Re: Control and Option backspace no longer working on my MBP for navigation and deletion

2020-11-17 Thread Stan ZA

Hi 1&All,
Thanks Donna, if I understand you correctly, I find my input is “British
english", but changing to “American english” still makes no difference, to the
keyboard.
I am thus an old dog learning new tricks, using “quickNav” when navigating,, I
have found by turning “QN” off I can then interact with the items in the list
[eg. mailboxes or messages], and then turning “QN” back on I can move around
the window. It seams to speed up navigation this way.
Thanks again, and yes I will revisit your solution again.

Cheers.

changing the keyboard input back—to US in my case—fixed my issue. To check
this, press VO-M twice to bring up the extras menu. For me, keyboard input is
the second to last item on the right. VO should announce the current input

P.S. Some of this may be different in Catalina. I’m still running Mohave.

Hi,

It sounds like your issues may be slightly different from mine. It should make
no difference whether your keyboard is set to British or American English. I’m
not sure what else to suggest, though, hopefully someone else can help.
Good luck!

Do you have any way to describe specifically why there are differences in
Apple’s implementation of the headphone jacks versus Windows and others? I am
guessing it’s in the electrical connection to the T-R-S contacts on the jacks
and plugs, correct?
In other words, why are they different?

Re: Time for a new Mac

2020-11-17 Thread Brad Snyder
Janina,

That is disappointing to hear that devices connected to your USB hub do not
automatically reconnect on reboot.
I have the exact same Mac mini as you, and I am using a Belkin USB hub
purchased from the Apple store, and I do not experience this issue with the
Belkin hub.
This makes me feel the issue is with the USB hub you were using, and not the
Mac mini.

Hi, Steve:

Janina here ...

I purchased a fully loaded Mac Mini earlier this calendar year and I'm
generally quite pleased with it. I added a BT keyboard to my order, and
it's the keyboard I use most often though I have also added the Mini to
my USB based KVM. The KVM also works well with a simple swap of the
Windows and Alt keys from a PC. I would note the swapping didn't work
properly until I got sighted assistance, but has been rock solid since.
Whatever!

The only downside I've experienced is not enough USB ports. Yes, I have
Apple's extra ports dongle thingie, but it doesn't recognize plugged in
USB devices on reboot. Pulling the USB connector and plugging it into a
different USB port fixes things--but one shouldn't have to do such
things just because one rebooted.

If my needs were postponable, I would tend to want to wait for the new
Apple CPU which should provide significantly improved performance. I now
have two Macs, my Mini and a 2013 vcintage Airbook. I expect to replace
the Airbook sometime after the new laptops with the new CPU come to
market. Until then, I can still run Big Sur on mine--but it's likely the
end for me there, too.

Best,

Janina

Don't bother replacing the speakers. The same thing will happen. Unless they
have a model specificallyh designed for Apple Mac or IOS devices, I would
simply return them for a refund and look for a different option.

Apple Mail on IOS: how to set up All Junk mail box

2020-11-17 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running IOS 14.2 on my iPhoneSE 2020. I have 3 Email accounts. Some time
ago on an older IOS release I set up All Inbox, All Draft, All Archive and All
Bin mail boxes which are all very useful. Alas I cannot remember how I did that
and google offers no help. I now want to set up an All Junk mail box.
Does anyone know how to do this?
Many thanks … Paul Hopewell

At the very top of your screen in the mail app, there is a edit button. Double
tap that, once you do that, the all junk, in box, all drafts, will show.
Select the one’s you would like to see, and then double tap on done.

Re: Safari on a Mac

2020-11-17 Thread Brad Snyder
Without knowing what website you are visiting, or anything else about your
situation; I have found that sometimes, it is helpful to route the mouse
pointer to the VoiceOver cursor using VO + CMD + F5, then perform the VoiceOver
mouse click using VO + Shift + Spacebar, to select/activate a link.

I don’t know if this will help, but you might want to give it a try.

Re: messages in IOS 14.1

2020-11-17 Thread Brad Snyder
This is a new feature in iOS 14. When you “Pin” a conversation, it will remain
on top of all the other conversations, even if it is not the most recent.
To Pin or Unpin a conversation, do the following:
1. Place VoiceOver focus on the conversation that you want to either Pin or
Unpin.
2. Set the VoiceOver rotor on Actions.
3. Swipe up or down until you hear VO say “Pin” or “Unpin”, and then perform a
1-finger double tap to execute the action.
4. This action is a toggle, so if a conversation is not pinned, the action
will pin the conversation to the top of the conversation list. If the
conversation is already pinned, the action will unpin it.

HTH.

mac OS big sur: touchbar latency

2020-11-17 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi everyone,

I'm having sticky thoughts about this touch bar, which is new to me as I
recently upgraded to the 16 inch macbook pro.

It's quite slow to be honest, between when I'm trying to do something on it,
and when voice over starts to react. if it were mechanical keys, I would just
press the required key and don't have to think more.

is there something perhaps that could shorten this delay? Is there some wake up
component to the touch bar? I hear from sighted assistance that it seems to be
always on, so I would expect some more snappiness with this?

Thanks for any help

Re: mac OS big sur: why does it have to behave like I'm using an iPad

2020-11-17 Thread Yuma Decaux
Least path to resistance is really what I am objectively looking for, and in
this case there's spurious actions required to get there. on the long run, as
large numbers tend to explode over multiple iterations, this becomes a waste of
my productivity. The tabbing was great for the messages app, and I have also
noticed now how convoluted it is to get to what I want.

I really would take time to do feature requests and reports like before, but I
am held up with uni and personal projects, so I really invite everyone in this
list to go ahead and report, the apple team really does take reports seriously
when they are well edited and give context, such as audio recordings etc.

Have a great rest of week,

Yuma

mac OS big sur: repeating ping sound

2020-11-17 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi All,

I've recorded myself on the system to demonstrate this repeating ping sound
that occurs without any input from me, and its starting to drive me absolutely
bonkers. it's very disrupting and annoying, and I would really like to know
what is going on, and how to turn this down. Attached below is a dropbox link
to the recording:

Thanks,

I did try those things. I thought it ws just that the site might be kind of
inaccessible but then it happened in an email. guess that wouldn't be Safari
would it? what I did that time was to arrow down to the link I wanted but when
I was pressing vo-command-l vo would say the link but the action wouldn't
happen. I'll mess around with it some more.
