Re: Recovering data from iPads

2020-12-30 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello.

Thanks so much for your feedback, everyone and Eileen,
I am sorry that you lost your husband.

After speaking with my friend’s brother-in-law and going through some records,I
now have the Apple user ID and password. Unfortunately, neither my friend’s
brother-in-law, John, nor I could find the unlock code for either iPad. I like
the idea of going to the Apple store, along with a copy of my friend’s death
certificate and see if I get any further. That can wait, however, since the
lockdown has most likely closed the Apple Store here in Vienna.

Again, my sincerest thanks to all of you, and may all of us have a happier new
year!

If you have any questions or concerns about

Is it possible to watch iTunes movies on a Samsung smart TV if you don’t have an Apple TV?

2020-12-30 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

My parents are older, so if I can, I’d like to avoid bringing an Apple TV into
this loop. They have a Samsung smart TV, and an Apple ID, as they both have
iphones. I would like to be able to gift them movies through iTunes and have
them watch them on their Samsung smart TV. Is this possible? Or would they need
to get an Apple TV in order to watch iTunes movies?

Thanks for any and all advice on this.
Cheers,
Donna

Big Sur, Time Machine and VoiceOver Problems

2020-12-30 Thread Steve Matzura

First off, what's up with Time Machines disappearing from the Extras menu?

Second, what's up with the fact that when TM is opened manually from the
Applications folder, VoiceOver loses focus and you have to bring the TM
window back yourself by finding it in the Window Chooser menu
(double-VO+F2)?

The Time Machine window, once you get to it, is vastly different from
the way it's been for several versions of MacOS before Big Sur. Gone is
the ability to select a disk, or to open a list of backups to possibly
restore something, and the Restore button is dimmed.

Anyone else finding what I'm finding?

Many of them are from Nuance. The "Fred" voice sounds somewhat similar

My last try, in March, involved a siri voice  on an Iphone, which

What I hoped for from the list  was frequency related information

I would  not be using a strict 64 bit edition of Macos regardless for

Pressing this brings up a dialog with a table of voices. Each

Re: Big Sur, Time Machine and VoiceOver Problems

2020-12-30 Thread Steve Matzura
To your first point, every article I've read, whether it's from Apple or
a user, says managing one's backups via Finder is a bad idea because TM
can get confused if something else gains control of its index structure.

To your second point about the interface being the same, indeed it is.
But try opening Time Machine from the Applications folder instead. If
you don't get what I got, then I obviously have a wrong setting
somewhere. VoiceOver does some wacky stuff if you do this, such as, but
not limited to, not allowing you into the menus, and needing to access
the Time Machine dialog via the Window Chooser first. Maybe that's
Apple's way of saying "ah ah, don't go there." LOL.

Just a note on voices.
I was taking a programming class for work a couple of weeks ago and I

One of the functions we used was

Tom insisted on calling this "to the following" which was really confusing.
I have no idea why the strange pronunciation.
I switched back to Alex and things are less confusing.
Just FYI,

Hi Karen. Some voices on the Mac are used for novelty purposes.
Bells basically talks, or in this case, sings like a grandfather
clock. There are other novelty voices that I'm not going to get
indepth about because it'll take all night to do so. But I can tell
you one voice I'm glad they finally let us use on the Mac. We can
now use Siri voices. They added those voices in Catalina and they
can be used in Big Sur as well.

I am confused when I try to open a docs file in pages. I seem to have a

Contacts not transferring from Mac to iPhone

Hi all,
I created a contact on my Mac yesterday. Problem is it will not transfer to my
iPhone. Both the Mac and iPhone are on the same network and logged in to
iCloud. I am sure in the past I have done this with no problems.
Thanks for any advice.

Re: Big Sur, Time Machine and VoiceOver Problems

2020-12-30 Thread John Panarese
I don’t know how it worked for you in the past, but opening TM from the
applications menu does the same thing as it always has for me. It opens the
interface, but you need the Window Chooser menu to get to the TM controls. The
only oddity I am currently seeing is VO doesn’t seem to interact properly with
the time line. I need to do some more investigating of this.

As for opening Time Machine from the Finder, this can only be a problem if
you are heavily manipulating files and folders haphazardly. As long as you are
careful and you know exactly what it is you are trying to access, there are no
issues. I’ve access my backups through the Finder interface for years and have
never had any problems. It’s certainly a valid approach and is stated in the
ACSP training materials as a way to access Time Machine effectively.

Hi Karen. Some voices on the Mac are used for novelty purposes. Bells

it'll take all night to do so. But I can tell you one voice I'm glad they
finally let us use on the Mac. We can now use Siri voices. They added
those voices in Catalina and they can be used in Big Sur as well.

The Applications folder is a bit weird in newer OS's since those applications
(except Safari) that come with the OS are on a read only area that is designed
to be locked away from being modified, while App Store apps and hand installed
apps also can reside there.
The OS seamlessly merges these to I thought one could see the readonly and work
area disks in /System/Volumes, butI can't understand the structure there.

 (double-VO+F2)?

The Time Machine window, once you get to it, is vastly different from the

ability to select a disk, or to open a list of backups to possibly restore
something, and the Restore button is dimmed.

Would iPad Air WiFi ring to An Incoming Call If On The Same Network As The Phone?

2020-12-30 Thread Fazil
Hi, Group.

My question is about iPad Air WiFi. Would the iPad Air ring too when my
phone would ring if both are on the same network under the same Apple ID?
This iPad is not the cellular-supported.

Thanks!

Re: Would iPad Air WiFi ring to An Incoming Call If On The Same Network As The Phone?

2020-12-30 Thread Brad Snyder
Yes. As long as both devices are on the same wifi network, and signed into the
same AppleID account, your iPad should be able to receive calls made to your
iPhone.

On the iPhone, go to, Settings > Cellular, or Settings > Phone, and select
Calls on Other Devices. Then select your iPad from the "Allow Calls On" device
list.

You may also need to do something in FaceTime settings on your iPad to allow
the iPad to receive calls. I don’t have my iPad nearby, so I am not able to
verify this.

Just one more follow up question,

would iPad ring along with the phone despite the fact that it is wifi only?

Thanks!

Is anyone else having problems with photo descriptions linking themselves to the wrong photos in IOS14.3?

2020-12-30 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem? Up to fairly recently,
when I've put descriptions on my photos, they've all been fine and have stayed
with the right photos. However, since updating to IOS14.3 my photo descriptions
seem to have gone mad and have started attaching themselves to completely
random photos. So when I've thought I was showing someone one picture it's
actually been something totally different. With sighted help I've tried
re-labelling them all, but it's not worked, as the descriptions have just gone
and relocated themselves again.

So just wondered if anyone else has been having this/similar issues? If so,
does anyone know of a way of fixing it?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Eleanor
