RE: forgot password on mac

2019-10-19 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Why did you have to take your machine in to an apple store to get the OS
reinstalled?

That should be something you can do yourself.

As for your password,
If the OS was completely installed by the store rather than updated by them
then they will have to tell you what your password is.

Or if you have your mac set to have or allow your apple id to reset the
password for the machine then you could do it through your apple id,

Or if you are comfortable with the Mac OS then you could

Start your machine up on to a USB Flash drive
Or into the recovery console using from power off, Command plus R

Then under the utilities menu open the terminal
Type in "resetpassword"

Then in this password reset window you will have any user accounts setup on the
machine available and be able to reset the password for it.

Note that when you restart the machine you will be prompted to either update or
create a new key chain for the user account.

Re: A Question to VoiceOver Uber Riders

2019-10-19 Thread Pete De Vasto
OK, Mark, I’m at a loss for words, because the Schedule in Advance button does
appear in fact on my iPhone 7. And Uber support did get back to me about the
ETA info, but all they could do was to have me check to be sure I had the
latest update, then the usual troubleshooting steps like powering phone on/off,
logging out/in, uninstall/reinstall the app. So I really don’t know what else
to say, except that it very well might be that there is something quirky about
how the app runs in the Los Angeles area, strange and weird as that sounds.

Re: Capslock and VMWare Fusion

2019-10-19 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Hello Kelly,

The problem of the caps key as Jaws key in VMWare Fusion has always been a bit
of a problem and you will need to jump through a number of hoops to make it
work. The way I had accomplished it some years ago, as long as I can remember
is as follows.
1. You need to disable caps lock function on the mac side in system preferences
then keyboard, then press the modifier key options button. In the dialog that
will appear, you can specify what actions various modifier keys can perform on
the mac. These are popup buttons. Caps lock key must be set to no action
because Mac OS doesn’t release caps lock actions to windows installations under
VMWare Fusion as far as I understand.

2. You need to download a utility for mac called Karabiner Elements from the
link below:
https://pqrs.org/osx/karabiner/
This utility once installed will allow you to remap the function caps lock key
to act as an insert key. As you know, mac doesn’t have insert key so you need
to remap it so that caps lock key is recognized as insert key.
Once you install Karabiner Elements, depending on your version of OS, you may
have to grant it permissions in system preferences security & privacy, under
privacy tab.
Also, Karabiner Elements, once installed, will create an icon for itself in
menu extra. That’s how you will always find the app and activate it. Its
window easily disappears once you command + tab away from it so I thought I’d
warn you.
In Karabiner Elements you need to again reassign the function of caps lock key
to insert key. This is relatively straight forward but you will need to do
some exploring. There are basically two popup buttons in a table left column
says something like from key, and right column says something like, to key.
You need to choose from caps lock and in the right column to insert key.
This will be all for Mac OS side.

4. Now once you’ve started Windows in VMWare Fusion, you will need to search
via google for a small utility called sharpkeys.exe by Randyrats, if I
remember. Download it and install it. Once you launch the sharkkeys.exe
application, you will need to again reassign caps lock to insert key and insert
key to caps key. This should do it. I can’t be more helpful on all the steps
of how you’d do this in sharpkeys as I’m not able to look at it while typing
this message but you probably have enough experience to work it out after
you’ve explored sharkeys windows. Basically sharkeys will change reassignment
of caps lock key and insert key in Windows registry. You will need to restart
your Windows for the reassignment to take effect. I don’t know exactly why you
need to reassign caps to insert and then again insertt to caps but when I did
only the former, it didn’t work. It only worked for me when I did the insert
to caps reassignment as well. Of course you need to tell Jaws to use capslock
key as Jaws key.

Hope this will help, and please anyone chip in if I have made a mistake in the
above or omitted anything.

Andrew

Creating and Using Email Newsletters

2019-10-19 Thread Brianna Snyder
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has any advice about creating and how to run a
mailing list.
I'm an author, so I'd have to work with at least some images.
I've tried using Mailchimp, but got confused after creating the list.
So, if any of you do have an email list, what site do you use, and how do you
run your list?

Thanks for the help. Since I'd be working with this on the Mac, I figured it
was safe to ask here. :)

Hello Brianna,
I rarely post on the Mac list, staying on this list to see either interesting

My name is Daniel. I am a web host, and have been since 2010. I do offer the
ability to host mailing lists, using something called MailMan. MailMan is very
usable on the Mac and is popular in running mailing lists.
If you'd like to talk off list regarding your own mailing list, feel free to

RE: A Question to VoiceOver Uber Riders

2019-10-19 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Pete,

Yes, I'm with you, on this one.

Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes the bear gets you, as the saying goes,
(smile).

My friend, the Uber driver tells me that neither she nor anyone with whom she
works has ever received a pickup in advance assignment. I just don't think the
feature is available in this area, at least, not yet.

CCC backups give an error during an auto backup.

Hi all,

I am using CCC (carbon copy cloner) and have a scedualed backup which takes

compleated with errors. Any one using this program have any ideas on how to
get around this.

On another note, I noticed on my Mac mini 2018 will not boot into recovery. I
need to do this to enable external drive boot. When I use cmd+R to get into
recovery, the system just boots back into the main system. An I doing

Re: Some strange behavior after upgrading to catalina

2019-10-19 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello Eric,
For the terminal, note that Catalina by default uses the zsh instead of bash
for its shell. That being said, I used to have zsh do file name completions
when I used it in 1999. You should b able to start a bash session and have it
work as before.
In terms of Safari, I expect that since VO Cursor is dragging the keyboard
input with it when cursor tracking is enabled, you are just getting some
verbosity about exactly where the cursor is which could be useful if you start
using shift and arrow keys to select items on the Safari page. Are there any
changes in this output if you turn off cursor tracking, or lower verbosity
settings?
Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: An accessible map for my city on Iphone?

2019-10-19 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I expect what you are talking about is not the accessibility built into the
Apple MAPS? You would like to use arrow keys or swipes to move block by block?
I seem to remember running into something like this, but I don't remember off
hand. In any case, if you could explain your expectations a bit more than I
would certainly be willing to see if any of the Navigation apps I use regularly
qualify.

Best wishes,

Creating and Using Email Newsletters

2019-10-19 Thread Holly Jensen
Hi,

Another option is Arigato Pro. It is a wordpress plugin that will allow you to
create and send newsletters directly from your own website. You will also need
to download an SMTP plugin. There is a more feature-rich version of the plugin
which includes a pop-up creator that is also accessible. If you want to play
with it, they have a sandbox site that you can use to check it out.

I will have to look into the cursor tracking issue. I don’t ever remember
turning it on, but it could be on by default. I will try to change a few things

Re: Creating and Using Email Newsletters

2019-10-19 Thread Brianna Snyder
