Re: Bluetooth braille using Catalina the 10 point.15.3. Please read below?

2020-02-26 Thread Jonathan Cohn
OK, I’ll try tonight with my Catalina machine, but I expect to have no
problems. Once you click pair in the VoiceOver dialog did you get a chime on
your BrailleNoteTouchPlus?
If so at this point hit any braille routing key on the braille display.
Then answer the next two question in the affirmative and you should be paired.

My guess is that the last two digits are a hexadecimal number between 0 and
255, where “ff” would be 255. and 00 would be 0.

Re: Laser Printer Suggestions

2020-02-26 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
This is an update on my adventure with my new Brother HL-L2395DW
printer/scanner. Bottom line is that everything is going well.

My friend was by and installed the toner cartridge yesterday. Then she
left and I suddenly realized I'd neglected to have her discover the
default password.

So, it took a little on line digging, but I found a password. Once I had
that everything went smoothly.

* The printer plays sound when powering up, and a different sound
* when powering down. Nice, because it's one of those "hold it in
* for a second or two" buttons that don't tactually give you their
*   state.

* The physical keys and the touch screen are likely useless. I
* haven't found any value in them.

* But, that's not an issue because everything can be controlled
* from a browser, or a Brother app on your phone.

*   I've configured mine over wireline IPv6 and IPv4. I've accessed
* over wifi--than you Linksys OpenWRT router. Who needs the built
*   in Brother wifi anyway!

I have yet to try scanning, but I'm quite pleased so far.

It seems to be better than it was about 3 years ago when it was the big rave
and everybody was using it, but I couldn’t get it to do much of anything other
than read the titles of peoples’ pins. Now I’ve found it to be doable, but it
takes a little playing around with it.
  You need to find the pin you want, and if it’s text-based, click the button
labeled “read it” and it will take you to the text portion of the board, as
well as allow you to open the web page in safari that the article stemmed from
in the first place.

Disabling the MacBook TouchPad -- Terminal Command?

2020-02-26 Thread Dave Carlson
Given what magic I’ve seen about terminal commands, does anyone know of a
UNIX-based command that would disable the touchpad, so I don’t continually
activate things when I drag the heels of my hands across that large surface?
I know about connecting a USB or BT mouse to do this, but looking for a simpler
solution.

Re: 'Lockdown' open source firewall app leaps from iOS to Mac, blocks app and website trackers for free, 9 to 5 Mac

2020-02-26 Thread Lorie McCloud
Mark, do you know if this can be used in conjunction with Adblock Plus or
should users just have one or ther other?

Janina,
   Super. I just ordered one for myself.

Nice, because it's one of those "hold it in
* for a second or two" buttons that don't tactually give you their
*   state.

* The physical keys and the touch screen are likely useless. I
* haven't found any value in them.

* But, that's not an issue because everything can be controlled
* from a browser, or a Brother app on your phone.

*   I've configured mine over wireline IPv6 and IPv4. I've accessed
* over wifi--than you Linksys OpenWRT router. Who needs the built
*   in Brother wifi anyway!

I have yet to try scanning, but I'm quite pleased so far.

Hi, no problem.

I don't expect any problems with wifi setup, but I haven't done that
task yet. I haven't powered up yet. I don't expect I'll get far enough
to do it if the toner isn't seated inside because that will generate an
error in the printer, and it won't go further.

So, let me say more about this later tomorrow.

I can tell you what I expect, and that is straight forward, no nonesense
configuration. That has always been my experience with Brother machines.

Feel better!

Hope off list is ok. My head hurts and I don't need to share that with
the group. :)

For months I've been fighting with the Windows VM. I have a large monitor
so am using large print. But some apps are making life difficult with
so-called updates that trash accessibility so its time to move full time to
my Mac. One major reason why its taking so long, aside from potholes that
develop one step in front of me is Duxbury. License is for Windows. $700
would get me a Mac license. If I do that I can save $99 by not renewing
Office 365.

As to the printer, my inkjet needs ink. I rather put the $70 towards a
laser printer so for me the 2395 would cost me half, $70! I'm not an Amazon
Prime member,

Did you have to use Brother software for wi-fi setup on the Mac?

My needs are simple. Easy wi-fi setup. Easy scan (I use FineReader).
Never tried multi page scanning but I probably will someday. I too want
minimum buttons.

I haven't used sirprint or airdrop. But that too someday.

On the toner I guess I can hold off on a spare toner as I do not print
that much any more.

Thanks so much for all the information you shared. I will probably place
an order tomorrow.

Yes, I looked at the 2710 and the 2750. I don't recall why I rejected

Amopng other things, I don't want too many compartments, too many
sliders, and too many buttons. I don't print all that much, and should I
ever need a multi-page duplex printout collated and saddle-stapled, I
think I'll just take the job to my local Fed Ex or UPS store and pay for
the privelege of letting them get it done right. They can see the
output, I can't.

Hi,

I just purchased a Brother HL-L2395DW for my home office. I'm expecting
it to work well for Apple/Mac, Windows, Android, and Linux--but I've
just gotten it out of the box.

It was $99 at Amazon. It supports print, copy, and scan. There's no
builtin fax, which is OK by me. Fax over an analog phone line isn't even
possible in my office any longer as I haven't had analog phone lines for
a decade.

I'll update in a day or so whether I had any issues getting printing and
scanning running from my Macbook Air, which is on Catalina.

Best,
