sometimes, it does not react or speak anything nno
matter what I do. To solve this, sometimes I just keep moving my finger across
left to right until hopefully something occurs. By that time, it really doesn't
matter whether a touchbar is there or not.
2-It always gets in the way when I type. Keeps announcing f12 as my finger
barely even brushes (or does my finger brush that area?). Just like cabs, the
touch screen is never there when needed, always there when not.
3-The haptic part, obviously, is pretty much a foregone design flaw for blind
users like myself.

The reason I did not upgrade from an older macbook was because of the keyboards
they had for a while, and the touchbar. Once my macbook was pretty much beyond
retirement, my only choice was to have the greatest of the portable. I feel a
bit cheated here, particularly knowing that the intel chip inside might
actually not have the capacity to wake the touchbar up in a reactive way.

That's it, now I'm happy to get back to work.

Yuma

Re: this freaking touchbar is the worse gimmick I have come across

2021-02-03 Thread Brandon Olivares
Honestly I enjoy the TouchBar. I don’t use it a lot but I do find it helpful
occasionally.

Just a tip, if it stops responding, restarting VoiceOver can sometimes help, or
switching out of and back into the application you’re in.

Also, I thought I heard Touch Bar is being discontinued, so you may not have to
deal with it for long.

Re: file type

2021-02-03 Thread Brad Snyder
I don’t know. I am not a big user of Kindle. I have it on my iPhone, and
don’t use it that much.
I saw Rebecca’s email with the link from Amazon, and wondered if the app was
available from the Mac AppStore. I looked, and saw it was indeed available
from the AppStore. The app is free, so I downloaded it, and will give it a
whirl.
